The Dobson Dolphins was one of the only teams in the Valley of the Sun to practice this Summer. Although the Dolphins’ Board of Directors had to establish modifications based on Government guidelines, group size, social distancing, etc., the swim team still had an enjoyable and memorable milestone season.

Hello Everyone,

Dear Residents,

I’d like to use my message in this month’s Ranchers’ RoundUp as a call to roundup some Ranchers to get involved on our committees!

I am pleased to announce a new member to the management team. I have hired Camille Gonzales to fill the role of Operations Manager. She will help run the code enforcement office, front desk as well and assist with all the committee and board meetings. Camille has been in the community management business for several years, most recently as a portfolio manager. She is a graduate from Saint Martin’s University in Washington. We are excited that she is joining the management team and will be a great asset to Dobson Ranch.

The Board has five standing committees: Master Planning; Budget & Finance; Recreation; Lake Habitat; and Water Management. All of these meetings are open for residents to attend and provide comments. Currently committee meetings are being held via Zoom and broadcast in real-time on YouTube. We intend to resume in-person meetings as soon as it becomes safe to do so.

The work of our committee volunteers is immensely valuable to the community. Each committee has a focused mission. Committees review the Association’s finances, weigh in on community enhancement projects, plan and assist with community events, promote water conservation, and help to maintain the health of our lakes. If you have interest in any of these areas, I urge you to check out a meeting. If you’re able, please consider volunteering to join a committee. Master Planning, Budget & Finance, and Lake Habitat currently have the greatest need for more members.

Quick Update: Upon the recommendation of the Master Planning Committee, the Board changed the committee’s meeting time to the first Friday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Many of you will hopefully find the new time much more convenient. Going forward, all of our committees now regularly meet in the evening during the week.

John Knapp has retired after 21 years of serving Dobson Ranch as our Maintenance Supervisor. We will miss him terribly.

We have hired Marc Diaz as our new Maintenance Supervisor.

Marc comes back to us after having a position as the Maintenance Manager at another largescale community. Prior to that, he worked here at Dobson Ranch on the maintenance team. We are happy to have him back as we focus on our continued improvement of maintenance.

On another note, I wanted to update you on our website. If you are looking for the recordings of any meetings, please go to the calendar and click on the meeting entry. Then you can view the recording by clicking on the link. If you have any trouble with logging in, please email me at: lglysson@dobsonranch.com and I will send you your login information.

We are excited to roll out the new Dobson Ranch App. With this tool you will be able to access meetings and meeting recordings from the calendar, get notifications about events and important news, make pool reservations, and as we add features, so much more. If you want to access the app, just go to Google Play Store or the Apple Store on your phone, search Dobson Ranch App and download the app. A notification will be sent to us to verify access. Once you are verified, you are all set. You can disable push notifications if you would like, or get immediate updates as they happen.

The staff continues to be creative with events. We appreciate your patience with our ever-changing event schedule based on government guidelines. All in person events have an asterisk and may have to get moved or cancelled. The team is still dreaming up alternative events... so look for what we have in store next!

I wanted to thank all the residents who have been so supportive during this difficult time facing COVID-19 challenges. So many of you have helped a neighbor, extended grace to each other and staff and shared a positive thought on social media or via email. This has gone on longer than I think any of us expected and I truly appreciate your perseverance and support.

Your Neighborhood Water Awareness

The Old Road

I have traveled the old road, Route 66, across the southwest several times. In places I find the old road has aged and is in decline, but the drive is still a great experience. I have stood on the corner; I have had coffee next door and I saw Pluto Route 66 - The Mother Road while it was still a planet, all while traveling this road.

The one thing one seldom sees along this old road is water, its alignment is the epitome of Arizona, an arid zone, though the name Arizona, is said to come from the O'odham language, and most likely means “small spring”.

A small spring might refer to the water that was once part of a huge underground water basin. As much or as little water Arizona has, it has been disappearing very fast. There may have been more rainfall in the far distant past that became groundwater, but the current numbers tell a completely different

story. Just seven inches of rain now falls on much of Arizona each year, qualifying our home as a desert.

