Moore Regional is the only hospital in North Carolina to earn this prestigious designation as one of the best hospitals in the United States. Furthermore, it’s the first time in FirstHealth’s history that Moore Regional has earned this distinction for three consecutive years, which also marks the eighth year overall.

The criteria for this award encompassed clinical expertise, financial stewardship, operational efficiency and, most importantly, the quality of our patients’ experiences.

This year, based on comparisons between the study winners and a peer group of similar hospitals that were not winners, the analysis found that the winners of the 100 Top Hospitals® program delivered better outcomes while operating more efficiently and at a lower cost.

Compared to non-winning hospitals, this year’s winners had: • 31% fewer deaths • 9% fewer patients with complications • 39% fewer health care-associated infections (HAIs) • Nearly 20% lower inpatient expenses per discharge • 0.5-day shorter average length of stay • Better reported patient experience scores

Moore Regional is ranked No. 5 in the annual Best Hospitals recognition and also received high-performing ratings for back surgery; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); colon cancer surgery; diabetes; heart attack; heart bypass surgery; heart failure; hip and knee replacement; kidney failure; leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma; maternity care; prostate cancer surgery; and stroke. FirstHealth Hospice

Earns Top Rating FirstHealth Hospice received a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in its 2023 Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Hospice Survey. The survey measured a variety of categories to provide hospice programs a star ranking from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest possible score. Only 11% of all hospices across the United States, and 24% of hospices in North Carolina, received a 5-star rating in the last reporting period.

Among the thousands of nominations from across the state, just 100 nurses who exemplify excellence in the profession are selected. FirstHealth nurses Jason Grooms, BSN, R.N., and Emily Harder, MSN, R.N., TNCC, were recognized for their remarkable achievements as 2023 North Carolina Great 100 Nurses.

TAKES PART IN CLINICAL STUDY DESIGNED TO IMPROVE LUNG CANCER TREATMENT

The care team at the Chest Center of the Carolinas, led by Pinehurst Medical Clinic pulmonologist Michael Pritchett, D.O., recently treated the very first patient in the United States in the AFFINITY clinical study. The trial is designed to demonstrate the safety and technical success of the Aliya™ Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) System in treating patients with certain types of lung cancer. Pritchett called the procedure a “glimpse into the future” of patient care. “It’s exciting to be able to diagnose and treat in a single procedure, but we have the added prospect of creating a systemic response in a patient with metastatic disease, which is a game changer,” he said. “Best of all, the patient went home the same day with a recovery equivalent to a biopsy alone.”

FirstHealth MRH-Hoke Campus opened its doors to patients on October 7, 2013, as the first hospital in Hoke County. The opening was a historic event for a county long acknowledged as one of the largest in the state without its own hospital.

On October 18, 2023, FirstHealth celebrated the 25th anniversary of FirstHealth Dental Care.

On August 13, 2023, FirstHealth of the Carolinas celebrated the 30th anniversary of the region’s first coronary artery stent procedure.

FirstHealth interventional cardiologist Scott Denardo, M.D., performed that procedure, which helped launch FirstHealth’s reputation as a state and national health care leader in cardiovascular services.

Since that opening, the hospital has seen tremendous growth in volumes and recently completed an expansion that included additional emergency rooms and the opening of a second operating room.

Since 1998, FirstHealth Dental Care has provided services to more than 30,000 underserved children in Moore and Montgomery counties.

The dental program for kids and young adults averages almost 1,000 visits a month across four centers and accepts 50 new patients per month.

About 70% of the children seen during the program’s first year of operation had either never seen a dentist at all or hadn’t been to the dentist in more than a year.

Sharon Nicholson Harrell, DDS, MPH, FAGD, FICD, FADI, CDE, was the inaugural director of dental care and still serves in that role.

A SITE TO SEE! On August 16, 2023, FirstHealth of the Carolinas launched its new website. FirstHealth.org has a fresh look and is full of new features to provide easier access to information about FirstHealth.

