Great Lakes. Great Adventures.

Every season tells a different story There isn’t just one perfect time to experience Michigan. Each season transforms the scenery and brings different reasons to visit, from summer days beside the Great Lakes and spectacular autumn colour to spring blossoms and snow-covered winter escapes. The best time to travel simply depends on the Michigan you want to discover.

Spring | March – May

Winter loosens its grip and the landscape bursts back into life. Orchards blossom, wildflowers brighten forest trails and waterfalls thunder with snowmelt as the scenery turns green once again. Late spring is particularly rewarding for travellers looking for fewer crowds, fresh landscapes and the first opportunities to enjoy the lakes, towns and outdoor spaces before the busy summer months.

Summer | June – August

Long, warm days make summer one of the most popular times to explore. Beaches come alive, boats return to the water and waterfront towns embrace the season with festivals, outdoor dining and evenings beside the lakes. It’s an ideal time for Pictured Rocks, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinac Island and the Upper Peninsula, with hiking, kayaking, cycling and scenic drives providing endless ways to make the most of the longer days.

Autumn | September – October

Forests provide the backdrop to one of the year’s great natural spectacles as brilliant reds, oranges and golds sweep across the state. Scenic roads

become journeys through autumn colour, while orchards, cider mills and harvest experiences add another dimension to the season. Crisp days, spectacular scenery and quieter roads make autumn an unforgettable time to discover Michigan by car.

Winter | November – February

Then winter changes everything. Waterfalls freeze into towering curtains of ice, forests disappear beneath deep snow and Great Lakes landscapes take on an entirely new character. Skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling bring adventure to the season, while snow-covered towns and peaceful wilderness provide a completely different perspective on the Great Lakes State.

Our favourite time to go

For a classic Michigan road trip, late May to early October offers the greatest choice of experiences. June to August brings warm weather, longer days and the full Great Lakes summer atmosphere, while September into early October is particularly rewarding for cooler days, changing colour and a more relaxed touring experience.

You might come for the freedom of the open road and find yourself lingering over lunch beside the water. Arrive in search of outdoor adventure and discover vineyards, fascinating communities and stories you never expected. Whatever inspires you to travel, there’s always another experience

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Where Lake Superior creates a masterpiece Stretching for more than 40 miles along the wild southern shore of Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore reveals one of Michigan’s most spectacular landscapes. Towering sandstone cliffs rise above crystal-clear water, their surfaces streaked with shades of red, orange, green and gold. Natural arches, secluded coves, cascading waterfalls and pristine beaches complete a setting where the power of Lake Superior meets the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula.

Experience Pictured Rocks from the water

The most memorable way to appreciate the scale and colour of the cliffs is from Lake Superior itself. Scenic cruises travel alongside dramatic rock formations, sea caves and towering sandstone walls, revealing landmarks such as Miners Castle, Lovers Leap and Chapel Rock from an entirely different perspective. As the light changes throughout the day, so too do the colours of the cliffs. For an even closer encounter, guided kayaking adventures offer the chance to paddle beneath immense rock faces

and into sheltered coves, surrounded by the clear blue-green waters of Lake Superior.

Explore beyond the cliffs

Step away from the water and another side of Pictured Rocks emerges. Hiking trails wind through forests towards waterfalls, beaches and spectacular overlooks. Discover Munising Falls, walk towards the distinctive Chapel Rock or follow sections of the North Country National Scenic Trail along the clifftops high above the lake. Seek out quieter stretches of sandy beach, listen to waterfalls hidden among the trees or pause where forest, sandstone and freshwater stretch towards the horizon. Whether seen from the water, explored on foot or experienced from above, Pictured Rocks rewards more than a passing visit, revealing why this extraordinary corner of the Upper Peninsula is one of Michigan’s defining Great Lakes experiences.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Where the dunes meet Lake Michigan

Stretching along 65 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is shaped by sand, wind and water. Towering dunes rise above brilliant blue freshwater, while sweeping beaches, forested trails and elevated viewpoints reveal an everchanging coast. Dense woodland suddenly gives way to vast expanses of sand, while endless horizons create views that could easily be mistaken for the ocean.

