BRINGING YOU THE WORLD’S MUSIC DOCS, LIVE AND ONLINE Doc´n Roll Film Festival returns - at last! - to the big screens of London for its 8th and most ambitious edition yet, with 34 feature-length documentaries and 9 shorts, and both in-cinema and online offerings. This year’s outstanding crop of films selected by the UK’s Music Documentary Festival run across four main strands: Sisters, Brothers, Global Visions and DIY Stories. There are tales of romantics and rebels, outliers and outlaws, Roma folk artists and Native American heavy metallers, icons from Prince to Talk Talk’s Mark Hollis and The Triffids’ David McComb to Guy Clark, and female trailblazers including St. Vincent, Lydia Lunch, Fanny, Karen Dalton and Goat Girl. Along the way, a wide range of eras, cultures, rhythms and music scenes stretching from diaspora hip-hop and African rumba to electronic, folk, punk and soul will be in the spotlight. Many of this year’s festival selections are noteworthy for their focus on identity, including gender and race, and the search for our roots and sense of place in the world. As globalisation’s impact is increasingly felt on social, economic and cultural levels, music-makers’ passion to explore who we are feels ever more urgent and meaningful. Doc’n Roll 2021 will also offer timely profiles of musicians in settings as diverse as Brazil, Myanmar, Congo, Vietnam, Serbia and the Basque country who are working to highlight injustice, foreground legacies of trauma and mental health issues, and play inspirational roles in movements for change. In light of COVID-19-related restrictions on travel, all in-person Q&A sessions are subject to confirmation. DocnRoll21 DocnRollFestival DocnRollFilms DocnRollFest
