1.1 PART 1: OUR SCHOOL AND THE COMENIUS PROJECT IN FRANCE.

The administration building and the entrance Our mixed comprehensive secondary school Collège Jongkind is situated in La Côte Saint André in Isère, in the Rhône-Alpes region in France, half way between Grenoble and Lyon, the two closest major cities. We are situated between the Rhône valley and the French Alps (30kms).

Our school is named after the famous Dutch painter Johan Barthold Jongkind who spent the end of his life in our town and who is buried in our cemetery. He is considered as the father of impressionism. Our town is also known for being the place of birth of the famous French Music Composer Hector Berlioz. Our high school is named after him. There is a museum dedicated to his life and work.

J.B. Jongkind, the painter

H. Berlioz, the

music composer There are about 800 pupils, 70 teachers and 32 classes in our school. There is also a nurse, a doctor, a social worker and a pupils’ guidance counsellor but they are here 1 or 2 days a week as they work in different schools. There are 2 cooks/chefs and around 20 people who help them and who clean the classrooms. In the administration building we can see:

This totem was made by pupils from Jongkind's special needs classes in 2010.

On the basement, there is “La vie scolaire”, the students services office of our secondary school. There are 6 educational supervisors who watch over the pupils. They control late slips, absence notes, the entrance and the going out and bring security in the courtyard of our school. There is also the “CPE” (Conseillère Principale d’Education) she is the chief supervisor and she is also a pupils counsellor. There is also a big hall with our lockers and benches. There is also Berlioz room, our multi purpose room where we have conferences, concerts, theatre plays… On the basement, there are 10 classrooms (French classrooms and special needs classrooms) and 2 study / learning rooms. On the first floor, there are 6 language rooms (we learn English, Italian, Spanish and German), 3 History and Geography rooms and 3 Information Technology rooms. There is also the school library and the staffroom. On the second floor, there are 4 science classrooms (biology, chemistry, physics), 4 mathematics classrooms and 1 art room, 1 music room and 2 computers labs. There are 7 special needs classes for about 96 special needs pupils: a whole building is for them. There are different workshops in this building: a cooking workshop and a “house building workshop” (they learn carpentry, wall painting, brickwork…). To play sport, we go to the gymnasium next to our secondary school. We practise dance, team sports (football, rugby, basketball…), gymnastics, athletics etc… We go swimming in the new swimming pool in the Aquatic centre. To eat lunch, we go to the canteen of our school. 94% of the pupils eat at the canteen in our school. It’s not bad but it depends on the menu. We stay in our school for 4 years (6ème, 5ème, 4ème, 3ème), from the age of 10/11 to the age of 14/15. Collège is after primary school and leads to High school. Most of the pupils learn English as their first foreign language in 6ème. Then they take Italian (a minority) or Spanish (the majority) in 4ème. We have 4 “Bilangue classes”: pupils study English and German all along their scholarship. There is a Young Enterprise Club in 3ème, each year they create a company. There are also 3 Sports classes, one in 5ème, one in 4ème and one in 3ème. We have won many rugby cups

B- The teachers involved in the Comenius project. Teacher n°1: His name is Mr Lloret-Marti and he is French. He is our teacher of English. He is in charge of our Comenius project in our school. He speaks English with all our European partners during the exchanges and he sometimes speaks Spanish or German. He taught us a lot of things about sustainable development in English (vocabulary, facts...). He has also filmed us during our experimentations or the exchanges. He has been organizing all the Comenius activities and all the school exchanges during the last 2 years. He has taken part in all the exchanges and experimentations and will go to Spain too. He is the one who gives us all the working schedules because he organises the Comenius project with the other teachers. He has been in charge of the budget and all the administrative work. Mr Marchand calls him “The boss”. He is 44 years old. On the good side he is very serious, extremely hardworking and very involved in the project. On the bad side he is a bit impatient, too demanding and requires perfection. He loves languages, cinema, reading and cooking. He watches all the T.V series in English. Teacher n°2: His name is Mr Marchand and he is French. He is our biology teacher. He is in charge of the Comenius project with Mr Lloret-Marti. He took part in the exchange in Sweden and will go to Spain with the 6 “Comenius ambassadors”. He also took part in the exchange when we welcomed our exchange partners in France. He also participated in some of the experimentations about water, recycling and energy. He is 35 years old. He has got 2 children. He is very funny and jokes a lot. He is very practical and logical, but he is not as much organized as M. Lloret-Marti. He likes badminton and skiing. He is good at computering. He loves science and biology above all. He enjoys picking on Mr Lloret-Marti. Teacher n°3: His name is Mr Merino and he is French. He is our Information Technology teacher. We tackled the 3 topics about sustainable development with him and he organized most of the experimentations. He made us create the rainwater downspout diverter and he made us create most of the objects to improve recycling in our school. He also made us work on small wind turbines, a solar panel or light motion detectors to reduce energy consumption. We have been seeing him once every two weeks for two years. He is very involved in the project. He is always very cool and always has got scruffy hair. He is very nice and patient. He keeps saying “Okay?” or “D’accord?” when he teaches us technology and it’s funny. He loves mechanics, technology and hiking. He has got 2 children.

the final calendar. Mr Letienne is our maths teacher. He worked on the first topic with us last year. Mr Vernier, our history teacher. He worked on the first topic with us last year. We have had 2 teachers of physics and chemistry. Last year Mrs Bellier made us analyse rainwater, spring water and tap water. This year Mr Michot took part in the experimentation about energy. We worked with him on mini wind turbines and a thermal loss assessment of a classroom. Mrs Chevalier, our French teacher. She helped us write letters to the mayor and she made us write our reports. She also asked us to write short stories linked to the first two topics (water and recycling). Mrs Merabet, the Spanish teacher. She helped us write our portraits in Spanish. Mrs Delage, our Music teacher. Last year we created music instruments with objects taken from rubbish. We started creating a musical work but she fell ill. This year, our new music teacher, Mr Rey, played the accordion with a singer during the exchange in France. Mr Garces, our sports teacher, organized a badminton tournament during the exchange in France.

1.1.2. Our Comenius activities. First Topic: water. There were 3 groups/experimentations. Our objective was to reduce the consumption of water at school. -

Group 1. We fixed low flow tap water aerators on the taps of the toilets of the staffroom and of the toilets of the administration building. We calculated the tap water flow before and after the aerators. Now, we save up to 60 % water in these toilets equipped with low flow aerators. Showers and toilets can be equipped with them too.

