Creating Profound Impact Together

A Message from the Head of Prep and Pre-Prep, Mrs Michelle Best

We want all our pupils to have the capacity to lead and to make a positive difference, whether that be by driving positive change in society, or simply by being a good person who makes a difference to those around them.

4

Through a vibrant curriculum and a nurturing environment, we aim to equip pupils with the skills and confidence they need to progress to the Senior School, and in life beyond. Our values of ambition, courage, curiosity and community shape every aspect of life at our school. They are brought to life through our Habs Habits, which encourage boys to be resilient when things are difficult, curious when exploring new ideas, reflective about their learning and confident working with others. These habits help our pupils develop not only as learners, but as young people who are ready to make a positive contribution to the world around them.

We have a dedicated team of teaching staff who are committed to providing an engaging and inspiring learning experience. We focus on fostering creativity, critical thinking and collaboration, ensuring that each child feels valued and supported. We share the 100-acre campus with the Senior Boys’ School and Habs Girls so we are able to offer wide and diverse co-curricular opportunities to further enhance personal growth, encouraging boys to explore their passions and develop leadership skills that will serve them well in the future. At Habs, we understand that education is about more than just knowledge – it is about character. Our pastoral care programme instils values of kindness, resilience and respect, preparing our pupils to be compassionate leaders in their communities.

Our strong emphasis on social responsibility encourages pupils to engage with global issues and to strive for positive change. Whilst the boys are taught in a single-sex environment, we are fortunate to be situated on a co-educational campus, which allows for frequent collaboration with the Habs Girls Junior School. From planetarium trips to lunchtime music concerts, we create opportunities for friendship and learning in a supportive and safe environment. I look forward to welcoming you to our school. Creating Profound Impact Together

We do not simply teach students about making a difference. We give them opportunities to make a difference now. 6

Purpose Our purpose is to empower young people to make a profound impact in the world. We believe that young people learn best when they have opportunities to apply their knowledge, values and Habits beyond the classroom. That is why service, leadership and community engagement are woven into the fabric of school life. Through our award-winning Partnerships Programme, students work alongside local schools and community organisations, supporting younger pupils, leading activities and helping to create opportunities for others. In doing so, they develop many of the Habits that define a Habs education: Leadership, Care, Collaboration, Initiative and Social Responsibility.

Each week, more than 500 Habs students contribute to partnership activities that support almost 2,000 pupils across our local community. These experiences challenge students to step outside their comfort zones, take responsibility and recognise the positive impact they can have on the lives of others. Importantly, this is not one-way support. Our partnerships are built on mutual learning and mutual benefit. Our students gain new perspectives, deepen their understanding of the world around them and learn that leadership is most powerful when it is grounded in service. The impact is measurable. Through sustained collaboration with partner schools, attendance among disadvantaged pupils has increased by 10.1%, equivalent to an additional day in school every two weeks.

But perhaps the most important impact is on our own students, who learn that education carries both opportunity and responsibility. This commitment to creating positive change was recognised nationally when Habs was named Independent School of the Year 2025. The award celebrated not simply academic excellence, but a school that combines ambition with action, excellence with empathy and leadership with service. For us, however, the greatest measure of success is not an award. It is seeing students use their talents, energy and Habits to make a meaningful difference to the people and communities around them.

Creating Profound Impact Together

At Habs, creating profound impact is not an aspiration for the future. It is something our students experience, practise and contribute to every day.

Because creating profound impact is not something our students wait to do when they leave school. It starts here.

A Community of Purpose

Creating Profound Impact Together

For more than 300 years, the Haberdashers' community has believed in the transformative power of education. Habs Boys is part of the Haberdashers' Elstree Education Group, a family of four schools comprising Habs Boys, Habs Girls, Lochinver House School and St Martin's School. While each school has its own distinctive character, all are united by a shared purpose, common values and a commitment to helping students fulfil their potential and make a positive difference in the world. The Haberdashers' Elstree Education Group is one of four school groups supported by the Haberdashers' Company, one of the UK's oldest livery companies and a longstanding champion of education. For generations, the Company has invested in schools, widened educational opportunity and supported young people from a wide range of backgrounds to thrive and succeed.

8

Today, the wider Haberdashers' family educates more than 12,000 students across independent and state schools throughout the UK. Together, these schools form a diverse educational community connected by a belief that knowledge, character and opportunity can transform lives. This shared sense of purpose continues to shape everything we do. While the world around us has changed dramatically, our belief remains the same: that education should help young people develop the knowledge, character and confidence to contribute positively to society.

T H E H A B E R DA S H E R S' A DVA N TAG E Being part of the Haberdashers' family gives our students access to opportunities that extend far beyond a single school. Through the Haberdashers' Advantage Programme, students collaborate with peers from across the Haberdashers' network, broaden their horizons and develop the confidence and skills needed for life beyond school. Whether through leadership programmes, career conferences, entrepreneurial challenges or opportunities to engage with leading professionals, students are encouraged to explore their interests, strengthen their Habits and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. The programme reflects many of the values at the heart of a Habs education: curiosity, initiative, leadership, collaboration and a commitment to continuous learning.

