The People of Derryfield Message from the Head of School, Andy Chappell Each year we shine a light on one or two of our seven Core Values. This year, we chose to focus on Individuality and Community. At first glance, these two values may seem to stand in contrast. Yet, in bringing them together, our goal is to highlight an essential truth of the Derryfield experience: it is our differences as individuals that make us a strong, more vibrant community.

To deepen our exploration of these values, we selected “Reaching Across Divides” as the theme for this year’s Isakovich-Critz Family Community Enrichment programming. This fall, we welcomed two remarkable authors to campus—Gene Luen Yang, author of American Born Chinese, and Caitlin Alifirenka, co-author of I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives— who shared powerful stories about how reading and storytelling can move us beyond our comfort zones, helping us see the world through others’ eyes and to build empathy in the process. Members of our community—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—also stepped forward at Community Meetings to share their stories, giving us a chance to get to know one another more deeply and to celebrate the many perspectives that enrich life at Derryfield.

Since beginning my tenure as Head of School in 2022, I have had the privilege of connecting with so many of you and hearing your individual stories. These conversations have been invaluable in shaping a shared vision for Derryfield’s future, embodied in our new strategic plan, adopted by the Board of Trustees this past May.

With five strategic commitments firmly in place, and four robust first-year initiatives underway, we are entering a transformative new chapter—one guided by a clear vision that strengthens our foundation of academic excellence, human connection, and an inclusive community, while embracing the exciting possibilities of modern learning.

At the heart of our new strategic plan are the people of Derryfield and their stories. This year’s All School President, Connor Bradley ’26, beautifully communicated his story, a version of which I’ve heard many times from all of you, during our Fall Philanthropy Kickoff in October: “When I first came to Derryfield, I was drawn by its academic reputation. What I didn’t realize was how deeply it would shape me, not just as a student, but as a person. Derryfield has taught me how to be confident, compassionate, and curious.”

Connor’s sentiment echoes across generations, resonating just as strongly today as it did when Michael Broad ’69— Derryfield's first ever all-school president and this year’s Cikacz Family Philanthropy Award recipient—walked our halls.

Service Fundraising with Flowers raised nearly $1,000 for SAVE THE CHILDREN

Fundraising with Flowers Even though it may seem old school, no prom ensemble is deemed complete without a corsage or boutonniere.

Each May, Derryfield students celebrate the many stages leading up to the DS prom, including crafting a prom-posal, coordinating colors with friends and partners, shopping for the perfect outfit, and making appointments for hair and nails and tans. The final touch is flowers.

Two years ago, Xinyi (Elosa) Zhou ’26, who had experience selling flowers for a non-profit organization, convinced her friends Dina Adhikari ’26 and Sofia Koshy ’26 that they could make and sell corsages and boutonnieres to Derryfield students as a way to raise money for a cause.

They checked out designs online, priced out flowers and other supplies, crafted a logo for “About Flower,” and taped up flyers around campus.

The business plan, as it were, turned out to be the easy part of the process.

Creating the actual products was another story. The morning of prom the three friends congregated at Adhikari’s house to get started.

With Zhou leading the way, the trio began to bend wire, fashion ribbon, intertwine flowers, and adhere their creations with floral glue. They had 19 orders to fulfill, and it took them the entire day. They soon discovered the glue took much longer than expected to dry, and shaping the wire bases was an artform. In the end, they finished with little time to spare to deliver the boxed final products to their customers (and get themselves ready to attend the event).

This spring, the floral design team were seasoned professionals. Zhou said input from their spring 2024 customers helped them to refine their process.

“We used plastic bases for the corsages, which saved us time in the construction process, and made for a better product. And we told people they could send ‘inspo’ photos, so we could mimic designs, rather than come up with our own.”

Koshy noted with a laugh, “We also started MUCH earlier in the day, because last year we didn’t arrive at Dina’s house until around 10:00 a.m.”

All of their hard work went toward their designated cause, Save the Children. In 2024 they raised $640, and this past May they raised nearly $1,000. When asked how they chose this particular charity, Adhikari explained, “Many of the fundraising events at Derryfield are for local organizations, but we wanted to choose an international non-profit. We did a lot of background research, because we were looking for a very reputable charity that uses the bulk of their donations for their clients, not their own expenses.”

Since all three students are now seniors, May of 2026 will be their final “About Flower” adventure.

Adhikari said, “We think other members of the GIVE club might continue this project after we are gone—we hope so, because it has been so much fun.”

GIVE Club at Derryfield GIVE (Get Involved, Value Everyone) is a student-led service club. Over 100 members of the Upper School participate in GIVE activities, either organized by the club, or student devised. Group service efforts include volunteering at the NH Food Bank distribution center, tutoring refugees at the Center for New Americans, and preparing and serving meals at the FIT (Families in Transition) Family Shelter. The club also organizes fundraisers and drives, including the annual holiday Giving Tree, a fall canned food drive, and Dancing With the (Derryfield) Stars.

Community Building at FIT GIVE Club members bring their own passions and ideas to the club as a whole. One example is the FIT Family Shelter dinner, now in its third year. As a sophomore, Camille Garcia ’26, wanted to reach out to the larger Manchester community by connecting over food. She wrote to the manager of the FIT Family Shelter, proposing her vision that “students come and cook a meal, and everyone eats in a family style, like having a big community party.”

The first iteration was a spaghetti and meatball dinner in the spring of 2024. In the winter of 2025, a

birthday party element was added to the event. Garcia, now a senior and president of the club, explains, “We decided it would be fun to bring a birthday celebration to the shelter, because many of the families who are there don’t have the resources to host parties for their children. On the day of the event, we came to the shelter with a bunch of decorations, a cake, and other treats. We also brought supplies to do craft projects, and games for the children and adults to play. The kids were SO excited to have a birthday party, and it turned out to be the actual birthday of one of the long-time adult residents, so everyone sang to her, which brought tears to her eyes. ”

Garcia added, “Our real goal with our visit was to introduce our two communities–and to make the residents at the shelter realize they are not forgotten. Afterwards, we definitely felt like our visit served a purpose.”

The tradition that Camille, now a senior and GIVE co-president, initiated has continued and strengthened. This year, GIVE will host this community event at FIT three times, beginning with a Halloween pumpkin-carving party and games.

$170,000 Raised

FIT WALK AGAINST HUNGER

In May GIVE members participated in the FIT Walk Against Hunger, an annual event that this year drew over 650 walkers and raised $170,000. Derryfield students raised money, walked in the event, and helped staff activities, including face painting and games.

A

s students returned to campus this year, some gradebooks looked a bit different. In these courses, feedback is broken down into discrete skills from the Portrait of a Derryfield Graduate (e.g. Communication, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Research, etc), replacing the traditional breakdown by assignment type (quiz, test, essay, project, lab, etc). This is what we call “portrait-based grading” and it is transforming the way that Derryfield faculty give feedback.

More broadly, it is advancing Derryfield’s 21st Century academic program.

Over the course of the year, faculty across the school will be piloting this model of grading and working in small, collaborative teams to workshop and improve their approach. At the end of the year, DS faculty will have refined and developed portrait-based grading such that it can be implemented in every classroom from sixth through twelfth grade for the 2026-2027 academic year.

What is Portrait-Based Grading?

