Green Attitude Let your imagination run free when creating a striking and original floral display. Don’t be afraid to play with contrasts in tone as well as materials. Think of the interplay between light and shade, the clarity of clear glass against the muted tones of a matt finish, and the vibrancy of flowers combined with the soft textures and freshness of green. It’s a look that is contemporary but beautifully elegant too. And to the maths! 1, 2, 3 = smart style! I

A Traveller’s Tale

This season the fashionable home combines the sleekly modern with a sense of travel and adventure. The cleanness of white is the perfect backdrop to accentuate the deep fawn tones of leather and other natural materials of those carefully chosen pieces that evoke the spirit of faraway

places. Papyrus, bamboo, orchids and succulent plants give a living feel to the dĂŠcor. Add to this metallic accents, either strongly urban or in the more organic forms of ethnic decoration. A smart idea: give your fireplace life in summer by filling it with large candles or hurricane lights of various heights. For whatever the season, flickering flames create a magical mood. I

A Succulent

FEAST

Introduce the idiosyncratic charm of succulent plants to your spring table.

3

These exotic plants with their fleshy stems are the new stars of floral decoration, bringing something new and different to spring. Their wonderfully graphic shapes give a table an extra layer of shape and texture, the softness of their round forms a cool contrast to the clean, framed lines of the rest of the decor. Together they underline the mood of natural modernity. A smart idea: keep the decoration of your table simple and unfussy – assorted mini-succulent plants are enough to introduce the unexpected twist. I

Beautiful, Rough & Chic Be daring - let the originality of the hand-made give your decoration a quirky touch. Mixing the crafty and the modern is currently a hot, hot trend. In this time of anonymous industrialisation, design is re-discovering the beauty of the hand-made where irregular shapes and slight imperfections create items that are truly unique. These are pieces that deserve to be shown-off, and which give a distinctive edge to the new season look. Decorative texts in flowing manuscript introduce that human element, and the irregular shapes of vases and cups in white stoneware have real heart and soul, lifting the every day into something special. With a dĂŠcor open to accents both romantic and dreamy, the tone is neutral with natural fabrics of linen and cotton creating a mellow and relaxing ambience. Candlesticks, in the shape of branches, are the final distinct touch. A smart idea: on a woven wicker tray, create a miniature garden with a collection of small potted plants. A cool way to bring the outside in. I

The simplicity of the natural Embrace a key season trend by combining the rustic earthiness of country style with the harder mood of urban chic. Juxtapose the hewn texture of wood with the coolness of metallics and the smooth neutral tones of porcelain and other natural materials. A smart idea: ignore convention! Instead of matching dining chairs, choose a mix of retro styles for a splash of vintage chic that guarantees a fabulous original look. I

Cultivate a love of flowers The fresh tones of sky blue and zesty green are the colours that mark the return of warm days and new spring growth.

And a profusion of softly coloured flowers gives a room a sweetly scented prettiness that immediately lifts the mood. Branches of cherry blossom or generous armfuls of delicate blooms in glazed vases will always tug at the heart-strings. And the power of flowers to delight is also reflected in this season’s stoneware that’s embellished with a beautifully delicate embroidery-style pattern. This subtle balance between the solid and the fragile and the fleeting and the timeless bring together the East and the West in a co-ordinated elegance. 100% zen attitude. A smart idea: : the key to doing contrasts is keeping the look simple but strong. Here, the organic shape of the shiny white lacquer table accentuates the rich colour of the rustic style vases. Just a few objects but a perfect balance all the same. I 11

Bohemian Rhapsody A lightness of touch Relaxed yet most definitely contemporary, this look emphasises the clarity of transparent glass and the translucence of diaphanous materials. Spring sets the colour palette that’s pure but in no way cold and austere. Just the right amount of warm white combined with a large mirror cleverly give a sensation of light and the luxury of space; and a pair of Buddhas watching over the room, a heightened sense of serenity and calm. A sense of fragility is used to introduce an understated yet decorative note. Translucent and lace-like porcelain diffuse the candlelight reflections across the sheen of a table that’s made more interesting by the texture of hammered metal. Vases and candles are stretched to elongated shapes that are graceful in their simplicity, while the delicately shaped glass adds a lovely touch of finesse. Magnolia branches and the layered petals of ranunculas add a note of sensuality that fits with this ethereal mood. Pure calm. 12

A smart idea: change the level at which you live. A low table is the centrepiece here, with cushions scattered on the floor to invite lounging around. Definitely time to chill‌ I

Piece de Resistance An abundance of flowers, bursting with an invigorating freshness and touch-me silkiness celebrates this most beautiful of seasons. This spring, fall in love with the delicate harmony of pure white and soft pastels that together bring a feeling of real joy to the home. Admire the gracefulness of tulips, their delicacy of colour and form and their ephemeral look as well as the exquisite tones of hydrangeas, the lushness of ranunculas and the daintiness of orchids. Such a beautiful bouquet is an easy chic way to celebrate the freshness of the season. Especially when using porcelain vases that look as though they’re made from torn paper, so emphasising a sense of lightness.

3

A smart idea: mix and match! Create an eye-catching focal point by assembling a collection of small vases in just one colour, white, but in contrasting shapes and textures on a tray that is also white. Just add flowers for a guaranteed style statement. Your SIA experts can show you beautifully co-ordinated sets that are ready to go. I
