Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

They say, "You are what you eat" and if making good food choices makes you a healthier and happier person, why are healthy food trends seemingly misunderstood and becoming a thing of the past? This semester I will be researching the advantages of choosing to obtain a vegetarian lifestyle and why some individuals are making arguments that are extremely against the practice. This topic is appropriate for a semester of sustained research because there are multiple viewpoints on the issue (including people who have experienced positive health benefits when they cut meat out of their diets, people who disapprove of the industry's animal treatment, and people who strongly feel that there are extreme health risks and financial burdens that come...show more content...
(Wiki) The film for me shined light on the dark aspects of American food industries, influenced me to do further research on the topic, and evidently considerably influenced my perspective of food. While the vision of animal cruelty painted in the film ultimately made me decide to become a practicing vegetarian, I would mainly blame my continued lifestyle choice on the benefits that I experienced when I initially made the transition as well as the harsh realities of the unsanitary procedures reveled in the film. Overall I would say, vegetarianism has made me a healthier person by making me constantly aware of what I put into my body (a main reason that I believe the issue is worth research), it has cured an esophageal health problem that I have been having since birth, and best of all in an essence the lifestyle choice lifted a huge weight off my shoulders by giving more energy, better physical health, and overall has made me a more confident person. Because of this positive experience, I am an extreme advocate for the way of life, and this topic is particularly compelling to me because I have a difficult time understanding the prejudices that make vegetarianism a national controversy. In my research, I hope to gain greater insight on the health deficiencies that align with vegetarianism and eventually crack the myth of strict dieting being difficult to adhere to (especially for people with lower economic statuses or people on the run). How Do I Learn to Write? Reading and writing go hand–in–hand. Those who learn to write, write so someone will eventually read it. Those who learn to read, learn to write through reading other people's work. But, one must first learn how to do one of the following to succeed in both. So, how does one learn to write? The best, most concise, writers develop from avid readers. Through reading, I am always learning how to write. I believe reading is essentially the foundation of learning to write. With active reading skills I can not only get better at writing, but have the power to excel with my writing experience through different styles of writing. Once I learn to write well in one style, I can then challenge myself to read different styles of literature. Aside from through reading, I didn't learn to write. Writing is a trait that can only be acquired by way of reading literature. Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, I can learn a plethora of things from others through writing. Writers are the teachers of new readers. If one reads fascinating articles, they will be taught to write fascinating articles. Likewise, if someone is a dedicated reader of mysteries they will have an easier time writing mysteries than a reader who doesn't like mysteries. I have been asked for reflections of articles, frequently in high school. Every month, we were obligated to turn in four one page responses to four articles we're given. Although this helped me develop my basic academic writing Get more content
"For decades in this country we have accepted the barbaric consequences of a profit–driven health care system that bullies and denies us basic freedoms. Therefore, we are not free" (Redmond 76). Since Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law in 2010, health care has been the topic of many heated political conversation. At the root of that discussion is one underlying question: is health care a moral right? Helen Redmond takes the stance that "Access to Health Care Is a Human Right". Redmond states five different examples of why health care is a human right. In addition to giving statistics on why we need to reform health care, Redmond give us examples of real Americans who have struggled with the big bully know as the greedy healthcare providers. Leonard Peikoff takes the the opposite view by claiming that "Health Care Is Not a Right". Peikoff first dissects the concept of morality and how it is explained in the Declaration of Independence. He then goes further to state that giving health care for free to other is actually violating the rights of the doctors that treat them. I believe that Helen Redmond made the best argument. Both authors make valid explanations on why they believe their reasoning is better. Peikoff makes that point in reference to viewing health care as a human right that "We must reject the idea that doctors are slaves destined to serve others at the behest of the state"(Peikoff 92). When Peikoff says this he is stating that while giving
Cells are some of the smallest organisms around. All living things consist of cells, and yet they are invisible to the naked eye. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. Cells are made up of many different parts which allow them to function properly.
All cells are separated from their surrounding by a cell membrane. The cell membrane regulates what enters and leaves the cell and also aids in the protection and support of the cell. A cell membrane is similar to the walls surrounding your house.
In plants the cell membrane is surrounded by a cell wall. The cell wall is outside the cell membrane, and its purpose is to help the membrane protect and support the cell. Since the cell wall is very porous, water, oxygen,...show more content...
Chromosomes contain the genetic information that must be passed to each new generation of cells. Chromosomes are what you pass on to your children to make them who they are, it's the DNA of a cell.
The cytoplasm is the area between the nucleus and the cell membrane. The cytoplasm contains many important structures. This area is basically the main place where you will find structures that help the cells stay alive.
Mitochondrion is an importance structure that lies in the cytoplasm area. Mitochondrion is the plural word for mitochondria, which is the key organelle that converts energy from one form to another. Mitochondria changes the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use. The mitochondrion contains two special membranes. The outer membrane surrounds the organelle, and the inner membrane has many folds that increase the surface area of the mitochondrion.
Ribosomes are the structures in which proteins are made. Cells that are active in protein synthesis are often crowded with ribosomes. Ribosomes are composed of RNA and protein. Some ribosomes are attached to the membranes, and some are free in the cytoplasm. Ribosomes are among the smallest of organelles. They are no larger than 25 nanometers in diameter. A nanometer is equal to one billionth of a meter.
