UNDERSTANGING EPD’s. : Love’m or hate’m, EPDs are the best tool available to estimate the potential genetic value of beef cattle. The numbers are generated on the differences between individuals of the same sex, born at the same time and treated exactly the same way. These are called “contemporary groups” and these are the foundation on which EPDs are constructed. Use EPDs to sort animals you are interested in purchasing. Firstly is the EPD above or below the Average for that breed (Every breed has it’s own EPD’s and you can NOT compare across breeds). Secondly, when choosing between two or more animals let the EPDs RANK the animals for the trait in question. Simply selecting on EPD’s you can make 6 times faster genetic progress than selecting on actual performance numbers. But, EPDs do not tell you STRUCTURE so you still have to judge with your eye which animal has the best “Phenotype” ! Buy the best PHENOTYPE with the BEST EPDs for both the TRAITS YOU WILL GET PAID FOR (such as WEANING WEIGHT ) and the TRAITS WHICH MAKE LIFE EASY (such as CALVING EASE !)