Strong Governance. Lasting Purpose.

Habs benefits from the support and governance of the Haberdashers' Company, whose members bring expertise from a wide range of professions and industries. Through governance, strategic oversight and investment in education, they help ensure that our schools remain ambitious, innovative and true to their purpose.

For more than 300 years, the Haberdashers' community has believed that education has the power not only to change individual lives, but to improve society as a whole.

Creating Profound Impact Together

Behind every great school is a commitment to stewardship.

This partnership provides both stability and ambition: preserving the values that have shaped generations of students while ensuring that Habs continues to evolve and remain at the forefront of education. For our students, this means belonging to something much bigger than a single school. It means becoming part of a community that spans generations, professions and educational settings, connected by a shared commitment to learning, leadership and service.

Creating Profound Impact Together

Our Purpose

10

Habs pupils are bright, ambitious, globally curious and resilient, with a desire to improve themselves. We also know how important it is for them to develop their personal skills and attributes. This is why we prioritise our outstanding range of co-curricular opportunities as part of our curriculum.

We equip our pupils with resilience, empathy, creativity and leadership – which is why the mark of a Habs education is a person who is kind, confident and inclusive, and who has a strong moral compass.

Creating Profound Impact Together

At Habs, our purpose is simple: to empower young people to make a profound impact in the world.

Watch our Habs Boys Feeding Curiosity film

11

Creating Profound Impact Together

The Habs are how we turn our values into actions and our purpose into reality. We become what we repeatedly do. At Habs, our purpose is to empower young people to make a profound impact in the world. But purpose alone is not enough. Students do not become resilient, creative, compassionate or courageous simply because we tell them these qualities matter. They develop them through practice, reflection and experience over time. That belief sits at the heart of the Habs Habits.

12

The Habits are the mindsets, behaviours and dispositions that students practise every day. Grounded in our values of Ambition, Curiosity, Courage and Community, they help students develop the character, confidence and judgement needed to thrive in a changing world, lead with purpose and make a positive difference to others. Every lesson, every team, every performance, every leadership opportunity and every partnership experience becomes an opportunity to strengthen these Habits. Together, they shape how students think, learn, lead and contribute.

Our Space

Creating Profound Impact Together

Every day, we welcome over 300 boys aged from four to eleven. There are two classes in each year, from Pre-Prep to Year 2, with three classes in each year, from Year 3 to Year 6. Habs is a through school, so when pupils join us in Reception, they will automatically move into Year 3, then into our Senior School after Year 6. Our Prep boys do not sit the external 11+ entrance assessments and our intention is always that our pupils move into Year 7 but we know this will not be the right choice for a very small number of pupils. We closely monitor each boy’s academic progress and emotional wellbeing throughout their time in Prep, and we partner with parents to help us all come to the right decision for the child.

Creating Profound Impact Together

The Habs curriculum

Habs’ 2030 vision is to be at the forefront of education. Being at the forefront of education does not mean simply doing well at delivering the ordinary. It means striving to be extraordinary. Our curriculum is ambitious and valued highly at national and international level. Ambition must be tied to innovation, though, and we are constantly working to develop our curriculum to deliver the skills of tomorrow, not yesterday.

20

Employers predict that 39% of required skills for the world of work will be different by 2030 (WEF, 2025). Our curriculum must not only match our values of ambition, curiosity, courage and community - it must focus on crucial human dispositions such as collaboration, problemsolving, communication and original thinking that our pupils will need for life and for the workplace.

Since the appointment of Clare Jarmy, our Director of Innovation, in April 2024, The Habs Innovation Centre has developed cutting-edge opportunities for our pupils, including new curriculum and assessment pathways and the safe and secure implementation of generative AI tools for teaching and learning.

Our pioneering IPQ programme for Year 5 empowers pupils to explore real-world challenges through project-based learning, fostering creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. From Dragons’ Den pitches to sustainable product design, pupils develop futureready skills in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment. With robust assessment and opportunities for leadership, the IPQ cultivates confident, reflective learners prepared to shape tomorrow. SINGLE SE X

We believe in the benefit of single-sex education. Our boys-only classes allow our pupils to thrive in an environment free of gender expectations. CO - EDUC ATIONAL

That said, our boys also need to be able to work alongside, learn from and build relationships with girls.

In Reception to Year 2, pupils enjoy some shared playtimes and activities like joint musical workshops, Forest School trips, egg hunts and teddy bear picnics. In Year 3 to Year 6, pupils enjoy some shared lunch and playtimes, plus activities like script-writing, maths workshops and the planetarium. We also have a joint choir, Lunchtime Live performances and joint sports festivals. OUR WOODL AND FORES T SCHOOL

Outdoor education is great way for boys to learn different things in different ways, whether increasing engagement, improving academic performance or bringing a greater understanding of the world. Pupils learn practical skills like cooking on a campfire, making dens and crafting with natural materials. They also develop emotional and social ‘soft’ skills such as self-awareness, motivation, empathy, communication, independence and confidence. Reception to Year 2 enjoy half an hour of outdoor education every week. Years 3 to 6 take part in Outdoor Education lessons linked to the curriculum.

