Jon and Jenna ...one epic proposal

T

his year, on December 15 Jon proposed in the sweetest, most exciting way ...I never could have dreamed. Jon and I have been together for 3ish years. Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year, and for several years My friends and I have gone to the “rock n roll Christmas spectacular” at the Holmes theater in town. This year was no different. I bought six tickets for my group of girlfriends. We had already been to dinner and were now having the best time laughing and singing along with the show. The show pauses when Ted, the piano player came out with Santa and said they were switching things up. Ted went on about how the Holmes theater was going to give away a prize to one lucky ticket holder in the audience.

I was immediately excited as my friend sighed and said “you jerk! Your name is going to be entered 6 times since you bought all these tickets!” I laughed and told her “that’s right I’m gonna win!” As ted fumbled around digging for a name from the bucket and started to butcher 6 | YOUR PERFECT WEDDING 2017

my name and ask “is there a Jenna Mehrrrrrerrr here?” I jumped out of my seat and couldn’t contain my excitement as I ran down the aisle, jumped the speaker and landed on stage like it was “the price is right” because, I never win anything!

Ted made small talk as I stand there in my best Christmas gear when He finally said “well, Santa, why don’t you tell her what she won!” To my unexpected, biggest surprise ever, Santa removed his sunglasses, hat and beard and there stood Jon. It was not until a second after that I realized what was going on. Jon took the microphone and introduced himself to the crowd of 700. He shared an introduction of us and that he thought he had life pretty good until I came along, and

that now he can’t imagine life without me. Just like that, “Santa” reached in his sack and pulled out the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen, got down on his knee, and asked me to marry him! I could only nod my head as my heart was pounding with joy! We shared a kiss on stage to the crowd cheering below as everyone got to witness this event. When we left stage, we were met by my parents, my grandma, and Jon’s mom and sister who had all snuck in after I was seated. They were able to watch the whole thing, taking pictures and video I can keep forever.

Sharing the joy of the occasion with family, friends, and strangers was the best.

It never gets old as we continue to share the story of one pretty epic proposal.

PLAN AHEAD ENGAGEMENT  Announce engagement.  Engagement photo. This can be used with engagement or wedding announcement for your local newspaper.  Set the date and choose a location for the wedding.  Create a budget.  Choose attendants.  Start shopping for your gown and bridesmaids' dresses.  If you wish to, hire a wedding coordinator.

6 TO 9 MONTHS  Start compiling a list of guests. Ask your mother and the groom's mother to do the same.  Book the photographer, band/D.J., caterers, florist, videographer, caterer, etc.  Begin a list of favorite music and requested songs to give to the band or D.J.  Choose an officient.  Go with the groom to a formalwear store or tailor.

After the groom's attire has been chosen, the ushers and groomsmen should go in and get fitted as soon as possible.

4 TO 6 MONTHS  Order invitations, napkins, programs and anything else that requires a certain amount of time for printing.  Choose your wedding bands.  The mother of the bride should shop for her dress.

When she has chosen what to wear the groom's mother should do the same.  Discuss whether you should reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests with your parents.  Set a time for the wedding rehearsal.  Plan rehearsal dinner.  Plan honeymoon. If traveling meet with a travel agent.  Book accomodations for wedding-night.

2 TO 4 MONTHS  Finish up with alterations and try it on with all of the accessories to make sure everything looks good.  Book a final fitting and start breaking in your shoes.  Final alterations on bridesmaids' dresses.  Confirm contracts with florist, photographer, D.J., caterer, videographer, etc. Make sure all is in order.  Set up appointments for hair, manicure, make-up.

It might be a good idea to set up a pre-wedding appointment to make sure you are satisfied with the style and it works with the dress.

 Shop for bridesmaids' gift and groomsmen's gifts.  Register for wedding gifts.  Start addressing invitations. Ensure proper post-

age by bringing one to the post office and have it weighed.  Take a day off from all the wedding planning to pamper yourself. This is a day just for you to relax, have a massage, take a day off of work.

