Letter from the Head of School I am honored and humbled to write to you as De La Salle Academy’s (DLSA) new Head of School. As an alumnus and member of the faculty for the past ten years, I am deeply connected and committed to the mission of DLSA. Each one of our students has a story, I would like to share mine so you have a better understanding of what led me to be in my position today. Twenty-five years ago, my mother and I took a subway ride from the Bronx into the Upper West Side of Manhattan that would forever change our lives. On a cold January morning, we woke up early so that I could take the entrance exam at DLSA. Like many immigrant and low-income families, we had little economic resources and as a result, a quality education became the main means by which I could aspire to the life my parents could not provide in Colombia.
I was astounded that every adult and student knew my name, held high social and academic standards for me, and surrounded me with care and support during moments of challenge.
Twenty-five years ago, my mother and I took a subway ride from the Bronx into the Upper West Side of Manhattan that would forever change our lives. DLSA was recommended to us by my fifthgrade teacher who felt that I needed a more challenging environment than my local public school could offer at that time. However, more than a rigorous academic environment, I found a home. DLSA was truly the first time where I felt connected to a larger community of adults and students.
DLSA was the place where I began to see that another form of schooling was possible. It was an environment where I could safely take risks and maximize my gifts. Throughout the rest of my educational career, DLSA became the measure by which I would assess all of my educational experiences. While I have

DLSA students and their families. As Head of School, my primary goal is to build on the work of the founding faculty and students and support the school’s evolution in this next phase of its history. I know that what makes DLSA so unique is its commitment to a loving community and spiritual depth, combined with a high academic standard. Moreover, as we continue our mission to provide access to a quality independent school experience for all students, regardless of their socio-economic status, DLSA will continue to find ways to not merely accept students into our community, but ensure that they feel a sense of belonging and joy.
Ten years ago, when I came back as a researcher, my intention was not to work at DLSA. Instead, I wanted to learn from students about ways schools impacted their identity formation and how that in turn shaped their academic achievement. While conducting my study, I fell in love all over again with the faculty, administration, and students of the school. I also felt increasingly called to use what I was learning with the school and share my expertise to improve the academic, social, and emotional lives of our students. When the opportunity came for me to work part-time with the school teaching American Studies, I was delighted to come back home.
This year, I encourage and invite you all to visit us at DLSA. If you have not had the opportunity to come spend time with our exceptional middle school students, I welcome you to do so. I look forward to seeing you on West 43rd Street. Warmest regards,
Today, I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with a talented, mission-driven team of administrators and teachers. This remarkable group of adults works tirelessly to ensure DLSA’s mission is aligned with the specific needs of this next generation of

Letter from the Board Co-Chairs It is our honor to share our first ever Annual Report. This past academic year was momentous in many ways including the retirement of our Founder and President Emeritus, Brother Brian Carty, FSC. We were delighted to honor him and his 37 years of dedication and service to De La Salle Academy (DLSA) on March 11, 2021 with a virtual benefit. The proceeds of the night went to the Brother Brian Carty Legacy Fund supporting financial aid. The outpouring of support and generosity to the Brother Brian Carty Legacy Fund was a true testament to the impact that Brother Brian has had on the DLSA community and beyond.
During these unprecedented times, it has been reassuring to see the core values of DLSA: Care, Support, and Respect, not only remain, but THRIVE. We were amazed at the ability of our tremendous faculty and staff to pivot into the uncharted territory of remote learning, the tenacity of our students to rise to the many challenges put in front of them, and the unwavering leadership of our administration throughout the last twelve months. As we move ahead in 2021-2022, the resilience of this exceptional school community is evident and we will undoubtedly continue to flourish. On July 1, 2021, we welcomed our new Head of School, Dr. Angel R. Gonzalez, ‘99. Dr. Gonzalez has worked tirelessly and in conjunction with the Board to ensure DLSA's academic vigor along with maintaining our core values continued despite being remote for a greater part of last year.
Thanks to the kindness of so many, we raised $624,860, surpassing our goal of $550,000! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your commitment and financial support to the Brother Brian Carty Legacy Fund.