Many cells are filled with a complex network of tube like things known as the endoplasmic reticulum. The endoplasmic
Lives worth Living
Survive and thrive. How we make our lives worth living is driven not just by our desire to be part of the human story expressed by the past but by our quest to create and connect our own stories to a seemingly unconstrained endless future. By reaching beyond our immediate circumstances and beyond realities that may not be of our own making, we can find a way to truly make our lives worth living and worth telling about. There are times in everyone's life when it feels as though we stand in quicksand, unable to break free and move beyond. In Hamlet the quicksand grabs a hold of all the vengeful characters and sadly drags them down. We see a similar myopic view of life in Grendel who can't seem to escape his hatred...show more content... The result is a lack of focus followed by inaction. He is unable to interpret events and he limits himself to the small immediate world of hatred, vengeance, and self destruction. Hamlet muses that the only way to dream is through death, "To die,to sleep–To sleep, perchance to dream–ay, there's the rub." (3.1.65–66) Hamlet tragically fails to see possibilities, fails to see that dreaming is possible in life, fails to take control of his environment. Instead he resigns himself to be a victim of events. Grendel falls into a similar trap. He wants to communicate with people but he remains an outsider looking in at the villagers. They only look at him as a monster and nothing else. It was at this moment where Grendel realized that "[he] understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears. [he] understood that, finally and absolutely, [he] alone exist[s]" and that "[he] creates the whole universe, blink by blink" (22). He can not be accepted by humans and he is destined to be a lonely outcast unable to escape his tragic fate. Anger and revenge are frequent themes in Hamlet who obsesses over his hatred of Claudius who intends to murder, "And now I'll do 't. And so he goes to heaven. And so am I revenged.–That would be scanned. A villain kills my father, and, for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send To heaven." (3.3.75–80) Grendel
Different Learning Styles
Students have different ways to learn. Some people are hands on learners or visual learners. Teachers try to adapt the way they teach; to the way their students learn the best. The information that is being taught should be made fun so that the students remember the information. Schools are also using new technology to help students learn. Different learning styles have different effects on people.
Different learning styles are the talk of many school districts from near and far. The study of different learning styles has gone back since the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. We all know that people have different ways of learning, so teachers try to teach the way their...show more content...
Prediction of educational psychology course grades by age and learning style scores did a study to show how different learning styles effect test and course grades. They use 105 college students who took four tests. ?The best predictions of the course grade were the students? ages and two Inventory of Learning Processing and Fact Retention. The Deep Processing scale measures high–order type of items which include analyses, evaluations, and comparisons of information; whereas, the Fact Retention scale measures low–order type of items which include factual information and memory recall.? (Gadzella,2002) The ILP (Inventory of Learning Processing) is assessed by behavioral–process orientation and used to study actual classroom behaviors. Deep processing scale assesses to what extent to which ?subjects critically evaluate, analyze, organize, and compare and contrast information.? (Gadzella, 2002) Fact Retention scale assesses ?how effectively specific factual information is retrieved from one?s memory.? (Gadzella, 2002) After doing these studies for many years it has been said that ILP is very reliable and valid. ?In 1983, Lockhart and Schmeck studied the validity of the four ILP scales with the different components of a course and demonstrated how these scales can be useful to instructors who would like to ?conceptualize and account for students' individual scores? The Apostle Paul was born around the year of 3 A.D. in the Jewish community of Tarsus. When he was born, his strict Pharisee parents dedicated him to the service of God and did all they could to bring him up as good Jew. From age five to ten he studied under his father, a Jewish Pharisee. His father taught him the scriptures and traditional writing. Paul was sent to Jerusalem at about ten years old to attend the rabbinical school of Gamaliel. Gamaliel was the most famous rabbi who is mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 5:34). Gamaliel soon discovered Saul was an enthusiastic student and expected great things from him. He felt that he would be a great leader. Saul was dedicated in all his learning that he...show more content...
All true Jews accused Him as enemy of Israel. Saul believed that anyone who followed Jesus should be put to death. With this thought in mind he returned to Jerusalem and offered his service to the high priest to persecute anyone who is opposed to the way of the synagogue. Saul took his job so fiercely that every worshipping assembly feared his name. He had a temper and was merciless. He was quick to punish. Saul literally dragged believers, cast them into prison, and sentenced them to death. Angered by his futile efforts to stop the spread ofChristianity, Saul prepared a trip to Damascus, where he had heard many Christians were hiding. Not only were they hiding, they were also preaching Christ in the synagogues there. So, accompanied by a troop of armed temple guards, Saul rode out of Jerusalem to the city of Damascus. As they neared the outer edge of the city, a shaft of light much brighter than the noonday sun suddenly fell upon the little company. The group fell to the ground trying to protect their eyes from the blinding light. A voice from heaven spoke to Saul. "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"(Acts 9:4). Then Saul asked, "Who are you Lord?"(Acts 9:5) The voice replied, "I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute"(Acts 9:5). Then Saul asked what he should do. Jesus answered "But get up and go into the city, where you will be told what you must do (Acts 9:6). Saul was blinded for Get more content
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms
