Accomplishments Abound in 2020 Despite Challenging Times

Hello Ranchers,

Dear Residents,

I hope this issue of Ranchers’ RoundUp finds you well. The endless summer of 2020 has finally relented, and the blessing of cooler weather is upon us once again. Many of us are now rediscovering, or perhaps even discovering for the first time, what wonderful outdoor amenities the Ranch has to offer.

Having 60 acres of common areas, 8 lakes and several miles of walking paths in our neighborhood is an awesome benefit during this time when events and activities have become limited.

Although this holiday season is different than other years, we do have so much to be thankful for and to celebrate. I have seen the community come together to support and encourage one another over the last year. I have had residents asking me to let them know if there is a neighbor in need that they can help. We have had a socially distancing line-dance gathering here at La Casita that brightens my day. Around the corner, there is a resident that posts a “joke of the day” on a white board. I have seen more fishing on the lakes than ever, and I never run into 5.34% anyone fishing who seems unhappy. Walking paths are alive with people getting out and chatting with neighbors, walking their dogs or just enjoying the wonderful weather. It is heartwarming to see the community come together at this time.

Also, a cause for celebration is all that the Board has accomplished this year. Despite not being able to meet in person, they have kept the Association running smoothly and have made some important progress to the benefit the community. They have listened to the community and have made positive changes with the common areas. This includes a third party maintaining the trees, perimeter wall maintenance, more funds to maintain the lakes, and approving several projects on the reserve study that will enhance the community in 2021.

The backbone of the Board decisions come from committee input. The community cannot function without the volunteers on these committees. They do the investigation, ask the tough questions, and do countless hours of research on any project they bring to the Board. The Master Planning Committee is responsible for making key recommendations to the Board on the recently installed benches and tables, the Lake 1 lighting project, the coming monument signs, and much more. The Budget and Finance Committee scrutinizes the financials to make sound recommendations to the Board. The Lake Habitat and Water Management Committees have jointly recommended a Lake Management Plan that was approved by the Board. The DRAC has carried on with approving all the wonderful improvements that are taking place at homes all around the Ranch.

The staff and I have also been busy. Despite the pandemic, we have met each of our goals for 2020. A steady and noticeable improvement can be seen with landscape and maintenance. The positive engagement with our socially-distanced events and features in the RoundUp has kept us going, and the finances are in sound order, thanks to the Finance Department.

There is a vacancy on the Board of Directors due to a resignation. Please email me if you are interested in filling this position.

Even though we haven’t been able to meet in person, the Board has maintained regular meetings via Zoom and broadcast on YouTube. Currently, our main focus has been the maintenance and enhancement of our common areas and facilities. Great news on this front... The massive lighting project along Lake 1 is finally moving forward again after a brief delay while waiting for City permits. The Los Altos pool facility renovations have been put out to bid. During the November Board Meeting we approved a contract with our design architect to begin the process of updating the many monument signs and banners that line the perimeter of the Ranch. We also approved the purchase of the final grouping of benches to replace the aged ones at Laguna Park.

Our success with these community enhancement projects is made possible by the many volunteers who donate their time and serve on the Ranch’s various committees. Our Master Planning Committee performed extensive research to seek out the best replacement items to suit the Ranch’s desired aesthetic. This involved multiple field trips to other parts of the Valley to observe lighting, benches, design schemes, etc. We appreciate their hard work immensely.

And last, but certainly not least, I’d like to remind everyone not to miss our Dobson Ranch Yacht Club’s Annual Lighted Holiday Boat Parade on Saturday, December 19th.

The parade begins at 6:30 pm at the south end of Lake 7, near the fountain. Inside tip: Come early and grab a prime spot between Laguna Park and the Saratoga Rec Center.

Special and sincere thanks to all the Yacht Club members who put their creative skills on display, and to fellow Board Member and Yacht Club Commodore Chris Diamond for helping to coordinate this cherished annual tradition.

Your Neighborhood Water Awareness

In September, I challenged RoundUp readers to guess how likely it would be to receive two inches of rain during the then current monsoon season. It turned out not to be very likely at all. We only received 0.76 inches of rain this monsoon season. For those who guessed less than one inch, a big pat on the back. The run-off from the two rain events this season was about zero. Most of the rain was absorbed with almost no benefit to our plantings around the house or Ranch. Another monsoon season has come and gone.