Now in our thirty-eighth year, we look forward to the possibilities, opportunities, and promise of this School that has transformed the lives of 1,799 alumni. We would not be here today without the generous financial support of so many, including the Kelly Alumni, countless foundations, past and present Board members, and donors who gave and continue to give because they believe in “De La Salle Difference.”
together in furthering our mission. Now more than ever, it is important to invest in these children who with our help become the leaders of tomorrow. We welcome you to come visit DLSA this school year. In appreciation,
From the beginning, it has been a collective effort that enabled DLSA to open back in 1984. We are excited to see in the 2021-2022 academic year, what we can accomplish

Mariam A. '22 In my process of looking for a good school that helps those struggling financially and one with a true community I found De La Salle Academy (DLSA). I immediately liked DLSA because of the sisterhood and brotherhood that is there. I can be myself at DLSA and enjoy being a member of the tight knit community. Before DLSA, I was in public school. The public schools I was in claimed to revolve around community but I never felt the community. I felt that no one there truly cared about me until I came to DLSA. Our school isn’t about empty promises but about genuine caring for the students. It is real and you felt the welcoming spirit even online last year when we were remote.
I love math and ELA because the teachers make it so fun and make sure that the students understand. This year, I look forward to being in person after a whole year of being at home. I will finally be able to have the full experience of DLSA. When I started DLSA it changed my perspective of school in general. Before DLSA, I would never look forward to school and would count the hours until I could go home. Now, I look forward to attending school. My dreams for the future are to attend a good high school and college, and get into medical school. I want to be able to help people and give back. My role model is Marie Curie because she was determined and was dedicated to her job throughout her entire life. Plus, she was the first woman to receive a Nobel prize. 8
Graduation Day CLASS OF 2021 On Thursday, June 17, 2021, DLSA held its 36th Graduation, in-person at The Horace Mann School, in Riverdale, New York. Special thanks to our Trustee, Dr. Thomas Kelly, Head of Horace Mann, who made this day possible. For our 53 students, it was a joyous way to celebrate all their accomplishments with their families following a challenging year of remote and hybrid learning. Speakers included: Samuel Kim ‘21 and Yangchen Sherpa ‘21 (both nominated by their fellow classmates), and alumni speakers Declan Casey ‘13 and Kadiata Diallo ‘13.

De La Salle has taught me so much and has prepared me to be a leader in my future schools and community, and it was not the building or the name that did that, but the people within it, and I am forever grateful. ~ Samuel Kim '21

This fall, I am happy to begin the next step of my academic journey at the University of Pennsylvania. My experience at De La Salle Academy (DLSA) has taught me what it means to be in a community and the value of having a servant leader mindset; I will be carrying these lessons as I begin to craft my story at Penn. Through my time at Penn, I hope to teach Philadelphia public school students about community service through my nonprofit, which aims to provide education to underprivileged youth in Bangladesh. Without the love and guidance that I have received at DLSA, my story would not be the same. ~ Jahin Rahman '17

