PART 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 INTRODUCTION This report was prepared to document original materials on the main house, dairy barn, and seed shed on the Bassett Farms Conservancy for Preservation Texas. Samples were collected on February 23, 2019 by Historic Preservation graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin in Materials Conservation: Lab Methods course under the supervision of instructor Izabella Nuckels.

Laboratory testing and analysis of the collected samples occurred from February to May 2019 in the Architectural Conservation Lab by Lauren Kelly, Ohuntoluwase Oliyide, Dan Scott, Vangie Ulila, and Anthony Vannette (project manager). The results have been compiled into this material analysis summary report for Preservation Texas to reference. Detailed lab reports are available through the UTSOA Architectural Conservation Lab.

1.2 BACKGROUND INFORMATION Henry Caleb Bassett was born in 1817 in New Haven, Connecticut and settled in Texas after the Civil War, leaving two wives in two different states. He purchased the 160-acre Home Place tract in 1871 and married his third wife, Hattie Ford Pope, in 1874. The following year, Henry and Hattie welcomed their first son, Jay, who was born in their new home.

The 1875 farmhouse, home to three generations of the Bassett family, is the oldest extant two-story brick home in both Limestone and Falls Counties. It is a center-passage home with two rooms on each floor, which did not long serve the needs of its owners. A one-story rear addition was built not long after. The original one-story front porch was replaced with the current two-story form in the 1920’s, and at one time the porch was screened in to provide outdoor sleeping space. In the 1960s, the Bassetts further renovated the home to include a bathroom on each floor in a separate two-story rear addition. The interior was updated around this time as well. Willie Ford Sparkman, the last of Henry Bassett’s grandchildren, continued to invest in repairs to the house long after she was advised to demolish. It now stands as a testament to the determination and success of the Bassett family.

Bassett Farm comprises 2,349 acres on four separate parcels straddling Limestone and Falls Counties. The last tract was added in 1915 by Hattie Bassett. The farm is also on the border of the Blackland Prairie and Post Savannah Oak ecoregions, and the rich soil made the area valuable for farming, particularly after the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railway in Kosse, which connected the rural region to urban markets. The Bassetts grew corn and cotton and grazed cattle.

Willie Ford Sparkman, the granddaughter of Henry Bassett and last surviving member of the family, passed away in 2010 and left her family farm in the care of Preservation Texas. It was her wish that the site would be used to tell the story of farm life in Texas. In 2015, Preservation Texas initiated a prairie restoration project with Texas Parks & Wildlife’s Pastures for Upland Birds program. The following year, two fields were cleared with herbicides and seeds were planted to restore the land’s native species. The grasses will eventually provide excellent grazing for the Bassetts’ Polled Hereford cattle. The Bassett Farms Conservancy is making plans for the future of this important site.

1.3 MATERIAL SAMPLE LIST AND ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY The samples were collected on February 23, 2019 at the Bassett Farms Conservancy near Kosse, Texas. Locations sampled were the exterior and the first floor of the Bassett House, the interior of the Dairy Barn, the interior and exterior of the Seed Shed, and the collection of doors that were in storage. Analysis was conducted under magnification and using specialized laboratory testing in the UTSOA Architectural Conservation Lab to identify and document material characteristics of the samples.

PART 2: BASSETT HOUSE - WOOD ANALYSIS 2.1 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this analysis is to examine and document original wood samples obtained from the interior of the Bassett House to determine the species.

Samples were collected from the subfloor and framing of the parlor and kitchen, the ceiling of the hallway, as well as the trim, floor, and ceiling in the living room.

2.2 SPECIES IDENTIFICATION All wood samples were similar in character and consistent with softwood species characteristics as defined in the wood species identification guide. The samples contained a combination of latewood, thick-walled tracheid’s, thin-walled tracheid’s, earlywood, resin cells, and ray cells. These samples also contained particularly large resin cells and canals. According to the handbook and corresponding representative labeled wood samples found in the lab, each of the analyzed samples correspond to softwood pine species.