Do you know how much you pay in wastewater charges? Where do wastewater charges come from? They are on your water bill and are a very important part of our City of Mesa utility system. Yes, wastewater is collected from each house in the Ranch and is sent to the sewer treatment plant for processing and disposal, but that is another story. This story is about how we are charged for wastewater. The City only wants to charge for water that goes down the drain for treatment. Household water consumption usually ends up in one fashion or another going down the drain, except for the water used to irrigate the landscape. The City assumes the outside landscape is dormant in December through March and uses no water, i.e., all the metered water is used just in the house. The meter reading during December through March consequently reflects the amount of

It’s not often that I receive a “Letter to the Editor.”

But, this is one that I wanted to share with everyone in the community.

The letter was emailed to me on November 11th by a resident I do not know, who specifically asked me not to use her name if I printed her letter in the December RoundUp. “Having only been in Dobson Ranch just a year, I am still adjusting. Of course, I starting receiving Ranchers' RoundUp immediately. I would glance at it and toss it aside. ”However, this month I would like to say, ‘What a GREAT and INTERESTING issue!’ I loved the article about MY mail carrier.

I even used someone from the classified ads. And, I also liked knowing where to recycle unusual items. Thank you for this publication and all who contributed to it.”

After I wrote back and thanked her for her kind words, she responded...

“That was my resolution last year and will be for 2021... to take time to THANK people for all the effort that goes unnoticed.

Most of us just do not take the time to do so, even though time is all we have recently. Continue the good work and I will continue to read.”

wastewater generated only in the home. The City then develops its wastewater charge “based on 90% of the average monthly water use for the three lowest water usage months from December through March.” The water used during the rest of the year would then include all the additional water used, such as for irrigation.

Well, we know most homes have some plants that are watered year-round and the City recognizes there may be irrigation water used during December through March that could impact their wastewater fee calculation. So, the City of Mesa has provided a way for the residents to tell the City what kind of irrigation goes on during the winter months. The City will then calculate a standard irrigation usage value and provide a credit to the homeowner. We are starting our call for candidates for the three Board of Director seats that will be filled at the April 2021 Annual Meeting of the Members. Each position is for a 3-year term.

Serving on the Board of Directors for Dobson Ranch can be a fulfilling volunteer experience. Whether you are a long-time resident or new to Dobson Ranch, serving as a board member means you can partner with other residents in building a strong sense of community.

The Board of Directors are responsible for serving their neighbors and making sound decisions regarding finances, amenities, events, policy and governing documents. It is an endeavor that requires a time commitment of monthly meetings, committees, and executive sessions. It requires education on how homeowners’ associations run and their responsibilities to the members. These members are your neighbors and every decision will impact them. It can be very rewarding to see your input come to fruition in the aesthetic qualities of Dobson Ranch as well as sound policy and finances.

Revised Residential Architectural Guidelines

On December 8, 2020, the Dobson Ranch Architectural Committee held a workshop to review the Residential Architectural Guidelines draft that was put on hold when the COVID pandemic hit. The draft of the Guidelines has been on the website for review. At the workshop, some minor adjustments were made.

If you would like to see the recording of the workshop discussion, you can go to the website calendar and click on the link to the meeting.

On December 22, 2020, the Dobson Ranch Architectural Committee will vote to adopt the new Guidelines. The Dobson Ranch Architectural Committee members have thoughtfully considered all the changes knowing that these will affect their neighbors. The Guidelines were also reviewed by the Association’s legal counsel and they will become the Guidelines that staff will utilize for code enforcement. The Guidelines are meant to enhance the aesthetics of the entire community. Having Guidelines that are enforced ensures that our community maintains a standard that can be relied upon by the residents within the community.

2021 Annual Assessment and Payment Options

Your 2021 annual assessment will remain the same as your assessment in 2020, for a total amount of $552. You can pay annually, quarterly or monthly. There will be no increase to your annual assessment for 2021.

You may pay your assessment using either of the following methods: 1. Setting up your payments through our online payment portal.

2. Utilizing your bill pay services with your banking institution.

3. Mailing your check to our new P.O. Box. 4. Placing your check in our dropbox near the La Casita office.

If you are making an assessment payment using our Payment Portal either by debit or credit card, checking or savings account information, you will need to set up a new account on our new payment portal at www.dobsonranchhoa.com.

