After raising $7,500 for the Lakes Area Crisis Center last year, bed racers will once again be decking out their rides for the 76th Northwest Water Carnival, which runs July 8-17.

According to Bob Schlieman, one of the coordinators behind the upcoming bed races event, money pledged by participants who take part in the next round of races will go toward providing new cribs for the Pediatrics Unit at Essentia Health St. Mary’s hospital, located at 1027 Washington Ave. in Detroit Lakes.

cation last year, and hopes that racers can surpass the old pledge amount in July.

“I think it’s a great area for that money to go to,” said Schlieman as he reflected on the Detroit Lakes Jaycees’ decision to help the hospital. “It doesn’t only benefit the city of DL, but the surrounding area as well.”

According to Schlieman, the bed races had been organized years ago, but were discontinued sometime during the Carnival’s existence. Now, the event organizer is thrilled to have the races back in action.

“I thought it was a great thing we started back up last year,” Schlieman said. “We had a lot of fun doing it. I thought it was one

of the bigger events.”

According to Schlieman, eight teams participated in last year’s bed races. He hopes to increase that number by at least four before race day.

“We’re looking for some good competition,” Schlieman said.

“It’s a great thing for the participants as well as the fans.”

Good competition is also good for St. Mary’s.

LeAnn Mouw, director of development at Essentia Health Saint Mary’s, said receiving help from the community is amazing.

Cool your heels at the water fights

Teams are once again being asked to step up to the hose for the upcoming water fights event during the 76th Northwest Water Carnival, which runs July 8-17 in Detroit Lakes.

Event chair Jon Olson said that all are welcome to come and enjoy the water fights, which are scheduled to take place in City Park on July 15.

The event is free to the public.

“We encourage families to come down and enjoy the spectating,” Olson said.

In previous years, many local teams have risen to the water fight challenge and competed valiantly. Olson said that this years “team to beat” is Lakeshirts.

“Lakeshirts is always a great competitor,” Olson said.

“We hope they’ll be back.”

They will most certainly be back.

Alma Alaniz, human resource administrator for Lakeshirts, said three squadrons of water-fighting veterans from the local business are taking out their swimming trunks for the upcoming event. She also

said that the reasoning behind the past success of Lakeshirts teams could be attributed to one thing: “Experience.”

“Some of these guys have been doing the water fights for years,” Alaniz said. “That definitely helps.”

Alaniz also said that, ultimately, the teams from Lakeshirts just enjoy getting out and spending time with the community.

“It’s pretty exciting to be a part of the water carnival as it is,” Alaniz said. “I think everybody is just having fun.”

Alaniz, herself, is no stranger to the fun that comes from competing in the water fights.

She has taken part in the wet festivities for 16 years, and remembers her first watery encounter like it was yesterday.

The human resource administrator described her initial experience with the water fights in one word: “Scary,” Alaniz chuckled.

Once she got past the initial intensity of water fighting, Alaniz said that she found a passion for the activity.

“After that first water fight, I was kind of hooked,” Alaniz said.

A ball can be seen 10 feet above the teams’ heads, dangling from a wire that stretches across the arena.

Similar to dodge ball, team members on each side of the arena launch away from their end at the sound of the referee’s whistle.

Once the action has started, each team must attempt to push the ball to the other teams’ side of the arena, using a water hose. The first team to push the ball to the opposite side is named the winner.

Olson said that the water fights have been going on for as long as he can remember.

He also believes that the activity originated with the true water hose professionals.

“I believe it started between the area fire departments,” Olson said. “That was kind of the rumor.”

Olson also said he hopes that at least 12 teams will participate in the water fights.

Teams, which are allowed a maximum of six people each, can sign up at 6 p.m. the day of the event, or call in prior to the carnival.

“They can certainly sign up

with me ahead of time,” Olson said.

The water fights are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. Teams interested in signing up for the event early are asked to call Olson at (218) 234-8680.

The registration fee is $30 per team, and each team member must have a NWC button.