Climb the dunes

For many visitors, the adventure begins at the Dune Climb, where an enormous sweep of sand invites you upwards. Reaching the top is part of the fun, with views across the dunes towards Glen Lake providing the reward. Those looking for a bigger challenge can continue along the Dunes Trail towards Lake Michigan, while gentler routes offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy the surroundings at a more relaxed pace.

Take the scenic route

Not every unforgettable view requires a hike. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive winds through forests and dunes to a series of overlooks, revealing dramatic vistas across Lake Michigan, Glen Lake and the surrounding countryside. Stop along the way, step onto the sand and take in the immense scale of the coast, or follow trails through woodland and towards quieter stretches of shoreline.

Beyond the dunes

Sleeping Bear Dunes is about more than its famous viewpoints. Spend time on sandy Lake Michigan beaches, step into the area’s maritime past at historic Glen Haven or venture into nearby Glen Arbor and Empire, where cafes, independent shops and a relaxed lakeside atmosphere provide natural places to pause. As evening approaches, head back towards the water and watch the sun sink beyond the horizon. Whether you climb the dunes, follow the scenic drive, walk the trails or find your own stretch of beach, this remarkable corner of Michigan reveals the surprising scale and beauty of a freshwater coast that feels anything but inland.

The icons of Michigan’s great lakes

Mackinac Island:

Where time moves at a different pace Leave the mainland behind and cross the water to a place where cars disappear, bicycles and horse-drawn carriages take their place and historic buildings overlook the Straits of Mackinac. Set between Michigan’s two peninsulas, Mackinac Island combines natural beauty, fascinating history and a genuine sense of escape. From the moment you step off the ferry, the change of pace is unmistakable. The sound of horses, bicycle bells and boats in the harbour provides the soundtrack to an island that has protected its distinctive character for generations.

Explore on two wheels

One of the simplest pleasures of Mackinac Island is exploring by bicycle. Follow the scenic perimeter road, stopping at Arch Rock and quiet stretches of coast as you travel between forest, limestone formations and expansive Great Lakes views. Much of the island lies within Mackinac Island State Park, where walking and cycling trails provide even more opportunities to discover its quieter side.

Stories around every corner

High above the harbour, Fort Mackinac tells the story of a strategic outpost shaped by British and American rule, while elegant Victorian architecture recalls the island’s emergence as one of America’s earliest summer resorts. Nowhere captures that era quite like the Grand Hotel, whose famous porch overlooks the Straits of Mackinac. Horse-drawn carriage tours, historic homes and beautifully preserved streets add to the feeling of having arrived somewhere unlike anywhere else on your journey.

An island to savour

Browse independent shops, linger over lunch or discover the island’s famous fudge, handmade here for generations. As day visitors depart on the ferries, the atmosphere changes, making an overnight stay particularly rewarding. Evenings bring quieter streets, waterfront dining and the chance to experience Mackinac at its most atmospheric. Watch the sun set across the Straits, then wake to an island beginning another day without the sound of traffic. Mackinac Island isn’t simply somewhere to visit. It’s somewhere to leave the car behind, change your pace and experience a side of Michigan wonderfully removed from everyday life.

Taste Michigan Where the Great Lakes meet the table Michigan’s story isn’t only found in its landscapes. It’s there in vineyards and orchards, farm stands beside country roads, fishing communities along the Great Lakes and restaurants, breweries and markets that turn local ingredients into memorable flavours. Travel through the state and what you eat and drink becomes another way to understand the places you visit.

From orchard to table

Michigan produces an extraordinary variety of fruit and crops, with cherries and apples among its most recognisable flavours. Around Traverse City and the northwest Lower Peninsula, orchards, farm markets and roadside stands offer everything from fresh seasonal produce to baked goods, cider and cherryinspired creations, bringing the connection between land and table into the journey itself.