You will need the following information to make your assessment payment online located at www.dobsonranchhoa.com. First, click on “Make a Payment” located at the top of the website. The next webpage will include the Assessment Payment Portal (the blue button) where you can set up your payments.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - The Circle of Life

Every month, Conservation Corner brings conservation-related tips and ideas to readers of Ranchers’ RoundUp. Conservation is important because a smaller environmental footprint today helps to create a more sustainable tomorrow. Here is a monthly recap of some easy ways we can all be environmental stewards in 2021.

JANUARY is the month to put into action the resolutions you set for the New Year. Is it to recycle more? Then now is a perfect time to review what is and is not acceptable in the City of Mesa’s blue barrel recycling program. Over 95% of Dobson Ranch residents recycle at home through weekly curbside pickup, let’s make sure we are doing it correctly. I have caught myself putting empty glass food jars and cereal boxes into the blue barrel, only to remember that these items are no longer accepted. Check out the updated list at MesaRecycles.org (or on the ad on page 23).

FEBRUARY is a great time to sign up for a Citizen Science Project and lend a helping hand to the environment by contributing to scientific research. With your help, scientists can better understand what is going on around us so they can offer solutions to potential problems. Check out a favorite Ranch project at RainLog.org or SciStarter.org to get started.

In MARCH you may find yourself doing a bit of spring cleaning. Dobson Ranch makes it easy with the Community Clean Up and Shred event. As you clean out your closets, please remember to donate your unwanted clothing instead of throwing it out to lessen the millions of tons of textiles that go into landfills annually.

APRIL is a favorite conservation time on the Ranch. It’s Water Awareness Month and Earth Day is April 22nd. Now is the perfect time to get that Smart Irrigation Controller you’ve been thinking about. These devices automatically schedule watering sessions based on your individual landscape needs and our Water Management Committee offers controllers to residents at a substantial discount. More details to come in the spring on how to get yours.

As you enjoy MAY’s flowers while walking around Dobson Ranch, remember that feeding of wildlife (fish, fowl, feral cats, and turtles) is not permitted in the common areas/lakes (Section 6 Common Area Usage, 6.7). Not only is feeding human food harmful to wildlife, it leads to pollution, disease, non-migration, and overpopulation. Instead of feeding the wildlife, bring out your smart phone and enter what you observe at iNaturalist.com.

As the summer heat begins in full force in JUNE, SRP recommends changing your air filter(s) every 30 days and using mid-grade pleated filters. Simple air filters work best by allowing more air to flow than “high-performance” filters, resulting in air conditioners that do not need to work as hard.

Speaking of summer heat, you may find yourself in JULY wishing you had a shade tree or two by your walls that are hit hardest by the sun. SRP customers are able to get two free shade trees through their Shade Tree Program. More details to come in early 2021.

America Recycles Day is every NOVEMBER 15, a national program where we are encouraged to make personal pledges to recycle and to buy recycled products. Recent pledges have included discontinuing the use of shower gel; choosing a bar of soap instead lessens the estimated 1.4 billion empty bottles tossed out every year.

And, as DECEMBER rolls around yet again, remember that homemade gifts are priceless, wrapping paper is not recyclable, and Christmas trees are acceptable in the green yard waste barrels.

The overseeding process is complete, the seed has germinated well and it is time to transition into maintenance of the turf for the winter. Sod is a living thing and like all living things, appropriate care during the first few weeks is critical for proper health and development through the rest of the season. There are three key components to keeping a healthy lush green lawn through the winter: Mowing, Watering, and Fertilizing. Mowing and Watering will be covered this month.

Mowing:

• The first mowing should occur at the 10th to 14th day after germination when the entire area is approximately two to three inches tall.

• Follow the 30% rule for mowing -- never remove more than 30% or 1/3 of the leaf at each mowing. This will keep you from pulling out your new seedlings.

• A rotary mower can be set to mow at 2-1⁄4” to 2-3⁄4”.

• A reel mower on higher quality turf can mow the turf at 1”

to 1‐1⁄2”.

• Grass should be mowed when dry and with sharp blades. Mower blades should be kept frequently sharpened to ensure good cuts.

