design processprocess design this studio involved incorporating a landscape feature or folly into winn park. in these sketche and diagrams in the early stages of the process i was investigating a way to weave a bench in and out of the topography.

design response design response throughout the process i continued pushing a theme of weaving a structure in and out of the topography, but the main difficulty was finding a structural system to fit the aesthetic. these various process models illustrate both the light and structural capabilities of this installation. once i discovered the overall functional “zones� ( areas for seating, standing, viewing, resting, etc.) on the hillside it was only a matter of adapting the parametric truss system. this parametric truss system consists of: a light weight steel frame truss slotted with apertures of various sizes to hold the secondary bamboo and rope structure.

this sketch was an exploration in the bundling of bamboo to form terracing for stairs.

design intent: the initial intent and development of this project began with re-interpreting the volume of space in between the existing buildings. solid/void relationships as well as a rhythm of convex spaces became part of the plaza schematics. the plaza further became visually activated through the exposition of circulation on the facing interior facades, this extension of the circulation also allowed for the entire alloted program to fit into the existing shell creating a syncopation of old and new building.

this site, similar to the epa project earlier is located in midtown atlanta. the similar street section and conditions apply with the exception ofaa the primary peachtree street facade on the west.

the intent of this design was to shuffle the mixed use program vertically in order to stimulate more unprogrammed interaction. this would be further facilitated by the integration of the sky lobby as a social condenser where various programs can interchange between the different levels.

the museum was to serve as an autonomous urban block that hovered 30 feet above street level. the large, most prominent east facing facade would be used as an interactive led facade that illustrated the latest contemporary art expositions inside. on top of the museum you will find the main sky lobby which also serves as a large green space for the buildings inhabitants. overall the building seeks to invent a new vision of the tall building in atlanta.

building as installation this project focused on the idea of transforming an initial exploration of a light modulating art installation into a building. more specifically, a building which connects the proposed program with the high museum across the street. this program consists of: contemporary art musem spaces, science laboratories, art laboratories, residences and retail. this new intervention is to serve as a catalyst to the already activating arts district in midtown.

surface as points: module as mediator This series of explorations involved extrusion and submersion of textures through light over time.

This resulting “push and pull� of the surface results in a spatial field of points. This spatial field of points creates alternative interpretations of structure. //wall //floor //ceiling

design integration design integration The initial concept for the design of this Light Forum intends to fuse together concepts of: initial Light Prop design development, urban contextual relationships, and programmatic needs.

1. Light Prop Concept: “visually negotiable structure”(Eliasson, time as matter MOMA 2009) One of the main underlying themes throughout the Light Prop experiment was the extrapolation of topology from a given source. Although Initial explorations involved extrapolation of an image, the building hopes to achieve a similiar dynamism through extrapolation of the relationship between urban nature, and programmatic responsibility. This theme becomes reference for: space, structure and material. It serves as especially significant in the understanding of the Light Forum through its manipulation of surface, texture and light.

2. Urban Response: Urban Finger I feel the Light Forum should respect it’s neighbors to the utmost, so much so, as to become an urban space itself. An urban space which not only invites street life, but also serves in reverence to the High Museum across the street. The ground level of the Light Forum should create dialogue with the High’s plaza created by Piano. The urban space should also continue the city’s texture and extend as a multi-directional space that catalyzes existing urban conditions.

3.Programmatic needs: Hybrid Exchange The function of the Light Forum should serve as a space of exchange and collaboration within a myriad of disciplines and social classes; thus resulting in the blurring and integration of: visitor, guest, and inhabitant. This, in turn, provides a further opportunity to begin creating a dialogue between public and private spaces, as well as indoor and outdoor environments.

Some initial programmatic intentions involve the extension of exhibit space as circulation throughout the building. I think these design themes can begin to further inform the fusing of inhabitants, guests, and visitors that experience the space.

Manuel DeLanda A Thousand Years of Non-Linear History

introduction introduction According to the United States Bureau of Statistics, The United States has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world. In fact, 2,304,115 people were incarcerated in U.S. prisons and jails in 2008. Furthermore, approximately one in every 18 men in the United States is behind bars or being monitored and finally, the United States has less than 5% of the world's population and still comprises nearly 25% of the world's prison population. I think it was statistics like these and the impending socio-economic repercussions that prompted me to explore themes of space and power in architecture and more specifically carceral space. Carceral space, or any space modelled on the idea of a prison, served as the initial root of my examination. In the first stages of my exploration of carceral space one of the main relevant architectural precedents is the panopticon. Once I reviewed the panopticon and its historical relevance I then began to diverge into two tangents of research. The first of which involved topics of space and power in architecture and society, and the second of which involved a tracing of the history of incarceration and its relevance to my local context, Atlanta.

Widespread incarceration and subjugation of individuals surfaced as an amalgam of symptoms of colonization, institutionalization and societal expansion across the world. More specifically in Europe, with the increase and expansion of empires as well as corresponding economies, some of the major exports from North America were sugar and cotton. Along with the mass export of these goods was the commodification and enslavement of a whole race of people. In fact, in the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries few states ranked higher in exploitation of slave and convict labor than that of Georgia. It is this exact issue of Convict labor that began to reveal a twisted, shameful history of human rights injustice in Atlanta. Conditions in the city after the civil war were dire. Atlanta’s economy was founded on industry and export and now found itself crippled with a depleting workforce. In turn, Atlanta adapted and began to exploit other forms of incarceration by introducing convict labor camps.