There is a widespread movement in both independent and public education toward an approach often referred to as “standards-based grading.” While many schools around the country have adopted “standards-based grading,” it is delivered in many forms, depending on each schools’ interpretation. It can range from tweaks like a new rubric model in individual classes, to a completely overhauled transcript that reports progress in particular skills rather than letter grades. Staying true to Derryfield’s tried-and-true approach to education, we seek to capture the best of this new approach while preserving the best of what we know works.

Course: American Literature Activity: Trial of John Proctor After students in 9th Grade English classes finish reading about the famous Salem witchcraft trial in Arthur Miller’s masterpiece, The Crucible, they stage their own trials where they put the main character, John Proctor, on trial for heresy. Students take on the roles of attorneys prosecuting or defending Proctor, as well as witnesses and jurors. As sparks fly in the courtroom between the attorneys and unfriendly witnesses in cross examination, students learn to apply their civil discourse skills to an especially challenging scenario: How do I stay respectful and open-minded when my interlocutor disagrees with my premises and is working at cross purposes? In the process, students learn that civil discourse doesn’t always mean agreement.

grading gives feedback to students based on the ten skills from the Portrait of a Derryfield Graduate. For example, a student might receive a grade on their lab report in Chemistry in terms of the clarity of their communication, the depth of their research, and the quality of their critical thinking in their explanation of the experiment rather than a single “A-F” grade. This means that student gradebooks reflect progress in skills rather than simply which types of assignments a student excels at. This transformation is powerful because it allows students to get more actionable feedback that supports their growth.

Derryfield has also made certain our grades remain clear and simple both for our families and for college admissions officers. For this reason, portrait-based grading at Derryfield results in a traditional “A-F” grade for each course. In short, students receive all the benefits of a skill-oriented approach to feedback without the drawback of a confusing report card or transcript.

Why Portrait-Based Grading?

The School made the decision to move toward portraitbased grading because it provides the best possible feedback for students to encourage their skill growth and it allows Derryfield to more fundamentally emphasize the 21st century skills we know students need for their future workplaces.

Most importantly, portrait-based grading provides better feedback for a student on each assignment. Imagine a student taking a test in mathematics. The student earns a “C+” on the test in a traditional grading model. This grade sends the message to the student that they are poor at taking tests. Perhaps the student might think, “I should study more next time,” but maybe the problem is not that the student doesn’t understand the underlying mathematical concepts, but that they are making computation errors and much of that study time will be wasted. Imagine, instead, that the student receives two

discrete grades at the top of their test. The student gets an “A-” in Discipline Content and a “C-” in Problem Solving.

Now, the grade is communicating something more specific to the student. The student understands that they have a solid foundation in the fundamental mathematical concepts being assessed on the test (Discipline Content), but they are struggling with the actual computation and application of that knowledge (Problem Solving). Now, the student knows precisely what to practice as they prepare for the next assessment. Portrait-based grading gives the student feedback about specific skills being assessed rather than in terms of the yardsticks we use to measure those skills.

More broadly, the development of the new Portrait of a Derryfield Graduate defined ten skills that we believe represent what it means to be successful in the 21st Century. We want to help students understand how these skills are practiced and nurtured daily. Therefore, we believe teachers should report grades using language that helps students see the connections between their various courses and their full Derryfield experience, from the classroom to the field and stage.

This is the promise of portrait-based grading at Derryfield.

It will preserve the best of what works in the Derryfield program while highlighting for students the key skills that they will need in the 21st century world. As pilot programs continue over the course of this year, Derryfield faculty will learn much about how to best support our students’ learning. Stay tuned for an update this summer about the progress of this 21st century academic program.

Course: Understanding Connections in Earth, Life and Physical Science Activity: Bear Brook Orienteering In the late winter, hardy faculty & staff volunteers take the entire seventh grade to Bear Brook State Park. When they arrive, he gives each group of students a compass and a map, and their only directive: “Starting here, get to the pond on this map.” This challenges students to identify and understand their own strengths, and those of others. Who will be the navigator in the group? What about the notetaker? Who will be the “trackologist” looking for animal tracks along the way? Who will be in charge of first aid, water, etc.?

Without any help from their chaperones, the students need to advocate for themselves, work together to accomplish their individual goals, and find their way to the pond, where they are rewarded with delicious s’mores.

The 10 components grading are: Belonging, Civil Discourse, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Portraitofofportrait-based A Derryfield Graduate Critical Thinking, Cultural Awareness, Problem Solving, Research, and Self-Advocacy.

Art Transcends Chaos Real-World Learning Elaine Loft Staff Writer

A

round the Derryfield campus, “Riots” is somewhat of a legendary history class. Officially titled “Riots, Revolutions and Reforms,” the course description reads: Modern world history is a story of riots, revolutions and reforms. This course explores this history by examining revolutionary events in Europe and Latin America from the 17th through the 20th centuries. First charting those ideas with the overthrow of Louis XVI in the French Revolution and the rise of Toussaint Louverture in Haiti, the course asks students to grapple with the power of ideology as an agent of historical change. Dr. Brandon Gauthier is the lead instructor of this course, with history faculty Taylor Fitzgerald and Christopher Russell teaching other sections.

A Window Into Another World Dr. Gauthier assiduously searches the internet to find video clips to illuminate and illustrate all his class lessons.

Several years ago, while hunting for footage of the chaos that has enveloped Haiti, he stumbled upon numerous YouTube postings including a Haitian journalist and guide named Sean Roubens. Dr. Gauthier tracked down contact information for Roubens, and arranged for him to participate in a virtual Q&A with the Riots class. Gauthier elaborated, “I was trying to find someone who was giving a true picture of the situation in Haiti, without resorting to sensationalism. Sean struck me as someone who could share interesting, true stories, and add value to the class.

Although Sean provides a very candid picture of the chaos, he also endeavors to convey that outside of Port-au-Prince everyday life proceeds for the majority of Haitians, in a country that is as renowned for its beauty as it is for its calamities.”

An Idea Takes Shape Last fall, the Riots class viewed several YouTube videos featuring Roubens, including a segment with local artist Joseph Jolio, who once made a living selling his vivid, representational paintings. Bill Zhang ’27, a student in the class, tells what happened next: “Though a renowned artist who has published several books on Haitian art traditions, dire security circumstances have forced him to live in an abandoned building overlooking Port-au-Prince. At that point, one of us—we’re not sure we remember who—suggested that we should see if we could buy some of Joseph’s paintings through Sean.

It became our class mission to obtain a piece of Haitian culture for our classroom.”

The Riots class patiently awaited the arrival of the artwork. But November turned to December, and winter turned to spring, and still the paintings did not make their appearance at Derryfield. Dr. Gauthier had some doubts, but he kept up a steady correspondence with Roubens, who confirmed that the paintings were still scheduled to be on board when the next FedEx flight took off. Seeking reassurance, Gauthier and Taylor Fitzgerald sleuthed the internet, and managed to find a phone number for the FedEx ‘office’ at the airport. To their total amazement, someone on the other end picked up the phone, and confirmed that two parcels were indeed awaiting shipment, as soon as the gangs stop shooting at our planes.

