Located in downtown Eugene, OR, this 300,000 sq ft facility serves as the city hall and main administrative building for Lane County. In order to digress from dominance and authoritative appeal of past precedents, this building serves to facilitate social interaction and exist as a resource for the entire community, housing educational programs, dining areas, and a lending library.Â

Advanced Building Technology: Residential Construction (ARCH 410)- Assignment was to create a 500 sq ft residence structurally supported, equipped with full mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

Sanctuary Park serves to dissolve social disparities within downtown Eugene. Circumvented by Eugene's administrative district this revitalization of the park blocks adds color and vitality to the city's aged context becoming a cultural and communal intersection as the gateway to downtown's historical district

DESIGN OF AN URBAN NODE IN DOWNTOWN PORTLAND, OR. STRETCHING ACROSS THE WILLAMETTE RIVER, THIS FORM SERVES TO CONNECT AND EXPAND THE LIMITATIONS OF THE EXISTING URBAN FABRIC. SYNTHESIZING INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS, RESIDENTIAL UNITS, PUBLIC SPACE, AND TRANSPORTATION. THIS FORM IS DIRECT REPONSE TO THE DENSITY AND POLLUTION OF DOWNTOWN PORTLAND, SERVING TO NOT ONLY LINK SEPARATE DISTRICTS, BUT SERVE AS A FILTRATION SYSTEM FOR THE RIVER ITSELF.

EUGENE CITY HALL The concept of this project lies in the idea that in our rapidly changing and constantly developing society, Architecture remains the sole definition of community and the physical environment. often times, however, there exists a conflict of interest between the two.

Architecture, rather than progress the human condition and perpetuate an integrated sense of commnunity, manages to produce means of displacement and division. Rather than create a holistic society, buildings have the ability to remove entire groups from their contexts and dispose of their significance. There’s a selfishness that goes along with creating great structures. Architects are left with the problem of deciding what goes where, how buildings work, how cities work, which issues and functions need to be addressed, but more importantly how the human condition should be handled. It’s an impossible task to address every function and issue our societies are faced with, however architecture remains the paramount of modern achievement. We hold the power to create civilizations from scratch and to bolster and connect existing ones. We maintain the ability to not only produce efficient cities and the structures that comprise them, but to improve the human condition and create inclusive and integrated societies. And that, to me, is the exact purpose and meaning behind architecture.

OBAMA PRES. LIBRARY SPRING 2017 - PROF. KEVIN NUTE

The Obama Presidential Center is intended to be the premier training facility for a new generation of civic leaders. In this light we have attempted to expand the original program to include a myriad of resources for community outreach and engagement. Located in Jackson Park Chicago, Illinois, this 600,000 sq ft campus functions as the Presidential archive for Obama. As a part of his vision, the site also exists as a means of developing and nurturing our nation's future leaders in addition to enhancing the current socio-economic conditions to proliferate the community of SouthSide Chicago. The bluish green groups the main entry arcades that provide access from the underground parking. The lighter green shows the food market that caters to the entire community which lacks any type of convenience store or market nearby. The orange groups the lending library available to the public while the light blue shows the education and tutoring center connected with the local school programs. The red represents the recreational fields and sports center while the beige shows the main space for the Presidential archive and gallery.

OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY - Spring ‘17 Design Studio

TIn addition to serving as a repository for the legacy

of the nation’s first Black president, this space provides educational facilitiess, recreation, various healthy food options, and a full lending library, as well as other open gathering spaces for events and demonstrations. This proposal is intended to address the many and severe issues of South Side Chicago in a holistic manner in order to reconnect and help sustain the larger civic domain.

MODERN CABIN

SPRING 2017 - PROF. ROB THALLON Located on the edge of Lake Hodges in Escondido, CA, this 500 square foot house serves as a getaway house for the Navarro family. Featuring a single pitched shed roof the timber and glass tiny house sits on a slab on grade foundation.

Due to one of the residents disability the house required a ramp which provides the main access into the house. Once inside you are greeted by the living room and staircase on your left which takes one up to the loft and sleeping quarters. To the right lies the living room and kitchen combination in addition to the full bathroom suite resting below the loft.

The structure is supported by a series of 2 x 8 composite wood beams holding up the roof while the west facade’s glass composition serves as ashear wall with the stiff steel members intersecting across. In regards to sustainable features, the house is capped by a solar panel that provides the vast majority of energy while the placement of the openings in cooperation with the climate of the environment provides for nice cross-ventilation.