RECEP TION

Our learning happens both indoors and outdoors. The structure of each day varies, with a mix of wholeclass sessions, small-group learning directed by an adult, and learning initiated by our pupils. We cover: phonics sessions (daily), specialist subject specific teaching (throughout the week), PE and games lessons (twice a week), music (every week), Forest School Leafy Learners sessions (once a week), French (once a week) and Swimming (three times in the Summer Term). PREP

Our curriculum is broad and balanced. The day is split into ten 30 minutes lessons, covering Maths, Computing, Reading, English, Geography, History, Music, Design and Technology, Science, Theology and Philosophy, Language (Spanish), PE, Games (Rugby, Football, Cricket, Athletics) and Swimming. In Year 3, lessons are mainly taught by class teachers/form tutors and some subject specialists, as they move up through Prep to Year 6, lessons are taught mainly by subject specialists (to reflect the move to Senior School).

Creating Profound Impact Together

The Habs Innovation Space also offers teachers facilities for pupils to be learning in new ways, offering a podcasting suite, green screen, writeable walls and opportunities to use VR.

How we

22

Care

We take pride in ensuring that all our boys feels happy and safe at school so they can thrive in all aspects of school life achieve their full potential. Habs is places where children can feel safe and happy but sometimes even young children can have worries and concerns. We are here to help.

PERSONAL , SOCIAL AND HE ALTH EDUC ATION (PSHE)

Form Tutors take weekly PSHE lessons, using a carefully designed curriculum, adapted from the Jigsaw Scheme. We also collaborate with external speakers and conduct workshops to delve into more complex topics such as Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and gender equality. We help our pupils understand and respect the core British values and the protected characteristics that are essential to our community. BUDDY

All new pupils are paired with a ‘buddy’, who will support and help them in their first few days. We also arrange a series of exciting activities with their buddy throughout the academic year. In Pre-Prep, your child’s buddy will be from Year 2. In Prep, their buddy will be from Year 6.

SCHOOL HOUSES

All pupils belong to one of our four houses: Andrews, Davids, Georges or Patricks. Our House system provides an additional layer of pastoral support with House Leaders supporting pupil’s emotional wellbeing and helps us monitor each child’s individual personal development. They run fortnightly House meetings and organise annual events across the year. PA S TOR AL TE AM

We work closely with parents, our staff familiarise themselves with each pupils needs, on a need-to-know basis. Support can occur at various levels - this might be through your child’s class teacher, a subject teacher, an individual needs teacher or in smaller group sessions. Pupils with known medical conditions are on a special medical register, with the school nurse holding individual medical plans.

We have dedicated staff responsible for pastoral care, who you or your child can talk to, including their class teachers, form teacher, House Leader, Mrs Michelle Best (Head of Prep and Pre-Prep), Mr Paul Swindell (Deputy Head Pastoral) or Mrs Shelly Kahn (Head of Individual Needs). Parents or the child can make an appointment by contacting the counsellor/class teacher/ Deputy Head Pastoral for any worries about schoolwork in Prep and our counselling service.

Creating Profound Impact Together

Throughout the week, the children will have assemblies and form time.

SPIRITUALIT Y

We are fortunate that our pupils come from a diverse range of faith backgrounds. We make special provision for children who need to fast or be absent from school for religious reasons. We also have a multi-faith room which all our children can use. 23

Connecting our Community

Creating Profound Impact Together

One of the great strengths of Habs Boys is the breadth and diversity of our community.

34

Students travel to Habs from across Hertfordshire, North London and beyond, bringing together a rich mix of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences. This diversity strengthens our community and helps students develop the openmindedness, confidence and awareness needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. While our beautiful 100-acre campus provides a unique environment for learning and exploration, we know that accessibility matters. That is why we operate one of the largest school transport networks in the region, helping students travel safely and efficiently to and from school each day.

Around 70% of students use our coach network, which serves communities across Hertfordshire and North London. Routes extend from Harpenden, Redbourn and Welwyn Garden City in the north to Camden, Belsize Park and St John's Wood in the south, with connections to key rail and Underground stations including Radlett, Elstree & Borehamwood, Stanmore and Edgware. Our transport network enables students to make the most of life at Habs, whether attending an early morning music rehearsal, staying after school for sport, participating in a society, or taking part in leadership and partnership activities. It helps ensure that geography is never a barrier to opportunity.

Creating Profound Impact Together

Ready to make a difference

38

At Habs Boys, success is not measured solely by grades, university offers or career pathways.

It is measured by the difference our students make. Through our purpose, our values and our Habits, we develop curious learners, confident leaders and forces for good—students with the character, confidence and ambition to make a positive difference in the world.

Creating Profound Impact Together

PURPOSE . VALUES. HABITS. IMPAC T.

That is the Habs difference. 39
