We are inviting you to relive the filming of “Big” with a walking tour of the Cliffside Park neighborhood where part of Hollywood history was made as all of the places that you saw in the movie still exist!

If you watched the movie in the past, watching it again would refresh your memory; if you have not, spending an evening with “Big” would bring you the pleasure of a Hollywood fantasy of the late 1980s.

Our tour will start by visiting Greenmount Avenue and observing two houses, in which best friends, Josh and Billy, live just across the driveway from each other, in the western part of our town, near School No. 6. Josh’s home is located at 437 Greenmount Ave. and Billy’s home is located next door, at 435 Greenmount Ave. If you come closer to the houses, you could see that the owners have taken good care of them as both houses still look the same today as they were portrayed on screen more than three decades ago.

In the movie, friends have a simple walkie-talkie system that runs between their bedroom windows, facing each other. It was really fun; it was a big part of their lives. If you look at the secondfloor windows, you could easily see how the boys had communicated with each other and you will notice that the boys’ windows still look very much the same.

Standing on Greenmount Avenue, you would also have the pleasure to see a truly classic American neighborhood with traditional brick homes that are a mainstay of many American towns and movies.

The next stop would be Cliffside Park School #6, which Josh and Billy happily attend every day. The school is located at 440 Oakdene Ave., it’s within walking distance of their homes, and looks the same – 33 years have not changed much here, just the old trees became older.

If you start walking east, in a few minutes you will find yourself on Anderson Avenue – known by locals as The Avenue. Strolling north, in a couple of blocks, you will arrive at ONE PARK VIEW - 2022 Spring Edition

Scotty’s taxi and Garden State Food & Liquor store at 666 Anderson Avenue.

That used to be Garden State News, the place near which Josh and Billy first see Cynthia giggling with her friends at beginning of the movie.

Today the place kept the first part of the name - Garden State - but the second part has been changed.

For those who watched the movie very closely it will be possible to see a police car with the words “Cliffside Park” on it, after Josh disappears and Billy passes by.

At the end of the movie, Susan, who sadly falls in love with the big boy, drops her paramour off at the Southwest corner of Greenmount and Highridge avenues. It was a heartwarming autumn scene with piles of fallen brown and orange leaves covering the sidewalks. We are not in that season right now, so the autumn leaves would be missing, but the street would be the same and you could imagine that melancholy last scene of the movie, right where it was filmed.

That street corner looks very much the same as it did in “Big.”

You could also imagine the scene from the movie when Josh and Bill are together again, hanging out and if you can find the melody “Heart and Soul” that plays at that moment, it would be a nice conclusion to your walking tour of scenes from “Big.” Strolling across Cliffside Park would be a fun, educational, relaxing, and leisurely activity that touches history, while you enjoy the present, and dream about the future. Taking a walking tour of the scenes of “Big” would be a romantic exercise and a nice addition to your collection of visiting unusual localities.

If you live in Borough of Cliffside Park, you could always answer the question: “Where do you live?” by saying “In Cliffside Park, on top of the cliffs, across the Hudson, where the movie “Big” was filmed.”

BALANCING

With its endless views of the Hudson and the NYC Skyline, Unit 1015 is the pinnacle of living at One Park Condos. What is its greatest asset became somewhat of a challenge: How do we capture those views while still making the apartment usable and thinking through how someone would actually live in the space?

I design in layers, whether that is with lighting, pillows, architectural elements, or decorative elements. By doing this, the space feels more luxurious and never gets boring as there are always details to enjoy. We accomplished this in Unit 1015 by layering with wallpaper and artwork. The main “public” space wallpaper was custom created with a small boutique wallpaper studio called Livettes based in Europe. This detail helped to create continuity in such a large space connecting the hallways and Living Area into one space. Further connecting those was our custom 34-foot runner from Bokara in New Jersey. This rug is hand-made to fit the space just so that when you walk in the front door you are drawn into the home and immediately start your journey.