• Remove the clippings during the first mowing. Repeat the mowing when the grass grows about one inch above the set level.

Watering:

• Approximately 14 days after installation, and after the first mow, it is time to switch your watering schedule. The schedule designed to help germinate the seed is not the same needed to maintain established grass. You can begin watering your lawn once a day for eight to ten, up to 15 minutes.

• The key now is to water deeply and efficiently. Thirty minutes after watering, the soil should be wet six inches deep. You can determine this by pushing a long screwdriver or probe into the ground. There should be no difficulty penetrating four to six inches deep. To prevent runoff and pooling, add intervals and reduce time. If there is a dry area, adjust the sprinkler heads accordingly.

Watering the grass more deeply and less frequently will encourage it to grow deeper roots.

After four weeks you can limit the watering to three times a week or less, up to once every 3 to 10 days. It could change according to the temperature variations in your area.

In January, your timer should be adjusted again to water every 7 to 14 days.

After a winter rain, you can shut off the water for one or two cycles.

Water established turf in the early morning, when water pressure is high and evaporation is less.

If footprints stay in the grass for more than five minutes, it’s time to turn on the sprinklers. A bluish grey tint also indicates stress and lack of water.

If you have ET or ‘Smart’ controllers, change the setting to "cool season grass."

This will take care of watering your winter lawn until late next spring.

Temperature, wind and rain will affect watering frequency. Only water enough to avoid wilt between watering and wet the entire root zone.

Ensuring Our Lakes Are Maintained

Though the days get shorter and cooler and the nights become longer as we approach the winter solstice, this year landing on Monday, December 21st, there is still a lot getting done here at the Ranch, and especially around our lakes.

The invasive species warning signs are in and are being installed at the boat ramps on Lakes 1 and 7. The signs warn of potentially damaging organisms that can be transported into our lakes by improperly cleaned watercraft and equipment.

They also have information on them as to where to purchase boat and fishing permits here at the Ranch.

The fall fish restock was completed on Tuesday, November 3rd – unlike other events that happened on the 3rd, we actually know how many fish were delivered and where they landed!

The fish stock included a nice surprise of 1,000 Largemouth Bass that were previously thought to be unattainable this year.

The bass were distributed proportionally throughout Lakes 1, 3, and 7.

Our first batch of 20 lake habitat units has been delivered and the units are being installed in Lake 1. The staff will be “pinging” their locations with GPS and those coordinates will be available for either fishermen to seek out to try and land a trophy catch that might be patrolling the area looking for prey, or for them to avoid due to the possibility of snagging their cherished lure. As a side note: the habitats are designed to be non-snag, that is...“designed” not “guaranteed!”

A Lake Management Plan has also been created and sent to the Board of Directors for approval and implementation. The

Lake Management Plan was the product of a joint committee comprised of the Water Management Committee and the Lake Habitat Committee along with input from non-committee residents, staff and recommendations from our contracted lake biologist. The Lake Management Plan is basically a framework for the decision-making process and time sensitive actions for lake quality matters. The Plan is designed to help ensure that our lakes are properly and deliberately cared for and maintained.

Our committees remain hard at work and we are excited to continue to help maintain and improve our wonderful lakes next year and well into the future, and to help make Dobson Ranch the best place to live!

Managing the Lake Biology to Achieve an Aesthetically Pleasing Lake Appearance

Q: Tell us about your background.

RM: By the time you read this article, I will have celebrated my 81st birthday, which means lots of schooling and jobs along the way. I was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1939, and graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1961 with a BS Degree in Science. I went to Idaho State University for a Master’s Degree in Physics which I received in 1963. I have held various positions with companies such as: EG & G; Westinghouse Astro Nuclear; Westinghouse Nuclear; Electric Power Research Institute; AirResearch/Garrett; and Honeywell. I retired from Honeywell in 2001. During my career I was called many things, some of which were Scientist, Physicist, Engineer, Project Manager, Contract Manager, and Program Manager. One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is 54 years of membership in the American Nuclear Society and 40 years as a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Q: How long have you lived in Dobson Ranch and what is your family status?