-

Group 2. We created our own rainwater downspout diverter that we fixed on a downspout of our school to collect water for the organic garden. We can save water with this device: we can water the organic garden, wash tools and bikes… with the water collected in tanks. For further information: http://comenius-club.jimdo.com/l-eau/réalisation/

-

Group 3. We analysed and compared 3 types of water: rainwater, spring water and tap water. We found out that rainwater has no mineral constituents but is rather acidic and contains bacteria. You can’t drink it. Spring water has many mineral constituents, is neutral and contains almost no bacteria. Tap water has no bacteria (treated water), few mineral constituents and is neutral. We realized we couldn’t drink the water collected with the rainwater downspout diverter.

Second topic: recycling. There were 6 groups/ experimentations. Our common objective was to reduce wastes and improve recycling. -

Group n째1. The sorting out of rubbish at the canteen. We decided to help reduce the wastes in our school cafeteria / canteen by sorting out the rubbish. To do so, we analysed the wastes generated by the canteen. We had a meeting with the accountant of our school and talked about our ideas to improve the sorting out of rubbish at the canteen in May 2012. She took our ideas into account and as it became compulsory to recycle all the rubbish in all the canteens of our region, she had this done in November 2012: the new dishtables make the sorting out easier. We created ads to help and explain the sorting out of the rubbish

Our ad

Group n째2. Reusing objects and giving them a second life. We decided to collect all the lost school things in the classrooms and we sorted them out. We created more than 50 boxes (for all the classrooms) with stickers with instructions: now whenever teachers find a lost object, they put it in this box and whenever pupils need something, they pick it up in the box and bring it back later. We also donated some clothes and school things to a charity. Finally, we transformed old CD and cassette players into amplifiers that our language teachers will use in their classrooms.

-

Group n°3. Improve the sorting out of rubbish in our schoolyard. We designed new selective bins for the courtyard, small bins for the bus stops where all the pupils could drop their cigarettes’ fags and we wrote a letter to the mayor of our town to get more selective containers outside our school. We also created ads to show how to use the new selective bins in the courtyard. Unfortunately the mayor refused our small bins for the cigarettes’ fags at the bus stops because of an antiterrorist act stipulating that all the bins must be of a certain size and must be officially approved (the opening of the bin can’t let a bomb through). But he took our ideas of new containers into account. As for our selective bins in the courtyard, the school authorities agreed but as it implies an investment of money from our school (the bins must be enclosed), it has been delayed.

The bin we designed for cigarettes. -

Group n°4. Improve the existing solutions of recycling. In our school there is a plastic box for used up batteries but few pupils know it. There is also a container for plastic bottle caps (collected to create wheelchairs for handicapped people). In order to improve these 2 solutions, we decided to create ads and games to entice pupils to sort out more their rubbish.

Our containers for

used up batteries -

Group n°5. Reuse photocopies for printers and avoid the use of papers. We realised that we use too much paper for photocopies in our school. We suggested solutions to our teachers (a better use of our web working platform to send messages and homework, more writing…) and we created cardboard boxes with stickers to collect one-side printed photocopies to use them for all the printers in our school. We made a poster with the box. Our poster on the boxes to collect one side printed photocopies

-

Group n°6. Improving the recycling of paper in our school. We realised that the plastic boxes used in our classrooms to recycle paper were full of other rubbish or filled with crumpled paper. So, we imagined a lid on these plastic boxes to prevent pupils from putting all sorts of wastes in these boxes. We created a poster with the box.

Our box with a lid and our poster with instructions. For further information : http://comenius-club.jimdo.com/les-déchets/ Third topic: energy. There were 4 groups / 4 experimentations. Our common objective was to find ways to reduce the consumption of electrical energy and find new sustainable development means to get energy in our school. Group n°1: Using a solar panel to recharge the batteries of portable devices. We fixed a solar panel on shelves in the I.T classroom and linked the solar panel to a car battery. Then we recharged a few electrical devices (an Ipod, a mobile phone…). It takes time but it works. We can save energy with a solar panel in each school! It is expensive but it lasts 25 years.

Group n°2: Using mini wind turbines to recharge portable devices. We tested small wind turbines with ventilators. We changed the number of blades, the distance between the wind turbine and the ventilator… We found out that the small wind turbines do not produce enough electrical energy to recharge the batteries of our portable devices.

Group n°3: Light motion detectors to reduce the consumption of electricity. We carried out a study in a corridor of our school so as to reduce our electrical consumption with a light motion detector. We looked for different models and made our assembly plan. We found out that we could save up to 60% electricity.

The light motion detectors we used

Group n°4: A thermal loss assessment of a classroom (how much energy do we waste?). With our physics teacher we calculated the total thermal loss of a classroom through windows, angles… We found out that there is a thermal loss of 2012 watts. Our classrooms need a better insulation to avoid such energy losses.

For further information: http://comenius-club.jimdo.com/l-energie/ Other activities in the Comenius project. 1) Art: we made 3 films about our art works covering the 3 topics. http://www.acgrenoble.fr/college/jongkind/ap/articles.php?lng=fr&pg=694&mnu_modecol=W http://www.ac-grenoble.fr/college/jongkind/ap/articles.php?lng=fr&pg=713 You will soon find the 3rd film on the same website. 2) French: we wrote many letters to the Mayor of our town about what could be done to improve sustainable development in our town. We also imagined short stories in French about the first two topics.

3) English: all the PowerPoint presentations were in English. We also wrote the section about the Comenius project in France in English for the final leaflet. We wrote the sentences in English to suggest 2 tips for the final calendar. We studied sustainable development and learnt new vocabulary and grammar structures in English through cartoons, films, texts….etc. We also presented our school in English to our European partners when they stayed in France. 4) Spanish and Italian. We wrote our portraits as there are Italian and Spanish partners. 5) Music: we created music instruments with objects taken from rubbish and we composed a piece of music. At the end of this school year we are going to present our work to the other pupils of our school. 1.2. PART II- THE EXCHANGE IN FRANCE From Saturday October 13th to Monday October 22nd in 2012, we welcomed in France our Swedish, German and Dutch exchange partners. There were 12 Swedish pupils and 3 Swedish teachers, 13 German pupils and 2 German teachers, 14 Dutch pupils and 3 Dutch teachers. With us, the 18 French pupils and the 2 French teachers, we were 57 pupils and 10 teachers during visits. On Monday October 15th, the head teacher Mrs Bouzon-Durand and the deputy head of our school welcomed our partners in the multipurpose room. Then Mr Lloret-Marti presented our region, our town and talked about our school rules. A while later we presented our secondary school in English to our exchange partners in 4 groups. Later we played badminton in our gymnasium. We ate at the school canteen at 12.15 p.m. In the afternoon, we visited la Côte Saint André (our town) with a guide and we visited the museum Hector Berlioz with Mr Lloret- Marti and audioguides. At 5 p.m we went to the Town hall where the mayor of the town welcomed us and showed us a PowerPoint presentation of La Côte St André. The local Member of Parliament and the Mayor made 2 speeches. Finally we had a snack and a drink before going back home.

