WELCOME TO THE

ART & DESIGN DEGREE SHOW /18 We are delighted that you have joined us for our Art & Design Degree Show. We are very proud to celebrate the diverse, original and innovative work of our final year students and to showcase the exciting creations of the next generation of artists and designers from our architecture, art, design and fashion undergraduate courses.

Our graduates go on to work for high-profile brands such as the BBC, Mothercare, Abercrombie & Fitch, Dyson, BMW, Next and Adidas. We were delighted that our expertise in preparing our students for the workplace was recognised by the 2017 British Industrial Design Association (BIDA) survey which voted our Design Products programmes joint third in the UK for producing the most employable graduates. Each year we recognise many student successes and experiences, here are just some of them. Design Crafts students won the coveted ‘Best Stand Award’ at the influential New Designers exhibition in London. Whilst Textile Design student Sophie Hingston won the W’innovate and Wilko Award with her collection of home interiors of textiles with hand-drawn designs. Design Crafts graduate Alice Funge also won the prestigious Sainsbury’s ‘One to Watch’ Design Award and New Designers National Trust Artisan and Craft Associate Prize.

Our Fine Art students took part in The Art of Sustainability Festival in Florida which focuses on debate around issues of sustainability and the environment. They experienced first-hand the commissioning of a large-scale public art piece that was seen alongside internationally renowned artists such as Kevin Duval, Tom Brewitz and John Weber. They described the experience as challenging and life-changing. From the catwalk of London’s Graduate Fashion Week, Fashion Design graduate Raabia Arif, went on to study on the Fashion and Textiles MA here at DMU, and showcased her collection ‘Splintering of the Mind’ at the GREAT Festival of Innovation in Hong Kong in April this year. The festival gave Raabia the opportunity to share her creativity, diversity and innovative fashion designs at an international level. Experience gained during an internship as a Design Assistant for renowned fashion designer Emilia Wickstead contributed to Raabia’s recent successful appointment as Design Graduate Womenswear for Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger at their head office in Amsterdam. We are also proud to say that hundreds of DMU students and staff visited New York as part of a mass #DMUglobal trip. Our Architecture students got a unique tour of the spectacular Oculus building. They had a behind-the-scenes tour by Frank Lorino, the chief architect for the building and had the opportunity to discuss first-hand the complexities of a project of this scale. Many felt the experience influenced their thoughts about design and were looking forward to applying it to their projects. We hope you enjoy the show. Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities
