Dear DMAB Stakeholder, It is with great excitement that we present to you our 2018-2019 Annual Report! As a result of your support over the last year, much was accomplished. This report is a reflective summary of those accomplishments, our growth, new partnerships and the many rewarding journeys of our students. None of this would have been possible without your support and generosity.
Significant accomplishments: Since the start of the Don’t Miss A Beat Academy of the Arts, we have been able to offer choral and dance lessons, in addition to strings, woodwind & brass, and music theory, in partnership with UNF Music Mentors program. Thanks to the support and funding from the City of Jacksonville we have opened The Movement House dance studio located behind the Community Art Center. The City of Jacksonville and JaxParks & Recreation accepted Don’t Miss A Beat’s proposal in 2018 to open a dance studio in an old building behind their existing Community Art Center. Rather than demolish the small building, they agreed to complete the necessary construction to convert it into a dance studio, which expands the project’s useable space and provides room for more creative minds. Beyond the funding provided by the City for the building’s shell, the interior space needed to be transformed. We were very fortunate to have a donor provide funding to pay for the purchase and installation of the Marley Flooring that’s needed for the dance studio. In addition, ballet barres were donated from Customer Barres, LLC. DMAB is pleased to share our latest in-kind donation from the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) on Friday, March 6th. First, we would like to thank the JTA Board of Directors for approving the donation of a Champion Freightliner 20 passenger bus. We are especially grateful to Michael West, Inventory and Materials Manager at the JTA, for facilitating the process.
The bus donation will save significant dollars during our summer camp for field trips. In the past, having only a thirteen-passenger bus meant we had to hire another bus company when the group exceeded the bus capacity. JTA’s donation to our organization was a much needed addition to support our after-school and summer camp programs. We are so grateful to JTA for providing non-profits the opportunity to receive a bus once it is in their surplus inventory. Thank you once again to the JTA for donating the bus, together we are making a difference in the community.
Our programs have had a measurable impact in children’s lives, increasing their confidence, concentration, self-motivation, determination and leadership. We have seen a significant increase in students enrolled in our after-school program, academy and summer camps programs. Five of our students have successfully auditioned for Lavilla School of the Arts in theatre, vocal and instrumental music. In addition, one of our string students auditioned and was accepted into Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. We have continued to expand our program offerings. DMAB All Stars Performance Troupe, Junior All Stars, yoga and poetry are now offered as after-school programs. We hope you will continue supporting our programs as we continue breaking down social barriers, serving the most underserved, and giving every child the opportunity they deserve. Academy of the Arts Program The Don’t Miss A Beat Academy of the Arts opened September 21, 2015 to offer FREE Performing Arts instruction in the areas of Dance, Visual Art, Band (Woodwind & Brass), and Strings. We recently expanded the academy to include our Music and Arts Summer Camp Intensive, Chorus, Music Theory, Theatrical Production, Yoga, and our “Creatively Young” Program.
The Academy, in partnership with UNF Music Mentors Program, engages junior and senior UNF music students to teach Woodwind & Brass, Strings and Music Theory. Our strings program is headed by Gary Murch with W.E. Cherry Elementary School. Also, through our Creatively Young Program, we target toddlers in key stages and chronicle their development with Artistic connectors and concepts that can bridge the gap and add excitement to the basic stages of growth they are rapidly experiencing. DMAB offers this program in partnership with the Don Brewer Head Start Early Learning Center and the Sulzbacher Village. We believe that as many young people as possible should have the opportunity to experience the arts. The arts is a great equalizer, promoting academic success, cultural awareness, creativity and self-confidence. Our activities reflect our vision of the arts being a “bridge to a better life.”

Visiting Artist Series
Music and Arts Summer Camp Intensive
Don’t Miss A Beat provides the community with a venue for local actors, directors, writers, designers and technicians to gain valuable experience, to showcase their talents, and to give aspiring artists a chance to cultivate their emerging talents. It is through this series that students at DMAB get full exposure to working professionals in the Performing Arts. Through this program we have been fortunate to have guests such as dancers Jeroboam Bozeman and Hope Boykin, both with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. We also had Grammy winning artist Christian McBride stop by the center to share his story of success and to inspire the kids that anything is possible in life as long as they work hard and believe.
Don’t Miss A Beat is an arts-based non-profit organization that focuses on the “whole child” through mentorship. Our flagship program is the Music & Arts Summer camp. This is a six-week summer camp where we expose children to a curriculum that involves Dance, Drama, Spoken Word, Choir, Photography and the Visual Arts. Once the school year begins, we focus on the after school programs, assisting the children with their studies at school, and helping them to excel academically. At DMAB, we have a dual focus on the arts and academic achievement, which is why we have two programs during the school year that target these areas.

Parent Testimonial Ms. Pacheco, whose daughter Anjaly is one of our outstanding students and a member of the DMAB All Stars Performance Troupe, has auditioned and been accepted into Lavilla School of the Arts in Theatre for the 2020-2021 school year.
“
Don’t Miss A Beat has been a door of opportunities and new experiences for my daughter Anjaly. When we were looking for a summer program for Anjaly, we never realized we were going to find the family and community support we have found at Don’t Miss A Beat. My daughter has had the privilege to receive training with skilled professionals in every branch of the Arts. Being exposed to the arts on a daily basis has given my daughter a boost in her self-esteem and an incredible sense of confidence which she never had before. She has made solid relationships with like-minded children and looks forward, with extreme excitement, to attending DMAB everyday. – Ms. Pacheco, mother of Anjaly