RM My wife Peggy and I will be married 40 years in December. She also worked at Honeywell as an Engineer. We moved into our brand new Dobson Ranch home in April of 1981. The area was still under construction at that time, and we bought a lake house lot on Lake 5, which is the lake behind the Dobson Shores business area. One of the perks that we didn’t realize we were getting is that we have no across-the-lake neighbors after 6:00 pm or on the weekends.

Q: Explain what it is that you do as the Water Management Committee Chairperson.

RM: My role as committee chairperson is to call and preside over regular monthly meetings, prepare a meeting agenda and meeting minutes, distribute pertinent information to the committee and generally be aware of what is happening in the community with regards to water issues. The committee also reviews all documents that go before the Board or to ADWR (Arizona Department of Water Resources) before they are submitted for approval.

Q: Why did you get involved in this Committee?

RM: The oldest record that I can find of my service on the Water Management Committee is from an email dated January 12, 1994. I believe that I was a walk-on volunteer because we lived on Lake 5 and I suddenly became interested in what was happening at the lakes. There were really no requirements to be a committee member other than to live on the Ranch. I haven’t been able to get away from it since, so if anyone wants to be chairperson... the job is yours.

Q: Who else serves on the Water Management Committee and when does it meet?

RM: The WMC is currently composed of the following members: Kathrine Blomquist; Dusti Ide; Renee Gorman; Steve Kandybowicz and Ed Ricci. Both Renee and Steve represent our Landings Association Unit. Our Board President, Allen Johnson is also a member, as is Craig Wilson, our Water Management Consultant. The Committee meets the first Monday of each month at La Casita at 5:30 pm.

However, with our current environment, we also hold a Zoom meeting for those who wish to stay at home.

Q: What is the one thing that you would like to see change on the Ranch and why?

RM: I believe it has already happened and that is more owner participation in all of our events and meetings. New homeowners should attend at least one meeting in their first year of living on a lake to see what goes on behind the scenes.

Q: Are there any specific goals that the Water Management Committee has set?

RM: I would like to see the Dobson Ranch Lakes Management Plan approved by the Board as soon as possible. We would like to manage the lake biology to achieve an aesthetically pleasing lake appearance and the lake water levels to maintain nominal water levels across all the lakes.

We will work closely with the Lake Habitat Committee to get the biggest bang from our wonderful volunteers.

Q: What is your top priority on the Water Management Committee?

RM: Our top priority right now is to put together a spring water awareness program and begin the preparations for the 2021 ADWR yearly report. Before COVID-19 hit us, the Water Management Committee used to sponsor several educational events each year, one in the spring associated with the Annual Pancake Breakfast and another in the fall associated with the Fall Fishing Derby.

Q: What is the current stipulation in effect with ADWR? RM: ADWR came into being in the 1980s. Their charter is to govern all water use in Arizona. The Ranch is currently operating under the third ADWR Management Plan which will continue until 2023. We have been meeting regularly with our Water Attorney, Executive Director and Water Management Consultant to make sure that we maintain our strong relationship with ADWR. The current stipulation requires the association to deposit $20,000 into a special water conservation account to be used for water management projects including both turf and lake water usage.

Recreation Happenings From the Recreation Director’s Desk

By Jesse Wright Recreation Manager I know this has been one crazy year, but thank goodness it’s almost over! We have been doing our best to come up with virtual and “sociallydistanced” events for the community and I want to thank everyone for participating. I am excited that Christmas is right around the corner and the Recreation Department has been busy decorating the Recreation Centers for the holidays.

We are anxious for 2021 to arrive and have some exciting programs and events scheduled. In January, we will have a new Virtual Painting Class on Saturday, January 9th. This class will be for ages 8 and up. Sign up online through ActiveNet. The cost is $5 per participant, which includes canvas, paint, brushes, apron and table covering (a $30 value).

Our Bark in the Park event will be held on Saturday, January 23rd at Laguna Park. You can sign up to participate in three virtual contests (best trick, dog owner lookalike and ugly sweater) by emailing your photo and video entries beginning January 4th and ending January 15th at noon to Avé at Awright@dobsonranch.com. There will also be several vendors there that cater exclusively to your canine. We will have fenced in areas for big and small dogs, so grab your furry friends and come on out and enjoy the fun. Social distancing rules will apply. Thanks for all the 2020 memories and I look forward to making many more in 2021!

