The city of Las Vegas takes pride in ensuring that there are recreational activities and programs for all people no matter age or ability. In 2024, a new program began that allows local athletes in wheelchairs to compete on the gridiron as part of the Las Vegas Raiders Wheelchair Football Team.
The city has long been a leader in adaptive recreation programming, providing everything from bowling and golf to wheelchair rugby, and now football. The Raiders play in the USA Wheelchair Football League, which currently has 13 teams with a goal of having 32 by 2026.
Wheelchair football is played much like the football that you may watch on Sunday mornings. A fastpaced sport, wheelchair football is seven on seven and it is one-hand touch. The city’s team is a partnership with the Las Vegas Raiders, and true to the Raider tradition, this team is hard hitting.
“Everyone on the team is an athlete and they have all different skill levels,” Coach Bob “Crunch” Murray said. “This is full-contact, slobber-knocker football.”
To get a taste of this sport and the team, check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0chr3IDvrw For more information call 702.229.PLAY.
