DE LA SALLE ACADEMY
DE LA SALLE ACADEMY Where Middle School Matters
Mission Statement De La Salle Academy (DLSA) is a transformative, independent middle school for academically talented students seeking greater educational access and opportunities in New York City, regardless of their financial means. We guide our students through a challenging, creative, and valuesdriven curriculum that inspires curiosity, confidence, and self-discovery. Rooted in the Lasallian tradition and in partnership with our families, our diverse community empowers students to lead with character, purpose, and generosity.
Guided by Values Under the guidance of Head of School Dr. Angel Gonzalez ’99, and inspired by our mission, we believe education is transformative when it develops both the head and the heart. From the moment students join our community, they begin to understand that we are countercultural. We challenge them to look beyond themselves, to embrace a life of purpose, and to recognize their responsibility to others. Through our Elements of Community, students are introduced to three guiding values that shape who we are and how we live: Care, Support, and Respect. These values are more than words. They are the foundation of our community and the lens through which we encourage every student to learn, lead, and serve.
Dr. Ángel Gonzalez ’99 Head of School

The DLSA Experience
The DLSA experience is designed to support each child’s growth, well-being, and sense of belonging while building meaningful connections among students, families, and the school community. Advisory and Homeroom provide consistent spaces for students to connect, discuss important topics, and build relationships, while Community Meetings bring students and faculty/staff together to strengthen school connection. Our dress code reinforces a less competitive atmosphere, pride, and shared expectations, and the school's cellphone-free environment encourages students to be present, engaged, and connected with one another. Three days a week, Universal Study Hall provides additional academic support, giving students dedicated time to work with teachers, reinforce skills, and complete coursework with guidance. Retreats are a DLSA tradition, with grade-specific themes that build upon one another to foster belonging, confidence, resilience, and leadership. In addition, we provide a daylong family retreat that explores relevant topics about their child's growth and development and provide connection and community among our parents.

C O M M U N IT Y A N D B E L O N G I N G Sixth grade is a formative time as students make the transition to middle school and begin taking greater ownership of their learning. At De La Salle Academy, students enter a welcoming community where they quickly build friendships, establish strong study habits, and develop the confidence to take on new academic challenges. Teachers at De La Salle Academy work closely with students to strengthen organization, independence, and communication skills while helping them adjust to the expectations and routines of middle school. Students are encouraged to ask questions, take responsibility for their work, and learn from their mistakes in a supportive environment. Throughout the year, students grow both academically and personally. By the end of sixth grade, they are not only stronger learners, but prepared to take on the opportunities and challenges of the years ahead.
During their 6th grade year, students: Begin to explore world languages Engage in arts, athletics, and after-school enrichment Participate in a 6th grade retreat where they begin to establish the foundation of LaSallian community Are introduced to two foundational courses, Learning to Learn, and Intro to Emotional Intelligence, to develop age appropriate executive functioning and self advocacy skills Join a multi-grade advisory that gives them an anchor throughout their school day, social connections outside their classes, and an additional trusted adult to support their journey Challenge themselves outside their comfort zone by visiting IFly, Adventure Park, and other class trips.

E X P L O R AT I O N A N D G R O W T H The seventh grade year students are beginning to ask important questions about who they are, what they value, and who they are becoming. At De La Salle Academy, we recognize this important transition and provide the guidance, encouragement, and the support students need to navigate their world with confidence. As students engage in increasingly complex academic work, they are encouraged to think independently, ask thoughtful questions, take intellectual risks, and develop their own perspectives. Across every subject area, they deepen their understanding and begin to see connections between what they learn and the world around them. Seventh grade is a meaningful rite of passage: a time when childhood begins to give way to young adulthood. At De La Salle Academy, families can feel confident knowing that their children are being guided through this important stage of their personal growth.
During their 7th grade year, students: Grow in their appreciation and understanding of world languages Engage in arts, athletics, and after-school enrichment with increased opportunities for choice Participate in a 7th grade retreat that provides students with an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, establish healthy and trusting relationships with supportive adults, and solidify their relationships as a cohort. Receive guidance through a 7th grade evaluation as they prepare for the high school admissions process Experience evolving academic programming and challenges that respond to their changing learning needs as they grow and develop.