FirstHealth Now Offers Multi-Cancer Early Detection Blood Test FirstHealth is the first health system in North Carolina to offer the Galleri® MCED test to those at an elevated risk for cancer, including those ages 50 and older, as part of its comprehensive cancer screening and care. The testing initially began with FirstHealth Concierge Medicine and is now being offered at several primary care locations. FirstHealth Occupational Health & Wellness is also offering the test to many of its businesses and local municipalities.

In a clinical study, the Galleri test demonstrated the ability to detect a shared cancer signal across more than 50 types of cancer. When a cancer signal is detected, Galleri can determine the origin of the cancer signal with high accuracy, enabling clinicians to focus their diagnostic evaluation.

The Galleri test is intended to be used in addition to other cancer screening tests, not as a replacement. It requires only a simple blood draw from those patients eligible for the screening.

Southern Pines Woman Is First to ‘Ring the Bell’ in New FirstHealth Cancer Center

“R

inging the bell” is a picture-taking, social-media-posting event for most cancer patients.

Family, friends and medical staff cheer as they make a joyful, clanging noise, signaling the end of their chemotherapy treatment.

For Southern Pines resident and breast cancer survivor Christina Sullivan, her April 2023 celebration was particularly notable. She was the first patient to ring the bell in FirstHealth of the Carolinas’ new $68 million comprehensive outpatient cancer center.

The FirstHealth Cancer Center opened on March 27, 2023. Under one roof, patients can receive stateof-the-art outpatient care, from chemotherapy and radiation to palliative care, support services and even yoga. Natural light, calming decor and friendly faces occupy each of the center’s four floors.

Christina’s Story “I get happy when I walk in the cancer center door; it’s so fun,” Christina laughed, a little surprised at herself. “Everyone there – from the receptionist to volunteers to nurses and doctors – is so nice and easy to talk with. I can’t imagine not knowing the people I met there.”

At 31, Christina is young to have breast cancer. However, breast cancer can develop sooner for women with an inherited gene mutation – like Christina has.

Her mother, a two-time breast cancer survivor, had the BRCA1 gene mutation. Christina underwent genetic testing at age 26 and learned she also had the gene mutation, increasing her likelihood of developing the disease.

When a lump developed in her armpit in December 2021, Christina consulted with physicians. Her diagnosis: early-stage breast cancer.

Christina’s friends connected her with Saritha Ravella, M.D., a FirstHealth and Pinehurst Medical Clinic medical oncologist and hematologist. “Dr. Ravella was easy to talk with and welcomed my questions,” Christina said.

“Developing a personal connection with doctors is important to me, and I found that with all of my doctors at FirstHealth.”

Christina and her husband Brett also met Lynn Lanier, MSN, R.N., ONN-CG, breast cancer nurse navigator. Among their many functions, nurse navigators coordinate treatments, connect patients to helpful resources and serve as sounding boards.

“One of the things about every doctor’s appointment, but especially one with a cancer diagnosis, is that it’s hard to process what you just learned,” Christina reflected. “Having Lynn there was the first thing that made me think, FirstHealth is where we’re supposed to be.”

Today, Christina’s cancer-free.

However, her health care journey isn’t over. Christina’s cancer type carries an increased risk for ovarian cancer, so she returns to the cancer center regularly to meet with FirstHealth Gynecologic Oncologist Michael Sundborg, M.D. Other FirstHealth professionals help with family planning discussions. She’ll also take oral medication for five years to prevent cancer recurrence.

Comprehensive Cancer Care The new center’s expansive size gives Christina and other patients in the Sandhills access to next-level cancer services usually available only at large academic medical centers.

Getting Back to Everyday Life FirstHealth offers a new program for patients through its Inpatient Rehabilitation program.

David Botnick, DPT, MHA, CPHQ, tells us about physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) services, which offer specialized care for patients who have temporary or permanent loss of function and independence.