On Tuesday October the 16th, in the morning we went to Lyon and we visited the Confluence district, the biggest eco-district in France. We rode bikes around the Confluence district and a guide (Mr Marchand’s sister) explained to us the sustainable development objectives of the entrepreneurs and architects (solar panels, passive houses….). We saw a documentary film about the confluence district and a miniature scale model of the district with Mr Lloret-Marti, who explained to us the evolution of the district, from past to future. Then we had a treasure hunt around the centre of the district. Most foreign pupils went to eat at a Mac Donald restaurant while the teachers and the French pupils ate an organic picnic near a marina. In the afternoon we went to visit the old Renaissance district of Lyon with guides. We could do some shopping for 45 minutes. Then we went back home at 6 p.m.

On Wednesday October the 17th, we visited our local water treatment plant and our local waste-sorting unit. Mr Marchand was in charge of the visits. It was very interesting to see how our water is treated and how our wastes are processed. At noon we had a picnic at our school. In the afternoon, we presented our presentations about recycling to our partners and they did the same thing. It was very interesting to see different aspects of the problem. At 4 p.m most teachers stayed at school to work on the Comenius project and all the pupils went to the Aquatic facility for a swim. At 7 p.m all the teachers had dinner with the headmistress.

On Thursday October the 18th, we went to visit an eco-centre “Terre Vivante” in the beautiful region of Trièves. We had to go through 2 workshops. In the first workshop, we learned how to prepare a garden before the winter and how to cultivate an organic garden: we dug the ground, learnt the soil properties… but we left with flowers and vegetables as a reward. In the second workshop, we learnt building techniques for eco-constructions, how to insulate houses with all types of natural materials. We had lunch at the centre. In the afternoon we went to Grenoble and we took the cable lift up to the top of the mountain looking upon Grenoble. Mr Marchand made comments about Grenoble and its surroundings. Finally we came back home at 6 p.m. On Friday October the 19th, we went to practice tree top climbing in the Chartreuse range of mountains for 2 hours. It was awesome! Then we went to a restaurant where typical local food was served (some duck, gratin Dauphinois, a blueberry cake…). In the afternoon we went to visit the museum of the Grande Chartreuse Monastery. It was boring. We then went to hike a bit up to the Chartreuse Monastery where we took photos of the whole group. Later we went back home by bus. At 7.30 p.m we all came back to our school for a farewell dinner. We ate a lot of

good French food. Then our music teacher Mr Rey played the accordion and a singer sang many famous French songs (Amsterdam, Göttingen, La vie en rose…). Finally the French pupils left with their partners because they had organised a private party in a village.

1.3. PART III- A GREEN FUTURE? IMAGINE YOUR LIFE IN 2030.

Group n°1. Jérémie Paujet, Sacha Brieu-Malik and Guillaume Albertin. In 2030, only wind turbines and hydro-electrical dams will produce energy. There will just be electrical cars because the stock of oil will run out. In the future, nature will be polluted. Guillaume's job in the future: I will be a carpenter in the army. Sacha's job in the future: I will be an engineer. Jeremie's job in the future: I will be a computer graphics designer. Group n°2. Céline Roustan, Emilie Prudhomme and Anaïs Douillet. In 2030 there will be fewer nuclear power stations and they will be replaced with wind turbines, solar power stations and hydro-electrical dams. The supplies of nonrenewable energies like oil and gas will become scarce. Pollution will begin to decrease step by step and there will be fewer greenhouse effect gases thanks to the reduction of CO2 emissions. We will drive electrical cars because they will become more common in the world. We hope, the earth won’t be as polluted as it is today. The Amazonian forest will disappear because of the clearing of forests and the ice will disappear (the ice cap melting). Many endangered animal species will disappear before 2030. The fumes of industries and factories will increase the global warming up. Organic food will be more grown in our countries but there will still be importations of many goods and food from anywhere else. The more cities will get big, the more they will be polluted. Céline Roustan - In 2030, I think I will live in a city even if there will be a lot of pollution in big cities. I won’t have any children but I will have loads of snakes because they are splendid and fascinating! I will have a Chevrolet Camaro because I will earn a lot of money and I love beautiful and luxury cars. I hope I will live for a very long time. Emilie Prudhomme: In 2030, I think I will live on an island in a big house, because I hate cities except for shopping. I will earn a lot of money because I will sell pedigree cats, they are so cute! Maybe I will be married and maybe I will have one son or one daughter. I hope I will have loads of cats. Anaïs Douillet: In 2030, I think I will live on an island. I will have a big house. I will have a lot of money and I will have a Chevrolet Camaro and a Ferrari car. I will be married and I will have a son and a daughter. I will be a firewoman and a nurse. I will have loads of dogs.