6 TO 8 MONTHS  Mail invitations.  Go over rehearsal dinner details and finalize them.  Confirm reservations at hotels for out-of-town guests and also your reservations for your weddingnight.  Confirm travel plans for your honeymoon.  Ask the Maid of Honor and your attendants for help with small tasks.  Pick up wedding rings.  Have your gown pressed and make arrangements for pick-up date and time.  Marriage license.

3 TO 6 MONTHS  Plan seating arrangements.  Start packing for the honeymoon.  Meet with the D.J./Band and go over any special music requests.  Meet with the coordinator at the reception site to go over all details, such as the time when the cake and flowers can be delivered and where on the day of the wedding.  Set up time for pictures with the photographer.

Make sure all parties who need to be there know this information ahead of time...don't forget to tell grandma and grandpa, brothers and sisters in case you are having family pictures at this time.  Check over all contracts thoroughly. When they need to be paid and if all requirements are met.  Take some time for the two of you...it's good to get away from all the stress of planning for awhile.

2 WEEKS  Call the newspaper for information on placing a wedding announcement in the paper.  Take care of life insurance beneficiary, health insurance plans that best suit both of you. If you are changing your name contact the DMV, bank, credit cards and Social Security.  If possible start writing checks for those needing to be paid. The officient, photographer, videographer, D.J./Band, etc.

 Assign some friends or family to be responsible for

getting gifts to reception and transporting them at the end of the evening.

1 WEEK  Contact the caterer with the final guest count.  Take care of any last minute details with florist, musicians, etc.  Write a note to your parents and his parents for their love and support.  Put together a bag of everything you will need for the wedding day. Things to include...jewelry, extra pair of pantyhose, aspirin, bobby pins, safety pins, mints, undergarments. And don't forget something old, new, borrowed and blue!

3 DAYS  Talk to the head usher about special seating arrangements or guests with special needs.  Don't forget the marriage license. You may want to give it to the Maid of Honor or Best Man to bring to the ceremony.  Notify attendants and parents on when they should arrive at the rehearsal. Give bridesmaids and groomsmen their gifts at the rehearsal dinner.  Get plenty of rest and eat right and drink your water.

THE WEDDING DAY  Eat a sensible breakfast.  Give the Maid of Honor the groom's ring.  Drink plenty of water.  Get your hair and make-up done.  Don't forget your "everything you need" bag.  Get to the church on time.  Relax and enjoy your day!

Robert and LeAnn R

Head over boots

obert and I met at a 2 day horse show that neither one of us was planning on going to but because of our kids we went to the show.

We spent a lot of time talking with each other those two days and we both thought the other was married and that the spouse was just not there. Once our conversation got a little deeper we found out we were both single and I was instantly attracted to Robert.

A few weeks later Robert started texting me and then calling me and we started dating about a month later, and then 1 1/2 years later Robert proposed to me at our local saddle club horse show in Detroit Lakes.

I had no idea this was going to happen until I started noticing things the morning of the show.

Robert asked me if I was going to wear a western shirt and I said no, it’s a fun show today and we can wear t-shirts so I’m just going to wear my purple saddle club shirt. He seemed kind of bummed but said okay and left it at that.

Once the show started I was running around helping to run the show and I looked over and noticed Robert on his horse and he had changed into a beautiful purple shirt (I love purple) and he was wearing his white cowboy hat that he never wears and always keeps in a box.

Then I happened to see his dad and his sister and her kids sitting in the crowd and started to wonder what was going on, but Robert had mentioned that his dad wanted to come watch a show 10 | YOUR PERFECT WEDDING 2017

sometime, so I thought maybe this was the day he just came to watch and Robert just didn’t tell me – but I also thought, could this be the day he proposes?

He had asked me several times previously if I would ever say yes to a proposal, and I said I would say yes as long as he didn’t ask me in front of a ton a people that I did not know and that he better have a tissue in his hand also because I would probably cry. I did say it would be okay if my horse friends were there. I also told him to quit asking me that because I wanted it to be a surprise if and when the day ever came.