It took me a bit of time, luckily working with DMG was so smooth I was able to spend some time experiencing the home at different times of the day and even working from the space, in each room, to see how the end-user would want to use it.

One of the main requests was how do we get this large living room to feel as expansive as its square footage? When empty, the space feels small because it’s dwarfed with light and the one-of-a-kind Manhattan views, so the volume of space feels engulfed by its surroundings.

The space needed to be defined and balanced. Using a playful yet sophisticated aesthetic with the rug and proportioned furniture, the space transformed. Furnishings with subtle detailing make us as humans (no pun intended) want to touch and experience them and who can forget our Great Dane watching over the apartment ... and the view.

In the home, you will find several different styles of artwork, all chosen and a few even designed by myself specifically for Unit 1015. My favorite is the nine foot wide mural of New York in the Kitchen and Dining areas.

This was one of those walls needed for structural support in the building but located in an inconvenient spot, right where the best view is. I wanted to reiterate that there was a view of NYC just on the other side but I wanted to make sure that you could stop and take a look and laugh as you experience NYC from NJ. This art piece was so large that it didn’t fit in any of the elevators nor up the stairs. Luckily, the gap between the stairs was just wider than the art piece, enabling us to slide it up 10 floors and get it on the wall, such a NY experience for a NY art piece.

WABI-SABI

Let’s Abandon “Perfect” Traditional Japanese aesthetics comprise of wabi-sabi (侘寂): “wabi” means transient and stark beauty, “sabi” means the beauty of natural aging, character, and imperfection.

We consider and appreciate the beauty of imperfection, impermanence and the incomplete.

This is the concept derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence (三法印, sanbōin) — they are: impermanence (無常, mujō), suffering (苦, ku), and the absence of self-nature (空, kū).

Characteristics of wabi-sabi aesthetics and principles include asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature.

One of the characteristics of Japanese culture is often said to be the close

and harmonious relationship between man and nature. Accordingly, our attitude towards nature is described as “man in harmony with nature” or “man in nature,” while our appreciation of nature invokes phrases such as “the Japanese traditional love of nature” or “the great Japanese love of nature and sense of closeness to it.”

ART OF IKEBANA (生花) Do you know the art of Japanese flower arrangements called Ikebana?

Ikebana (生花) means “flower arrangement” in Japanese; the kanji characters translate as making flowers alive, or living flowers. Each flower arrangement should give the viewer an experience with nature that is unexpected, stimulating, and profound.

The Art of Ikebana was introduced to ONE PARK VIEW - 2022 Spring Edition

Japan in the 6th century by Chinese Buddhist missionaries who had formalized the ritual of offering flowers to Buddha. The first school of flower arranging in Japan was in the early 7th century, with one of the oldest schools still practicing for now over 550 years.

Today the art of ikebana is practiced in over 50 countries and by 7000 people throughout the world.

The purpose of making ikebana floral arrangements is not to create decorations. Rather, the purpose is to learn to appreciate certain things that people normally ignore. These “things” tend to be associated with nature and the beauty of the shapes of the flowers.

Compared to most western flower arrangements, the ikebana style uses fewer branches, flowers, and greens. Ikebana emphasizes the space between each flower and branch;

it is very simple but beautiful. The choice of the vase/container is also very important to the art of ikebana flower arrangements. The vases/ containers can be modern or can be antiques, some from many centuries ago, and ultimately will complete the arrangement.

One can say that if western flower arrangements are about adding on flowers and greens, Ikebana is about deducting.

Ikebana is the art of beautifully arranging cut stems, leaves, and flowers in vases and other containers that evolved in Japan over seven centuries. To arrange the stems and flowers exactly as one wishes, familiarity with many different ways of fastening and positioning them is necessary.