For Olson, the water fights are about more than just competition. Tradition is the main significance behind the activity.

“The event itself is a classic tradition for the Detroit Lakes area,” Olson said.

Bragging rights: Local brewers to compete

Local beer enthusiasts will soon be uncorking their barrels for the upcoming Home Brew Contest and Beer Tasting event, which is scheduled to take place at Zorbaz during the 76th Northwest Water Carnival. According to event co-chair Matt Boeke, this year’s judges will be focusing on brewers’ ability to create “something unique, something different and full flavor.”

“appeal to a large audience” through taste, they will be sitting just fine, Boeke said.

Boeke also said he hopes that people can get out and enjoy the unique recipes of local brewers. So far, 10 participants are breaking out their special concoctions for the contest.

We’re hoping to “get a big draw off this,” Boeke said.

Additionally, the event organizer said there might be a new twist in this year’s contest.

“We’re hoping to have cask brewing,” Boeke said.

Cask brewing, which according to Boeke is an “old school” style of brewing, involves creating beer that is unfiltered and served from a cask, without additional pressure from nitrogen or carbon dioxide.

In addition to home brewers, Boeke said that this year’s beer tasting event is expected to attract 16 different beer vendors, who will be serving 1-ounce samples to patrons of legal drinking age.

The Home Brew Contest and Beer Tasting event is a relatively new Water Carnival tradition, according to Boeke.

The co-chair said he believes the event has been held for “at least the last eight years.”

As far as necessary materials go for the event, home brewers are asked to bring six 12-ounce bottles. Additionally, they may bring whatever other gear they need.

Contestants will begin serving beer at 7 p.m. There will be a $5 fee for tasters who show up with a Water Carnival Button. Those with a Booster Button will get in free, Boeke said.

NW Parade to feature old favorites and new talent

The Parade of the Northwest is a Detroit Lakes tradition that is said to be as old as the Water Carnival celebration itself.

Scheduled to kick off July 18 along Washington Avenue, the 2011 parade is expected to draw 10,000-plus spectators, all of who are welcome to enjoy everything from outof-town marching bands to water-squirting trolleys.

This year’s parade will move to the beat of new talent, including performances

by North Dakota State University’s Gold Star Drumline, and old favorites, such as the “Jamestown clowns” — a mix of old school and new school entertainment that parade organizer Jessica Anderson says people will not want to miss.

Additionally, Anderson said the parade is a perfect opportunity for people to spend time with family and friends.

“I just like seeing the kids and seeing everybody,” said Anderson as she reflected on the three years she has spent organizing the annual parade.

So far, the parade organizer said there are “roughly 6070” parties signed up to be in the parade. If there are people who still want to enter the lineup, Anderson said they should do so sooner, rather than later.

Anderson also said that this year’s total lineup numbers are expected to be similar to the 110 entries that made up last year’s parade.

A large number of parade entries are all the more reason

to come and check out the action in this year’s parade.

Anderson admitted that every year she looks forward to watching her favorite veteran entries trail behind the locally infamous Jaycees Trolley.

One name, in particular, came to mind as Anderson recalled her favorite parade participants to watch for.

pipe band) are really fun,” Anderson said.

One of the newer additions to this year’s parade is NDSU’s Gold Star Drumline, currently under the instruction of Wade Stalboerger, an NDSU student originally from Moorhead, who is studying music education.

The instructor of nine years admitted that parade performances are a part of who he is,

and that he and his 12 drummers are excited to perform in Detroit Lakes.

“I’ve been doing parade stuff my entire life,” the instructor chuckled.

The Water Carnival is not the only gig the Fargo band has managed to drum up. According to Stalboerger, the group was also scheduled to perform in Perham, Willmar and Granite Falls the weekend of June 24-26.

Through their performances in area parades, Stalboerger said the drummers hope to raise money so they can enter a music competition in the Twin Cities next year.

But mostly, the instructor said the important thing is that everyone has a “good time.”

Having a good time will be easier for parade entrants this year, according to Anderson.