Q. Why should patients seek out PM&R? A. PM&R aids patients

in recovery after acute medical events, such as stroke, limb loss, brain injury or neurological disease. A PM&R physician will thoroughly assess your condition, needs and expectations and rule out any serious medical illnesses. A clear understanding of your condition and limitations will help you and your PM&R physician develop a treatment plan suited to your unique needs.

Q. What is the role of a doctor as opposed to a physical therapist during inpatient rehabilitation?

A. PM&R providers are

medical doctors who have gone through medical school and completed training in the specialty field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. They diagnose illnesses, design treatment protocols and can prescribe medications.

In coordination with therapists, they may design exercise programs tailored to patients’ needs and prescribe treatment regimens that are utilized by therapists.

PM&R providers Joel Pieper, M.D., and Michael Gwinn, M.D., work with each individual to help them regain functionality in everyday life and find their new normal. Both doctors are board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and electrodiagnostic medicine.

Q. How does partnering with other medical services make PM&R an easier plan for patient recovery?

A. Recovery after a major

medical event is confusing and difficult to navigate, especially while focusing on healing. PM&R partners with other specialists to coordinate care between various services, from orthopaedics and urology to lab services and home care. This comprehensive approach preserves quality of life and helps effectively manage co-existing conditions. Our providers will help navigate through the web of care so that nothing falls through the cracks. The primary goal of PM&R is to achieve maximal restoration of physical, psychosocial and vocational functioning through a comprehensive multidisciplinary team approach.

Lung-Sparing Surgery New research is changing the way surgeons approach lung cancer treatment.

Peter Ellman, M.D., cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at FirstHealth Reid Heart Center, explains a procedure called a segmentectomy.

Q. Can you describe a segmentectomy?

A. Segmentectomy is a surgical procedure that removes diseased lung tissue while leaving as much healthy tissue as possible. If you have a small tumor in one of the segments of your lung, you might be a candidate for a segmentectomy instead of a lobectomy, which removes an entire lobe from the affected lung.

Recent data tells us that a segmentectomy can be as good as a lobectomy.

Q. Who is a candidate for segmentectomy?

A. We are talking about

patients who have a small lung cancer, usually in the 1to 2-centimeter range, caught

early. It may have been found incidentally or during a screening CT scan of the chest, which is done for people who have a history of smoking.

If you have a history of smoking, talk to your primary care provider about getting a screening CT scan. It's low dose and no contrast and it can find lung cancers early, when they’re easier to treat.

Q. What is the recovery like for a segmentectomy?

A. For the robotic

lobectomy and the robotic segmentectomy, short-term recovery is not significantly different. However, in the long term, removing less lung tissue will preserve lung function. So, patients may notice a difference compared to how they would've felt with the full lobectomy. This is especially true for those who already had limited lung function due to smoking; they may have a little bit more wind and a little bit more stamina.

If you’re age 50 or older and you smoke or have smoked in the past, you may be a candidate for a low-dose CT lung cancer screening. Talk with your primary care provider to determine your eligibility.

A. FirstHealth Hospice

provides care for patients with a general life expectancy of six months or less. We offer at-home care for patients, as well as admission to the FirstHealth Hospice House for individuals who need more acute medical care than can be provided at home. We also provide end-of-life education and resources, including our annual advance directives event and an interfaith chapel with spiritual chaplains. In addition to caring for the patient, we support patients’ families and loved ones

Nonprofit hospices were also found to admit more critically ill patients immediately after a hospital stay.

Q. What is the difference between hospice and palliative care?

A. While hospice is

only available to people with a prognosis of less than six months who are no longer seeking life-prolonging medical therapies, palliative care is available at any stage of a progressive illness. Both hospice and palliative care work to address the medical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of the patient and family.

MANAGING THE ROLLER COASTER OF

Menopause

N

o, it’s not all in your head.

Menopause and its various symptoms can present disruptive symptoms for women in their 40s and 50s. The decline of estrogen and the fluctuation of other reproductive hormones in the body can cause myriad physical and emotional changes, including hot

flashes, fatigue, mood changes and sleep disturbances.