Tennis Tip for December: Unforced Errors

When a baseball outfielder attempts to catch a high pop up ball coming straight towards them and just as they try to catch it, they end up dropping it. That is a perfect example of an “unforced error,” in which no one caused the player to drop the ball but themselves. Many tennis players often display unforced errors during match play. Here are just a few items that may contribute to unforced errors: • Hitting the ball too hard (height + speed = distance).

• Creating “topping” (rolling racket face over the ball too soon which sends the ball into the net).

• Not playing high percentage tennis and trying to send the ball in a low percentage area of the court.

• Not giving yourself a “margin for error.”

• Not having better footwork to get to the ball, to hit it comfortably and to be balanced as well.

• Playing in a calm emotional state and not being aggressive as often (country vs. city).

• Don’t be angry with yourself after you make a mistake… simply stay calm and “forget about it.”

How do you avoid unforced errors in tennis?

Here are 6 simple ways to help you cut down on your errors.

• Use more topspin on the ball.

• Give yourself room. Aim your shots 3 to 4 feet inside the sideline and baseline.

• On deep shots, move back and hit the ball high.

• Hit more spin serves. Serving with spin, especially topspin, allows you to clear the net safely.

• Become a smart returner. Give yourself more margin for error by hitting most of your returns crosscourt.

• Dip your passing shots cross court. A crosscourt dipping ball makes your opponent bend and reach at the same time.

Dobson Ranch Clubs Dobson Ranch Retirees’ Club

Our year will end with the club meetings on hold. It is still not clear when we will be able to formally gather again as a club.

Nonetheless, we will continue to participate in our outdoor activities. This includes biking, hiking and line dancing. Some members have also elected to informally gather outdoors to socialize. This is done mindful of social distancing and using masks. We are fortunate in that we can take advantage of our great winter weather.

In years past, our club has worked with St. Vincent de Paul to help families in need. We will do that again this year. Because of pandemic restrictions, we will need to conduct our Adopt a Family Program differently. St. Vincent will give us information about families to include ages, gift options, clothes sizes, and food needs. We will use an online system to allow members to be able to select items they wish to purchase for the families.

We have a system in place to gather all the gifts in such a way so as to allow delivery of gifts to the families while following distancing and mask restrictions.

Our bylaws call for election of officers annually. That process has already begun. We will be contacting members to let them know who is running for offices. Just when everyone thought elections were done, we will soon be asking for votes. At least there won’t be any campaigning.

First Halloween Tournament in the Covid-19 Era a Success! Record “Drop-In” Attendance Continues…

We resumed our neighborhood tournament schedule on Halloween Day for the first time after our common experience of COVID shutdowns last spring which affected most of everything we used to do. It was a great competition (see photo at end of article), and the Gillies/Misner Elves studio provided some exceptional prize memorabilia. Gina continues to prove her artistic brilliance by taking a “busted” pickleball and turning it into a masterpiece! Frank does his part by keeping the Elves who help in line, despite their periodic work stoppages and demands for overtime pay.

We continue to practice distancing and other guidelines, including keeping sanitizers courtside. Let’s continue to observe the guidelines and try to stay safe while we await the possibility of receiving a preventive vaccine soon. We will be observing our “winter” hours for “drop-in” morning pickleball play until the heat returns next spring: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 8:00 am. Our evening play on Monday and Thursday evenings starts at 6:30 pm under the lights.

Of course, Dobson residents do have access to the courts anytime between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm seven days a week, but if you want to experience interaction with a varied group of player personalities, all with their own athletic abilities and strategies, please join us for “drop-in”, meet some new people 18 THE DOBSON ASSOCIATION

She has a long path ahead of her and she needs our support.

Wendie has moved to Florida. She is with Waylon and her three grandsons. She has had treatment and doing so much better. It is good to have the Wendie we knew back. She is working hard. She needs prayer on her path to good health.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! We really do have so much to be thankful for on the Ranch. Let's remember to count our blessings each and every day.

The Board of Directors values our input. They have supported the “Master Plan” and have spent thousands to keep our courts updated.

Many decisions are better made with the input of the tennis players. As a homeowner, your concerns can be heard. The Recreation Department and our Tennis Pro Kwong Young can help with tennis activities like a Dobson Ranch “Tennis Ladder” or “Family Competitions.”