Group n°3. Manon Jourdan and Candice Jacquemet In 2030, there will be flying cars, we will use magnetic energy and there will be biogas buses. There will be more public transportation to get less pollution. There will be masks to breathe because the air will be polluted. We don't save enough energy today, so the earth will get hotter. Global warming will accelerate the ice cap melting and it will bring about the rising of water levels. Houses in towns will float on water because the extra water will make the sea level rise. In towns or cities, buildings will be linked with tunnels. There will be scarce vegetation, flora and fauna because lands will be polluted. Vegetables will be grown in disinfected greenhouses. There will be fewer cows to get less methane in the atmosphere and meat will be expensive. Life expectancy will be higher than 100 nonetheless. Manon and Candice: In 2030, we will be doctors, we will be married and we will have 2 children. We will have a big house on the water and we will have a robot at home. Group n°4. This is the text written by Mathilde Champier, Augustin Robert and Solène Lequay about our future in 2030. In 2030, there will be flying cars because there won't be any oil left. There will be water- powered cars, electrical cars and vegetable oil-powered cars. There will be a war for oil because it will be a world with little oil left. People will eat organic food, there won't be any more drinking water and we will use masks to breathe. Africa will be deserted because there won't be any drinking water and food. There won't be certain species of animals. There will be the ice cap melting. There will just be buildings in the streets and the ozone layer will disappear... Solene: In 2030, I'll be a rich lawyer, I will have 4 children and I will be married. I will eat organic food and I will help penniless children. Augustin: In 2030, I'll be a rich actor. I will help charities. I will be married. I'll have two or three children. I'll live in the countryside. I'll eat organic food. Mathilde: In 2030, I will live in the countryside in Switzerland. Our houses will be built on water because the Earth will be submerged. There won't be any drinking water and I'll eat organic food. Nature will disappear Group n°5. Nejma Ben Salem & Célia De Alméida. In 2030, for our part, more people will make an effort to take care of the planet. We will save energy and water, develop renewable energies (solar energy, water energy, wind energy, thermic energy, biofuel energy . . .). But it will not be enough and greenhouse effect gases will rise and we will not be able to breathe polluted air and there will be more illnesses. The global warming will

increase the global earth temperature (2°C/century), it will accelerate the ice cap melting, drinking water and fossil fuels will become scarce resources. Towns will be very polluted. There will be flying cars and a better public transportation, more bikes . . . In the country, there will be less vegetation and fewer cows. On the top of houses and buildings, there will be gardens on the roof. The vegetables grown in greenhouses will not be organic. In 2030, we will have a 80-year-life expectancy. We will have a house with a garden. Célia will be an architect and we will have 2 children. And we will take care of the planet!

Group n°6. Elodie Favre and Thibault Batifol In 2030, there will be electrical buses and we will develop wind energy and hydroelectricity, and we think nuclear energy will disappear. We will not develop solar water- heating panels because their production and is too difficult and we don't know what we can do with the old solar panels. In 2030, we will develop wind turbines to produce electricity and we will maybe install solar panels on buildings and houses. We will use bikes in cities and in the countryside, or we will use electrical buses or cars! In 2030, we will eat good food, lots of vegetables and fruit. We will eat local food and we will eat less meat. Many plants won't exist any more because the soil will be polluted with chemical substances. In the cities, there will be more plants like trees, bushes, plants... Many species will disappear or will be endangered because of pollution and the environment changes. Thibault: In 2030, I think I will be an engineer. Maybe I will not be rich and I think I will live in a city like Paris. I think, I will be not married and I will have no children but I'm not sure of that. Elodie: In 2030 I will be a vet in my own practice. I will be a famous vet because I will take care of many wild animals in Africa (in Kenya). I will live in the Camargue Region in the South of France. I will have many pets. I will have a boyfriend. I will have my own garden and will have a stable with many horses. I will gallop with one of my horses on the beach every day in the morning.

Group n°7: Maxime Tournier, Eddy Turrel and Nathan Rouzaud. TRANSPORTATION: There will be flying cars. People will fly by jets. We will use public transportation. FOOD: Food won't be polluted because the air won't be polluted so we will have fewer chances to get cancer.

ENERGY: We will only use renewable energies: there will be no pollution. We will run short of fossil fuels. PLANET: If we use too much paper, forests will disappear. The ice cap will disappear too because the climate will be very hot. HABITAT: The ice cap will disappear, so houses will float with polystyrene. WATER: The ice cap will melt because the climate will be very hot. Water will be polluted. NATURE: Forests and plants will disappear, so insects will disappear too. Maxime: I will become rich. I will have 2 children. I will live in Paris, in a luxurious hotel in the Eiffel Tower. I will be an environmentalist.

CHRISTOPH-PROBST-GYMNASIUM GILCHING AND THE COMENIUS PROJECT

The name of our school comes from a brave man who fought against the Hitler-Regime in the organisation “Weiße Rose”. He was executed at the age of 23 years and he left 3 young children. Our principal´s name is Peter Meyer. His subjects are Latin and Religion, but he doesn´t teach at the moment. We have 1520 pupils and 115 teachers. There are different offers at our school. In the 6th grade you can choose between Latin or French and in the 8th grade between languages or science. You can participate in exchanges to England, France, Spain, Poland and Costa Rica.

OUR CLASS We are 29 pupils in the 9a. We were the only class chosen to take part at the Comenius-Project in our school. We are a French and science class. Our class representatives are Florian Schwald and Lucas Mischnik. Some of us went to Italy in winter 2011, to France in autumn 2012 and to Spain in spring 2013. In Italy we didn´t visit the places we actually wanted to visit because it snowed. That´s why we ate every day pizza and visited the mayor and leisure centre. In France we visited a water purification and a recycling plant, we worked in a garden and we visited Lyon and Grenoble. In Spain we went to Cartagena to go shopping and did a boat tour, we hiked up a mountain, we did beach activities. At last we visited the mine. By pupils from class 9a

COMENIUS WEEK IN GILCHING Monday, 04.03.2013, DLR School Lab We arrived with our guests at the DLR School Lab and split up into two groups. One group experimented with light, wind and water and the other group listened to presentations from the members of the DLR School Lab and other experts about their plans. We also had a guided tour and saw HALO, an experimental plane, and robots. Back at school we had a snack and did some group activities. Tuesday, 05.03.2013, castle “Neuschwanstein” and the water power plant On Tuesday we went to the power plant at the Walchensee. The German pupils explained how the power plant works and why it produces sustainable energy. I think the presentation was quite interesting because you could see the power plant and the big generators. After the visiting tour we went to the castle “Neuschwanstein” and had a guided tour. The guide gave us some interesting information about the history of the castle. Wednesday, 06.03.2013, Andechs Our guests went to Andechs and had a guided tour through the church. Afterwards they had a “Brotzeit” in a typical Bavarian “Biergarten”. Thursday, 07.03.2013, Gilching and the major We went to the city hall and spoke with the 2nd mayor of Gilching Herr Schlammerl. He told us a lot about the region and gave us the most important information. Gilching is a growing community with a lot of young children, teenagers and adults, it has got 3 SBahn stations and is near Munich and its international airport. The infrastructure is very good and there are a lot of sport activities to do during the weekend. The water in the ground has got a very good quality. There are plans to build windmills but a lot of inhabitants are against these plans. This is the reason why they haven´t been constructed yet. In the afternoon we went to the German Museum. Friday, 08.03.2013, BMW Our guests visited the factory of BMW in Munich and were able to see how the cars are produced as sustainable as possible. Weekends During the weekends the guests stayed with their families who organized excursions with them, e.g. to the Olympiapark or the Partnachklamm. Our exchange partners and us: There are some positive experiences for example: -Improve English language -Overcome prejudices -It was a great time with a lot of experiences

Future life in 2030

14th of March 2030 As always I woke up at 5 o`clock in the morning to get ready for the OS, the online school. I dressed, brushed my hair and cleaned my teeth. An hour later I was sitting in front of my I-21, a second later I said clearly into the microphone: “ Number: 4013, Name: Emma McKelvie, Grade: 9th, Teacher: Mr Hamilton.” A few windows appeared: a big one with my Latin teacher Mr Hamilton and ten others with my Latin class mates. We continued where we ended last week and three hours later we had the first break. I stood up and went down the stairs. Mum and Dad were already at work. My Mum works at the European Association for the Conversation of Energy, which aims to avoid the waste of energy and supports the environment. She always talks about how the world used to be when she was a kid. She says that we became very spoilt and we waste too much energy for things we could do ourselves. She is a little complicated. My Dad doesn´t care much about our use of energy. In fact he works as an engineer in a company, which steadily produces new technologies. I pressed the button on the automatic electronic sandwich machine. Two minutes later my chosen sandwich was ready. A robot voice said: “Enjoy your meal”. After I finished eating I watched TV and went up into my room again. The walls have jungle wallpaper. I remember that I put it on yesterday, before I went to bed. I went to the operator panel next to my bed and switched it on sunset. This wallpaper I got my last birthday, I really love it. Grinning I sat again at my desk. I still had 10 minutes. Lost in thought I looked at my notes´ display and noticed that it was Kate´s birthday today. Kate was my best friend. We met every Saturday to go to the 5D cinema. I hadn´t got a present yet. I surfed the Internet and soon ordered an automatic reader, which just scans the book and then loads it and reads the whole book out aloud. Five minutes later it appeared in our family post box in the living room. Then I had another three hours of Latin – very, very boring. Afterwards I had sports with the sports trainer-device we had to buy at the beginning of the fifth grade. It showed the exercises we had to do and through the camera it corrected me. An hour later I dropped the parcel with the automatic reader with birthday greetings to Kate into our home post office hatch and continued surfing the Internet. Quite a bit later my Mum came back. “Hey, Em. How was OS? Are you surfing again? Don´t you think it´s enough electronics for today?” Typical Mum! I really don´t see her problem. By Yara Fanger

Our life in 2030

Diary / Mike Miller / Nasa / Project: Curiosity It´s pretty cold outside. About -15 degrees. Today I went to the office 2 hours later. I was too tired to keep my eyes open. It´s the 2nd of December 2030. It´s 9 o´clock in the morning and I´m Mike Miller. Im usually working in Florida but since last Friday I´m in Chicago. I work for the national aeronautics and space administration. I´m a member of a group called Team5. Our job is to keep an eye on abnormal activities in the universe. Yesterday we saw something we didn´t expect to see. We found a huge lake in a kind of a small valley next to our base on the red planet. The lake was huge and the liquid looked like water. When we told Curiosity to roll down the hill we saw a cave in front of the lake. When we turned the lights on we saw something moving. We were a kind of surprised and scared at the same time.We activated the procedure for abnormal contacts in the space. Curiosity stopped immediately and started the light sequences. Nothing happened. We started to roll in the cave. Suddenly the camera was switched off. Now I´m sitting in front of the TV. “Breaking News: Base on the red planet destroyed. Technical fault. “ I can´t believe it. Something is out there but we don´t know what it is. The military is in disposition. I think this event will change our life. Tomorrow I will pick up my daughter with my electric car. Since BMW is on the rocks I decided to buy an electric car like almost everybody. After that we will go to one of these huge new platforms which were built to keep a bit of a green environment in Chicago. I will probably think about the red planet. I will probably think about what is gonna happen if they arrive. I will probably tell the world about the danger. I will probably have lunch now.

My Life in 2030 7 am. "Jesus...", I grumbled as I tried getting my head around the fact I was probably about to hear the worst joke of my life. "Hey master!", a terribly high-pitched electronic voice screeched from my bedside table. "Here's your coffee! Wanna hear a joke?" By then I knew this dialogue by heart. Every morning it's the same. The only difference: The jokes get worse. And worse. After a year of it I thought he hit rock bottom with: "What did the beaver say, when he swam against a wall? Damn!". But nope. It just gets worse and worse. I tried saying no once, and now I still have a visible burn on my chest and coffee stains on my bed sheets. Let's just leave it at this: It was a bad idea. Anyway: back to my story: "Go ahead..." I sighed, accepting the cup he was holding a mere inch in front of my face. "Knock knock!" Oh hell no! These are always the worst... "Who's there?" "Doris!" "Doris who?" "Doris locked so I'm knocking!" "HAHAHAHAHAHA!" A voice boomed from the kitchen. "SHUT UP FRIDGE! YOU'RE SHAKING THE COLA AGAIN!" This happens every morning. No matter how often I yell at him, he just can't help it. Bloody fridge. If I ever get my hands on the guy who had the idea of allowing machines to have personalities, I will stick him in a barrel and roll him down Mount Everest. No, I have a better Idea: I'll lock him in a room with my coffee machine. I'm trailing off again, aren't I? Well anyways: Next stop: My bathroom. Looked in the mirror. Thank god for the invention of the Insta-Shower™. 1 spray and I'm done. Now for the most important part: My beard. I whipped out my beard comb and started brushing. Why do I have a beard comb you may ask? Because I can. And by the way, it's made of mahogany. Yes. Mahogany. The rarest material on earth since they chopped down the rainforests and replaced them with oxygen factories because they were 'more efficient'. Damn Americans, have no respect for their natural surroundings. I still don't get it how the Americans could be so stupid as to elect another, third, Bush. Twits. What? You want me to get back to my story? Oh sorry. Well anyway, after I had finished combing my perfect beard, I went downstairs to get breakfast and get in my Mini. It's 2030, what the hell am I doing in a Mini you might ask. Well screw you, Minis are awesome. And with these new CO2 powered motors I can go over 300 km/h. "Turn Left." "Turn Right." "Turn Left." Left. Right. Left. Straight ahead. "You have arrived". At least my car isn't an AI or I would probably have driven it straight off a cliff. I get out, walk the last few meters and walk through the door. "Hi boss!" a crowd of at least 30 people shouted as I stepped into the lobby. "Good morning!" I replied. After about 1 minute of walking I arrived at my office, slumped in my chair and fell into a deep sleep, only to wake up at 6 o'clock and go back home to play video games until 4 am. What? You expected something interesting to happen in this story? Nope. By Matthew Hewitt