There has been a slight tweak in the sign-up process.

“You can register online this year,” Anderson said.

“You can also print the registry form and send it to us.”

Check-in and line-up for entrants is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. the day of the parade. The parade kickoff is at 1 p.m.

No celebration is complete without food, and the Northwest Water Carnival is certainly no exception.

On Saturday, July 17, the carnival will host its long running, famous Chili and Salsa Cook-off outside the Pavilion.

“It’s a fun atmosphere,” said Emily Lauinger, who is in charge of the event.

“There are a lot of people.”

The premise is simple: people bring chili or salsa ingredients, which they must start preparing by 9 a.m., and turn them into creations worthy of the title of Best Chili, Best Salsa, Best Booth Display, Gastro-Blaster, or Rick’s Choice Award.

“They have to prepare it on site,” Lauinger said, so “they start early.”

Although judging occurs at 11:30 a.m., the event doesn’t end until all the

food is gone.

Historically, though, that has not taken very long.

“We are suggesting that people make a minimum of two gallons of chili,” Lauinger said, adding that “when it’s over, it’s over.”

People are invited to mingle in the Pavilion area as long as they please, enjoying the atmosphere and food, as well as entertainment and refreshments.

A steel drum band will be performing outdoors during the event, playing festive rhythms perfect for eating chili.

The Beer Garden will be open throughout the day, offering a wide variety of imported and domestic brews.

The cost for a bowl is $1, as well as the $2 Water Carnival button. A single bowl can be used for the entire event.

76th NORTHWEST WATER CARNIVAL BED RACES from page 1 Naturally, when the Detroit Lakes Jaycees offered to help the local hospital, the director was thrilled. After all, for a place that delivers more than 500 babies every year, Saint Mary’s could easily find use for some extra cribs.

But make no mistake: cribs are not cheap.

“They cost about $3,000 each,” Mouw said.

A hefty price tag is all the more reason for local businesses and organizations to gather as many racers as possible.

Mouw said two teams from St. Mary’s have already decided to contribute to the cause by building rides for the upcoming race. Team members from the St. Mary’s “Urgent Care” and “Therapy” centers will be competing in the races.

“It will be a friendly inter-competition between the two,” Mouw joked.

For racers, like those from St. Mary’s, it is important to know the basic concepts behind the upcoming races.

In bed racing, members of a fiveperson crew, consisting of four pushers and one passenger, work together to push a twin-sized bed-on-wheels down a parted lane. The first team to reach the finish line wins.

But there are rules.

Passengers are required to stay on their beds at all times during the course of a race. Also, four of the five team members must be touching the bed when it crosses the finish line. At the end of a race, three judges will give out awards after they have determined which team was first to finish, had the best team spirit and maintained the largest pledge.

Prior to each race, all beds must pass an inspection, conducted by judges. The proper officials will make sure the following standards are met: 1. Each team member must be 18

years of age, and at least one member of each team must be female.

2. Additionally, the beds that are entered into the bed races must be twinsized. Beds may be constructed out of any material.

3. The beds do not have to originally have been beds. However, they must be firmly and safely assembled, so parts do not break off. If any functional piece of a bed breaks off during a race, that bed will be disqualified.

4. Mattress supports should be strong enough to hold a rider, and beds must have four wheels, able to remain in contact with the ground at all times.

5. Manpower will be the only means of propulsion; no form of mechanical advantage will be allowed in the bed races.

According to Schlieman, the length of the racetrack has yet to be determined. He said that the most important thing for teams to focus on is maintaining strong teamwork.

“You don’t necessarily have to be the fastest team out there,” Schlieman said. It’s about being on a “team that works best together.”

The bed races are scheduled to launch July 13 at 6 p.m. in City Park.

For Schlieman, the bed races are not all about winning. Rather, participants are encouraged to join the community in having a good time.

“I just look forward to the fun that is had by everybody,” Schlieman said.

“It’s money toward a very good organization, as well.”

