New bike trail from Detroit Lakes to Frazee has a lot of ‘heart’

ooking for a nice place for a springtime bicycle ride?

Check out the new Heartland Trail extension between Detroit Lakes and Frazee.

The paved, multi-use trail is open to Acorn Lake, where a new bridge carries the trail over County Road 10.

Starting from Highway 10 on the far eastern end of Detroit Lakes, near the Country Inn and Suites, the trail dives under the highway via an underpass and then follows the highway for a bit before swerving off to a more scenic pathway along Old Highway 10. It then comes back closer to Highway 10 before eventually sloping down to hug the shoreline of Acorn Lake before rising back up and heading to the new bridge.

A favorite section of the trail swerves off the highway right-of-way and runs along the Old Highway 10 route, said Becker County Economic Development Director Guy Fischer.

“It’s just beautiful there,” he said. “It’s like another world.

It’s a little boggy in places, and there are Lady Slippers there. It’s a respite, a relaxing area, then you pop out again on the other side.”

The ride along Acorn Lake is also scenic, and the new trail bridge across County Road 10 at Acorn Lake creates “a great entryway to Frazee,” as motorists pass underneath it on the way into town, Fischer said.

You can actually get to the Highway 10 section of the Heartland Trail by going through Detroit Lakes

on designated bicycle trails from City Park. Just take the bike path through the park, past Sanford Health, up to Essentia Health, jog east a block, then north on McKenzie Avenue and east along the Highway 10 frontage road to the Highway 10 trail.

You can also get there from the Hidden Hills area, without having to cross Highway 10, by using a stretch of trail that connects to the main trail from County Road 54.

Along the beach

Eventually, Detroit Lakes planners hope to continue the existing multiuse trail along the city’s mile-long beach and West Lake Drive all the way to a paved trail that already exists along the Pelican River outlet on Little Detroit Lake.

“The city has talked about connecting into Dunton Locks (County Park),” Fischer said.

The paved trail along the Pelican River starts at the Detroit Lakes bowling alley parking lot, at 1377 West Lake Drive, runs to the Pelican River, and turns to follow the river, passing under West Lake Drive through a culvert-style underpass.

That scenic stretch of trail continues along the river, with wetlands and then wooded land on one side and the river on the other, passes under Highway 59 through another culvertstyle underpass, and ends at the Dunton Locks parking lot.

The trail along Little Detroit will be built over the next several years as part of the three-phase West Lake Drive project, which starts this summer from the Pelican River to County Road 6.

If the few remaining legal hurdles can be cleared, the West Lake Drive project from Legion Drive to County Road 6 could start in late summer or early fall of this year.

On to Frazee

It’s been a long haul for the Heartland Trail Extension in this part of the state, because routes have to be laid out and land acquired – unlike the original Heartland Trail that runs eastward from Park Rapids and is built on abandoned railroad grade. The Paul Bunyan Trail and other large, established trail systems also had the advantage of being built on railroad grade.

But slow and steady wins the race, and the trick is to keep on moving forward, Fischer said, “There has been a lot of effort put into this Heartland Trail project for a lot of years,” he said.

This year, there is $500,000 in Gov. Walz’s proposed bonding bill to continue the Heartland Trail from the Acorn Lake trail bridge on to Highway 87. From there it will flow into Frazee as part of the ongoing Highway 87 construction project.

Much of the trail from Acorn Lake to Highway 87 will continue to follow the Highway 10 right-of-way, but planners hope to avoid the Highway 10-Highway 87 interchange by having the trail cut over and follow Cemetery Road, Fischer said.

Eventually, plans call for the Heartland Trail to stretch from Moorhead to Park Rapids, with a spur from Park Rapids to Itasca State Park.

involved, the more financial support from the state, Fischer said.

And there have been a number of people involved in getting the Heartland Trail this far, including elected officials like Bruce Imholte of Detroit Lakes, Hank Ludtke of Frazee, Becker County commissioners John Okeson and Ben Grimsley, local government staffers like DL City Engineer John Pratt, Becker County Highway Engineer Jim Olson, Detroit Lakes Administrator Kelcey Klemm, DL Tourism Bureau Director Cleone Stewart, former DL Public Works Director Brad Green, Charles Chadbourne of Erie Township, DNR trails developer Kent Skaar, Patrick Hollister with PartnerShip 4 Health, and local legislators Paul Marquart and Kent Eken, among many others.

