Fine Art MA

The School of Art, Design and Architecture unifies a diverse range of courses that explore creative practice and teach you the skills required to become a leading thinker, practitioner and researcher in your field.

Our postgraduate courses share common skills and sensibilities associated with drawing, making, experimentation and enquiry, which make the most of our state-of-the-art facilities in the Vijay Patel Building.

Our staff are leading researchers in their field and have numerous industry connections which inform their teaching and ensure modern and industry-relevant course content. The impact of the school extends beyond the university as innovations in sustainable urban development, fine art, photographic history and modern design are explored within DMU’s creative research institutes.

Teaching Excellence Framework

Fine Art MA The Fine Art MA is designed to give you the skills for continuous development throughout your artistic, professional, and academic life. You will be supported from the outset in developing research methods and aims that are linked to your creative practice and your professional ambitions. The course will develop your specialist knowledge to an advanced level and give you hands-on experience of contemporary practice. You will be taught by exhibiting artists and research-active academics with expertise in drawing, painting, sculpture, analogue and digital photography, digital media, printmaking, public art, installation and relational practice.

You will be introduced to contemporary debates at the forefront of fine art practice and research, and assessed on your independent and creative response to these issues. You will learn how to develop appropriate research methods in order to inform your creative decisions. Throughout the course you will build significant professional practice skills, with opportunities to exhibit your work both individually and in groups. You will have access to dedicated studio space and become part of a large and dynamic cohort of Fine Art students, studying from BA to PhD level. This approach gives you access to a wide range of visiting artists and critical input, with opportunities for you to lead discussion groups and seminars.

TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT

EMPLOYABILITY

• Studio Practice Modules

Teaching is delivered through a combination of one-to-one tutorials, group seminars, lectures, workshops and field trips. You will be supported by a highly-skilled team of technical demonstrators with access to a range of workshops including metal, wood, plaster, resin and other processes, as well as CAD facilities, photographic darkrooms, studios and editing suites.

The Fine Art MA course develops the skills, attributes and knowledge necessary for a career as an exhibiting artist. However, you will also graduate with transferable skills that enhance competitiveness in a range of careers.

These skills include:

In your first two terms you will normally attend around four hours of timetabled taught sessions including lectures, tutorials and workshop and studio sessions each week, and be expected to undertake at least 31 hours of independent study each week. Part-time study is normally undertaken on a half-time basis.

You will develop the independent learning ability that is necessary for continuous professional development, enabling you to adapt to changing professional pressures and opportunities.

Many of our graduates pursue careers as practising artists, or in other closely related areas of the fine arts such as curation, public and community art, education and cultural journalism.

Others have used the transferable skills gained on the Fine Art MA in a diverse range of industries in the wider creative sector.

KEY INFORMATION Duration: One year full-time, two years part-time.

Start date: September English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 including 5.5 in each band or equivalent.

Entry requirements: You should have the equivalent or above of a 2:2 UK bachelor’s honours degree in Fine Art or a related subject.

If you have other professional qualifications or industry experience we will consider your application on an individual basis.

Facilities Our award-winning Vijay Patel Building brings all our art and design courses together, providing inspiring, flexible spaces, studios and facilities which invite creativity and innovation.

Learn from expert technicians and make use of the extensive workshops available from 3D printing and photography studios to metalworks and ceramics.

Develop your creative and technical skills as you discover your passion and expertise. Studios and hub spaces encourage collaboration between students and provides opportunities to share creativity and ideas with others.

Postgraduate students have their own dedicated study space and classrooms in the postgraduate centre, with its location on the second-floor providing beautiful views over the campus and river.