The people at the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) are trying to come to grips with just how arid Arizona is today. Their task is to provide for the water needs of those who have come to live in this arid land. The early settlers found ways to capture much of the run-off from the winter storms and that has enabled Arizona to become home to over seven million people. But that water supply is now augmented by taking more water from the ground than can be replenished. How can that be reversed?

One way ADWR actions have enabled our growth in a sustainable manner is to assure that each new home in the Active Management Areas (AMA), has a one-hundred-year assured supply of water. With each passing year, that assurance is increasingly harder to certify. For Dobson Ranch, that task is borne by the City of Mesa.

The City of Mesa is prepared to demonstrate to ADWR that we are, have been and will continue to be good stewards of our water resources; that it is important to establish good water conservation practices. And, it is not just one thing that conserves our water resources. It is low flow toilets, efficient washers, dryers and all the other electrical appliances we have; generating electricity takes a lot of water. Conservation is also about using low-water-use landscape around the house and around the Ranch. To live here, we all must do our part for this, our small spring. read and sign the recreation waiver, and you will receive alerts on your phone 10 minutes before your reservation starts and when your reservation ends.

The Dobson Ranch HOA App will be available as a free download for Apple and Android phones. For those of you who are not app savvy, we will have a similar version of the app available on our website.

Our ultimate goal is to have the new app empower our communications management team, board members and homeowners to experience Dobson Ranch like never before.

Enforcing Violations of the Governing Documents

As many of us spend more time at home because of the pandemic, the Association’s office has seen an increase in calls and emails complaining about the behavior of neighbors.

Please understand that the Association has no authority to take enforcement action unless there is a violation of the governing documents for your subdivision. Even when the Association has the authority to enforce violations of the governing documents, the Association has the right, but not the duty, to enforce them.

Therefore, for consistency in enforcement going forward, the Association does not intend to act solely on the basis of a phone call or email. If you believe there has been a violation of the governing documents for your subdivision that you would like the Association to review, please fill out the Association’s

written complaint form. Among the items you must complete is identifying the provision in your governing documents that you feel has been violated.

Please understand that, pursuant to Arizona law, complaints are not anonymous. If you complete a complaint form and the Association determines enforcement action is needed, then your identity may be shared with the violator as part of any enforcement action.

The Board and management staff appreciate your concern for your community and ask for your understanding and cooperation with the complaint process. By working together, we can continue to have Dobson Ranch be “The best place to live!”

Dobson Ranch worked with CIT Bank to offer an upgraded online payment system, allowing flexible payment options to schedule your Quarterly Assessment payments.

C-PropertyPay, our new payment portal, makes it simple, quick and easy for you to make your payments via card or electronic check, using the C-PropertyPay website link located on our website at www.dobsonranchhoa.com.

Please be sure to update the mailing address for future assessment payments as follows: The Dobson Association Inc., P.O. Box 98148, Phoenix, AZ 85038-0148.

If you have not set up an account with C-Property Pay or have not made your 3rd quarter assessment payment, you will need to set up your account using the C-PropertyPay payment portal, located on our website.

With C-PropertyPay you can create a payment schedule.

You must first sign up, enter your contact information, and register your property.

Laguna Village Lights Up the Night on July 4th!

Since the traditional Christmas luminaries at Laguna Village were rained out this past December, residents had a July 4th "Light up the Village" event instead.

• Use cycle/soak if needed to prevent run-off and achieve watering to the entire depth of the root system (about 8-10”).

Simple Ways to Save on Summer Energy Bills

With so many families still working from home and staying in, it’s a good time to start practicing energy- and money-saving habits that can last a lifetime. When it comes to saving on utility bills here are simple ideas: • Large appliances are the biggest energy consumers in homes. People spend about 10.4 hours a year staring into an open fridge. Try not to waste energy with an open fridge door.

• Don't fall asleep with the television on. That nightly routine can cost about $55 a year.

• LED light bulbs can save a person up to $135 over a lifetime. SRP offers instant rebates on several types of LED lightbulbs. Shop online at SRP Marketplace: srpmarketplace.com.