Family Day focuses on kid’s games, music, fun

Although the Northwest Water

Carnival is in many ways a family celebration, there are some events — such as the Homebrew Contest and Beer Tasting — which are either exclusive to older crowds, or geared towards them.

However, young families who want to experience the Water Carnival together can do so on Family Day, held on Sunday, July 10.

“We’re gonna have lots of kids events,” said Emily Lauinger, who organizes Family Day. These will include “old fashioned games” like the classic three legged race and potato sack races, as well as more contemporary activities like turtle races, face painting and frog races.

The Amazing Family Race is an especially anticipated event this year,

taking place in the City Park at 1 p.m.

The rules are simple: a team of four (three of any four on a team must be related) completes a series of unique challenges.

“It’s like an obstacle course,” Lauinger said.

The competition may be fierce, considering each member of the winning team receives a free yearlong pass to the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center.

Local musician Tim Eggebraaten will wrap up the day with a special “Kids’ Music Show” in the City Park bandstand at 3:30 p.m.

All of the events at Family Day are free with a $2 Water Carnival button.

“We’re really just trying to offer a lot of entertainment for a little money,” Lauinger said.

Don’t miss the pageant Miss Northwest event can be a stepping stone

Miss Northwest 2010 Melissa Paakh will crown a new Miss Northwest July 8 at the Historic Holmes Theatre.

Like all pageants, Miss Northwest provides a chance for the public to see the area’s young ladies’ impressive talents and accomplishments on full display.

However, Miss Northwest is special in the sense that its single lucky winner gets the chance to compete in even more competitive pageants.

“We’re affiliated with the Mrs. Minnesota and Miss America system,” said Cindy Moore, the director of Miss Northwest.

“Whoever is the new Miss Northwest will compete in the Miss Minnesota in June 2012.”

The Miss Northwest competition is divided into four categories: Personal Interview, Talent, Evening Gown,

Lifestyle and Fitness, and OnStage Interview.

The cumulative score in these categories is used to determine the next Miss Northwest, who will spend the next year preparing for Miss Minnesota.

This interim period is a time of great challenge and personal growth for the lucky young winner, who must prove her mettle against approximately 20 other young women vying for the Miss Minnesota title.

“They need to develop their platform,” Moore said, adding that “they do the traditional things like attend other pageants and plays,” among other things.

For example, the current Miss Northwest — Melissa Paak, who will be leading the show — spent hundreds of hours writing, illustrating, publishing and promoting a

children’s book, which aimed to increase environmental awareness amongst young children.

“She’s done a couple of book signings and she’s read to around 800 children in this part of Minnesota,” Davis said.

It is no wonder contestants go to such great lengths to prove themselves, considering the stakes. Miss America gives out a total of $5 million in scholarships a year, including what is given at the local and state level.

“Miss America really stands for scholarship and opportunity,” Davis said.

Chelsea graduated from high school in Starbuck and is currently attending Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes pursuing a nursing degree. She will be performing a jazz dance to “Popular” from the musical “Wicked.” Her platform is “SIMPLE — Six Ways to Improve Elderly Quality of Life.”

Laura Paakh is the 21-year-old daughter of Bruce Paakh and Lori Paakh. Laura is a graduate of Detroit Lakes High School and will be attending California Lutheran University, pursuing a degree in psychology and a minor in music.

She will be performing a vocal selection entitle “Bel Piacere” by Handel. Her platform is “There’s no Excuse for Verbal Abuse.”

Hanna Larson is the 19-year-old daughter of Dr. Aaron and Peggy Larson. Hanna graduated from Wadena High School and will be a sophomore at Concordia College in Moorhead pursuing a degree in psychology with a minor in music.

She will be performing a piano selection entitled “All of Me” by Jon Schmidt. Her platform is “A ‘Trichy’ Disease: Tricholtillomania.”

Paige Meyer is the 18-yar-old daughter of Tom Meyer and Terry and Alice Meyer. Paige is a 2011 graduate of Perham High School and will be attending Jamestown College with a major in music education. She will be performing a classical ballet to “Ave Maria”