Concerns such as our courts used by non-residents need to be addressed. Do you have a concern? Join us by calling the Recreation Department at 480-831-7464. Let’s make our Tennis Club an “Add In!”

NOVEMBER 2020 As you may know, we’ve added several new virtual “Clubs” on our Dobson Ranch App for you to “join” and many of our residents have already done so. For those of you who would still like to join one or more of our virtual “Clubs,” there’s no time like the present! Once you join a virtual club, you’ll be able to receive targeted communications (or push notifications) via the App. No matter what your interest or where your home is located on the Ranch, we have a “Club” for you. And, the best part of joining a virtual “Club” is there’s never any dues to pay or meetings to attend. You just sit back and let the reminders come to you on your phone or tablet!

For those of you who are already committee members or have an interest in a particular committee, you are invited to “join” one or more of the following: the Board Meeting Club, Master Planning Club, Budget and Finance Club, Recreation Club, Lake Habitat Club or Water Management Club.

If you have a particular interest in sports activities, you are welcome to join the Pickleball Club, the Tennis Club or the Swimming Club.

Dobson High School English Teacher Shares Her Passion for Helping Others

Dobson High School English teacher and human relations leader Kim Klett has been teaching about the Holocaust and the importance of human rights for 29 years.

As a curious person by nature, Klett enjoys sharing her love for learning. The desire to motivate and expand her student’s worlds outside the classroom are one of several reasons that she recently received the Wilbur Murra Lifetime Achievement Award in Social Studies Education from the Arizona Council for the Social Studies.

Klett shares that the lifetime award designation is exciting, and that she has much more to accomplish and continues to learn new things about the Holocaust as there is still important research being conducted and new books being written on the subject.

“It’s wonderful to be recognized not just for my work with students and teacher trainings across the country,” Klett says. “It acknowledges and connects all the outside pieces to my classroom. I think of all the survivors who have visited my room and how lucky I am to know so many incredible people and teach their stories.”

Beyond the classroom walls

Klett’s dream to teach a semester Holocaust class began in the 1990s. Today, the year-long course is expanded and includes the exploration of genocides that are still happening across the 20 THE DOBSON ASSOCIATION

globe. While it can be challenging to explore dark times in history, Klett introduces a variety of activities into her student’s literature. For example, AP students read “When the Stars Fall to Earth” by Rebecca Tinsley, a novel about the plight of five Darfuri refugees. To provide another perspective, Klett arranged for her students to Skype with the author and human rights activist. Tinsley spoke with students, answering questions, and discussing the recent atrocities happening in Cameroon. To further engage her students, they will participate in a class project, recording books for children traumatized by the violence in Cameroon as part of The Global Campaign for Peace and Justice in Cameroon.

Inspiring students by example

Klett shares that she likes to lead by example doing interesting things with her life, such as her work with The Welcome to America Project. She spends time in the nonprofit organization’s warehouse collecting items to help refugee families set up households.

Because bicycles are the main form of transportation for refugees, last year with the help of the Dobson Ranch community, students held a fundraiser and were able to donate 14 bikes.

“I just want to inspire people to learn about the Holocaust and genocide, Klett says. “It means a lot to have such incredible support for our students from the Dobson Ranch community.”

Mesa Earns Golden Prospector Award

The City of Mesa’s Office of Economic Development was recently awarded a Golden Prospector Award from the Arizona Association for Economic Development (AAED) in the category of Multimedia Promotion for its work on Mesa’s Asian District branding. The Golden Prospector Awards were established by AAED to encourage and recognize excellence, innovation and creativity in economic development.

“I’m proud to see the unique, vibrant and symbolic branding created for Mesa’s Asian District recognized with this award,” Mayor John Giles said. “The Asian District is a remarkable area where people can immerse themselves in the richness of Asian cultures, and I commend the collaborative efforts that went into developing an eye-catching brand to match.”

The Asian District branding effort was recognized for its effectiveness in achieving its goal of establishing an inclusive Asian Multicultural District and for its innovation and creativity by incorporating into its logo the tangram, a seven-piece Chinese geometric puzzle that dates back 2,000 years. The logo features a square comprised of the tangram pieces, symbolic of the different Asian cultures coming together in a unified community while maintaining the individuality of each culture.