Founded in 1867 by Mr. Harry English, the Chattahoochee Brick Company in Smyrna, Georgia, was conceived in tandem with many other combustion-related companies at the time. these companies were formed both to catalyze and respond with the industrial boom in and around Atlanta. As demand for ever-increasing exportable commodities like cotton and sugar grew, the need for supporting infrastructure grew.as well. Since most of the local companies shared similar goals they also used similar means of convict lease labor. However, it is The Chattahoochee Brick Company that utilized a force of over 175 convicts to create about 200,000 bricks a day.

The bricks produced by inmates at the CBC were used for massive amounts of construction around Atlanta. In Robert Burns’ I am a fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang he states “ The chain gangs working the roads of the Deep South came to exemplify the brutality of southern race relations, the repressive aspect of southern labor relations, and the moral and economic backwardness of the region in general.” This evidence suggests that a great deal of what is most distinguishable about Atlanta’s role as a modern hub of transportation infrastructure is built upon foundations of convict labor.

Additionally, in 1886 the United States Bureau of Labor observed that “ the brick making industry around Atlanta, formerly employing about 600 hands has been broken up almost entirely by convict-labor competition”. It also must be noted that about 30% of Georgia’s brick production relied on convict-labor, and this was more than any other state at the time.Almost immediately after the turn of the century the exploitation of convict labor was deemed illegal, thus resulting in the loss of the CBC’s workforce. In order to prepare for this necessary decline of productivity Mr. Harry English drained the last reserves of the CBC’s energy and closed the business stating that all of the brick sold would be surplus from the convict labor system. In the article “A different kind of Slavery” Douglas Blackmon states “Beginning in July 1908, a commission established by the Georgia Legislature convened a series of hearings into the state’s system of leasing prisoners to private contractors. Meeting early every day and late into the night to escape the city’s excruciating heat, the panel called more than 120 witnesses over three weeks to give testimony, witness after witness-ranging from former guards to legislators to freed slaves-gave vivid accounts of the system’s brutalities.

Guards were routinely drunk and physically abusive.Testimony described hellish conditions at Chattahoochee Brick and other operations owned by Mr. English, a luminary of the Atlanta elite and a man hardly anyone in the reviving city would have associated with human cruelty. But by 1908, Mr. English- despite having never owned antebellum slaves-was a man whose great wealth was inextricably tied to the enslavement of thousands of men.” After the last convict left CBC it was no less than 3 months later that the CBC was crippled to nearly less than 50% of its usual profits. this resulted in the CBC’s closing until it was bought by the General Shale Brick Company in the late 1930’s. Today, the General Shale Brick Company utilizes approximately 10-15 percent of the site for storing and disributing bricks. The existing industrial equipment stands ruined and decrepit. Forgotten in time. awaiting reclamation.

This series of explorations involved the construction and design of the newest building on the site, the Distributor. The overall form was subject to connecting either side of the site. The structural system was conceived as a mega scaffolding system with hanging floorplates on the interior. aa the design of this table was a true exploration of material, structural connections, and the overall integration of an historical artifact. the artifact was an old spring and base plates from an 1970’s chevrolet camaro. the materials were comprised of: reclaimed cherry hardwood, copper and aluminum conduit, maple, and reclaimed glass. the connections included: arc welds, pin connections, base plates, and a series of recessed tap drill points that hold the spring (artifact) to the cherry base. the final design ultimately became an amalgam of responses to various contingencies. these ranged from: dealing with the aesthetic consequences between a flush connection of base to spring and spring to tabletop, all the way to tackling a welded connection of two tube profiles to create a seamless tangent of spring to conduit to maple top. also, during the final stages of the process of welding the spring to the tube i wanted to create a similiar oxidation characteristic in the connection. interestingly enough, i buried the table for 3 weeks in mulch and soil to increase the rate of oxidation. overall i found the table to be a great exhibit of design process integrating materiality, function and aesthetic.

design synopsis design synopsis the design of this bookshelf was a similar response as the previous table, but this time i mainly wanted a shelf to complement the table .01. with that in mind i just wanted a contextual piece of furniture that used a similar materiality and overall aesthetic.

the shelf was to be designed with minimal lines and to carry the inherent qualities of the materials. the shelves consist of three 3� reclaimed cherry hardwood planks, reclaimed steel square tubing and solid steel pins to hang the planks. i chose the rusted steel tubing in order to: a. complement the artifact from table .01 and b. complement the existing color of the cherry hardwood. overall i liked working with this piece of furniture, it was minimal and allowed me to explore more connections between different materials and it also paved the way for me to further hone my skills in welding

the design of this table was a response to some found and reclaimed materials my professor gave me. the table costed a total of twelve dollars, all of which was spent on the 2”x8” pine. the inspiration piece or “artifact” of this piece was the reclaimed poplar. this poplar was hand chosen and milled at a local mill. the poplar still retained its original quality with worm holes excavated throughout the softer grain. it was this detail and contrast in the grain that helped me envision this table as a split table. i saw this table as a representation of a colliosion of forces. overall, the table is made of: reclaimed poplar, georgia pine, and copper conduit. the two tables were conceived of as two “benches” that would be attached via copper conduit. the whole concept for the connections of the table was to use no glue, metal or screws as attachments. in all, the table is held together through pin connections at the legs, copper conduit in between, and biscuit joints under the poplar to create a “floating” tabletop.