Shade Homes

Protecting homes from the sun helps lower energy costs and keeps homes comfortable during the summer months.

The sun hits west-and-east-facing walls hardest leading to more heat gain for rooms located in these areas.

• Shade trees: SRP customers can get two free shade trees to protect their homes from heat gain.

• Shade screens: About 50 percent of the heat that enters a home comes through the windows. Make life simple, install shade screens and save money with SRP's shade screen rebate.

• Porch overhangs and awnings: These provide great protection from the sun's rays when properly sized and positioned over windows.

• Interior shades: Curtains and blinds work to block the sun, but are not as effective because the heat has already entered the home.

Interior shade helps, but work better as a second line of defense.

• Use a smart thermostat and save about $180 a year.

SRP offers up to $75 in rebates on smart thermostats that can be purchased on srpmarketplace.com.

• Don't bake or use an oven on hot summer afternoons. That only makes a home hotter and the air conditioner work harder.

• Screen walls and vertical fins: While they are more difficult to install, they can be effective at blocking sun rays on the east and

west side of a home.

• Turn off the lights and ceiling fans when exiting a room. Keep in mind that ceiling fans cool people, not rooms.

• Routinely change out air filters once a month. A dirty filter forces air conditioners to work harder, causing higher energy bills and more dust in the home.

The Best Swim Team in the East Valley

When I met with Nancy Roggio, editor of the RoundUp, for an interview in early March for her Movers & Shakers article, I shared my goals as the new president of the Dobson Dolphins. One aspiration was to make the swim team the best, most sought-after in the East Valley. Little did I know this would occur without even trying. Due to changes brought about by COVID-19, the Dobson Dolphins was one of the only teams in the Valley of the Sun to practice this summer.

Although the Dolphins’ Board of Directors had to establish modifications based on Government guidelines, group size, social distancing, etc., the swim team still had an enjoyable and memorable 40th anniversary season.

Just as Dobson Ranch finds ways to connect with residents during these times, like scheduling multiple Food Trucks and conducting the Kids Virtual Talent Show, the Dobson Dolphins developed creative ways to ensure a fun season, while keeping traditions alive.

Vantage West Credit Union (Dobson & Baseline) joined Dance 101, Dobson Ranch HOA, and the Mesa Hohokams. The team enjoyed take-out or dining in at our nearby Goody’s Café, Zoyo Yogurt, and La Famiglia. These businesses generously donated a portion of the proceeds back to the team. The Target (Longmore/Southern) supplied cool treats for the Patriot Practice, Swim-a-Thon, and Water Fun Day, Golden Donuts individually wrapped donuts for Picture Day, and Dairy Queen awarded a free ice cream cone to all. The team itself shined and exceeded expectations in the annual Swim-a-Thon fundraiser, where swimmers raise money for the team based on the number of lengths they swim.

This year, the team swam a total of 3,816 lengths and raised over $2,200!

There were no swim meets, but that didn’t stop the team from holding three time trials, where swimmers competed against themselves to set personal bests. The annual awards ceremony, normally held at La Casita, was celebrated on the last day of practice, where trophies and individually wrapped cupcakes, greeted swimmers as they exited Los Altos.

By Jesse Wright Recreation Manager It’s hard to believe that Fall is just around the corner, especially when we are setting record high temperatures. However, the weather should be cooling off somewhat, football will be starting, hopefully with fans in the stands (Go Packers), and Dobson Ranch will be kicking off our exciting Fall events.

First up is our always pup-ular Bark in the Park event on September 12th. Bring your four-legged friends out to Laguna Park for a doggone good time. Enter virtually to win prizes for best dog trick, most patriotic pooch or pet owner look-alike, plus meet vendors that cater exclusively to your canine. We’ll have areas for big and small dogs, so come out and enjoy a romp in the park with your pampered pooch.

It just wouldn’t be Fall without our 16th Annual Golf Tournament. The Golf Tournament event will be held on Saturday, September 19th at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course. Registration has started by mail-in only while La Casita Recreation Center remains closed. Please sign up if you are interested in playing.

The Bad Boys of Tennis:

Going back when I started playing tennis in upstate New York (Binghamton), I was a ticking time bomb on the court and sadly displayed negative and bad behavior.

There are many things in life you just simply cannot control, but you certainly can control yourself and how you display yourself to others on and off the court. Tennis is like a chess game where the right shots and strategies are formed and displayed to each other.

There will certainly come a time where I won’t have the skills or the movement I once had. I will just flashback to what I was once capable of on the court.

In this crazy world of the Coronavirus we are dealing with daily, we all must be careful in our lives. We must try not to live in fear and enjoy life and the beautiful game of tennis… no matter how well, or not so well, we play.

All tennis sessions begin on the first of each month and run until the end of the month.

ADULTS Dobson Ranch offers a full-range of programs and playing opportunities for ages 16+ and various ability levels. We focus on developing the complete player who can perform in any match situation at any level. Our tennis pro combines technical, mental and physical elements of the game to help build confidence and conditioning to ensure a positive, successful and fun experience.

JUNIORS The mission of Dobson Ranch junior tennis is to provide quality instruction in a fun and friendly atmosphere with a multilevel juniors program from the youngest beginners to sanctioned tournament players. Each tennis student’s placement is based on age, experience and a challenge ladder. Classes combine energized drills, fun games, match play, and conditioning. Our goal is for students to reach a higher level of play and learn to love a sport they will play for a lifetime. Bring a friend!

Adult Skills & Drills Geared for advanced beginners/intermediate players, this class focuses on technique and spin production on shots, as well as basic match strategies. Through structured drills, players will improve their playing consistency, build confidence, and learn how to generate more speed and power.

Junior Clinic This class is for junior tennis players ages 7-12 looking for an introduction to tennis. This class will introduce basic technique through fun drills and games. Learn how to serve into the correct service box, how to keep score, how to properly rotate the racquet, and how to sustain a rally. If you don’t already have a racquet, our tennis pro will fit your child for the proper racquet size during the first class.

Aqua Zumba keeps the Zumba Fitness workout party going in the pool. Aqua Zumba is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added to regular Zumba routines. The typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, and mambo, are exaggerated and slower in water, so the water tempo is half the land tempo, creating a low-impact work out for all fitness levels. As can be seen on the news, the pandemic is still dictating what can and cannot be done insofar as group gatherings. We will once again postpone all of our club activities for another month.

As has been the case for the last few months, nothing will be taking place in August.

When the Coronavirus began to dominate our lives, the ‘mature’ segment of our population became the at risk group of this pandemic. That seems to have given us a lot of incentive to be careful about social distancing and wearing masks. Our club has been very blessed in that we’ve had no member telling us that they have contracted the virus.

As Yogi Beara so eloquently put it, “If the people don’t want to come out to the ballpark, nobody’s going to stop them.”

It’s beginning to look like our current ‘normal’ is going to be with us for a longer time than many of us expected. That can be depressing at times. It can be very helpful to talk to the guy above who can bring us peace when we need it. Sometimes those talks can bring us benefits that are ‘out of this world’.

Monsoon Season is Here, But Where’s the Water?

By Rich Bitner, Recreation Committee Pickleball Representative Dobson Ranch pickleball has yet to see any rain on the courts since the monsoon season began, but we have experienced significant humidity and some pretty good winds on occasion.

We had a great turnout filling all four courts for our July 4th celebration! Our “Pandemic” Summer hours on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 7:00 am continue.

Evening social pickleball group play also remains active under the lights on Monday and Thursday nights starting at 7:00 pm.

Sad to say, for the first time in 18 years, Patricia is cancelling our Hawaiian Opening Bunco. What a bummer! Maybe we can have a Hawaiian Christmas instead.

For now, everyone seems to be coping.

We will see about Out to Lunch in September (maybe meet and have a picnic in the park). Another idea is to Zoom our lunch... maybe Donna or Tanya can show us how.