Wine country by the water

Across northwest Michigan, vineyards appear between orchards, rolling countryside and glimpses of brilliant blue water. The Leelanau Peninsula and Old Mission Peninsula are at the heart of the state’s wine story, where tasting rooms showcase locally produced Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and other cool-climate wines.

Fresh from the Great Lakes

Along the waterfront, Michigan’s relationship with the Great Lakes reaches the plate. Locally caught whitefish is a regional favourite, served from relaxed

harbour restaurants to traditional fish fries, while smoked fish and other specialities offer another taste of communities shaped by life beside the water.

Raise a glass

Michigan’s drinks story extends beyond the vineyards. A thriving craft beer scene has made Grand Rapids synonymous with independent brewing, while cideries and distilleries add even more variety. Seek out a local taproom, visit a producer along your route or pair a Michigan-made drink with dinner at the end of the day.

Discover Michigan’s maritime heritage Where the Great Lakes shape everyday life Surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes, Michigan has been shaped by water for generations. Historic lighthouses stand watch over busy shipping routes, working harbours connect communities to the lakes and mighty freighters continue traditions that have defined commerce across the region. Follow the shoreline and maritime history isn’t simply something preserved in museums; it’s part of everyday life.

Guiding lights along the Great Lakes

With more lighthouses than any other US state, Michigan’s coastline is dotted with beacons that once guided ships through challenging waters. Today, these landmarks provide atmospheric stops along a road trip. Climb Big Sable Point Lighthouse for sweeping views across Lake Michigan, follow coastal roads in search of historic lights or simply pause beside one of these enduring landmarks as part of your journey.

Stories beneath the surface

At Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary near Alpena, an extraordinary collection of shipwrecks tells 200 years of Great Lakes shipping history. Discover their stories at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Centre, join a glass-bottom boat tour or paddle above wrecks visible through the clear waters of Lake Huron. Preserved beneath the surface, these vessels reveal another fascinating dimension to Michigan’s relationship with the water.

Where the Great Lakes keep moving

Few places demonstrate the scale of Great Lakes shipping quite like the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie. Watch 1,000-foot freighters rise and fall through the locks as they travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes or take a boat tour for a close-up view of this remarkable working waterway. Elsewhere, fishing harbours and waterfront communities reveal a more intimate side of life on the lakes. At Fishtown, historic fishing shanties and docks preserve the character of Michigan’s commercial fishing heritage while remaining part of a living waterfront.

From lighthouse beams and working harbours to passing freighters and shipwrecks beneath the surface, the shoreline tells a story that continues to unfold with every journey around the Great Lakes.

Discover Michigan’s wild side Waterfalls, wilderness & star-filled skies Beyond Michigan’s headline icons, an even wilder side of the state awaits. Venture into the Upper Peninsula and roads lead through immense, wildlife-rich forests towards thundering waterfalls, clear freshwater springs, secluded lakes and vast stretches of wilderness. Here, the spaces become bigger, the towns smaller and every journey brings another reason to stop the car and head outdoors.

Where the water falls

With more than 300 waterfalls across the Upper Peninsula, you’re rarely far from the sound of rushing water. Among the most impressive is Tahquamenon Falls, where tannin-rich waters create the river’s distinctive amber colour before tumbling over the mighty Upper Falls. Continue to the Lower Falls, where a series of cascades surrounds a wooded island, or seek out smaller waterfalls tucked beside trails and scenic roads elsewhere across the peninsula.

Into the wilderness

In the western Upper Peninsula, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a vast expanse of forest, rivers, waterfalls and rugged Lake Superior shoreline. Follow trails through old-growth woodland, pause above the unforgettable Lake of the Clouds or simply take in the sense of space that makes this remote corner so rewarding. Further east, nature creates something altogether different at Kitch-iti-kipi, Michigan’s largest freshwater spring, where a viewing raft carries you across

remarkably clear, emerald-green water, revealing bubbling springs, submerged tree trunks and trout beneath the surface.