L E A R N I N G A N D L E A D I N G W IT H P U R P O S E As the young leaders of our school community, 8th graders are challenged to set the tone for the school year through their character, integrity, and commitment to others. Throughout the year, 8th graders have opportunities to serve as student ambassadors, community meeting speakers, and mentors to younger students. These experiences help them develop confidence, responsibility, and the ability to lead with purpose. At the same time, 8th grade is a critical year of preparation for high school. Students receive increased guidance and support as they balance the demands of their 8th-grade coursework with the high school admissions process. We work closely with students to help them stay focused academically while preparing applications, completing interviews, visiting schools, and making thoughtful decisions about their next step. Graduates leave De La Salle Academy prepared not only for academically rigorous high schools, but also for lives of purpose, generosity, leadership, and service.

VOICES FROM OUR COMMUNITY: ALUMNUS & TRUSTEE
JOHN VOLQUEZ ’09
After graduating from DLSA, John Volquez '09 attended the Asheville School, then Yale University, where he earned a BA in Ethics, Politics, and Economics. John is a partner at Drive Capital. He joined DLSA's Board of Trustees in 2026.
“Getting into De La Salle Academy was easily the most life-changing thing that has happened to me. It pulled me off a path that was very likely heading toward dropping out of high school, which is what so many young men in my community did, and set me on a path that led to graduating from Yale. As a new DLSA Trustee, I'm glad to be dedicating my time and resources to making sure stories like mine aren't anomalies in our communities, but a dependable standard.”
VOICES FROM OUR COMMUNITY WORLD LANGUAGE CHAIR MS. AMY HERNANDEZ ’05
“My name is Amy Hernandez (but I go by Maestra). I teach Novice and Proficient Spanish classes. I am a proud De La Salle Academy Alum and after DLSA I attended LREI - Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School. After high school, I studied at Iona College and did my masters at Hunter College, CUNY. Returning to teach at DLSA after once being a student here has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. For me, teaching is a vocation one that requires humility, openness, and a willingness to learn as much from my students as they learn from me. I wanted to be part of the impact DLSA continues to have on others. During my time as a student, I remember Brother David, my chemistry teacher, as tough on the outside but soft at heart. He taught me that every student is worth knowing, even when it’s difficult. That lesson continues to shape who I am as a teacher. At DLSA, each student is seen and heard. We take the time to truly know our students, cultivate meaningful relationships with them, and create an environment where they feel known, valued, and supported. I think this is what makes DLSA special, not that difficulties won’t arise, but that we can trust in each other to navigate them together.”
VOICES FROM OUR COMMUNITY: CURRENT STUDENT
“Before attending De La Salle Academy, I attended a public school in the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx. I joined DLSA in the sixth grade. De La Salle Academy is uniquely different from other schools. There will be no other school that has a community that is as diverse as ours. Unlike other schools, De La Salle accepts students not because of their income, but because they see talent in each and every student that comes to DLSA, which is what makes this school distinct.”
VOICES FROM OUR C O M M U N IT Y: C U R R E NT ST U D E NT
“Prior to De La Salle Academy I attended public school in Elmhurst, Queens. I entered De La Salle Academy in the 7th grade. When I first arrived at De La Salle, I thought it was going to be like any other school where they just come, learn, and go, but the second I walked in I could have not been more wrong. I still remember the times at lunch when the 8th graders asked me to sit with them at lunch, I remember the times my classmates would help me with my schedule, and I remember the times where everyone didn't feel insecure about their culture and shared it with everyone. I felt safe, I felt happy, I felt like I was a part of a family and I've carried that to senior year teaching the younger kids how to be Lasallian.”

“Prior to De La Salle Academy I attended a public school in Glendale, Queen. I entered DLSA in the 6th grade. One thing De La Salle has given me is a strong sense of community and friendships that I hope other students get to experience too. Everyone here has made me feel welcomed and supported, and I have learned that it is important to be yourself and be there for others. I hope every student gets to make great memories, meet new people, and feel like they are part of something special at De La Salle.”

“Before attending De La Salle Academy, I attended a public school in the Kingsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx. I joined DLSA in the sixth grade. De La Salle Academy is very different from most other schools. It’s not just because of its education or the selective test you must take to get in. It is because of its community. Everyone cares for each other, and everyone knows each other. While some might argue that such a small and familiar environment could be distracting, I find that knowing everyone actually helps my education. It allows me to participate in conversations without hesitation and ask teachers questions without being nervous. Most importantly, it has helped connect better with my peers and understand their feelings, even when it difficult for them. Just those things alone have allowed me to grow in ways I never knew were possible for me. I was not very social and was very anxious when I first came to this school, but on the first day, it felt like I was brought into this community with a warm hug. Now I am in eighth grade, and it is my turn to welcome the new members of our community.”