After the first couple classes were complete I was told by the announcer over the loud speaker to come to the center of the arena for a special presentation, so I rode my horse into the arena and here come my parents walking in carrying a white rose. I though this was strange, why would my parents be coming to into the arena? Then I thought maybe this is some sort of special presentation in memory of my husband that had passed away 2 1/2 years ago from brain cancer – but why would they be doing this now?

Then over the loud speaker they started playing the song, “18 wheels and a dozen roses” and one by one my kids, my niece, Robert’s daughter and my horse

friends rode in on their horses each giving me a single red rose until I had 12 roses. Then in came Robert on his horse carrying a purple rose. At this point I knew what was going to happen for sure. He had the look of excitement, love, fear and I’m going to be sick all in one expression.

Robert rode up to me and told me I needed to dismount my horse, so we got off and my parents held our horses.

Robert said "I hope you enjoy your flowers that you say you don’t get often enough," and then he said "I have something else for you" and took a box out of the front pocket of his shirt. He opened the box, got on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes. He then put the ring on my finger and untied the purple hanker chief he had around his neck and told me it was for my tears, but I didn’t actually cry until the next day when it really sunk in.

Then they started playing the song “Head Over Boots” by Jon Pardi which is our favorite song.

OW WE MET One night, Ellen Bubak and Grace Famestad convinced Anne to sign up for a dating app called Tinder. At first she was hesitant to find dates based on a short description and just a few pictures but eventually downloaded the app and tried it out.

Meanwhile, Brandon and Jordan Knopf, and Joe and Becca Robbins had purchased tickets to a Garth Brooks concert and were putting pressure on Marcus to find a date for the concert.

Marcus’ roommate, David Katz, had heard of people having success in finding their significant others through Tinder and convinced Marcus to try it out. Unfortunately, Marcus “swiped right” on Anne’s pictures a few days too late and took David as his date to the concert instead.

After “swiping right” and matching with Anne on Tinder, Marcus sent Anne a message with a few words that showed a genuine interest in his second true love, Millie. Marcus and Anne carried on a few brief conversations about Millie before they agreed to meet up for drinks.

November 4, 2014 was an election day and Anne had planned on stopping to vote before meeting Marcus at the Uptown Tavern in Minneapolis. Needless to say, Anne got lost on the way to her polling place and was late for their first date.

Clearly, the date was a success because Anne texted Marcus before 8 am the next morning. Two nights later, 14 | YOUR PERFECT WEDDING 2017

Marcus and Anne went on their second date, a walk around Lake Calhoun and dinner at The Republic. Marcus had no idea at the time that a walk with Millie was a test. If he did not love Millie, or if she did not love him, there would not be a third date. Luckily, Millie immediately became his best friend and sidekick.

The next few weeks Marcus and Anne became inseparable.

One night, Marcus brought Anne to Derek and Meghan Mooney’s (his brother and sister-in-law) house for dinner. On the way home, Anne’s impatient nature shown through by saying “So...you introduced me to some of your family, does that mean we are officially dating?” Marcus laughed and said he had been planning a more romantic way of making the relationship “official” but, yes, we were “official.”

THE PROPOSAL The day was Monday, May 9, 2016.

Marcus had spent the last few days preparing for a final exam at St. Paul College. At noon, right before Marcus took his exam, he received an email from the jeweler saying the engagement ring he had ordered had finally arrived. With no delay, Marcus took his exam and drove across the city to pick up the engagement ring. He knew he would have a hard time hiding the ring for more than a few hours because Anne is a bit nosy.

Anne arrived home completely exhausted after a particularly challenging day teaching kindergarten. She had two goals for the evening: eat dinner and watch Netflix. Marcus had a slightly larger goal for the evening.

Living just a few blocks away from Lake Calhoun, Marcus and Anne take Millie on walks around the lake on a very regular basis. On this night, however, when Marcus suggested they take a walk, Anne refused. After the day she had, there was nothing that sounded better than curling up on the couch and drifting off to sleep. Finally, Marcus convinced Anne to take a walk partially around the lake before it began raining.

We danced a few steps right there and then got back on our horses and road a couple laps around the arena as our friends and family cheered.