Arrival and Celebration

Wait and See Dr. Gauthier made arrangements through the Derryfield Business Office to wire money to Joseph Jolio. Sean and Joseph carefully crated the paintings for shipment out of Haiti. Maddy Solso ’27 picks up the next part of the story: “Although Sean brought the paintings to the local FedEx office in Haiti to ship them to New Hampshire, he unfortunately learned that all of the FedEx shipments in and out of Haiti were shut down due to frequent gunfire at planes. Dr. G and Mr. Fitz called the Port-au-Prince FedEx offices to see if arrangements could be made to ship the packages immediately, but this was to no avail, as the situation was rapidly deteriorating.”

On October 27, students from the Riots class shared with the school the saga that had commenced nearly a year earlier. Samhitha Maradapu ’27 and Maddy Solso ’27 summarized what their class learned from this experience.

“This experience serves to remind all of us that the things we are learning in the classroom are not abstract concepts. What we are learning about— ideas, cultures, and experiences—apply to real people’s lives.”

Joseph Jolio’s paintings were featured in an exhibit at the Lyceum Gallery. Curated by Joe Acone, Chair of the Arts & Design Department, "Echoes of Port-au-Prince" ran from November through December, 2025.

Highlights & Shout-Outs

Athletics

Two longtime Derryfield coaches, Ed Lemire and Jeff Cousineau, were honored this fall for their dedication and service. Prior to his retirement, Lemire devoted 39 years to DS, as both a math teacher and coach of the varsity girls’ basketball team. He was inducted into the NH Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame on October 25, 2025. Ed continues to coach Derryfield's middle school girls' basketball team.

Cousineau has served as an upper school science teacher and head varsity boys' soccer coach at Derryfield since 1997. He was inducted into the NH Interscholastic Athletic Association Hall of Fame on November 16, 2025.

Dave Botsford ’93

Shifting Gears When Dave Botsford ’93 graduated from Derryfield and headed to upstate New York to attend Ithaca College, he initially planned to major in a pre-med discipline, as the son of a physician and as a student who enjoyed science and “understood medicine as a helping field.” After taking several of the pre-med classes, he “quickly realized that it wasn’t really me,” and a freshman year psychology seminar helped him change directions. But it was during his junior year, when a friend convinced him to register for a sport psychology class, that Botsford began to glimpse his path.

“Fortunately at the same time,” Ithaca was about to open a master’s program in sport psychology, and so during his senior year, Botsford “talked his way into” a master’s level class, which led to him heading west after graduation to pursue his master’s in sport psychology, and serve as a teaching assistant at the University of Utah.

In discussing the growth of sport psychology into more of a mainstream topic in athletics, Botsford is quick to note and explain that the move into the limelight for his profession has also created

potential for confusion, most importantly in differentiating between sport psychology consulting versus mental health counseling with athletes. Sport psychology consulting entails “helping athletes understand the psychological aspects of performance and competition,” whereas mental health counseling with athletes treats athletes for many things like eating disorders, depression, trauma, and other matters.

The help Botsford’s clients seek from him can range from looking to return from injury, to making the jump to the next level of their sport or competition.

Botsford, through his many years studying at the University of Utah and later at the University of Oklahoma, is both a sport psychology consultant and a licensed mental health clinician, which he “did deliberately, so I could be as well-rounded and capable of providing services as possible and be competitive for a position at a Division I school.”

In thinking about current Derryfield students or recent graduates who may be interested in pursuing a career in sport psychology, Botsford has plenty of advice, urging one to ask questions and explore, while noting that he had a “circuitous and long path academically.”

In 2015, he joined the athletics department at the University of California-Santa Barbara as a clinical and sport psychologist, and worked as the only member of the athletic department serving over 500 athletes across all of their 20+ programs, where he provided mental health services and performancerelated consulting.

After seven years at UCSB and with a young family, Botsford moved into private practice, to better fit his busy personal schedule, and to serve a broader range of clients.

He still works with athletes from UCSB, but also meets with students from another area college, a local community college, plus a number of youth athletes competing at an elite club level in sports like water polo, swimming, soccer, and basketball.

Speaking specifically about youth athletes and what he sees as some of the biggest challenges facing them in the current day, Botsford talks of “identity” and its connection to athletics and particularly, the level of achievement that a young athlete may reach. He says, “We are a very achievement-driven society…but regardless of how good you are, or how many records you break, or how many championships you win, it’s really important to make sure that you are not your performance, that the individual is separate from the competitor.”

But perhaps most importantly, he emphasizes that although it might not be easy, one shouldn’t fear changing directions or shifting gears from their intended field of study or profession, or even sport. Having worked with numerous athletes who may have decided midway through their college career that they want to take a step back from their sport, or who may be contemplating life after college and after their sport, his words to them were “it’s not a loss; you’re not quitting or giving up.

You’re choosing something else.”

The account was born out of a simple question: How can we make the vitality of the arts more visible?

While concerts, exhibitions, plays, and robotics competitions offer polished culminating experiences, so much of the story happens long before the public ever sees the final product. Our vision for this account is to highlight those unseen moments—the experiments, the collaborations, the sparks of imagination—that define the creative journey.

Ultimately, @derryfieldarts is about connection. It connects our students’ work to a wider audience, our parents to the daily rhythm of the program, and our community to the larger conversation about why the arts matter. The Upper School Play, which ran November 6-7, was Radium Girls. A two-act production written by D.W. Gregory, it is a historical drama based on the true story of the young women who painted luminous watch dials in the 1920s, and suffered from radium poisoning. We see the interplay and magic of these two values every day on Derryfield’s campus. In many small but meaningful ways, Derryfield students are given opportunity, agency, and encouragement, and then inspired to share their time and talent with the DS community and beyond. As we seek to inspire our entire DS community to live by these core values, we’re eager to share the following stories as highlights of the experience.

How one letter changed two lives Every summer, Derryfield students participate in a reading project, with books assigned according to grade levels. In the fall, students met in small groups to discuss and “digest” these community reads, and then will revisit them throughout the school year with author visits, speakers and programs, and with classroom activities.

This year the theme of the summer reading program was “Reaching Across Divides.” The middle school students read I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives, by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda (with Liz Welch). It is a true story about how two pen pals—one a girl from the U.S., the other a boy from Zimbabwe— who seemingly have little in common, become best friends. Some of the questions the Derryfield middle school students were asked to consider were: What misunderstandings or barriers do Caitlin and Martin encounter as they get to know each other? Martin and

Caitlin’s lives were so different; what do you think enabled them to connect and form such a deep bond?

On October 6, author Caitlin Alifirenka spoke to the entire school in a Community Meeting.

Alifirenka’s presentation was second in the annual series of Community Enrichment Programming at Derryfield, which is supported by the IsakovichCritz Family. Head of School Andy Chappell opened the meeting by reminding the audience that “we need to look beyond our own lives.”

The audience sat in rapt attention as Alifirenka gave a lively account of her relationship with Martin Ganda—from their first letters, to their current lives. Alifirenka worked the stage, telling of how her connection with “my best friend, who lived 10,000 miles away” grew and changed over the years.

Caitlin Alifirenka spent the day interacting with Derryfield students, reinforcing her message of kindness and connection. She chatted with both middle and upper schoolers over lunch in The Commons, and visited sixth grade English and geography classes to offer tips about being a good pen pal as they launch their own letter-writing projects.