These symptoms last anywhere from two to eight years and can impact day-to-day function.

Menopause costs women an estimated $1.8 billion in lost working time per year, according to a Mayo Clinic study.

While virtually all women experience menopause, 73% of women weren’t actively treating their symptoms, a 2021 State of Menopause study found. And one-third of the women surveyed had never researched or sought out information regarding menopause before they experienced it.

Recognizing the Signs Lower estrogen levels contribute to a variety of menopause symptoms, including: • Hot flashes and night sweats • Mood swings and anxiety • Insomnia • Difficulty concentrating • Thinning tissue and increased bladder infections • Increased risk for osteoporosis and heart disease • Bloating and digestive problems • Dizziness • Breast heaviness and soreness • Electric shocks • Weight gain Pamela Kantorowski, M.D., an OB/ GYN at Southern Pines Women’s Health Center, a FirstHealth clinic, said that, while you cannot reverse the body’s natural changes, there are ways to help manage symptoms.

“Typically, when I have a patient come in and talk to me about menopause, I run through the different hormonal and nonhormonal options, dietary changes, as well as some over-thecounter supplements – St.-John’swort is one,” said Dr. Kantorowski.

“It’s a balance between what the symptoms are and what medication or treatment is best. Some herbal and over-the-counter remedies can also pose risks. It’s very important to discuss your options with your physician before using them.”

Medications to Manage Symptoms Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a popular option to treat common symptoms such as hot flashes and

vaginal discomfort. HRT focuses on replacing the estrogen in your body and can also help prevent bone loss and risk of bone fracture, associated with low estrogen. Hormone therapy is available in pill, patch, ring, gel or spray form. Dr. Kantorowski said more research is supporting the use of HRT to protect women against heart disease, the No. 1 cause of death in both men and women. She said being educated and making a decision about HRT early on in the process is important.

“We now have more information from the American Heart Association that if women start HRT within three to five years of the onset of menopause, they can provide themselves with some cardiovascular protection. After the body has experienced the lack of estrogen, and the elevated cholesterol effects, if you add estrogen back later it can actually cause harm rather than help.”

Nonhormonal medications, such as selective serotonin receptor inhibitors (SSRIs), also known as antidepressants, have been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes and improve low mood.

THE HEALING POWERS OF

Y

oga has been shown to improve sleep quality and fatigue in cancer patients and survivors, a clinical trial conducted through the University of Rochester found.

FirstHealth of the Carolinas participated in the original study to help patients with insomnia and cancer-related fatigue through Yoga for Cancer Survivors (YOCAS).

Cinnamon LeBlanc, an exercise specialist and certified YOCAS instructor, led the yoga portion of the study at FirstHealth as part of the greater University of Rochester trial.

LeBlanc held two 75-minute YOCAS sessions twice a week for four weeks. Each yoga posture in the program had a corresponding adaptive pose for individuals with a more limited range of motion.

“Being in some of those poses was difficult,” LeBlanc said. “For example, if you have knee issues or back problems, traditional child’s pose is pretty hard because you have to be on your knees. YOCAS gave us ways to adapt poses and use bolsters. Everyone also brought blankets because we did restorative poses, which require bolsters, chairs and props.”

Participants were randomized into three groups. Of the 740 participants, 251 were in the YOCAS

group, 238 were in the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) group and 251 were in the survivorship health education (SHE) group.

At the end of the study, yoga participants were found to have significant improvement in insomnia. While CBT proved effective in treating insomnia, more participants withdrew from the CBT group due to disliking the therapy compared to yoga.

Overall results showed YOCAS improves sleep and quality of life for participants. A more recent study by the University of Rochester also found cancer survivors who do YOCAS have lower levels of inflammation, which can help prevent cancer from returning.

Almost 40% of cancer survivors experience sleep issues up to five years after diagnosis, American Cancer Society researchers found in a separate study. Poor sleep or insomnia in cancer survivors was often linked to physical, emotional or financial distress.