After all was said and done I found out he had been planning this for a few months and all of my family and his family knew about it, and many of our horse friends were in on it also. They were very good secret keepers. I also learned that his proposal plan kept changing up until the last moment because of circumstance. It was the most perfect proposal in my opinion!

I had prayed one night about a year after my husband passed away and asked God to send me someone when and if he ever thought I was ready to move on. I asked God for a certain 5 things I thought I needed in a relationship, and the more I got to know Robert the more I noticed he perfectly matched all 5 of those

things. We both truly believe that my late husband Jay and God got together and said "here you go" and dropped Robert right in front of me.

We have not picked a wedding date yet as I live and work in Detroit Lakes and Robert lives and works in Fargo. Neither of us wants a long commute to work, so we have some decisions and plans to figure out first. So for now we are just going to enjoy this time in our lives.

camera. It was not uncommon for Marcus to bring his camera on walks because he would often take pictures of Millie and the lake. On this night, Anne was not amused by the camera saying “If you bring your camera you are NOT taking any pictures of me! I look awful and have no makeup on!” Little did she know, the pictures taken on that night would be amongst her all-time favorite pictures.

Marcus kept his cool as they set off walking around Lake Calhoun. He had a vision of proposing on a part of the lake that has an incredible view of downtown Minneapolis’ skyline. When they arrived at the south side of the lake, Marcus began taking pictures of Millie. He told Anne he wanted to try timer setting and take a “family picture” with the skyline in the background. Anne rolled her eyes and reminded Marcus that she did not want her picture taken with messy hair and no make-up.

After two pictures in a squatting position, Marcus wanted one more with

the two of them standing. Anne stood up, but Marcus remained on the ground. She said “Get up!

Get up! The timer is going to go off!” Marcus replied “You don’t get it!” He held the ring higher and at that moment Anne finally figured out what was going on. Marcus said “Will you marry me?”

Before saying “yes,” Anne was in shock and disbelief. Once Marcus confirmed that Anne had indeed said “yes,” he pulled a sign out of his pocket that said “She said yes!” Marcus set the timer and took a few more pictures. The pictures that Anne did not want taken are now some of the pictures that are truly priceless.

Lloyd and Ruby Strange proposal

M

y husband and I went to school together. I graduated and he went off to the service. Every time he came home on leave he came to my house. We went to the movies, played cards, etc. One time, after he had been home on leave and had gone back to the service, I received a card in the mail asking me to marry him!! He was a shy guy around me.

He had never even kissed me (he did put his arm around me at the movies)!

Well, I found a funny card with a lady with a mop in one hand and a scrub brush in the other and her hair in curlers and it said, “If no one claims me within 30 days…” and on the inside, “I’m Yours!”. Little did I know this sailor-boy was serious and 51 years later, here we are!

How did the wedding go??

We wanted a church wedding but about the time we set a date, he got shipped out to sea. So when he did get a leave to come home, we went to South Dakota to get married. The ring had not come in time so I dug out a rhinestone ring that had one stone missing,

and that’s what I got married with. We got married in the judge’s house, and it was pretty hilarious! When the judge looked at the ring with one stone missing, I’m sure he wondered how many times this sailor boy had used the ring! We did have a wedding reception… and life is great!

Tips for selecting wedding day flowers

hat would a wedding day be without flowers? The beauty and the aroma of fresh-cut flowers can create a welcoming atmosphere and complement the beauty and the style of a wedding wardrobe. Flowers are often the first things that guests see upon arriving for the ceremony, and they may even be something guests take home at the end of the night. Flowers create an air of romance, and most couples want to make flowers -- whether fresh or silk -- an integral part of their wedding day.

As with any decision when planning a wedding, choosing the right flowers requires some research and a basic knowledge of which flowers will convey the message and the theme of your wedding. The number of colors, textures and combinations that can be created are so numerous that couples may feel the decision on the floral arrangements is best left to the florist. But it doesn’t take a lot of expertise to know what you want, and it is important for couples to convey their feelings to the florist. Consider these tips when choosing a florist and selecting flowers.

• Experts advise that a couple start looking for a florist at least six months before the wedding, especially if the wedding will take place during the peak season of May through September. Get recommendations from friends as to which florist they used or find out if your wedding planner or banquet hall manager recommends a particular florist. Some catering halls have agreements with florists, and they work together.