“I was a typical American middle school student—I cared more about my friends and social life than the outside world. I never really thought outside my bubble of my hometown of Hatfield, Pennsylvania. Although I had traveled a lot with my family, I really knew nothing about the world. I had no idea that by choosing to go outside my comfort zone, by choosing to be pen pals with someone in Zimbabwe, my life would be changed forever.”

At first Alifirenka and Ganda shared typical teenage stories, connecting most closely over music, like The Spice Girls. As their correspondence continued, Alifirenka came to learn more specific details about Ganda’s life, including the fact that his family shared a small, one-room dwelling with another family, food was sparse, water had to be fetched from far away, and unlike Alifirenka, Ganda’s family had very few possessions.

When Ganda’s father lost his job at a paper company,

and Martin and his siblings had to drop out of school, Alifrenka enlisted her own family to help the Ganda family survive.

Eventually Martin Ganda, “the smartest boy, ever, in his village,” came to the United States to attend Villanova University on a full scholarship, earning dual degrees in mathematics and economics. He later earned an MBA at Duke University. Caitlin Alifirenka, an emergency room RN, now married with a family of her own, and Martin Ganda, an accomplished entrepreneur, consider one another family.

Alifirenka offered a final message to the Derryfield audience, “One act of kindness changed the course of Martin’s life. Kindness starts within your own community, and kindness spreads.” derryfield.org

ELEVATED CORE VALUES: INDIVIDUALITY & COMMUNITY

I

n 2024, alumni parents Dr. Kristina Isakovich and Richard Critz (Patrick ’15 and Tyler ’20), created the Isakovich-Critz Community Enrichment Initiative, the purpose of which is to bring distinguished lecturers, scholars, scientists, mathematicians, writers, and performers to visit Derryfield for school community meetings and classroom visits. In the 2025-26 academic year, the initiative will fund eight guest speakers, and numerous other projects. On September 15, graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang was the first presenter in the series.

Yang writes, and sometimes draws, comic books and graphic novels. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. In 2016, he was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow.

Reading without walls The theme of Derryfield’s summer 2025 reading program was “Reaching Across Divides,” and a major focus of Yang’s work is encouraging young people to read widely across genres in a way that gets them out of their comfort zones. He spoke to the Derryfield audience about his experience with reading, and described the work of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, who pioneered the idea that it is vital for all young readers to have the experience of seeing themselves, considering different perspectives, and stepping into the lives of others through literature. Yang elaborated, “Every reader in America needs two kinds of books—they need window books, that allow you to see into the lives of people who are different from you, and mirror books, that reflect your own experience back to you. Window books allow us to love our neighbor, and mirror books allow us to love ourselves.”

When Yang was National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature (2016-17), touring the country speaking to young readers, he incorporated Bishop’s ideas into his own platform. The central theme of his presentations was “reading without walls,” explaining that “reading without walls is a way of emphasizing that books can act like both mirrors or windows.” Yang went on to issue a challenge to the Derryfield audience.

“Set a due date for yourself, and by the end of that due date try to accomplish one of three things: read a book about a character that doesn’t look like you or think like you, or read a book about a topic you know nothing about, or read a book in a format you don’t normally read for fun. If you really want to go for the gold, find a book that fits all three criteria.”

Yang inscribing books for young readers

The Art of the Graphic Novel In addition to his presentation at Community Meeting, Yang offered a lunchtime workshop on “Making Comics,” which included a presentation about his process, beginning to end, of creating a graphic novel. He led an activity where the students drew characters, and created a backstory for them. The group was invited to pitch ideas for a larger narrative/ conflict. At the end of the day Yang worked with the entire eighth grade who were in the midst of reading his book American Born Chinese as part of the English curriculum. He delved into the structure of his book, which blend's storylines of a contemporary ChineseAmerican teenager with tales of the Monkey King Chinese folklore. Yang fielded many questions from the group, and demonstrated how he draws the characters.

Go Teach & Learn!

“Go Teach & Learn” is the charge as Breakthrough middle school Scholars and college-aged Teaching Fellows depart Derryfield’s McIninch Room to launch each summer morning.

Fueled with breakfast and energized by morning cheers, they begin their core academic classes in literature, math, science, and writing. With three and a half decades of a unique, proven studentsteaching-students dual mission, Breakthrough is a leader in educational equity and access. Breakthrough removes barriers and offers educational experiences to empower scholars traditionally underrepresented on college campuses to achieve postsecondary success.

Breakthrough also trains aspiring high school and

college-aged leaders as future educators, thereby strengthening and diversifying the teacher pipeline.

Everyone is a teacher and a learner at Breakthrough! BTM fills in gaps from the previous school year, while ensuring scholars are set up for success in the year ahead. Collegeaged Teaching Fellows make learning fun, adding creative twists to their lesson plans to engage near-peer Scholars.

Some summer highlights from Breakthrough’s 34th summer include: reating a human number • Cline in seventh grade

algebra, to help them understand the placement of rational numbers.

Scholars practiced fraction simplification, square roots, and identified positive and negative numbers to determine their place on the number line while strengthening group dynamics through communication, collaboration, and social skills.

• Using M&Ms in chemistry

to identify the difference between a solvent and a solute. Students created hypotheses and procedures to determine that water was the solvent, and M&Ms the solute.

eighth graders to grapple with how the Younger family should invest an insurance payout. They participated in their first debate, which helped them articulate ideas, build confidence in public speaking, and formulate constructive arguments to support their positions.

College is woven throughout each Breakthrough summer. Scholars and Teaching Fellows compete on six college teams. Siblings Share a Breakthrough Summer Breakthrough is known for its “staying power.” This summer, eight Breakthrough Scholar alumni joined us as Teaching Fellows, two as Program Assistants, and one as our interim Program Director. Of these, six had siblings who were Breakthrough Scholars. These six sets of siblings truly lived both sides of Breakthrough’s studentsteaching-students mission.

“Over the summer, I was given the opportunity to complete a full circle moment with Breakthrough Manchester, coming back for a summer as a 7th-grade Teaching Fellow.

My youngest sister entered as a 7th grader. I got to live the real students-teachingstudents experience this summer as I navigated the challenges and successes of being a first-time TF with no prior teaching experience. Having my sister in the program at the same time allowed me to better support her at home and give her additional resources to be able to complete her academic work, which was rewarding for me as a teacher, mentor, and older sibling. Doing the talent show with my sister helped us connect more with each other at home and with our culture, and being able to share that with the community at Breakthrough was one of my favorite parts this summer.”

Connor Bradley ’26 As the all-school president, how do you gather feedback from your classmates?

Gathering feedback, whether it be positive or constructive, is one of the most vital aspects of any leadership role. One of the junior class presidents and I recognize this priority and have created anonymous feedback forms, hosted open check-in sessions, and regularly encourage feedback of any form. One of the most important things I have learned is that, no matter whether there is feedback to be given or not, granting the opportunity for transparency and feedback creates a trusting and constructive environment between leaders and peers.

Alongside physical opportunities for feedback, displaying traits that encourage this feedback, such as honesty, humbleness, and respect, have been crucial to my role.

To me, leadership means empathy. Leadership is about having the ability to relate and connect with people for the purpose of empowering and inspiring others. The best leaders do not wish to lead, they wish to serve.

They wish to serve the people around them with compassion and empathy because leadership is not a title, it is a behavior.