When darkness falls

Far from city lights, the Upper Peninsula reveals another spectacle overhead. On clear nights, constellations and the Milky Way stretch across remarkably dark skies, while the Northern Lights can sometimes add ribbons of colour when conditions are right. Find a quiet lakeshore, look upwards and experience a side of Michigan that becomes even more captivating after sunset.

Michigan’s waterfront towns Small places. Big reasons to stay a little longer. Some of the most enjoyable moments are found between the headline attractions. Along the Lake Michigan coast, welcoming towns combine beautiful waterside settings with historic main streets, independent shops, galleries, restaurants and a strong sense of local identity. They’re places to stop for lunch and find yourself staying for the afternoon, or plan for one night and wish you’d allowed two.

Along the Lake Michigan coast

Follow the shoreline and there’s always another reason to leave the main road. Experience Dutch heritage and colourful spring tulips in Holland, where the much-photographed Big Red lighthouse stands at the entrance to Lake Macatawa, or discover the galleries, boutiques and creative spirit of Saugatuck, with beautiful Oval Beach just beyond town. In South Haven, wander between the walkable downtown, harbour and sandy Lake Michigan shoreline before watching the sun set beyond its distinctive pierhead lighthouse. Further north, Petoskey combines Victorian architecture and independent shops with views across Little Traverse Bay, while nearby Harbor Springs offers an inviting waterfront setting. From here, follow the famous Tunnel of Trees, where M-119 winds beneath a canopy of woodland with glimpses of Lake Michigan appearing between the trees. Continue towards Charlevoix, another appealing stop where lakes, beaches and a lively downtown come together.

Reasons to linger

The pleasure of these communities often lies in the simple things. Browse somewhere independent,

visit a farmers’ market, find a table beside the water or walk from town to beach as the afternoon unfolds. Search the shoreline around Petoskey for the distinctive fossilised coral stones that carry the town’s name, immerse yourself in Saugatuck’s arts scene or simply leave enough room in the day to follow whatever catches your attention.

More than a stop along the way

What makes these towns special isn’t one headline attraction, but how easily they become part of the holiday itself. Historic architecture, local flavours, sandy beaches and lively waterfronts provide plenty of reasons to park the car and stay awhile. Spend the night and there’s time for dinner beside the water, an evening stroll and a quieter start the following morning before the day’s journey begins.

Discover more Michigan Beyond the lakes & landscapes Michigan’s story reaches far beyond its natural wonders. Cities shaped by music, innovation and creativity sit alongside communities where cultural traditions remain part of everyday life. From the birthplace of Motown and the heart of America’s automotive story to world-class art, independent brewing and a little piece of Bavaria, there’s still plenty to surprise you.

Detroit: The city that moved the world

Few American cities have influenced modern culture quite like Detroit. This is the birthplace of Motown and the Motor City, where automotive innovation and legendary music have left their mark on the world. Step inside the original home of Motown Records at the Motown Museum, see Diego Rivera’s celebrated Detroit Industry murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and spend time in neighbourhoods filled with restaurants, markets, murals and striking architecture. Detroit adds an entirely different energy to a Michigan holiday, revealing a city whose creativity continues to shape its identity.

Grand Rapids: Art, culture & craft

On the western side of the state, Grand Rapids brings together art, culture, food and one of America’s best-known craft beer scenes. Wander among internationally renowned sculpture and beautiful gardens at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, discover museums and public art or spend time exploring the city’s restaurants and neighbourhoods. Then raise a glass in the place known as Beer City USA, where independent breweries have become another celebrated part of the city’s character.

Frankenmuth: A little piece of Bavaria

Then there’s Frankenmuth, Michigan’s Little Bavaria, where German heritage comes to life through Bavarian-inspired architecture, traditional food, festivals and a welcoming small-town atmosphere. Settle in for one of the town’s famous family-style chicken dinners, browse Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store, or simply wander Main Street and enjoy somewhere that feels completely different from anything else on your route.

From Motown and motor cars to sculpture gardens, craft beer and Bavarian traditions, Michigan continues to change character as you travel.

Up here, the extra miles are part of the reward.