The bathrooms are now open whenever the Los Altos pool staff is present, but the drinking fountain is not yet available under this phase of re-opening. Also, while we have some benches you can rest on, most are in the sun, so please bring your own chair so you can rest in the shade and take a break between games.

A cooling towel or spray bottle also comes in handy this time of year!

We continue to welcome new players, but do advise checking with us before coming out to make sure our schedule has not changed. Family Support Teams Connecting to Families in Crisis at Mesa Public Schools

As the COVID-19 crisis exacerbates issues of support and resource availability across the state, Mesa Public Schools has created an internal network to further support families in need.

The district has developed specialized family support outreach teams to support Mesa families with a variety of issues, from internet access and food security to health and wellness.

Each of Mesa’s 82 schools has identified three to five individuals on their campus to be the first point of contact for families seeking support. This is often the school nurse, social worker, family support specialist, or other members of staff who have developed relationships with many members of the school community. These employees will identify and support family needs such as food shortages, safe and reliable internet access for remote learning, counseling, drug addiction assistance, behavioral health, and eviction assistance.

“We are using teamwork to get families' needs filled,” says Michele Grimaldi, community partnerships coordinator for Mesa Public Schools. “These outreach teams are available to support all of our families and their needs, from all schools, all backgrounds and all cultures.”

Each site’s outreach team will be the first support to help a family in need, using school and district resources as well as valuable support from community partners. Should additional assistance be needed, district representatives will be the second step of support, further connecting families to local support services.

In the Community Meet the Superintendent

Dr. Andi Fourlis is the new superintendent of Mesa Public Schools. Her career began in 1992 as a teacher in the Washington Elementary School District. She spent 19 years as a teacher and administrator in the Scottsdale Unified School District, as well as serving as the Chief Learning Officer at the Arizona Science Center. In 2017 she joined Mesa Public Schools as the assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, and later served as deputy superintendent.

Q. How would you describe your leadership style?

A. I am a collaborative leader who is always looking for ways to improve our work.

Q. What are your priorities and goals for your first year as superintendent?

A. My priority is to fulfill the Mesa Public Schools Promise to know our students by name, serve them by strength and need so they can graduate ready for college, career and community. In order to fulfill this promise, my goals for 2020-21 are to: • Increase communication and build relationships with the community.

• Successfully open the 2020-21 school year.

• Implement the Strategic Plan.

Q. It’s certainly been an unprecedented year in education.

What assurances do you want to give staff, students and families as we approach the start of school?

A. Our opening school plan is titled Safe.Strong.Ready.

Our highest priority is to provide in-person learning when it is safe to do so. We have a strong plan to move from remote learning to modified in-person to in-person. We will make transitions when it is safe to do so, and remote learning will always be an option throughout the year. We will remain ready by providing ongoing training for staff and parents, and developing family support teams at each school.

We have missed you and are looking forward to welcoming our students back to learning.

COVID-19 has disrupted our learning community, forcing us to make complex decisions often with sparse information and conflicting guidance. Our community has been patient and resilient as we've endured starts and stops, and navigated moving targets. As parents, educators, community members and leaders, we know every decision we make includes risks and rewards. We do not have every answer and we may not get everything right the first time, but we are committed to learning and improving together.

Our community relies upon us to restore a continuity of learning while calming fears and reducing trauma caused by school closures and the global pandemic. I assure you, we want nothing more than to get back to our core business of learning because we know this will allow us to increase equitable access for students, and provide social, emotional and academic experiences that bring students and staff together safely.

Our plan took a village to create, and it will take a village to implement. We are all in this together to return to learning SAFE, STRONG and READY. The health and safety of our students, our staff and their families is our top priority. We want students and employees to feel comfortable and safe returning to school campuses. Our plan incorporates recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Arizona and Maricopa County health departments, Arizona Department of Education, and state and local guidelines.

In Mesa Public Schools, we are committed to: • The safety and wellness of our students, employees and community.

• Successfully transitioning to the new year by offering choices to our community.

• Instilling confidence in our families by providing safe learning environments.