Kelsey Beekman ’27 As the Junior Class President, what’s the most challenging part of your leadership?

As a junior Class President and member of the Student Council, the most challenging aspect of my role is managing a balance between advocating for student voice and understanding the administrative process. As a class leader, I am fortunate to represent the passionate ideas and perspectives that my peers offer.

However, not all of those ideas are possible to execute due to a variety of reasons. Therefore, I must represent all student voices equitably and effectively whilst communicating back to my peers about why or why not a proposal is possible. Maintaining this balance and considering all sides of an issue has been crucial in the proposal process in a variety of instances.

T LEAD Now in its tenth year, the Derryfield Student Leadership Program continues to align with the school’s mission to inspire purposeful engagement in community life. Over the years, the program has evolved, and is now experiencing marked growth. Recent data reflects this positive trajectory: 90% of Upper School students agree that the school supports their leadership development— up from 85% in 2022–23.

Directed by Dr. Reina Stimpson, director of student leadership, in close partnership with both division heads, the program works to unify all leadership curriculum in collaboration with Courtney Cheetham, department chair of LEAD (Leadership Ethics And Development). Derryfield provides comprehensive training and mentorship to both students and adults, ensuring the continued strength of its robust student leadership programming.

Looking ahead, Stimpson will focus on deepening peer mentorship programming with Mary Perkins, Coordinator of the PACTeam, and expanding athletic captainship programming in partnership with Chris Hettler, Director of Athletics, and ensure consistent meetings with all student groups. This commitment to continued growth is a central element of the school’s updated strategic plan, under the strategic initiative “Peer Leadership.”

Philosophy & Definition The program philosophy asserts that every student can be a leader and should learn what successful 21st leadership looks like. Student leaders are compassionate young people who want to help improve their school community or other communities and lead by example. Student leaders can be elected or non-elected. Many students demonstrate leadership through class presentations or event facilitation without holding an official title. Students can and should have the ability to practice leading either within the school day or at local or regional conferences.

Derryfield promotes student voice and agency. Recent highlights include student presentations at the Waynflete Youth Identity Summit and annual NEASC conference, featuring both elected and non-elected leaders.

Key School Elements Through careful research of successful student leadership programs, Stimpson, who completed her doctoral study

on this topic in 2024, determined the most important leadership traits were critical awareness, inclusivity and positivity. Stimpson also found this demonstrates the critical element of reflective revisions, the best practice for a successful school leadership program.

Program Structure In each division, Derryfield has dedicated time for training, consistent regular meetings and skill practice within the school day. Each major student leadership group has adult mentors. All groups have access to support, training and mentorship through the director of student leadership.

Annual Student Leadership Summit During the annual Student Leadership Summit in August, 85 student leaders from various groups participated in workshops on trust building. Essential to the student leadership program is asking students to be reflective.

When asked what builds trust in groups, students most often associate trust-building with honest communication, empathy, respect, inclusion, positivity, and accountability.

When asked what has eroded trust working in groups, teams or group projects students most often said dishonesty, exclusion, poor communication, selfishness, negativity, and manipulation.

Strong Interpersonal Relationships & Collegiality with Staff and Teachers Adults need to be aware of their own role to mentor student leaders in various ways. Faculty and staff play a critical role in encouraging students and helping them to reframe any setbacks, and point them to mentors and opportunities. Adults must be able to give critical feedback while students are taking positive risks to lead.

Although not all adults have a framework for allowing students to lead, and may even feel a sense of turbulence through these undertakings, all adults should be able to embrace and allow for students to step up and give them choices and ways to have voice in the processes of school.

This practice of student voice can be messy at times; adults can work with the director of student leadership to help get guidance on how to allow for choice and voice, when the student shows interest. All adults and school leaders must help students build agency and recognize that we need to learn from the students and their experiences. In fact, research shows that adults and students should listen, learn, and lead together. derryfield.org

Looking Ahead

The conversations around future trends—from the role of AI in education to global sustainability—that began with the Board last year have now been woven into the fabric of our new strategic vision, Rooted in Tradition, Reaching Toward Tomorrow. This plan is a testament to our commitment to innovation, student well-being, and strengthening our community connections. This fall, we launched four of the new plan’s initiatives, which focus on: long-term financial sustainability; professional development; a peer leadership program; and AI and digital tools. We are excited to see this vision unfold, and will share more details on the plan’s key pillars in the coming months.

NEW MEMBERS Daniel Cohen CFP® Daniel Cohen is a native of Framingham, Massachusetts and earned a BS in business administration from Boston University with concentrations in finance and accounting. In 2013, he founded Cohen Investment Advisors and Cohen Real Estate Advisors, which provides financial planning and investment management to individuals and their families throughout the country and internationally.

Cohen brings a breadth of experience to his role. He has served on the

board of The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Manchester for 15 years.

He also served on the board of the Jewish Federation of New Hampshire for a decade, two years as chairman, and is currently on the Jewish Federation Foundation board.

Cohen lives in Bedford, New Hampshire with his wife Tiffany, and their four children. They enjoy hiking throughout the state, as well as domestic and international travel.

Their children are Skylar ‘23, Flynn ‘27, William ‘30, and Arabella (grade 3).

Gigi Georges Oxman, PhD

Georges Oxman and Jeff live in Bedford, New Hampshire, with their daughter, Margaux (Mara), who is an enthusiastic member of the Derryfield class of 2030.

Kayla Sirkin ʼ06

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Gigi Georges Oxman received her BA in history magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Wellesley College, and her master's and PhD degrees in public administration from Princeton University and New York University, respectively. Georges Oxman is an author and visiting professor at Boston College.

Georges Oxman has had an extensive career in politics, public service, and academia, and has contributed significantly to the fields of social and education policy. In 2008, while completing her doctorate, Georges Oxman and her husband Jeff relocated to Boston. After a stint as program director at the Kennedy School’s Ash Institute of Innovation and Governance, she taught political science at Boston College as a visiting professor for six years, and has recently returned to teaching there.

Sirkin moved to Somerville, MA in 2017, and a year later went to work for Richline Group. She was the general manager of the digital division of Richline, growing their direct-to-consumer jewelry brands.

Sirkin stepped away from her role at Richline mid 2024 to focus on her family, and to explore other self employment career opportunities.

Sirkin lives in Somerville, MA with her husband Jesse and her two girls Ari (6) and Chloe (3). She has a strong love for Derryfield and a deep family history with the School.

Her mother, Joni Taube, was class of ʼ69 and her sister Jenna Sirkin and brother-in-law Rampal Chopra graduated in ʼ00.

Call for Nominations Kayla Sirkin, a native of Bedford, New Hampshire, attended The Derryfield School for middle and high school, graduating in 2006. She received her BA magna cum laude from Brandeis University, majoring in sociology and minoring in Spanish and women and gender studies. During college, she worked for a start up tech company and for Microsoft, which kicked off her marketing career.

ALUMNI NEWS Nathan Richer ʼ19 and Matthew Michaud ʼ19

The Derryfield Difference Richer and Michaud credit Derryfield with giving them the foundation and confidence to pursue unconventional creative careers. Richer specifically remembers music teacher Rob Fogg, who pulled them aside in eighth grade to encourage them to perform, despite their stage fright.