LeBlanc has continued to lead yoga classes for cancer patients and survivors at the FirstHealth Cancer Center, home of the Cancer Wellness Program. She said many participants

attend the monthly class for years and see health benefits beyond improved sleep.

“I think the class offers a lot for stress reduction and relaxation.

Some of the people have been doing this for a long time, and I think the relaxation and community is beneficial,” she said. “You have a group of people who’ve been through the same experience and can offer support without necessarily talking about it.”

SEASONAL ILLNESSES As kids go back to school and activities migrate indoors, seasonal illnesses like colds, the flu and COVID-19 are ramping up. FirstHealth of the Carolinas helps navigate the sniffles and sneezes of the season.

FirstFutures: Growing our Own FIRSTHEALTH CNA ACADEMY

As FirstHealth’s footprint continues to grow in the Sandhills and beyond, the system is also committed to helping advance the careers of those who wish To Care for People. The newly launched Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Academy is one of many ways FirstHealth invests in its team. It offers those who are interested a chance to become certified nursing assistants while still working in their current jobs. They go to class in the morning or on days they don’t work in their departments, and FirstHealth helps pay for the cost of the program.

Chief Nursing Officer Jacklynn Lesniak, DNP, M.S., R.N., NEA-BC, calls the academy a win-win.

“Our core purpose here at FirstHealth is To Care for People, and the academy is a perfect example of how that mantra applies to our employees as well as our patients,” she said. “We are committed to maintaining a vibrant, caring and supportive environment, and a place where people have the opportunity to advance their careers.”

Tamara Beyer and Samantha Funk, two of the earliest graduates of FirstHealth’s CNA Academy, said signing up and completing the program was easy and allowed them work-life balance while advancing in their field.

Beyer came to FirstHealth four years ago after “doing anything and everything.” “I have bachelor’s degrees in communication and graphic design and in agriculture, both of which were done in Germany. I’ve worked on a horse farm. I’ve driven a semitruck. Working in elder care is what got me interested in health care.”

Beyer started out in FirstHealth’s medical records department prior to the pandemic. Oddly enough, COVID-19 and the impact it had on the system also inspired Beyer’s career shift into patient care.

“FirstHealth created the COVID response schedule, and I had the chance to help out in different departments. I got hooked on the emergency room,” Beyer said.

Soon after, Beyer heard about the CNA Academy and quickly signed up for it. She said the process was smooth and didn’t create extra stress. “[Our instructor] Angineek Gillenwater was wonderful.

She talked to our managers, and we would have class from 7:45 a.m. until about 2:15 p.m. The other hours each week, we were able to work in our regular departments.”

After finishing the program, Beyer is working in the emergency department at Moore Regional Hospital and has her next goal in mind – completing the NA II program.

“I’m very excited about that, and working in the ED. I love the fast pace and every day is different. I love the people in our unit, as well, because we always work together. We get the call for a critical patient coming in, and without saying much everybody gets what they need and gets ready. It’s great to watch and be a part of that.”

Samantha Funk echoed Beyer’s thoughts, saying she signed up for the CNA Academy shortly after joining FirstHealth in January 2023. “I started at the 3 Surgical unit concierge, and I was given this opportunity to go to school, continue working and be home for my kids. The CNA Academy made it much easier to move up the ladder and into patient care,” Funk said.

Coming from a family of nurses, Funk said she felt like health care ran in her family. As for the academy, she said the instructors worked with her schedule, allowing her to work shifts on 3 Surgical on days she didn’t have class.

“It’s been amazing, and now I’m going to the NA II program. After that, I plan to apply for some grants to finish my nursing degree,” Funk said. “Working for FirstHealth has been great. I don’t think I’ve ever loved working somewhere as much as a I love working here.”

The newly launched CNA Academy is just one of the many ways FirstHealth is investing in its team.

The initial funding was provided by The Foundation of FirstHealth from donations made by the community to Jacklynn Lesniak, support the development of nurses.

