Many, many things have been written about how to create the perfect gallery wall. But we’re going to let you in on a little secret: There’s no such thing as the perfect gallery wall.

Sure, there are general guidelines you can follow to help with the process, but don’t get too hung up on the rules. Consider these gentle suggestions instead.

At the end of the day, you should love what’s on your walls, but these guidelines can help you build a gallery wall that’s beautiful and cohesive and works well with your space.

Here are all of the tools, tips and advice you’ll need to create your dream gallery wall.

HOW TO MAT ARTWORK FOR A GALLERY WALL Choosing matting for the frames in your gallery wall is just as practical as it is aesthetic. To preserve your artwork, only add matting that’s acid-free. While you’re at it, make sure you have a dust cover over the back of your art. Less is more when choosing a mat color — for most pieces, white will enhance the colors in a piece of artwork, or, if you’d like some contrast, you can try a dark color like black. For a cohesive look that’s sure to work, choose the same color matting for every single piece in the gallery wall. Want to get more adventurous? Try matting in multiple colors, but stick to a limited palette (say, two coordinated colors) to keep the arrangement from looking too busy.

HOW TO CHOOSE FRAMES There are two directions you can go here: Either you find a set of matching frames, or you can opt for the more eclectic look of mismatched frames. A matching set of frames helps to unify the look of your gallery wall. If the artwork you own doesn’t necessarily stick to a theme, or you want to avoid the extra step of finding a variety of frames, a coordinated set is an effortless way to guarantee your gallery wall will work.

If you choose to use mismatched frames, you’ll want to make sure there is some sort of unifying factor in the art. Maybe you use different prints f rom the same source, or you choose colors or shapes that repeat throughout the pieces. The eye likes repetition, so if your f rames all vary, try to find some unity in the art or the matting.

At the end of the day, you need to love it, and the best way to be sure is trial and error. Before you hang anything on the wall, arrange all of the f rames together in one spot, such as on the floor, so you’ll be able to tell if they work together. If you’re going for a more organized, geometric feel, keeping the f rames the same size and shape will help. If you want a more collected-over-time look, play with the shapes and sizes of the f rames.

Framebridge also offers similar design help through its site and will even pair you with a designer who can make design suggestions.

For a f reeform gallery wall, start by hanging the most central or largest piece of artwork f irst, then build the gallery around it. As a general rule of thumb, you always want to keep the f rames about 2 inches apart f rom one another. To make the overall display feel balanced, avoid placing some f rames close together while others are more spread apart. The beauty of this design is that you can keep adding to it over time.

For a grid gallery wall, begin by measuring out the space you’ll need for the entire display on your wall, being sure to factor in evenly spaced gaps between each f rame. Trace the f rame you’re using on a piece of paper to make a template, then mark the top center point of the template. Use the template to plot out where each f rame will go on the wall, making a small pencil mark at the top center of each f rame’s position.

With each spot clearly marked, you can be confident when you go to pick up the hammer and nails.

When buying a budget monitor, you should absolutely check out the listing of what’s in the box.

Make sure that it’s not missing items that would drive the price above that threshold, like a stand or appropriate cables. The stand might not be an issue if you’re planning to use the VESA mount to put it on a wall or an arm. The display’s thin bezels and built-in power supply make it streamlined and tidy, and you’re pretty much looking at all screen. The base does allow it to tilt — there’s no height adjustment — and has a hole for cable management so you can pass its power cord and a VGA or HDMI cable through to the inputs in back (power and HDMI cables are included).

Along with the screen size and design, you’re getting a 75Hz refresh rate, 4ms response time and FreeSync support, which makes this a bit better for gaming and fast-moving video than your average office monitor.

On the other hand, unexciting color performance and seemingly lowerthan-spec brightness undercut it solely for that use. It’s fine for mixed use even if it doesn’t excel in any area. Also, that’s about the end of the road for features, so if you want things like built-in speakers, a webcam or VESA mounting holes you’ll have to look elsewhere.

need it for games that don’t have fast action — simulations, turn-based RPGs and so on — a USB hub, a full set of inputs and speakers. And the stand raises and lowers, swivels and supports 90 degree rotation into portrait mode, all of which are unusual for its price class. The speakers don’t get very loud and the connections can loosen when you move it, but otherwise we really like this one.

If you can afford it, the 27-inch model, PA278QV, runs $100 more and ups the resolution to 2,560-by-1,440.

LG 27ML600M-B 27-INCH FHD IPS FREESYNC DISPLAY CNET TAKE: The LG is a solid, attractive general-purpose choice with some gaming perks. Though we’d hardly call it a gaming monitor, it has features for a good gaming experience, such as the ability to overdrive the response time, a 1ms motion-blur reduction mode and an optional center crosshair. It’s slightly brighter than most, and there’s a photo mode that seems to improve the color accuracy. It’s got a VGA connector in addition to the two HDMIs (though that’s not uncommon in this price range) if you’ve got a really old device to connect.

This one goes in and out of stock rapidly, so if you need it or want it (for gaming or work) and you see it, don’t wait to buy.