A Partnership in Harmony: Richer and Michaud's Creative Journey

When Nathan Richer ’19 and Matthew Michaud ’19 first performed together at a Middle School Happening in eighth grade, things didn't go according to plan. Michaud had a panic attack and had to restart the song three times. When they finally made it through, the applause was overwhelming.

"What could've broken my passion for performing became a crux of who I am, and that's thanks to Derryfield," Michaud recalls. "Eleven years later, I'm still performing with the same guy who saw me fail, and picked me back up."

That eighth-grade performance launched a creative partnership that continues to this day. Richer and Michaud have formed multiple bands, recorded albums, and most recently, collaborated on directing a music video that brought them face-to-face with American literary history.

"It's funny," Michaud reflects. "In eighth grade at Derryfield, I started making videos and writing songs with Nate. What I'm doing now isn't much different than what I did then. The only difference now is, I pay rent."

Different Paths, Same Passion After graduating from Derryfield in 2019, Richer and Michaud pursued complementary educations. Richer attended UMass Lowell for a music degree with a concentration in sound recording technology, while Michaud studied film and television at Boston University before earning his master's at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

Today, their careers reflect the diverse skill sets they've built. Richer juggles a full-time audio/visual installation job alongside part-time work as a talent buyer, freelance music marketer, social media manager, music video producer, and audio engineer. He also writes and releases music in three bands.

Michaud works in the art department on high-budget productions—most recently wrapping on an Apple TV show in Massachusetts—while also writing and directing music videos, documentaries, and branded content.

And yes, he still makes music with Richer in their band, Ron's Car.

"That eighth grade performance at Derryfield changed the direction of my life," Richer says. "It showed me that music and performing are something that I can do. The anxiety around performing hasn't fully gone away to this day, but I play a gig almost every weekend now, and it is my favorite thing in the world."

Michaud emphasizes how Derryfield teachers gave students opportunities to express their creativity across the curriculum. He recalls teachers suggesting: "Write a paper on the Russian Revolution? How about you craft a sketch and act it out instead?"

"These opportunities, without a doubt, illuminated the way to a career that was the perfect fit to who I am," he notes. Perhaps more importantly, Derryfield provided a safe space. "Derryfield gave me opportunities to try and then fail— and fail safely," Michaud adds.

A Return to Rocking Horse The path that led them to direct a music video about Jack Kerouac began with Nathan's Independent Study Project (ISP) at Rocking Horse Studio in Pittsfield, NH. During that experience, studio owner Brian Coombes—husband of Mimi Coombes, DS Middle School Mathematics Department—told

Richer to reach out if his band ever wanted to record in the future.

Three years later, Richer's punk rock/ grunge band Burp took Brian up on that offer, recording their debut album at Rocking Horse.

The album helped them play venues like Brighton Music Hall and sell out shows at the Middle East in Cambridge.

Their next project deepened the connection. During COVID, Richer and Michaud were living together, working at a restaurant, and writing music in their free time. A customer became interested in their music, booked them for a performance, and eventually offered to fund a full album for Ron's Car. Richer immediately called Coombes to book studio time. The duo and their musician friends spent a marathon weekend recording 15 songs in four days—a timeline that initially made Coombes and his colleague Josh Kimball shake their heads in disbelief. But by Sunday evening, they had accomplished their goal. The album, Whatever, has been nominated for Album of the Year in this year’s New England Music Awards.

From Recording to Directing Through their multiple visits to Rocking Horse, Coombes learned about Richer's passion for music marketing and video production, as well as Michaud's filmmaking background. When Coombes mentioned his project adapting Jack Kerouac's unfinished novella "The Haunted Life" into a concept album for his band Rocking Horse Music Club, he invited them to pitch music video ideas.

After considering multiple concepts, Richer, Michaud, and producer Coombes settled on a period piece for the song “The Haunted Life,”

"I had no idea how to direct this video," Michaud admits, citing a recent quote from Francis Ford Coppola: "When you don't know how to make a movie, if you listen really closely, the movie will tell you how."

answers that reflect their creative spirits. Richer's response was characteristically straightforward: "I will be pursuing my dreams. I don't know what that will entail or consist of, but I know that is exactly what I will be doing."

That philosophy led to some of their best moments. Richer discovered a museum in Lowell from the 1930s-40s era that was preserved in near-original condition. When they called about filming, they were told the museum couldn't legally stop them if they bought tickets.

When Michaud arrived, staff not only welcomed them but turned on all the machines and helped set up period-appropriate shots.

Michaud hopes to continue doing exactly what he's doing now— working for himself with new clients, making music with Richer, and exploring new creative projects. "If I can continue to pay my rent doing what I love with the people I love, then I'm the luckiest man on earth," he says. His ultimate dream for the next decade? To write a feature film.

Another favorite sequence came after a brutal day of filming kept getting interrupted by rain. On their way home, a spontaneous decision to check out a trail led them to the perfect location for the video's ending—shots of the Kerouac actor walking along a foggy Merrimack river at night.

As they continue to collaborate, Richer and Michaud carry forward the lessons learned on that Derryfield stage in eighth grade: that creativity requires courage, that failure is part of the process, and that the best work often comes from pursuing your passions with people who believe in you.

The video, released in June 2025, has been nominated for Video of the Year in this year’s New England Music Awards.

Their journey from nervous middle schoolers to directors trusted by a legendary American author's estate is a testament to what happens when talented individuals support each other's growth—and when a school gives students the freedom to try, fail, and try again.

ALUMNI PROFILES

Devin Walker ʼ11

Engineering Patents, Skateboarding, and Grafitti…Oh My! Sometimes an alumni’s social media posts catch your eye, as did Devin Walker’s Instagram page when he began posting his graffiti art. But let’s begin at the beginning. Devin Walker entered Derryfield in fall of 2007 in grade nine, and wasted no time taking advantage of everything that Derryfield had to offer. In fact, as Walker reflects on his life’s twists and turns, he says the requirements of Derryfield’s full program were critical to his lifelong learning, his health, and his ability to pivot and adapt when things didn't go as planned.

In fact, some of Walker’s best advice to Derryfield students is tied to all of the opportunities that Derryfield offers, and how it will pay off down the road. “I came away from Derryfield with a very advanced knowledge of the basics I needed to go through college. But the real extra value was all the other pieces that made me more wellrounded, like participating in arts and athletics…I was not an athlete…what I learned through trying cross-country running was that a daily exercise routine has been really important for my mental and physical health.” Post-Derryfield, Walker attended University of Vermont for engineering, and for the skateboarding scene, where he pursued some professional skateboarding opportunities. A series of injuries eventually forced him to quit skateboarding, but with his commitment to exercise firmly rooted, he turned to cycling.

And where is he now? As an electrical engineer (audio and batteries matter expert) at Simplisafe, Walker is embedded in a career that utilises the skills and interests he knew he possessed when he was quite young.

In fact, he obtained an electrical engineering license at the age of 12.

Walker also credits his experiences with theater tech at DS, working the soundboard for plays and community meetings, leading to his knowledge of audio and battery subsystems. While he was hired at SimpliSafe originally as a generalist, Walker kept bringing the knowledge and expertise gained through those formative experiences at and beyond Derryfield, which

ultimately led to the creation of his very specific position. His audio system development at SimpliSafe has allowed him to work on new products, and ultimately to receive a combination of five total utility and design patents. The utility patents are about novel concepts or logic, whereas the design patents are about the look or feel of a product. Walker has a preference for utility patents which are just “more interesting.”

