The dance of the matachines GLENCOE, Minn. – The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Patroness of the Americas) is celebrated each year on December 12. This feast day is one of the most popular among Hispanic Catholics in the United States. It is customary for the Hispanic community to observe a nine-day novena leading up to the feast day, a devotion celebrated at home. Traditionally, the faithful gather early on the feast day to sing las Mañanitas, a serenade of hymns in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The celebration concludes with celebration of Mass that may include various elements: processions, people placing bouquets of roses on the altar to the Virgin, and costumed native dancers called matachines. Pictured, the congregation of St. Pius X in Glencoe watches as matachine dancers process to the front of the church during Mass on Sunday, December 12 in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