3.1 Wellantcollege VMBO Madestein The Hague, The Netherlands.

Wellantcollege VMBO Madestein is part of Wellantcollege, an educational institute with 27 sections. Around 400 students with a special interest in plants and animals visit our school daily. Our students are in the age of 12-16 years. We prepare them for a vocational education. The school is situated in a large area with gardens and a lot of trees, unique in the crowded Netherlands. Beside a greenhouse and a large garden with a lots of trees, students work with many different kinds of animals, such as mice, fishes, birds, goats and horses. The students take care of all these animals. There is also a fully equipped professional kitchen in which students learn to prepare food. Students also have the opportunity to gain experience working in glasshouses and in the garden around the school.

Our students learn to work together during projects in which different subjects are clustered. Children can be members of classes with special interests, such as horses, cooking, sports and technics. We offer our pupils special sport events like surfing, wall climbing, fitness, ice skating and more. Technicians can practise their skills in our workshop with mini motorbikes and welding equipment. We have a clear educational concept. It binds and inspire students and teachers. Due to the balanced relationship between students and teachers, there is a good learning atmosphere in the school. We offer our students three levels of learning and for those with special needs we have classes with a smaller number of students in which pupils receive more attention from the teacher.

building is situated next to the Maeslant storm barrier which consists out of 2 huge movable steal doors ready to close the mouth of the river Rijn in case of a storm in combination with a high tide. The Maeslant barrier is the last part of the Dutch Delta Works. The guides of the exposition offered the students an interactive program about the impact the sea would have on our country when we shouldn’t have worked on water management with de Delta Works. Finally the student got the opportunity to see the barrier and the working principal was explained.

For more information you can visit the website http://www.keringhuis.nl On this website you can see movies about the Delta Works and the Zandmotor (sand motor). The Zandmotor is a project close to the beach of The Hague, it is an artificial peninsula made out of sand which helps to enforce the coastline. It’s a unique project because the sea current is doing the construction job instead of men power. Besides the technical part of the Sand Motor the peninsula attracts a lot of seabirds and even seals.

Excursion to Earthship On April the 8th of 2013 we visited Earthship in Zwolle, 40 students from the 3th grade of Wellantcollege VMBO Madestein

Holland.

An earthship is a house made of natural and recycled materials. There are several houses build this way all over the world. Earthships houses utilize the available local resources, especially energy from the sun. For example, windows on sun-facing walls let sunlight enter the room for heating and solar panels are on the roof to generate electricity. The thick walls of the house regulates in a natural way the interior temperature during both cold and hot seasons. In summertime the windows can be covered with shutters to prevent overheating. Ventilation holes in de roof of the house causes an automatic flow of fresh air. The back of this houses are covered with a thick layer of earth which helps saving energy and prevent the house for heating up too much in the summer and to not cool down to much in winter. The earthship house in Zwolle is build in 2009. It’s made out of natural materials and in the walls you see a lot of reused bottles. As a decoration they made mosaic on the walls out of reused paving stones. On the roof of the earthship you see the square

shaped ventilation system which they use for regulating the temperature in summertime. On the roof you find solar panels for generating electricity. When you walk to the back of the house you will see an earth dike with grass on it. On the back you wouldn’t guess that there is a house underneath. In Olst, a small village in the Netherlands, they started in 2011 with the building of 23 earthship houses. 3 of them will be for rent and 20 for sail. They will finish the construction in 2013. 3.2 My life in 2030.

– By Yassin 3E.

Waste In 2030 garbage won’t be such a big problem as it is now. In third world countries we will recycle all the garbage for useful stuff so that everyone will become a little bit richer. We will make chairs and tables maybe even music instruments and a lot of other stuff of their garbage. We will recycle a big part of our garbage too. We are going to find a way to transform our garbage to energy, because you’ll never know what we will be capable of in 2030. Another option is art. Art will develop and we might use a lot of garbage to make art. Garbage won’t be thrown in water or nature. People will notice in time how much damage it actually does to nature. We act like we have more worlds in live in. We need to be more carefully with our world.

Energy Energy is something we really need. But you cannot use the same energy more than once. In 2030 we will find more new resources from which we can get energy from we won’t run out like solar energy. Like I said before we will find another use for garbage, we can turn it into energy.

We need renewable resources for our energy. There are a lot of resources but almost all of the sources damage nature or we will run out of them quickly. The only source that I can think of that doesn’t damage nature is the sun. But the problem is that the sun doesn’t shine 24 hours and not every day and here in the Netherlands we don’t have a very bright shining sun. So we need to think in other renewable resources.

Water Water is something that keeps us alive. But we have a lot of ‘useless’ sea water. In 2030 Cars will be driving on salt water, computers will be running on salt water and a lot of more things that need energy will run on it. But we could be running out of salty water too so in that time and we’ll need another energy source.

3.3 The meeting in Holland

In the week of May the 13th 2012 students and teachers from our foreign partner schools visited Wellantcollege VMBO Madestein in The Hague. This meeting was dedicated to the themes waste and sustainable development in our local environment. Several families of our students but also some teachers were willing to host student while others stayed in cottages at "Kijkduinpark" with Dutch, Spanish and French teachers. We welcomed 5 students from College Jongkind from France, 13 students from IES Sierra Minera from Spain and 12 students of IISS Bachelet Galilei from Italy and a total of 10 foreign teachers at our school in The Hague. During this week, along with 17 of our students and three of our teachers we followed an intensive program of the Comenius project "Are we green".

