At the start of the 2022-23 school year, De La Salle welcomed 20 new faculty and staff members. It was the largest intake of Lasallian Partners in decades, primarily due to the introduction of several new appointments, as well as some well-deserved retirements.

Administratively, a new Vice President for Finance started in early October and three new management positions have been created: Director for Admissions, Director of Communications, and Director of Student Activities. At the same time, the school replaced two campus ministry members, hired eight new faculty members, and had multiple maintenance and cafeteria staff join the school family this year.

Chris Garavaglia – Vice President for Finance

De La Salle’s new Vice President for Finance/CFO will be Christine (Chris) Garavaglia. Chris comes from Bishop O’Dowd in Oakland, where she was the CFO since 2011. At O’Dowd, Chris developed a financial modeling tool with a 15-year scenario analysis, implemented a reserve management plan, launched O’Dowd’s compensation study (twice), and was a visible and impactful leader during COVID. Chris’ daughters went to Carondelet and one is married to De La Salle’s very own Travis Pacos ’11. Her husband, Mark Garavaglia ’75, is a De La Salle alumnus, and many of her family are graduates of Carondelet or De La Salle. Chris was described as highly competent and compassionate; whip-smart and a strategic thinker; as well as someone concerned about people and cognizant of the bottom line. The school is lucky to have her following behind the incomparable Lynne Jones.

Michelle Erickson – Director of Communications

Michelle Erickson joins De La Salle as Director of Communications. In this capacity, she is tasked with telling De La Salle’s unique story, as well as driving communications that increase engagement and awareness for the school. Michelle brings with her a wealth of corporate relations and public relations experience, across multiple industry sectors. In the past, she has worked with brands like Visa, HP, IBM, and Travelzoo. She also volunteered her time, managing PTA communications, at Los Cerros Middle School and Green Valley Elementary School. Michelle completes De La Salle’s communications team, which also includes Rich Davi, Communications Coordinator.

Free Gary – Director of Admissions

Free Gary brings over 10 years of admissions experience to De La Salle. Previously, he was the Associate Director of Admissions at San Francisco University High School. He additionally held the position of Admissions Associate at the Drew School in San Francisco From 2012-19, where he also received experience as an English teacher, was the Director of Student Activities, an Assistant Athletic Director, and even a Student Advisor. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Maine, where he played football, and he will complete his Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 2023.

Jennifer Stein – Director of Student Activities

Jennifer Stein is De La Salle’s new Director of Student Activities. Jennifer has more than 15 years of experience working in education and comes to De La Salle after serving as the Student Activities Program Director at her alma mater, St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, since 2013. In her new role at De La Salle, Jennifer aims to create a healthy balance between academics and co-curricular activities and prides herself on building relations, nurturing student leaders, creating inclusive activities, celebrating diversity, and promoting school spirit.