Just when you think he can’t become more multifaceted, you learn about Walker’s involvement in the arts.

He and his girlfriend regularly (legally) paint on Graffiti Alley in Cambridge, MA. Walker displays their creations on his Instagram page, and has played around with artificial intelligence to animate stills of the final artwork. He also intentionally cultivates a social “third space,” by inviting musician friends to his apartment–fully outifitted for recording–a couple of times a week.

He recognizes this opportunity as critical to his social life, “It’s more of an excuse for us to see each other, but we have a common creative interest and we’ve been gathering for seven or eight years now…it’s fun being the gathering point for these friends.”

He’s only thirty-two years old, but Devin Walker recognizes the benefit of having opened many doors in his younger years, and how, even if those pursuits didn’t flourish at the time, they have frequently resurfaced as his life has unfolded: “Exposure to different activities and experiences will direct you later in life. For me, choosing to cultivate that wellrounded perspective has made me a more adaptable person, able to handle adversity, and find new directions.”

Elizabeth Blake ʼ75

engagement. They showed me how to learn. This was a skill that would prove to be invaluable throughout my life.

I was the only girl who was enrolled in both calculus and physics at the same time, because I wanted to take every class. One day, when I was sitting in the cafeteria during a free period, Mr. Bailey came by and asked me if I would consider being a TA (teacher’s assistant) for his freshman biology class. I thought I was in heaven–I loved being given the responsibility of sitting in his little office, facing out into the hallway, grading tests.”

From the Classroom to the Show Ring For many, the path after high school is a straight line, but for Elizabeth Blake ’75 , her journey has been a winding road guided by two unwavering passions: education and dogs. A former teacher and a lifelong dog breeder, Blake’s story is a testament to the power of following your heart, and the surprising ways that seemingly different worlds can converge.

The Seed of a Calling From a young age, Blake’s career aspirations were “all about medicine.”

She spent her free time volunteering at a local animal shelter, and as a candy striper at the local hospital.

She eventually decided she would become a veterinarian, based upon her love of horses, then show dogs.

Blake’s interactions with several of her DS teachers were instrumental in shaping her future.

“Mr. Bailey (who taught science) and Mr. Holland (who taught English) were so engaging–they truly loved kids. They were not talking heads at the front of the room. There was a depth to their dedication and

That experience was a pivotal moment, showing her the joy of teaching and the power of engaging with students.

A New Direction When Blake got to Wells College, she was well prepared for all the science and math courses, but an English course in the spring of her freshman year opened her mind to new options.

“The upper level course I chose (I had tested out of freshman English) introduced me to a wide array of poetry and essays, and required a lot of writing. The discussions were so rich–the teacher brought many wellknown poets to campus. I sat there just enthralled. I was encouraged by my tennis coach, who also taught English, to consider a change in majors.”

After a year abroad in Scotland, she transferred to Brown University, where she pursued an MAT, graduating in 1980. Blake began her teaching career at Hanover High School. She went on to teach in Pittsford, New York, before moving to Davis, California. There, she taught in a diverse agricultural community, overseeing the student newspaper and ensuring half the paper was written in Spanish to give the

Hispanic community a voice. “I made sure they had ownership,” she says.

“Every single student, every single day, said something meaningful to me or the group.”

Later, Blake transitioned to a new high school with a tech-focused learning approach, which she found incredibly rewarding. "I learned to guide kids, but also let them guide themselves," she explained. Eventually, she moved to an independent learning program where she worked with students one-on-one. She quickly discovered that the so-called "challenging kids" were simply "kids facing challenges," a lesson she learned from her own teachers years earlier. In total, Blake’s teaching career spanned 37 years.

From Showing to Breeding Parallel to her role as an educator, another passion was flourishing. As a child, Blake’s family acquired a Border Terrier named Harry. At age 12, she was introduced to the world of dog shows by a family friend, a long-time Elkhound breeder.

Blake started showing Harry at dog “match” shows, where one can gain experience without the competition pressure of a regular show. "After I got my first pretty ribbon I was hooked!” she laughed.

Blake learned quickly, spending a year simply watching others compete. This patient approach paid off when she began winning with her new dog, a Lakeland Terrier named Laddy. In just three short years, she made it to the prestigious Westminster Junior Handling finals.

Blake has been a respected breeder of Border Terriers for 56 years.

When asked for an observation from her two, diverse careers, she said, “In both fields, it takes time to accumulate experience–and then you can begin to put your experience to work.” derryfield.org

ALUMNI PROFILES years, Duprey continued to work remotely and Emily became a stay-at-home parent for their now two children.

Thad Duprey ʼ04

Finding himself in Napa Had you asked Thad Duprey ’04 at his Derryfield graduation where he'd probably be in 20 years, owning a specialty wine shop with his wife Emily in Napa, California would probably have been near the bottom of the list. After numerous stops along the way, from cooking in Michelin-starred restaurants to working in startups, Duprey and his wife Emily purchased Outer Space Wines in Napa in 2024, which in Duprey’s words is a “dream job.”

At DS, Duprey joined the crew team where he met lifelong friends, including George Dirth ’04. Rowing propelled him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with Bachelor’s and Master's degrees. Duprey credits Derryfield for preparing him for an Ivy League institution, noting “I was a belowaverage student at Derryfield and was a great student at Penn, largely because Derryfield was that much harder than Penn was.”

During college, Duprey developed an interest in food and wine, exploring many restaurants and

In January 2024, after Duprey got laid off, he and Emily began to consider a different path for their family. “Emily was ready to go back to work and despite being at the point professionally with startups that it was a relatively easy job that paid well, I wanted to do something I was in love with again.” And so they started to think about opening a wine shop in the Portland area. cuisines around Philadelphia.

Through a chance connection, he headed to Napa during the summer following sophomore year to work on a vineyard, an experience that influences him even today. “I ended up with one of the most influential vignerons in Napa Valley, where I would wake up at 5 o’clock, get my butt handed to me working with his crew all day, come back exhausted, and he’d open up a ‘78 Burgundy for this kid he didn't know and who knew nothing.”

Of that summer, Duprey remarks, “it ended up being this pivotal moment, that kind of experience your life ends up hinging on, but you only recognize it later.”

Following college, Duprey served with Teach For America in Philadelphia, before beginning his culinary career. He made his way to Sweden and back to Boston, where he met Emily, who was the sommelier at the restaurant where he worked as a sous chef.

Duprey and Emily next found themselves in New York City where he worked in startups, beginning with Blue Apron. At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, with Emily soon to give birth to their first child, they headed to New Hampshire and later, Maine. Over the next several

On a trip to Napa that winter, they visited the place Thad had come on his very first night in Napa as a 20year old: a wine shop and bar called Outer Space Wines. Duprey had kept in touch with the owner, and that day “asked him ‘we’re thinking of opening a wine shop in Maine, do you have any advice?’ And he goes, ‘you should just buy this one.’ Fast forward a few months and we’re driving across the country to buy a little wine shop in Napa.”

“Despite the challenges of running a small business, it’s so gratifying to meet somebody who feels intimidated about wine and see the look on their face when they get it.”