Sunday, May 13 Between 15:00 and 20:00 we expected the arrival of all groups in Holland. We used our 3 school busses to pick up our guests from the train station of The Hague. The Italian group arrived at school by bus which they took from Brussel Charleroi airport. In the evening the student ate with the host friend families, teacher and student were welcomed with a diner at "Kijkduinpark" made by one of our teachers. Monday, May 14 At 8:30 all the guest students and teacher arrived at our school and they were welcomed with a debriefing about the program of that day. After the group was divided in two, students went out canoeing to collect waste in the surrounding of the school, the other half of the group learned to reuse waste by making furniture out of used wood. For lunch the group went to the harbour of Scheveningen where they could eat Kibbeling, that's a Dutch dish with codfish and french fries. In the afternoon student where offered surf lessons on the beach of Scheveningen. For those who couldn't swim or didn't want to participate there where kites, a possibility to play beach

volleyball or they could just hangout on the beach. In the evening there was a diner cooked by the Dutch teachers on the school. The principal of our school was present to welcome the foreign students and their teachers. Tuesday, May 15 Al students were expected to be at school at 08.00 for an excursion to the Flower Auction "Flora Holland" in Naaldwijk. The students learned about this worlds unique auction by solving a puzzle which rout lead them across the most important sites of this impressive flower auction. As we did in all the activities we divided the group in smaller groups in which students from all the participating countries where present. This way we gained that student where more motivated to speak English and it was a good way to get to know each other. At 11.00 we arrived at an old lighthouse in Hoek van Holland for hiking in the dunes and Kor fishing. Kor fishing is a method of fishing which consist out of dragging a fishing net through the sea. Due to a special construction and a very long rope you can drag the net from the beach. Eventually we didn't catch so much, possibly caused by the high tide. Later on we had lunch in a restaurant along the Waterweg. De Waterweg is the waterway where ships enters Europe's largest harbour Rotterdam, it's also the mouth of the river Rijn that empties here into the North Sea. In the afternoon we visited Metazet in Wateringen. This company is a demo nursery situated in the horticultural area know by the name "het Westland". During this excursion students were showed different sustainable technical solutions for the professional cultivation of flowers and vegetables, like the use of led lights, the smart designed packaging to enable reuse and saving transportation cost, sustainable purification technology for cleaning water and they showed us a greenhouse in which student could see how we grow our vegetables and flowers in Holland. For more information about Metazet you can visit the website http://metazet.com Wednesday, May 16 At 8.30 everybody was expected at school to participate in our practical workshops. In a carousel student followed all of the workshops as there were Flower arranging, Cooking class and Taking care of animals. This morning all our Dutch students who didn't participate in the program had the opportunity to meet our foreign guests. For the teachers it was a nice way getting to know our school system and the Dutch colleagues. Working together was the goal of the cooking workshop which results in a lunch for all of us prepared by the students themselves. In the afternoon we had organized a city walk in the centre of The Hague with a questionnaire. During this 2 hour during tour students not only got to know our city but they were also pointed out and questioned about sustainable development in our city. In the evening all participants were invited by Wellantcollege to have diner in a restaurant in the city centre of The Hague. Thursday, May 17 Another early day, because this day we were headed for the province of Groningen located in the north of the Netherlands. In Pieterburen we were welcomed with coffee and apple pie. After the coffee break, 4 guides took us for a spectacular walking tour in the Unesco resort called the Wadden. This resort consists out of the Wadden Sea that is situated between the north of Holland and the Dutch Wadden islands. The guides talked us about the area, the history and the rich sea life. Before we went for Dutch pancakes we visited a care centre for seals in Pieterburen. Student where pointed at

the influence of waste on the seals population end the effects of pollution on the sea life ecosystem. Friday, May 18 Because the other evening we returned late from our trip to Groningen, we expected the students to be at school at 10:00. This morning students were asked to wright for us a small resume of their experience they had during this week. Later that morning student from the different countries got the opportunity to show their results of the project Are we Green. At the same time coordinators of Are we Green had a reunion about the progress of the project. In the afternoon we went, as a final activity, to amusement park Duinrell. In the evening there was a goodbye party at school with a barbeque for everybody. Please take a look at our pictures we took in Holland during the visit of our foreign partner schools on www.arewegreen.eu Are we Green is a project that aims at sustainable development in our local environment. The themes water, waste, energy and related jobs are the storyline for this project so it was also for the program of this meeting in Holland. In addition to the themes mentioned, students not only learned about culture but also how to respect cultural differences. This week gaves students the opportunity to work on building their own international relations. To complete all our goals we visited the Demo nursery Metazet in Wateringen where students were informed about the latest sustainable technology in the horticultural sector in terms of use of materials and space, the developments in lightning and the consumption of energy. At our school teachers of VMBO Madestein offered workshops where our guests got familiar with our practical school subjects as Cooking, Flower arranging and Animal care. Besides visiting our school we organized activities with emphasis on ECO tourism as there were surfing lessons and Kor fishing. The climax of this week was hiking on the Wadden near Pieterburen, a unique area which since 2009 is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage, this we put in combination with a visit to the seal nursery in Pieterburen where the students were confronted with the immediate effects of waste on the seal population and the sea life ecosystem. Behalves of Wellantcollege VMBO Madestein, we would like to thank all the students and their teachers who participated and contributed to the realization of the project Are we Green, thanks to their efforts this project has been a great success.

IISS “Bachelet-Galilei”

IISS “Bachelet-Galilei” is made up of two schools: one is a technical school attending economic, administrative, mechatronics and touristic studies (n. 600 students, n. 106 teacher, n. 51 students with disability, n. 21 migrants); the other is a professional school attending mechanic, electronic and fashion system studies (n. 340 students, n. 55 teachers, n. 25 students with disability, n. 7 migrants). Our school is situated in Gravina, a city of 45,000 inhabitants, in the South of Italy, about 60 Km from Bari. Our economy is mainly based on the agricultural activities, there are also some factories and farms. In our city there is a high rate of unemployment and the majority of our students come from low-middle class families. A lot of our students live in difficult situations and they need a special attention. Pupils attending the 1st and 2nd year in our school are involved in the Comenius Project centred on the sustainability of the environment. All the activities carried out by our students under the leadership of English, Science, Italian, German and French teachers have had excellent results. The aims of the project were to make our young pupils more aware about the environment and to strengthen their active European citizenship. During these two years our students have been working on different topics such as water, waste and energy. The first meeting took place in our school, where we hosted Dutch and German pupils. During their stay, we showed them our exhibition about water and its importance for all the planet. Students wrote poems inspired to water, proverbs about water, a logo and a slogan, they organized a treasure hunt to discover our town as well as they drew up a series of rules about how to save water. In our school another group of students displayed objects made of recycled tools, such as disposable plates, glasses and bottles. Furthermore all these tasks works were illustrated in a “newspaper” printed by our school and delivered to our Dutch and German friends. Our meeting in the Hague saw our pupils involved in other activities focused on waste. They invented a comic about rubbish; they put together photos about waste in our school in order to improve our students’ behavior. For the meeting in Germany, after a survey on energy, our students put together a quiz and some power points on the different forms of alternative energy and their positive influence on men’s life in a near future. For our last meeting in Spain, we are creating the illustrations for the calendar and in particular the months of November and December. Our students are also making drawings and texts on the topic “Green future: Imagine your life in 2030”. All these activities have been uploaded on the Comenius website “Are we Green?”