2.3 RECOMMENDATIONS Given the construction date and indigenous central Texas pine species located in the area, all wood samples that came from the Bassett House, both structural and decorative elements, are constructed out of old growth pine, most likely shortleaf, longleaf, or loblolly. Repair in all conditions where possible, however If it is necessary to replace the wood components replace them in-kind.

Unless approved by an engineer, southern yellow pine that is of new growth is not recommended for use in structural areas as it does not possess the same mechanical properties as old growth pine.

Local wood salvage yards or specialty wood suppliers in the area may provide complimentary replacements that will aide in matching both the material properties and fit and finish of the existing wood type. This is particularly important when replacing wood components in areas where there is prolonged moisture exposure like the kitchen framing. The National Park Service Brief #45 Preserving Historic Wood Porches serves as an excellent guide to better understand the step-by-step preservation of similar wood components that were analyzed in the lab. This brief is particularly helpful when assessing the integrity of the material and recommendations for preservation and replacement of historic wood construction features.

Additionally, subsequent layers were color-matched to the Munsell color system to determine the changes in finishes over time. To support returning the house to its appearance during its period of significance, color-matched commercial paint swatches are also provided.

PART 5: DAIRY BARN 5.1 WOOD ANALYSIS All wood Dairy Barn samples were similar in character and consistent with softwood species characteristics as defined in the wood species identification guide. The samples contained a combination of latewood, thick-walled tracheid’s, thin-walled tracheid’s, earlywood, resin cells, and ray cells. These samples also contained particularly large resin cells and canals.

According to the handbook and corresponding representative labeled wood samples found in the lab, each of the analyzed samples correspond to softwood pine species.

Each of the Dairy Barn samples yielded a clear representation of the softwood pine species given their analyzed and comparative characteristics. The next layer of identification of the softwood pine species is to differentiate the subspecies utilizing the earlywood and latewood color transition. The lighter-colored to darker colored distinct transitions present in the sample suggest they are part of the southern yellow pine species.

PART 6: SEED SHED 6.1 WOOD ANALYSIS The structure of the seed shed is not known to have been reconstructed, indicating that the wood members that make up the framing were harvested prior to the turn of the century. The wood has been identified as pine and like the main house, it is likely old growth pine from the region. Interior structural elements are presently in good condition, but if they deteriorate, repair is recommended over replacement. If repair proves to be unfeasible, any replacement is to be in-kind, if old-growth pine can be sourced. Unless approved by an engineer, southern yellow pine that is of new growth is not recommended for structural use as it does not possess the same mechanical properties as old growth pine.

Additionally, the wood cladding on the seed shed was analyzed and has also been identified as pine. Given that the exterior of the seed shed will be visible and exposed to the elements, replacement is . Much of it is also currently in need of replacement. For deteriorated portions here, Dutchman repair with old-growth pine, possibly sourced from other outbuildings or ruins on or around the site, is recommended. The completed repair or restoration should be repainted (both original and replacement elements) with a durable exterior coating, consistent with the recommendations provided in the historic finishes analysis of the seed shed.

6.2 FINISHES ANALYSIS All original finish samples collected from the exterior of the seed shed match one another for the earliest finish, a dark grey-blue. This was matched to Munsell 10PB 5/1. One finish sample, Seed Shed 3, lacked substrate and thus could not provide conclusive results, but it was the only sample that had an additional finish layer, a lighter blue on top of the same dark grey-blue.

Coupled with on-site examination which revealed that traces of another finish could be seen (despite heavy weathering throughout) in more sheltered areas, this was likely a second finish layer.

The interior of the door had a sequence of finishes which was generally consistent across the four analyzed samples and corroborates with on-site examination. The earliest layer was a light mint-green color (matched to Munsell 5G 9/2), followed by a medium green layer, a white layer, and finally the same pale blue that had been later applied to the entire exterior.

No traces of paint were found on the interior of the seed shed and thus no finish samples were collected from there.

Should repainting occur, which is recommended once the structure has been stabilized in order to protect the wood, matching the early darker blue is recommended for the entire exterior.