Emmanuel Daudu '15 An envelope from De La Salle Academy (DLSA) arrived in my mailbox. I gave that lottery ticket of exuberant joy or heavy sadness to my parents. They opened the envelope and gave me the news. My joy overflowed. I was accepted into DLSA. I started DLSA in the Fall of 2013 as an incoming seventh grader. I remember walking up the long, winding stairs of the old DLSA building. Dark blue, worn walls saturated with laughs, hugs, and studying welcomed me everyday. Coming into DLSA, I only expected my workload would increase and that was definitely true. However, my expectations for what a community looked like in a learning environment did not exist. I had a bookish disposition when I was a kid. I appreciated interacting with others, but I preferred to study and complete classwork by myself. DLSA uprooted that mentality. I came into DLSA with a touch of hubris. I did well throughout elementary school and thought I was the best at school. Then I took Brother David’s math class. Algebra refused to work with my head. I ended up meeting with Brother David after school several times a week. I quickly realized that I was not going to get through DLSA on my own. Relying on others to support you when you are unable to do a task on your own was a novel concept to me. In retrospect, I am incredibly grateful to have learned that lesson in middle school rather than in high school or college. If I tried to balance the responsibilities I have now without having a team around me, I would have buckled under the pressure a long time ago. I have fond memories of Dr. Gonzalez’s (Dr. G) American Studies course and Mr. Tapscott’s Biology
13
course. However, health class with Mr. Tapscott was a less than enjoyable time, but funny too look back on nevertheless. Despite my current love of history, I did the best in Biology during DLSA. The excellent education I received emboldened me to explore the scientific field during high school. I did an internship at Columbia’s Irving Medical Center where I assisted in the genomics department. Outside of the classroom, I appreciate the fellowship and self-reflection that DLSA sought to cultivate. I remember the eighth grade boys retreat. We were packed into rooms for sleep and elbow-to-elbow in a dining hall to eat. I played and prayed throughout the whole time. During the retreat, I asked myself who I wanted to be. I decided on: a Christian, kind, and someone people could look to for help. I have received help through my life journey from many unsuspecting sources, including DLSA. I hope I can pay the help forward to whoever comes my way in this life. After DLSA, I attended The Trinity School for high school. I received instruction from some of the best teachers around and thank DLSA for putting me in a position to enter Trinity. While in high school, I interned at NYC Department of Youth and Community Development and Columbia University Medical Center. After graduating high school, I interned at the Manhattan District Attorney. Currently, I am a junior at Cornell University studying Industrial and Labor Relations. I hope to go to law school and study labor law or antitrust law. On campus, I am the Chair of Finance of the Prison Reform Education Project, a brother at Kappa Alpha Pi pre-law fraternity, a brother at Pi Lambda Sigma pre-government fraternity. Off campus, I am the Vice President of Budding Branches, a non-profit of undergraduate volunteers at over 30 US colleges that provide college advice to high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds. In order to relax from the daily whirlwind, I record music under my alter-ego Segun and dance.
De La Salle gave me the foundation to achieve what I have. My parents came to America as Nigerian immigrants with no money and no knowledge of the educational system. DLSA provided me with the academic support that an immigrant parent working three jobs in a day could not afford to give. DLSA’s practice of giving opportunity to those who lack opportunity but are eager to seize their chances allows society to get access to the unique talents of the otherwise overlooked. DLSA’s mission not only makes a great school, but a better world.

Honoring Brother Brian On Thursday, March 11, 2021, De La Salle Academy held its first ever Virtual Benefit, and honored Brother Brian Carty, FSC, Founder and President Emeritus. The event honored his legacy, dedication, commitment, and devotion for the last 36 years to all “his children” at DLSA. The proceeds of the Benefit went to the Brother Brian Carty Legacy Fund (BBC Legacy Fund). The BBC Legacy Fund goes directly to support financial aid at DLSA. Brother Brian has never turned away a family throughout the years because they could not afford tuition.
A gift to the BBC Legacy Fund, ensures that the next generation of families who need financial assistance can begin their own journeys and that the school can carry on the mission that Brother Brian started so many years ago. Thank you to everyone who made a gift. We raised $624,860, exceeding our goal of $550,000! 15

A N N U A L G I V I N G Individuals, Corporations, & Foundations Thank you to all who supported us in 2020-2021. We raised $1,345,811 from individuals, foundations, corporations, and community service organizations. Ninety percent of the operating revenue comes from sources other than tuition and the generosity of our donors. Our gratitude to all our supporters who even during this very extremely devastating and challenging year made a donation to DLSA.

As part of the De La Salle Academy (DLSA) family and one of the original 54, I donate because it is imperative that we continue this legacy of excellence, education and community. Being a DLSA student is a uniquely wonderful and transformative experience. Donating allows me to support all of the amazing work being done to create opportunities for NYC youth who may not normally have access to a high quality education that is truly life changing.

De La Salle Academy is an important part of who I am today - put simply, it changed the course of my life. Participating in the Alumni Council and engaging in the school's fundraising efforts year after year has been my way of giving back to the DLSA community, which has remained true to its beautiful mission. “. ~ John Volquez '09

Our Mission To offer academically talented, economically less advantaged children of diverse backgrounds a life-changing educational experience in grades 6-8, where they are empowered to reach their full potential. With the support of caring and dedicated teachers, students are introduced to an innovative yet challenging academic curriculum, strong core values, character development, and they learn to foster a sense of community. Upon graduation, our youngsters are wellequipped to become the leaders of tomorrow. De La Salle believes in a need-blind admissions process to ensure that students are evaluated based solely on their merits and not on their families’ ability to pay.