• Browse magazines to get ideas of what you like. You also may be able to find a florist through an advertisement or if he or she has been featured in publications. Keep a scrapbook of the colors, types of flowers and arrangements and 42 | YOUR PERFECT WEDDING 2017

any other ideas that attract you so you will be able to present this information to the florist.

• Establish your flower budget prior to sitting down with the florist. You should expect to pay at least 8 percent of the total wedding cost on flowers. Get an estimate on the floral arrangement and then tweak your needs according to your budget. Many florists can modify arrangements and find a middle ground with regard to cost. Selecting flowers that are in-season will result in more affordable rates than if you desire exotic or out-of-season blooms.

• Once you’ve hired the florist, you can come up with a wedding flower worksheet that establishes all of your needs.

The florist may ask for specific information, such as photos of the bride’s gown as well as the colors and styles that the wedding party will be wearing. A good florist knows that a bouquet should not overpower or detract from the beauty of the bride. The florist may want to mimic textures from the dress, such as beading, with smaller flowers or berries within the arrangement. The groom’s boutonniere is traditionally one of the flowers from the bride’s bouquet so that the look is cohesive.

• Ceremony flowers may be traditional, and some houses of worship have strict guidelines as to what can and cannot be used. However, reception flowers can be where you show off your creativity and whimsy. After all, this is a party and it should be fun. You may want to give the florist more freedom of expression with regard to reception centerpieces and flowers that adorn other areas of the room.

• Because receptions tend to take place in the evening hours and are often indoor affairs, experts say that added light-

ing may be needed to put emphasis on the floral centerpieces and help present them in their best light. You may want to think about hiring a lighting designer to spotlight some areas of the room or at the very least incorporate candlelight into your centerpiece arrangements.

• To give the impression that there are more flowers than there really are, use fragrance and filler as your tools. Fragrant flowers can fill up the room with a welcoming aroma. Look for frangipani, lilies, hyacinths, jasmine, and sweet peas for a big impact. Florists know how to stretch arrangements by using greenery and other filler to lend bulk without too much extra cost.

• Experienced florists will know how long it takes certain buds to open and show off their maximum beauty. Therefore, expect a florist to be working on your floral arrangements as much as a week before the wedding date -- purchasing containers, cleaning flowers and waiting for certain ones to open fully. Minimize changes close to your wedding date as most things will already be started.

• It is possible to make your own centerpieces or bouquets if you so desire.

Simplicity will work best for the novice.

Think about grouping similar-hued calla lilies together for a bridal bouquet. Hydrangea and peonies are larger flowers that can easily fill up a vessel on a table as a centerpiece. White flowers will coordinate with any color scheme and could be the easiest to mix and match.

White blooms include sweet pea, rose, camellia, stephanotis, narcissus, gardenia, orchid, lily of the valley, jasmine, and gypsophila.

Wedding invitations tip sheet

edding invitations often provide guests with a first glimpse of a wedding’s style. Invitations also may serve as the means by which distant friends and relatives find out about a couple’s pending nuptials if a formal announcement was not made.

Amid the flourishes of calligraphy and impressive paper stock is information that speaks to the importance of the day when two people will be joining their lives together. Guests will learn not only the time and the place of the wedding from the invitation, but also the formality of the event and the scope of the party that will follow.

Couples should keep certain things in mind as they begin to design their wedding invitations.

• Have a good idea of your potential guest list. Before shopping for wedding invitations, it is key to have a strong idea of just how big the wedding will be and how many guests will be invited. This way you will know how many invitations you will need. Invitations vary in price, so cost may be a consideration if your guest list is extensive.

• Decide on the formality of the wedding. Will you be hosting a black tie affair, or will it be a casual gathering at the shore? Guests infer many things about the wedding from the invitations, which should match the formality of the event in style and the sentiments expressed.

An ornate invitation written with classic wording suggests a more formal affair, while a whimsical invitation with less formal wording could indicate a more laid-back event.

