Education, Transformed. There is a magic moment when students make a connection between what they are learning in school and something they deeply care about personally. That’s the moment when learning becomes relevant and meaningful. Yet for too many students, those moments are few and far between. School feels disconnected from their goals, identity, and interests. But what if we could transform learning so that every student had engaging and meaningful learning experiences every day? That was the goal behind bringing the ISTE and ASCD communities together. Members of the ISTE+ASCD community share an interest in transforming learning. They are a community of educators who will never be satisfied with “mediocre.” They are advocates who see barriers to student success as a puzzle to solve, not a boundary to accept. They are the people who every day show what it looks like to do amazing things so that others know it’s possible. Our goal is to support you in your important work. And we’re so serious about it that we have renamed our organization to clarify this focus. ISTE+ASCD is now the International Society for Transforming Education. Our team has curated a variety of learning opportunities in this catalog. Whether you’re strengthening instruction, navigating AI, building teacher capacity, or connecting with peers, you’ll find professional learning that is both scalable and sustainable. Together, we’ll help you turn your vision into transformational learning for every student. We look forward to being on this journey together! Sincerely, Richard Culatta

Professional Learning Tailored to Your Needs For many schools, professional development follows a familiar pattern: a full-day workshop, a guest speaker, and a binder of materials that rarely gets used. ISTE+ASCD’s Custom Learning Services (CLS) was built as a direct response to that problem. CLS offers professional learning designed around a community’s specific challenges rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

What Custom Learning Services delivers: Expert-facilitated professional learning that builds genuine educator confidence Flexible inperson, online, or blended delivery Systemwide coherence connecting

your vision to classroom instruction Ongoing coaching and support that sustains growth over time

Not every educator needs the same solution and ISTE+ASCD’s Custom Learning Services are built with that in mind. Through a suite of capacity-building models, schools and districts can select the professional learning pathway that best fits their goals, then receive the hands-on coaching and expert guidance needed to get there. The result is a team that builds the frameworks and systems to sustain long-term growth.

From Challenge to Champions: How Southfield Public Schools Transformed Through Differentiated Instruction A district at a crossroads

When Michigan’s economy declined and student mobility surged, Southfield Public Schools turned to ISTE+ASCD. Over four years, the district rebuilt its culture around one core belief: Every student deserves instruction tailored to them. As

classrooms

The path to job-embedded professional development

shifted to student-

centered learning, behavior

problems dropped. Students worked at the right level

of challenge, increasing

engagement and reducing

Rather than bringing in outside experts, ISTE+ASCD helped Southfield identify and develop 30 of its own teachers as leaders who could bring differentiated instruction to their colleagues.

ISTE+ASCD believes that teachers learn best from other teachers and that watching great instruction is more valuable than a workshop. Southfield’s teacher-leaders opened their classrooms for observation and debriefing.

State test scores rose, Advanced Placement enrollment increased, and the academic ceiling was raised for all students.

To sustain change, ISTE+ASCD helped Southfield hire fulltime professional development facilitators who worked alongside teachers in every school until differentiated instruction became the standard.

PREVENTING CHEATING THROUGH ACADEMIC INTEGRITY BY

Quick Reference Guide Monica Burns

TONY FRONTIER

6

IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS

5

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

34

STRATEGIES

WHAT IS ACADEMIC INTEGRITY?

WHAT IS CHEATING?

Academic integrity is a commitment to ensure one’s work accurately represents what one understands and is able to do. Students can demonstrate integrity by (1) transparently documenting the process, resources, or sources used to engage in one’s work and (2) explaining or expanding on their evidence of learning (Frontier, 2025a). Teachers can help learners demonstrate integrity by aligning expectations for learning with opportunities to learn, designing quality assessments, establishing clear boundaries for using resources, and fostering a culture of learning where productive struggle, honesty, and advocating for one’s needs as a learner are highly valued.

