DOCEXDOCE
EXPERIMENTAL COMPETITIONS FOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS
DOSSIER 2021
Who are we? DOCEXDOCE began in 2017 as a unique competition for architecture students and young professionals. Using an exciting and experimental format, DOCEXDOCE encourages participants to propose solutions for a given contemporary problem. We have REVOLUTIONIZED the developmental approach to youth contests. Moving away from competitions that last months and drain participant resources, we favour a model where anyone can participate and create their proposal in a record time! TWELVE HOURS of continuous work is enough to submit innovative ideas. The competition topic is kept secret and only revealed at the very beginning of the twelve-hour countdown ensuring maximum EQUALITY amongst participants.

How do we do it? Our students-oriented approach drives DOCEXDOCE to shorten the processes and give youths a voice when finding solutions to their community's problems. Our method avoids the time consuming and expensive system of a standard contest, which can be defined as follows: Regular competitions
-
1. A lengthy process is needed to prepare proposals and the client less ideas over an extended period of time: many participants decide not to be involved because of the resources needed. 2. Participants need to invest a substantial amount of time and energy to win the main award. All but one loses and participants get no feedback or return from their effort.
DOCEXDOCE offers an innovative service with an aim to overcome the regular inconvenients of an ordinary contest. We focus on a more collaborative method consisting of: DOCEXDOCE system
+
1. Reinforcing a network of local organizations (EMBASSIES), working with different groups and needs to find flexible approaches to engage with their target groups. 2. By organizing a project with DOCEXDOCE´s method a high number of participants and therefore ideas are ensured. More than any other a classic competitions system. 3. Participants train skills that are useful for their future professional lives while also having fun and improving soft skills such as: time management, decision making, problem solving, strategic thinking, teamwork and sense of ownership with a job well-done.

TARGET GROUPS
PARTICIPATION
We focus our strategies on youth's daily routines in order to make our working system more effective. All procedures are developed with respect and empathy. Making them have a small insight of their upcoming bright future.
The contest topic is decided in collaboration with the client. Then we decide the type of team participation: ONLINE mode, to work from anywhere in the world; and an ON-SITE mode in one of our DOCEXDOCE EMBASSIES.
ORGANIZATION
VISIBILITY
DOCEXDOCE is not just a competition but a full event surrounded by additional activities such exhibitions, interviews, award's ceremonies, conferences, etc. All accompanied by a publication of the winning projects review.
Over 4 years we have developed a recognized and motivating way to spread the word of our competitions. Based on talented local people talent and networks, we have made an impact since the beginning.
NETWORKING
JURY
We come from a social media oriented proposal, understanding that our strategy and growth is embedded in our networking capacity. Our focus is on creating a world wide network of participants sharing their learnings.
A multidisciplinary and recognized jury is in charge of evaluating the projects and deciding on the winners according to the competition topic and goals. Naturally, this selection is decided in collaboration with the client too.
On what do they compete? DOCEXDOCE keeps the competition theme hidden until the competition starts. This generates plenty of intrigue among all participants while assuring maximum equality. We invest plenty of energy on selecting and developing intriguing and innovative topics that will fulfil their expectations with a unique experience! Our competition themes are EXTREMELY CONTEMPORARY, nevertheless we also have into account their rich history. We don't ask participants to develop the best house or the best hospital, we want them to surprise us! We invite participants to this open proposal by asking them: What do you consider this place needs? EUROPE 2019 ‘Zurich and the Neverending Story’ Located between the Limmat River and the Zurich Central Station, the Globus Provisorium building was meant to be demolished more than 60 years ago. The use of this public space with private use is still a cause for protests and referendums. An old island absorbed by the city seeks a new use after a long road to the city. A space of unique opportunity which was even more intense when the historical surrounding buildings were burnt in an accidental fire. LATIN AMERICA 2019 ‘After the Guggenheim: new life in South Harbor’ This urban space accumulates years of stagnation within the urban context, and there are several failed proposals which were never built. After the city presented a negate response about the new construction of the Guggenheim, the space allocated to this project has remained idle. For this reason, this site became an opportunity for a new proposal that provides new desires that respond and complement to the quality of the city. INDIA 2020 ‘Activating Duplitectures: Welcome to Paris Tianducheng’ Tianducheng (Hangzhou) is one of the many suburbs in China that resemble to faraway places and include copies of foreign historical landmarks, in this case the Eiffel tower. This 'fake' well-known icon becomes the anchor point of a Paris style neighborhood, which remains half empty. Very critized by foreign eyes, this Eiffel duplitecture must be reconsidered to avoid its dismantling: Chinese government has recently forbidden 'copycat architecture'!

CONCEPTUAL COMPETITIONS COVID-19 forced us to pause the European 4th edition, yet our spirit didn't stop us reinventing. We decided to create a new model of architecture competition decentralized and conceptual, by finding an online alternative that expresses another form of how architecture students compete

How does it look? The most common saying before our first edition: Twelve hours are not enough for an architecture project. The results: OUTSTANDING! We believe the creative instinct that generates amazing ideas are born at the beginning. Graphic skills, teamwork and different software skills are successfully optimized when facing such an express challenge!
WINNING AS A TEAM We normally don't allow people to work by their own. Teamwork skills are mandatory for a bright professional career and we want to support this idea. Even when individual participation was allowed due to the pandemic, the result speaks for itself: most of the winner are teams created by at least 3 students. We are quite proud of it!

Where are we heading? DOCEXDOCE's team has grown during 2020 despite the global situation. We are happily facing a bright future where professionalization is our main challenge! We want to continue supporting students all around the world and changing the way architecture and general competitions are developed. This 2021 is our 5TH ANNIVERSARY! We want to organize a total of 5 competitions: one per already existing continent, one for a new continent and a new competition for professionals. All our work has always been balanced by parallel activities: conferences by our jurors for students, academic research about architecture competitions, exhibitions of the winning project all around the world and creating visual content as evidence of our unique events! Our needs? We are looking for the ECONOMIC SUPPORT of companies who believe in our values of teamwork and innovation. Making students able to participate completely free! We strongly believe we can make a positive impact in the world and transform this in our way of living.

NOT JUST ABOUT WINNING The main challenge in this competition is to finish on time! In this case winning a prize isn’t the main objective, but to allow us to have a strong and supportive community.
