PHYTOPHTHORA ROOT ROT IN SOYBEAN
Phytophthora root rot (PRR) is a root and stem disease that infects soybean at any stage during plant development The soil-borne pathogen, Phytopthora sojae, remains dormant in the soil for several years and seeks out nearby soybean roots to infect P. sojae thrives in warm, wet soils and can increase in high frequency soybean crop rotations It’s important to utilize an integrated management approach to minimize disease buildup including crop rotation, seed treatments and resistant varieties 1

Variety Resistance
Resistant varieties are one of the most relied upon practices to minimize PRR damage in soybean The two main types of plant host resistance are:
• Major-gene/race-specific resistance (Rps gene):
Single-resistance gene to P. sojae that stops plant infection from occurring Each resistance gene protects against specific races and does not provide overall protection from all races Rps1a, Rps1c, Rps1k, Rps3a and Rps6 are the most common resistance genes
• Quantitative resistance/field tolerance: Consists of multiple genes working together to slow the infection within the plant This resistance will provide protection from any P. sojae race that is trying to invade
Varieties with race-specific resistance are molecular screened to identify the major genes, whereas quantitative resistance is evaluated in the field to determine the level of protection provided A combination of both resistance types is recommended to minimize disease symptoms caused by multiple pathotypes of P. sojae 2
Variety Selection
Growers dealing with PRR or at high risk of the disease should select a variety that targets the predominant races detected within the region This information can be found through provincial soybean disease surveys In fields with a history of PRR, select varieties with enhanced resistance genes and strong field tolerance to target P. sojae races identified For fields at a lower risk of PRR, it’s still recommended to use a resistant variety to minimize potential spread and damage from the pathogen Rotating resistance genes over time minimizes selection pressure and increases longevity of resistance sources to help manage PRR

Benefits
• Employing multiple modes of action to control the same weed spectrum is part of a good weed resistance management strategy
Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans are tolerant to both dicamba (Group 4) and glyphosate (Group 9), and are intended to provide soybean growers with the option of applying Roundup WeatherMAX® herbicide (glyphosate) and dicamba for maximum weed control • The residual activity of dicamba may reduce early weed competition and improve late-season control, supporting higher yields and cleaner fields at harvest
