MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER AND CEO My name is Jason Strotheide, D.C., and I am the founder and CEO of ChiroThin™ and it’s parent company, ChiroNutraceutical. I am a 2nd generation Chiropractor, 1993 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic, and am the 6th Chiropractor in my family.

A randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical comparison study was conducted on H. sabdariffa extract vs lisinopril (control) on patients with stage I or II hypertension. Results showed that the Hibiscus extract decreased blood pressure from 146/98 mmHg to 130/86 mmHg (P<0.05). Based on the study data, the authors concluded that the hibiscus extract did have a significant antihypertensive action through at least 2 mechanisms of action: diuretic effects (likely as an aldosterone antagonist) and ACE inhibitory effects. The study authors also noted that the diuretic activity did not alter plasma potassium levels and did not have mineralocorticoid effects.

Hawthorne Berry: The principle active components in hawthorne leaves, berries, and blossoms are flavonoids. One of these flavonoids, proanthocyanidin, has especially important cardiovascular effects.

Two randomized, controlled trials found decreases in blood pressure measures. Ninety-two men and women with mild hypertension achieved a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure after 3 months with C. curvisepala. Individuals suffering from angina may also benefit from hawthorn. In one small study, 100 mg 3 times daily of crataegus extract or placebo was given for 4 weeks. Angina decreased in 91% of patients in the hawthorn group vs only 37% in the placebo group; 45% of the patients in the hawthorn group completely stopped their nitroglycerine, compared with 25% in the placebo group. Hawthorn preparations are modestly effective in reducing blood pressure, preventing and treating atherosclerosis, lowering cholesterol, and preventing the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Hawthorne preparations may improve the blood supply to the heart by dilating the coronary arteries, increase the force of contraction of the heart muscle, and regulate cardiac rhythm. (Continued)

Olive Leaf Extract: Olive fruit’s array of beneficial compounds includes hydroxytyrosol, oleacein, ursolic,and oleanic acids. However, it is oleuropein, found in high concentrations in the leaf of the olive tree, that is largely responsible for the beneficial effect on high blood pressure.

A multitude of causative factors underlies uncontrolled blood pressure. Many cases of hypertension involve increased arterial stiffness. This stiffness, or lack of elasticity, usually begins in the arterioles—tiny peripheral arteries most distant from the heart—and eventually spreads to larger arteries.

Oleuropein has been shown to specifically target arterial resistance and stiffness, improving endothelial function and bringing blood pressure under control. It accomplishes this in part by modulating calcium channel flow—with an excellent tolerability profile.

Coleus Forskholii: One of the most beneficial aspects of Coleus appears to be relating to its use in conditions such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, and angina. Coleus has been shown to reduce blood pressure along with improving the contractility of the heart.

This improvement in function appears to be mainly due to the increase in camp. Coleus is also noted for its effects on reducing platelet aggregation and acting as a direct cerebral vasodilator.

Buchu Leaves: Buchu contains both diosmin and hesperidin, which indicates it may have anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic (blood cholesterol lowering), and vasoprotective actions.

Uva Ursi: Uva Ursi has a history of medicinal use dating back to the 2nd century. It has been widely used as a diuretic, astringent, and antiseptic. Folk medicine around the world has recommended Uva Ursi for nephritis, kidney stones, and chronic cystitis. The herb has also been used as a general tonic for weakened kidneys, liver or pancreas. Native Americans used it as a remedy for headaches, to prevent and cure scurvy and to treat urinary tract infections.

Green Tea Extract: A dietary supplement of green tea has now been shown to help lower multiple factors associated with the metabolic syndrome in overweight adults. The 56 participants in this study were classified as obese, insulin resistant, and hypertensive, meaning they already had multiple difficult metabolic issues similar to millions of Americans. Amazingly they took a relatively small daily amount of green tea extract standardized for 208 mg of the most potent antioxidant catechin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Psyllium comes from the Plantago ovata plant. Sometimes the seeds and husk are used as a bulking agent. Both are mucilaginous, which means that when you put them in water, they absorb a lot of water and form a gel, softening and increasing the size of solid wastes. Psyllium is particularly resistant to fermentation, so it’s not likely to cause gas.

It contains more fiber and it breaks down more slowly, producing large amounts of butyric acid. Butyric acid prevents the development of cancer cells and appears to protect against colon cancer. In one study, a group of colon cancer patients who took 20 grams of psyllium seed a day for three months had a 42 percent increase in their butyric acid levels.

Nature-Ease’s Many Uses The same butyric acid that blocks cancer cells may be responsible for psyllium’s beneficial activity in people with ulcerative colitis. When colitis patients were given 10 grams of psyllium seed twice a day, their remission was the same as when they took drugs containing mesalamine. You may be able to avoid more expensive medications.

Psyllium worked in 85 percent of people with chronic constipation with no pathological cause. It even reduced constipation by 37 percent in some patients who had rectal and intestinal disorders. Check with the doctor before taking anything for constipation to make sure you’re not masking symptoms from a more serious condition. (Continued)

The mucilaginous effect of psyllium soothes your intestines. It significantly reduced bleeding from hemorrhoids in a study of 50 people. But to be effective with hemorrhoids, you need to take it for at least a month. Psyllium’s ability to absorb water also makes it valuable for people with diarrhea. In one study, psyllium decreased the occurrence of incontinent stools by a full 50 percent.

The longer you take this fiber, the better it seems to work. It lowers total cholesterol and the potentially harmful LDL cholesterol. A group of people who took a little over five grams of psyllium twice a day for two months had lowered total cholesterol and LDL levels. Another group of elderly patients had a 20 percent reduction in total cholesterol after taking psyllium for four months. Men and postmenopausal women, but not premenopausal women, had a significant drop in triglyceride levels after taking 15 grams of psyllium.

Avoid Harmful Ingredients Many people with constipation reach for a laxative containing senna. It works, but while it stimulates muscle contractions and relieves constipation it can cause your intestines to lose some elasticity, creating a laxative dependency. A number of laxatives contain phenolphthalein, a chemical linked to an increased risk for cancer.

The FDA has proposed a ban on phenolphthalein, but it’s still in some products. Read labels carefully and avoid phenolphthalein.

Bottom line Psyllium is a naturally occurring bulking agent with no side effects — unless you have an allergy to the plant. It is most effective when taken for several months. Begin using the lowest amount in divided doses. Whether you have constipation, diarrhea, or intestinal inflammation, psyllium may be an effective and inexpensive remedy. Because it contains no artificial sweeteners, sugar, or potentially harmful chemicals, it’s safer than other over-the-counter bulking agents.