NY TIMES WRITES: “Ikebana is deeply associated with the philosophy of the Japanese and our way of life. Thousands of flower schools located throughout Japan teach arrangement styles (both traditional and modern) to students of all ages. The people who produced this floral art (which no other country has equaled) are, above all, a nation of artists. Their sense of ‘fitness’ gives them a unique ability to assimilate native and foreign influences.

Although culture stems from China, Japan today is a country with two

civilizations — East and West — merging as one.

In recent years, Japanese influence has been in modern American decor where the illusion of space and avoidance of symmetry is applied effectively both indoors and in landscaping.

Terms such as ‘shibui’ (the final criterion for the ultimate in beauty), ‘wabi’ (a discriminating taste for simplicity and refinement), and ‘sabi’ (the highest praise for an object patinated by use and time) are becoming familiar in American design.”

The art of ikebana practice is cultivated not just from several classes/lessons or workshops, but from lifelong practice and involvement to achieve and get better.

Kaya Abe Magee is the founder and principal instructor at Momo Global Flowers. Magee has a Master’s degree in the Art of Japanese Flower Arrangement from Ichiyo Style Ikebana School, and is a board member of Ikebana International, NYC Chapter 7.

She continued her studies at the renowned McQueens Flower School in London and has had her work shown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the residence of the Japanese Consul General of New York and the Coco Chanel Haute-couture show in Paris. Give your timeframe a much-needed boost.

Don’t bite off more house than you can chew

In the stock market, the best way to boost your chance of success is to extend your timeframe.

Mortgage rates are pretty low nowadays, and many buyers are taking advantage of that.

Why is this? Well, the U.S. stock market has been up about 55% of the time pretty much every day over the past nine decades. Yet over a 20-year period, it’s never experienced losses.

Some are taking things too far.

Conversely, in the housing market, thinking long-term when purchasing property will increase your chances of a positive outcome. It won’t guarantee success, but holding out for longer is more likely to get you there.

Pair that with the high fees involved in the real estate market—think closing costs, agent commissions, title insurance, and even moving expenses—and you’ll see the benefits of owning your home for more than just a year or two.

Now, there are always extenuating circumstances. I won’t deny that. But at minimum, for the best returns, you should avoid buying a home you wouldn’t be able to live comfortably in for seven to 10 years.

How so? Well, housing costs make up the majority of households’ most significant expense. And while the fixed costs of your monthly mortgage payments are a solid hedge against inflation, they can also wreak havoc on your budget if you buy more house than you’re prepared to pay for.

This is in large part because beyond your mortgage payments, homeowners are also responsible for taxes, insurance, repairs, and upkeep. To increase the value of your home, you may also invest in renovations.

No matter how many iced coffees you go without, you need to make sure you can afford your home. Having a realistic sense of how much house you can and should buy is a critical way to hedge the housing market.

I could tell you to buy credit default swaps on the housing market, or to explore another exotic hedge. You know, the kind we all saw in The Big Short.

But if you’re not a hedge fund manager, this outlook will only lead to heartache. The truth is that you need to consider your decisions on a micro level. Trying to predict the macroeconomy just won’t be effective.

The reason for this is simple. We don’t have control over future recessions. We can’t determine when the housing market will cool off, and we don’t have much say in government spending or interest rate levels.

What we do have is the capacity to manage our own household budgets. We can calculate how much house we can afford, how much debt we can comfortably handle, and how much money we should be saving.

Diversify your assets

This brings me to the best hedge against having the bulk of your wealth tied up in your home: maintaining a long-term financial plan. I’m talking about a plan that accounts for unforeseen risks in the housing market and the economy at large.

Want to know why so many people have the majority of their wealth tied up in their home?

The simple answer is that homeownership represents forced savings. In other words, it’s a way to save money without having to think too much about your budget.

And while owning a home is awesome, the best way to mitigate risk is to also leverage other opportunities.

This is where diversifying your assets comes in.

Whether you turn to a savings account, a 401k, or even an IRA, your financial assets need to be spread across several savings vehicles.

This brings us back to our last point: Make sure you buy a house you can afford.
