PlowinguptheAmericanprairies,whichoriginallyweredensewithgrasses givingnotumblingspace,providedopenareaswheretumbleweedcould thrive.Itsurelydid,sproutingbeforecropscould,loweringyieldsand complicatingharvests.HerbicidesdevelopedpostWorldWarIIhavehelped tocontrolit.
Whydotumbleweedstumble?NativetothearidflatsteppesoftheUral MountainsinRussia,theplantdispersesitsseedsbytumbling.Inthefall,asthe plantisdryingoutandtheseedshaveripened,specializedcellsatthestem basedryoutallowingittobreakawayfromitsroot,likeleavesfallingfrom theirbranches.Agoodgustofwindandtumbleweedsdotheirthing distributingseeds.

GeorgeTihanyiisalong-time residentofDobsonRanch.He wasborninHungaryand livedthereatayoungage.He remembersridingaRussian cattlecartoalaborcampwith hisparentsandtheyescaped togetherfromEastGermany. Hisfamilyluckilywasableto movetotheUSandsettledin Ohio.Georgeandhisfamily livedinOhiofor13yearsandfinallymovedtoArizona toexchangethesnowforwarmerweather.George movedtoDobsonRanchin1978andstayedforgood.
GeorgeattendedArizonaStateUniversityandreceivedhis bachelor'sdegreein1967andhismaster'sdegreein 1968.Georgestudiedsecondaryeducation,history, politicalscience,andGerman.Georgeistrilingualand explains"IspeakHungarian,German,English,andalittle bitofFrench...justenoughtogetintotrouble,"helaughed.

George'scareerwasworkingasahighschoolprincipal andteacherformanyyears."Iwasahighschoolteacher andthenaprincipalforfiveyearsofthecontinuation schoolforMesaPublicSchools.ThenIswitchedtoRio SaladoCollegeasanAdministrator.ItaughtAmerican history,politicalscience,driver'sed,aswellasGermanand English,"Georgeexplained.
"MyveryfavoritesubjectItaughtwasEconomics.Forone project,Irememberhavingmystudentsputtogethera budgetandtheyhadtofigureouthowtheywantedtolive, suchas,howmuchtheywantedtospendonanapartment eachmonth,howmuchtheywantedtogoouttoeat,and otherexpenses.Then,Iwouldhavethemfigureoutwhat kindofajobthey'dhavetobeabletoaffordthatlifestyle. Itwasagoodlessonandtheyenjoyedit,"reminisced George.
GeorgeinitiallybecameinvolvedintheDobsonRanchHOA in2016whenhewasfullyretiredandranfortheBoardof Directorsandwaselectedasamember.Hethenbecame chairpersonoftheArchitecturalCommitteeandworkedon severalplanstoreviseamenitiesontheRanch.Duringhis tenure,heworkedonproposalstobuildadockatthe SaratogaRecreationCenterandaddarestroomtoLaguna Park.


GeorgewasalsooneofthefoundersoftheDemocratsand FriendsClub.Itstartedwithhisneighborknockingonhis dooroneday.Georgeremembers,"BarbaraPyleRogers liveddownthestreetfrommeonPlaya,andshedroveby onedayandrangmydoorandaskedifIwasaDemocrat andIsaidyes.Shethenaskedthatwegettogetherand formaclub!So,Barbara,SandraFisher,andIgottogether andorganizedtheclubin2010.Wehappenedtoestablish thefirstpoliticalclubinDobsonRanch.ThentheRepublican PartyandtheIndependentPartystartedtheirclubs.Sonow wehavethreepoliticalclubshere!"AsGeorgehas
mademanywonderfulmemoriesinDobsonRanch,thereisone memorythathewillneverforget,becauseitisfrozeninhis mind(nopunintended)!
"FrankMiznerandIwereontheBoardatthetimeandhe cameupwiththeideatodoapolardipintheLaCasitapool duringJanuary,ourcoldestmonthinArizona.Wegottogether withseveralotherhomeownersearlyinthemorningandthe waterwasabout40degrees.Wealljumpedintogetherand laughedaboutitthroughchatteringteeth,”Georgelaughed. AsidefromhisworkwiththeHOA,Georgehasalso volunteeredhistimetootherorganizationsincludingRio SaladoCollegeandSunSoundsRadio,whichcaterstothe blind.SunSoundsRadioisnotapublicradio,asausermust firstapply,makeaconnection,andthentheycanlistentoit 24/7.Theradiostationreadsbooks,newspaperads,stories andproducesmaterialforthevisuallyhandicapped,allfree ofcharge.
IntandemwithSunStudiosisRioSaladoCollegewhere GeorgeservedastheDirectorofsiteoperationsandworked onorganizingfundraisingeventsintheformofbeerfestivals tobenefitSunSoundsRadio.Thebeerfestivalswereheldin differentlocationsacrossArizona,includingthemetro-Phoenix area,FlagstaffandTucson,withupto7,000attendeesat eachfestival!Georgeandhisteammanagedthebeer festivalsforover28years!
AspassionateasGeorgeisaboutvolunteerwork,George makessuretospendtherestofhistimewithhisfivewonderful grandchildren.