SANCTUARY PARK

SUMMER 2017 - PROF. JAVIER BONNIN Focused on the principles of community and renewal this approximately 150,000 sq ft site serves as the central park for downtown Eugene, OR. The park blocks have resided as the primary nodes of public use and social interaction for the city. Current conditions provide places to rest, eat, and serve as temporal dwelling spaces for the growing homeless population. In order to assimilate this portion of the downtown population back into society and reinstill a sense of belonging in the community . MINIMAL SURFACES

With the ever-expanding capabilities of technology massive transit system concepts such as the Hyper-Loop and autonomous vehicles are developing realities. In order to eliminate the need for commuting within cities and revitalize conditions generated by these systems, the installation of mass transit networks and repurposing of existing infrastructure systems into pedestrian pathways serves to counter these effects. Utilizing parametric design and minimal surface technology, we generated an architectural system that responds to existing infrastructure systems and uses the surface area around them to form the design of the building.

ARCHITECTURE

Cultural Buildings The Obama Presidential Libary was generated and developed based upon the ideas of community, cultural preservation, and the growth and formation of our future leaders. Not just serving as the Presidential Archive for Obama, this world-class center serves to perform as architecture as a socio-economic machine, improving upon the urban conditions within Chicago’s decaying city fabric. Holding a variety of exhibition spaces, a full ending library, sports facilities, grocery stores to compensate for the lack there of in Southside Chicago, in addition to a large auditorium space that transforms into an ice rink in the winter.

Collaborating with Zachariah Pettit, our solution to the program served to reinvigorate the socio-economic conditions of Chicago as well as resinstill a sense of community throughout the area.

Institutional The new Bean Renovation has been considered a very controversial project due to its historical value to the campus. However, within the renovation itself Mahlum architects in addition to Capital Construction Inc. sought to cultivate a new space that preserved the arhectural type of Bean, but in a contemporary and sustainable way. Serving as a form of bridge between Bean East and Bean West, we designed an ALC Study Space to create a collaborative, interactive learning environment for students living in the residence hall. The study space features a series of offsetting study pods bordered by accented half walls to allow people to collaborate in an open environment but maintain their own sense of space as well. These same qualities of transparency and collaboration I strive to incorporate into all my designs.

Institutional | Cultural Buildings

ARCHITECTURE

University of Oregon Building Standards At the University of Oregon all new developments, redevelopments, and new bids are approached and composed with sustainable design aspects inlcuding existing and future land use, landscaping, building, and transportation.

Oregon’s model for sustainable development is interstitial with the growth of the campus as are sustainablity principles to our firm. Working on projects such as the Eugene City Hall which received LEED Silver recognition (theoretically) incorporating bioclimactic design and and passive strategies, in addition to the renovation of Bean Hall which will stand as one of the exemplary and defining buildings on campus, we have developed a strong palette of features gaged toward cultivating a building that not only builds upon Oregon’s sustainable initiative but focuses on what we as a firm and as architects consider matters most: water, energy, and people

Eugene City Hall Sustainable Initiative Bioclimatic passive load reduction strategies

- using hydronic radiant conditioning and decoupled ventilation, a ground source heat pump

(GSHP), integrated into a structural pile system, acts in concert with an eutectic salt phase change material (PCM) tank and heat recovery chillers to provide chilled water and heating hot water. The PCM tank operates similarly to a ground source system, but with a daily, rather than a seasonal, cycle, running an economizer cycle during Eugene’s cool nights.

Light and Air:

- The narrow floor plate optimizes daylight penetration, reducing electric light energy from ambient

dimming fluorescent ballasts. Individuals can control their task lights and glare control, as well as underfloor ventilation diffusers. The atrium serves as a return air pathway, with heat recovery at the air handlers. Users are provided views to the exterior as well as the landscaped central atrium.

Water Use:

- The roofwater capture system is revealed at the top of the building, through a truth window and source stones positioned at the top flow during rainstorms. Cycling treated water held in a 25,000 gallon cistern for re-use in high-efficiency toilets, irrigation and cooling methods make-up water reusage. Overflow and 100 percent of site stormwater is cleansed and infiltrated in a series of rain gardens located atop the terrace system.