• Dare to be different by playing with invitation sizes and shapes. Rectangular cards are standard for wedding invitations, but you can explore your creativity by choosing more modern, artsy invitations. Circular invites or scalloped edges can add some whimsy to the wedding mood. Invitations that fold out or are embellished with ribbon or other decorations can be appealing. Just keep in mind that cards that are not the standard shape and size could be more costly to send. Always have the entire wedding invitation weighed and priced at the post office so you will know what the postage will cost.

• Choose a legible font and text color.

Your invitation may look beautiful, but it may prove ineffective if it is difficult to read. Do not risk guests misinterpreting the date or the location because they cannot read the writing on the invitation.

Steer clear of pastel or yellow text colors, and remember to have a high contrast between the color of the invitation and the text you are using for easy reading.

• Keep the invitation simple. It may be tempting to load the invitation with lots of information, but all you really need are the key pieces of information, such as the “who,” “what,” “where,” and “when.”

Crowding the card will take away from its aesthetic appeal. Most stationers will suggest a separate, smaller insert in the

wedding invitation for the reception information and response card.

Never put information such as where you are registered or “no kids allowed.” This is material better reserved for word of mouth or on a wedding Web site.

• Do some math. It is important to know your dates so you can receive the invitations on time, mail them out, and give guests enough time to respond. A good rule of thumb is to mail out the invitations at least two months before the wedding. Have an RSVP date of no more than three to four weeks before the wedding, giving ample time to the caterers and accommodating anyone who procrastinates in sending in a response. You will need the final headcount in order to confirm seating arrangements and plan for centerpieces and favors.

• Handwrite the envelopes. Your invitation will look more impressive if you address them by hand, rather than printing them off of a computer. If your handwriting is not very neat, consider hiring a professional calligrapher to write out your envelopes.

• Make it easy for guests to respond.

Be sure to place a stamp on the response card envelope and have that envelope already addressed with your home address so that guests will have no excuses not to mail a response back promptly.

• Always order extra. Mistakes happen, and you may need to send out a few extra invitations that you hadn’t originally counted. Always order extra invitations just to be on the safe side. And don’t forget you will probably want to keep one as a keepsake for yourself.

Music mistakes to avoid

Music is an essential component of a lively and fun wedding reception, and there are some musical miscues couples should look to avoid to ensure the music is not memorable for all the wrong reasons.  Blocks of silence: Nothing makes time seem interminable more than silence. Always have a constant flow of music to avoid awkward silences. This includes the time guests are waiting prior to the ceremony as well as when they're entering the cocktail hour. Music will help everyone feel comfortable, and it creates a pleasing atmosphere, so make sure music plays throughout the festivities.  Second-guessing a professional: In an effort to curb costs, some couples provide their own playlists via an mp3 player or a streaming service for the music. This is often a mistake. Hiring a professional

means you will not have to worry about managing music on top of your many other wedding day responsibilities. A band or deejay usually also serves as the emcee for the event, announcing key moments of the reception as well as getting guests up on the dance floor.  Playing only one type of music: Playing too many songs from one genre of music will alienate some of the guests who simply are not interested in that type of music. Professional deejays or performers know how to offer a great mix that will appeal to the masses, and they are often well worth the cost. Try to span different decades and genres to keep as many of your guests on the dance floor as possible.  Failure to make a song list: Some songs you may feel are essential to the wedding and others may be on a do-not-play list and are associated with negative memories. Band leaders and deejays are not mind readers. Give your band leader or

deejay ample time to review your requests so that he or she has time to find a song that may not be in his or her collection.  Dancing to long songs: Pay attention to a song's length, and choose spotlight dance songs wisely. Remember that guests will be watching you dance with parents or each other, and a five-minute song can seem neverending while others are waiting around. Avoid very long songs, as the mix of music should be upbeat. The wedding isn't the time to play "American Pie" by Don McClean, Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" or Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird."  Inappropriate lyrics and volume: Keep the music at an acceptable volume, and avoid songs with suggestive language or curse words that are inappropriate in a family setting. Music is a key element of any good party, including a wedding reception, and it's essential that couples take steps to avoid any musical miscues.
