Welcome to y? magazine.

The world is a confusing place. It changes constantly and so does the people, the culture and our perception.

That’s why it’s necessary to keep asking questions.

Sometimes we have to see through others eyes and ask questions that doesn’t provide answers, but perspective.

That’s why we want to start a conversation with you.

The stream of impressions from the culture that surrounds us, are immense and ongoing, and we can’t deny that it takes a great part in shaping who we become. While the world is in constant movement, so is your identity - and the one influences the other. That’s why we want to know how the world looks from exactly your viewpoint, how it makes you feel and what it makes you think. y? magazine’s content is entirely based on true personal stories, interviews and real people. Your stories. Stories interpreted into staged photography, that we hope will broaden your perspective and way of thinking.

This is a visual thinking space, aiming to explore human behaviour and the culture that influences us, and ultimately question why things are the way they are.

In this issue, we are questioning what masculinity is, why it is as it is, how it makes you feel and what you think about it. Femininity is fighting it’s battle to become free and take as many shapes as it wants like never before. But what about men and masculinity?

We’ve discovered through you, that certain stereotypes are still defining what a man is or should be, and that there are structures that limit the many shapes a man can take.

So we simply ask. Why?

I don’t know if there’s that big of a difference between being strong or vulnerable really. Maybe it’s a strength to be vulnerable. If I was sad or felt vulnerable I’d usually keep it to myself.

I figured it was something for me to work out on my own. Maybe didn’t know how to put the words to it. But when you’re trying to figure out your feelings by yourself you kind of walk around in the dark.

I used to think there was one type of man, a classic man. The man who doesn’t cry and who is always strong, but I think in the end, very few people actually relate to that stereotype.

I think the important thing is to not refuse your feelings, but rather explore them and see where they take you. At least I think that’s how I got to know myself better. A lot of people might think that showing and talking about feelings is a weakness, but that isn’t really the case. I don’t think you’re less a man for acknowledging your feelings.

It’s probably only yourself who’s able to create your identity. I mean we’re influenced by everyone around us but in the end it’s up to you to figure out. And I guess that is done mostly through trial and error.

We get told from a very young age what a real man is and how a real man acts. The man is strong.

Brave. Dominating. Feels no pain and shows no emotion. He plays sports, don’t wear dresses and should in no way be feminine. The only feminine thing about him should be the woman on his arm.

If you don’t fit into that box, then, to many - you’re not a man.

Because of this many young men struggle, as they don’t fit into that box. This especially apllies to gay men. Pussyboy, faggot, pansy, fairy, sissy, lady, pillowbiter, fucking homo.

I spent most of my life trying to destroy the real me, doing all I could to ensure he never found expression. A suicide of the soul, identity and meaning. When you finally embrace the gift of your sexual orientation, the intertwining of masculinity and femininity it IS the end; the end of shame, fear and oppression. You leave the unreal world of the closet behind, because suddenly the hidden world can become your reality.

As a result,v many hide their true selves inside of a closet. A closed off world, where none may enter.

The closet is a curious place. You find that there is a magical world inside of you full of color and wonder. You can be however and whoever you want. You can be curious and go exploring. None of the rules from the outside applies. But then you go back to the real world and demands on how you should dress, act, speak and become real again.

You tell yourself: Hide it, kill it, eradicate it, heal it, deliver it, break it, suppress it, deny it, marry it to a woman, heterosexualize it, therapy it, anything and everything, but whatever you do don’t stand up one day and say “I am gay” because that will mean the end.