Speaking of jumping into owning a small business, despite the risks, Duprey reflects upon his best friend from Derryfield, George Dirth ’04, who passed away in 2013, and after whom Duprey and Emily’s first child is named: “As kids we would go jump off big rocks into a lake. I would walk to the edge and back away, thinking ‘that’s really scary.’ Meanwhile, George would have jumped 20 times already because he would just go and do it.

That helped push me over the edge, thinking ‘what would George do?’

And now I just wish I’d done it sooner.”

This summer, I had the privilege of working as a haptics research assistant in Professor Ed Colgate's lab at Northwestern University.

I'm deeply grateful to Professor Michael Peshkin for connecting me with the lab, and to Oliver Sterling-Angus for being an incredible mentor throughout my experience.

Last weekend, I participated in my first hackathon at MHacks, and to be honest, I was nervous walking in. Everyone seemed to already have a team, an idea, or at least know what they were doing. I didn't, but I decided to show up anyway.

I won my first hackathon. solo.

Our project focuses on co-designing a robot hand and haptic control interface for remote teleoperation, enabling human operators to control robotic manipulators with real-time kinesthetic force feedback. This work is part of the broader HAND ERC initiative, a multi-university NSF research center dedicated to advancing high-dexterity robotic hands.

Over the course of hundreds of hours in Northwestern's machine shop, I honed my skills in precision machining while working with the lathe, manual/conversational mill, water jet, and a range of shop tools under the guidance of Northwestern's shop pros. Back in the lab, I developed components of the haptic interface that make it comfortable, durable, and manufacturable.

I'm excited to continue contributing to this project this fall, especially as I help train new undergraduate researchers joining the team. It's rewarding to be part of a team pushing the boundaries of human -robot interaction.

I worked solo on my project, Ventura, but throughout the event, I met incredible people. From solo hackers to teams of four who shared ideas, feedback, and encouragement. That sense of community kept me going when I was on the brink of giving up. ...

I submitted my demo, stayed till the end, and to my surprise won first place in the Overdrive (Optimization) track Was it easy? No. Was it worth it? Absolutely. ...

Sarah Umberger ’06 and husband James Camarda welcomed their son Carter William Camarda, into the world on April 16, 2025. In a fall ceremony, James and Sarah were married October 4 on Pine Mountain in Gorham, NH, overlooking Carter Dome and the Carter-Moriah trail. Sarah's mother (Leanne) officiated. Making it even more special, Mary Marciniak ’06 was present too!

Marty McCormick ’11 and Grace Alenson ’11 celebrated their marriage five years ago and have since been blessed with four wonderful children: James, Teddy, Barbara, and Rose. In Memoriam

“All of our lives they had impressed upon us, early and often, the importance of education.”

Frances "Fran" Mae Winneg, Derryfield School Founder, passed away on July 18, 2025 in her home in Dedham, Massachusetts. She was 94 years old.

Born in 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Dora and Benjamin Mallin, Fran graduated from high school, and went on to attend and graduate from Temple University. In December 1958, she married Richard Irwin Winneg. The couple later moved to Manchester, and then Bedford, NH, where they lived for over 50 years, raising a family and becoming deeply engaged in their community.

In addition to raising her three sons (Neal ’78, Bob ’81, and Doug ’85), Fran devoted herself to public service.

She was a leader in the Manchester Jewish community, serving as president of the board of the Jewish Federation of Manchester, and as chair of the Manchester Jewish

– Neal Winneg ’78, Son of Frances Mae Winneg

Community School Board. She also was a life member of Hadassa, and served as co-chair of the Women's Division of the Combined Jewish Appeal. She and Dick played key roles in establishing the Manchester Regional Foundation of the NH Charitable Foundation.

They were also among the founders of Derryfield. Fran shared with Head of School, Andy Chappell in 2022 that their $1,000 gift to help launch the School in 1964 was one of the best donations they ever made. Fran remained connected to Derryfield throughout her life, often attending Founders' Day celebrations, and taking joy in seeing how the School had grown and flourished.

In a 2023 interview, Fran shared, “Even though it would be many years before our son went to seventh grade, it was his future. We thought it would be a school that would be better for our children (than other options). We knew we would have a voice in shaping the school, and believed the school would be there for our children.”

Warm, gracious and determined, Fran Winneg will be remembered for her sweet smile, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to her family and community.

Garvin Warner, who served on the Derryfield Board of Trustees from 2018 through 2023, passed away on October 24, 2025 at the age of 69. During his time on the Board Garvin was a member of the Building and Grounds Committee. He cared deeply about equity and belonging, and providing access through financial aid.

Garvin graduated from Colgate University, where he discovered a passion for science. After working briefly for the U.S. Forest Service, he pursued his PhD in microbiology and immunology at Albany Medical College of Union University.

From there he joined the University of Rochester Cancer Center as a postdoctoral fellow and research assistant professor, and then transitioned into the biopharmaceutical world, holding key positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genetics Institute, Wyeth, Pfizer and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals.

In addition to his service to Derryfield, Garvin was a trustee at Hebron Academy, and helped design and build science classrooms at the Great Lake Regional University in Kanungu, Uganda. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Danny and Chloe ‘14; his daughter-in-law, Ashley; and his grandson, Wesley.

t Derryfield, philanthropy is not just a practice—it’s a culture. It’s the belief that we all have something to give: our time, our talent, and our treasure. Each year, the Cikacz Family Philanthropy Award honors individuals or families who embody that spirit and whose support has meaningfully advanced the life of our school.

This year, we were proud to recognize Michael Broad ’69 —a member of Derryfield’s very first graduating class and the school’s inaugural All-School President—for his extraordinary and enduring commitment to the Derryfield community. “Michael was someone who was thoughtful and had a good sense of humor,” recalls classmate Ellie Cochran ’69. “He was the perfect person to be the first All-School President.”

Michael’s connection to Derryfield runs deep, and his belief in the power of education has shaped both his life and his philanthropy. A passionate advocate for innovation in teaching and learning, Michael has long supported opportunities for Derryfield faculty to stretch, grow, and lead. Whether funding trips for faculty, to cutting-edge conferences or bringing transformative theater performances to campus, his generosity has consistently opened new doors for both educators and students.

In 2017, Michael established the Muriel and Edward Broad Endowment Fund for Excellence in Education, named in honor of his parents. The fund was created with an ambitious goal: to elevate Derryfield as a beacon of educational excellence and innovation—not just regionally, but nationally. Through this visionary endowment, Michael has helped to position Derryfield as a leader in shaping the future of learning—one that other schools aspire to collaborate with and learn from.

This year, Michael deepened his commitment by establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity, which will ultimately provide additional support to the Broad Endowment. His thoughtful planning ensures that his impact on teaching and learning at Derryfield will continue well into the future.

As Derryfield launches a new strategic plan with a focus on our people, it is especially fitting to honor someone who has done so much to invest in the educators at the heart of our mission. Michael’s legacy is not only in the initiatives he’s supported, but in the inspiration he offers to others to give back in meaningful ways.

Michael Broad has never stopped leading—not since his days as All-School President, and not today, as a visionary donor who believes in the transformative power of education and community. For his passion, generosity, and unwavering support, we are honored to present him with the 2025 Cikacz Family Philanthropy Award.