Cheating is the use of a tool or resource to misrepresent one’s knowledge or skill to get undeserved credit. Clear policies related to cheating—including defining what cheating is, articulating categories of behaviors that constitute cheating, and establishing guidelines for accusations, due process, and consequences— ensure rules can be consistently and fairly enforced.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN ADDRESSING CHEATING AND SUPPORTING INTEGRITY Policies and strategies to deter cheating are essential to help establish boundaries for what students should not do. However, solely focusing on threats, detection, and consequences overlooks important factors related to why students cheat in the first place (Lee & Pope, 2024) and fail to support student beliefs and class-

room goal structures associated with integrity (Krou et al., 2021). Strategies that maximize students’ efforts to act with integrity help students understand what they should do. Teachers should work in partnership with students to maximize learning and proactively minimize the conditions where cheating is likely to occur.

CHEATING

$14.95 | Member: $11.95 9781416632580

Key Question

Did the student actually do the work?

Does the work accurately represent the student’s skill and understanding?

Student’s Action

The student engages in some form of cheating, plagiarism, academic deception, or enables others to cheat.

The student honestly represents current skill and understanding, is transparent about sources/resources used, and is able to explain content, concepts, or skills in their completed work.

Student’s Rationale

“It’s important that I get a good grade on this. The risks of failing or doing poorly are greater than the risks of revealing I don’t understand or might get caught.”

“It’s important that I understand and can do this. This is going to take some time and productive struggle. It’s OK not to know, but it’s not OK to misrepresent what I know.”

Teacher’s Role

• Detect or catch the student cheating • Confront and accuse the student or attempt to elicit a confession • Contact their parent or guardian and/or inform administration

• Balance challenge and support by aligning success criteria, instruction, feedback, and quality assessments with opportunities to learn. • Create a culture where it is OK to not know, to engage in productive struggle, to ask questions, and to seek help.

Next Steps

• Administrative investigation • Gather additional evidence • Further attempts to elicit a confession

• Teacher continuously monitors and aligns student progress with opportunities to learn. • Student builds capacity to act with integrity by asking questions, transparently documenting sources, and explaining their evidence of learning.

If accusation was warranted: • Teacher upholds policy, maintains fairness, and deters others. • Student is held accountable and may internalize consequences as a productive life lesson.

If accusation wasn’t warranted: • The student feels victimized. • The teacher may appear incompetent or unfair. • Trust between teacher and students is undermined.

1

• The teacher and students establish trust. • The teacher has an accurate understanding of what students know and understand. • Students know their teacher is there to help them engage in productive struggle and to learn. • Students internalize important content-related skills and understandings. • Students build agency and capacity to act with integrity.

The Way to Inclusion: How Leaders Create Schools Where Every Student Belongs

MARILEE SPRENGER

From SEL to Executive Function Skills Teaching executive function (EF) skills in conjunction with social-emotional learning (SEL) is crucial for fostering cognitive, emotional, and social competencies. Together, these programs enhance students’ abilities to succeed academically, manage stress, and build meaningful relationships (Durlak et al., 2011). SEL provides the “why” (emotional intelligence, empathy, and social responsibility), and EF provides the “how” (the mental processes to manage and apply these emotions and social understandings effectively). While SEL teaches empathy and emotional regulation, executive functions enable students to practice empathy by recalling appropriate responses, planning how to express kindness, and adapting to others’ needs (Sprenger, 2025).

ASCD PRODUCT #: QRG125037

• Self-awareness helps students identify their strengths and challenges, which connects to EF skills like planning and organization. • Self-management gives students tools to control impulses and emotions, key for time management and impulse control. • Social awareness helps students understand and empathize with others, supporting collaboration and adaptability in group settings. • Relationship skills enable students to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and work well with others, which is essential for teamwork and leadership. • Responsible decision making teaches students to evaluate consequences and make thoughtful choices, aligning with EF skills like problem solving and goal setting.

Benefits Beyond the Classroom Teaching EF and SEL together helps students manage stress, reduce behavioral issues, and enhance social problem solving. Self-regulation, a key component of both, predicts better health, financial stability, and lower criminal activity. SEL programs that emphasize EF offer lasting benefits, including improved mental health, stronger relationships, and reduced substance abuse (Taylor et al., 2017).Without sufficient opportunities to build self-regulation, emotional intelligence, and executive function, children face greater challenges in school, relationships, and long-term life success. Addressing these skills early can lead to better academic, social, and emotional outcomes (Durlak et al., 2022).