IES SIERRA MINERA (LA UNIÓN) 5.1 OUR SCHOOL AND THE COMENIUS PROJECT ´Sierra Minera´ Secondary School is located in the outer parts of the city centre of La Unión, in Murcia. It is near the sea. La Unión has about 18.000 inhabitants, most of whom live on building, hotel and restaurant business, shops and other services related to tourism. Most pupils come by bus from different surrounding villages. There are pupils with specific educational needs as well as ethnic minorities. The school has 500 pupils and 58 teachers. Murcia is a region with lack of water and nowadays the main economic activities are agriculture and tourism, although until 1990 the most important activity in La Unión was the mining industry. Our city has an old flamenco and mining tradition and The International Flamenco Festival “Cante de las minas” is celebrated annually. In the vicinity of la Unión you can find nature protection areas as Calblanque Natural Park, There are places of great touristic interest such as La Manga del Mar Menor or Portman Bay, where the pilot project has been started for the recovery of the polluted bay. Another interesting place near La Unión is Cartagena and its Roman remains. We are trying to make Teachers, pupils and their families become aware of the importance of a sustainable development of our environment in favour of future generations. This is the main reason why we participate as coordinator in the Multilateral Association Comenius “Sustainable Development at a Local Scale: Are We Green?”. More than thirty pupils and roughly ten teachers have been working on the project doing activities about energy, recycling and water. We have been travelling to Holland, Sweden and Germany to share all these activities with our partners.

Weekend During the weekends the guests stayed with their families who organized activities and excursions with them. We live near the coast so most of them went to the beach or went to visit the biggest city in the region, Murcia.

5.3 Future life in 2030 Ana Belén Rubí Sánchez In 30 years Spain is going to be more ecologic than now. I think there will be cars that won't need oil to work: electric cars. People will care about nature and they won't throw rubbish away in the street. People will save water and electricity because it will be more expensive than now. If we start saving water and electricity now, it will be easier to save it in the future. We will use sun's energy for more things, for example: to warm water, to turn on electrical devices... Because of sun is an renewable energy, we will be allowed to use the sun always. And the most important thing, we don't have to worry because the sun will never turn off. Adriana Jerez In my opinion, if we continue as now, Spain will be even less green, but if we realize that we have to save energy and water and take care of nature, things will change and we will be happy in a better and more ecological place. I think these will be some of the changes : -Electrical devices will spend less energy. -People will have electric cars. -We will use public transport more than now. -People will have a bin for paper, for glass... at home.

-People will reuse and recycle. -People won´t throw rubbish on the floor. -We won´t cut down trees to make paper. -There won´t be too many floods, droughts, earthquakes, etc and if something bad happens, we will be ready because we will have safety measures. And of course, we won´t hear the word ''Global Warming'' again. Laura Hernández Pérez I think that in thirty years time, Spain will be a totally green country. However, to achieve this we have to be involved with the environment and do things to cut up with pollution. For example: If we save water and energy , tomorrow there will be more resources. If we do reforestations, tomorrow there will be thousands of new trees. If we recycle and reuse, tomorrow we will have more materials to use, And if we do all these things today, tomorrow will be better. But we have to join forces and try to extinguish pollution to get in thirty years time a totally green planet! I think that we will achieve it. María del Carmen Martínez Caro On the one hand there are people who think that if we are irresponsible with saving energy and we aren't respectful with nature in the world, the world there be contamination, and people will disappear in the future. On the other hand, there are people that think that if they know the problems, they will do their best and they will find solutions. In my opinion, if we study these problems we will find progress for subsiding contamination. For example if we change the electric cars to the cars using fuel, we would contaminate less. I think that we will active it, if we change no renewable energy to renewable energy. Ana Belén Rubí Sánchez In 30 years Spain is going to be more ecologic than now. 6.1 Ekholmsskolan, Linköping

…in Linköping, Sweden is a school hosting about 300 students, 13 to 16 years old. Two classes have been working in the project. The students have been working with investigations about the three main project matters, energy, water and recycling and also with environment policies at some companies. The results has mostly been presented in Power Point presentations and as films. In februari 2012 we hosted French and Spanish students and we showed them our town and it’s history and we also visited our world famous Swedish Air Force Museum. We also visited an energy plant making heat and electricity from burning garbage. Another visit was to a big recycling plant serving the whole city of Linköping with it’s 140 000 inhibitors.

In October 2012 twelve students, two teachers and our headmaster visited La Côte St André in France. We had a great time there. In march 2013 twelve other students and two other teachers visited Gilching in Gemany and once again we had great times! We are very greatful to the EU, making this project possible. Are we Green? Well, we really try to keep our lives green :-) /Students and teachers at Ekholmsskolan Linköping, Sweden

GREEN FUTURE IN 2030

Green future 2030

In 2030 we will have a green future. Our cars won´t go on fossil fuels. Instead they will go on clean electricity made by air, water and sun energy. The biggest cities on earth will be computerized. The peace will be on the brink off breaking and thereby start a new world war. The UN is trying to stop it but its breaking apart and losing control. Africa, Australia and some of Asia is soon covered by deserts and all the rainforests are soon to be gone. We are in need of food because Earth is overcrowded. The astronomers have gotten a lot of money for the search of a new planet for the human kind to live on because a new result about the sun shows that it will die in a few decades. 2030 are we 33 years old and working to save the human kind from extinction. On the bright side we have made a cure against cancer, diabetes, AIDS and some other diseases. It will be a happy future anyway.