Staffing challenges are always present in health care, and the pandemic exacerbated many issues across the country.

By 2033, North Carolina is expected to face a shortage of nearly 12,500 registered nurses. At FirstHealth of the Carolinas, there is already a shortage of more than 500 nursing, clinical support staff and administrative support positions. Benefactors of the system and The Foundation of FirstHealth are committed to addressing the crisis, most recently with the creation of the FirstFutures Program.

Designed to combat patient care staffing shortages, The Foundation will use FirstFutures to provide student aid and financial incentives through the area’s community colleges to educate and train the next generation of our care team.

An additional facet of FirstFutures will be an academy designed as a partnership with local community colleges.

“We hope to establish a pipeline of students who will select an educational pathway that can help FirstHealth achieve its core purpose – To Care for People,” said Kathy Stockham, president of The Foundation of FirstHealth.

The FirstFutures Academy will identify and mentor high school students who are interested in a career at FirstHealth. Enrolling in the academy will open up scholarships for students and entry into the workforce following graduation.

FirstFutures will also provide scholarships in nursing and allied health to encourage additional participation at local community colleges.

“This is a multipronged approach because staffing shortages are a complex issue,” Stockham said. “The good news is we have a wonderful group of supporters who can help ensure that the future of FirstHealth’s care is just as good as what we have come to expect over the last quarter century.”

Avoid Hunger It is common to “save up” calories for the big meal.

But sitting down to a Thanksgiving feast when you are ravenous is a recipe for disaster.

“When we are hungry, we are more likely to make poor choices and overeat,” said Peeples. “Try to schedule your celebration earlier in the day and eat small healthy meals beforehand to keep hunger in check.”

Savor Smartly For some, Thanksgiving is not quite the same without mashed potatoes or a piece of pumpkin pie. Thankfully, you can enjoy holiday favorites – if you do it wisely.

“Instead of indulging in everything, pick one or two treats you really love and take the time to savor them,” advised Peeples. “Load the rest of your plate with healthier foods, like lean turkey, roasted vegetables and salad.”

Set Yourself Up for Success To ensure there is heart-healthy fare on the table, bring a dish (or two!) to gatherings. For example, substitue steamed veggies for green bean casserole.

Olive oil spray 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced 1 pear, cored and finely diced 1 apple, cored and finely diced 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 tbsp. maple syrup 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 2 cups wild rice 1 cup brown basmati rice 1 quart low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth 2 cups water, plus 1 cup if needed 2/3 cup dried cranberries 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp. fresh parsley, minced 2 tbsp. fresh thyme, minced

Directions 1.

Heat a large pot over high heat for one minute. Spray with olive oil spray; heat for 30 seconds. Add onions and sauté for one to two minutes, stirring frequently. Add pears and apples and sauté for two to three more minutes.

2. Quickly whisk together mustard, syrup and lemon juice and pour over onions and fruit.

Add wild rice and basmati rice. Sauté for two minutes, then pour in broth and water. Bring to a boil.

3. Add cranberries and black pepper. Boil for 10 minutes. If liquid level seems too low, add 1 more cup of water.

4. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook for 25 minutes, checking occasionally. Add parsley and thyme five minutes before done. Serve immediately.

The Fair Barn in Pinehurst was alive with the sounds of happy kids, moms, dads and grandparents on September 17, 2023, as “graduates” of the Clarke Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital joined their former hospital caregivers for a safari-themed celebration and reunion.

My life has been easier because the hospice staff knows just what to say and how to act. They’re wonderful people. They are such loving and kind people who treat people with dignity and kindness. I credit the director for having the knowledge and wisdom to find staff who are willing to help others taking their last steps and to help families take a break.

I am a patient myself and I have been treated like a queen. They have tried everything I’ve wanted and have succeeded in getting things I needed. I love them all.

I wish people would drop the stigma about hospice, that it is only a place where people come to die. I have been here, and I am alive and well.