“There’s been a lot of great people working on it,” Fischer said.

“It’s been a great collaboration of people to get this done over a period of time.” ­­‰

The biggest country music and camping festival in the U.S. is right in Detroit Lakes

he iconic WE Fest country music festival, scheduled this year for Aug. 4-6 at Detroit Lakes’ Soo Pass Ranch, is moving into a new era. “Cashless” purchases via a new wristband system, a brand-new main stage configuration with “pit passes,” tiered seat pricing for VIP fans, reserved and lawn sections – all these and more changes are coming to the 38-year-old festival in 2022.

Another thing to note about this year’s festival: Summer road construction on West Lake Drive is going to impact how traffic around the Soo Pass Ranch will flow.

As for the artists lined up to take the main stage, headliners Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert will be joined by 12 other stars, including Tanya Tucker, Lee Brice, Clay Walker and Chris Janson, along with emcee Cowboy Troy.

This year’s festival marks a new era of ‘cashless’ purchases, plus main stage upgrades to bring the stars even closer to the fans.

Cowboy Troy will be this year’s main stage emcee, and there will be additional entertainment and live music performances at both the Soo Pass Ranch Saloon and Barn Stage, starting with the Tuesday, Aug. 2 pre-party and Wednesday, Aug. 3 kickoff party and continuing throughout the festival’s three-day run.

A safer, more efficient ‘cashless’ system

Armbands worn by festival patrons will be used for pretty much all services offered on site this year, from admission to the campgrounds and concert bowl to purchasing food, beverages and souvenirs.

“We are going to RFID — radio frequency identification — at all entrances and points of sale,” says WE Fest General Manager Mark Bjerke. “When you buy your ticket, you’ll get a wristband that needs to be activated.”

Once activated, the wristband will be tied to a form of payment — either cash or a credit/debit card can be used — that can be reloaded once depleted.

“We call it ‘cashless,’ because payment for all goods and services on site will be through the wristband,” Bjerke said,

adding that it provides enhanced security both for vendors and patrons. “It’s not wise to carry that much cash at any major event.”

Check-in and check-out for employees will also be handled electronically from now on, he added, noting that with this system in place, allocation of staffing and resources can be done much more efficiently, to better serve both patrons and artists.

A more fan-friendly experience

The main stage has been redesigned to include a T-shaped thrust off the main platform so artists can walk out among the audience without leaving the stage. There will be a pit off either side of the thrust stage, between the main platform and the top of the ‘T,’ where fans can stand and watch the show using “pit passes” that allow them admission into this coveted, close-up area.

Though some of WE Fest’s features will look much different this year, some of its more popular attractions, like this lighted sign, are sure to return.

“I think the pit passes are mostly sold out,” Bjerke said in mid-April, noting that this particular change was driven by the artists and not financial considerations.

“WE Fest has always been that cool place (for artists) to play,” he added. “We want to make sure our artists go away with a great experience, just as our patrons do.”

The VIP, reserved and lawn seating areas have also been restructured so that the best seats — i.e., the ones closest to the stage — are the most expensive.

Another change is in the VIP hospitality area, which has been renovated to include new fencing, a larger tent and more room to move around. Other changes have been made behind the scenes, as well, mainly to streamline operations and increase efficiency.

“It’s still all about the customer,” Bjerke said, “but the more efficient we are, the more it helps us to keep our prices in check. We’re putting on a big party. We want to make sure everybody — our artists, our patrons and our employees — is comfortable and having a great time.”

Roadwork will be ‘paused’ during festival

The two-phase reconstruction of Detroit Lakes’ West Lake Drive — a major thoroughfare for traveling to and from the Soo Pass Ranch during WE Fest — will impact how traffic around the festival will flow this year.

“They’re doing Phase 2 (from County State Aid Highway 6 to the Pelican River)

first,” Bjerke said. “By the time WE Fest starts they’ll have the gravel surface in place.”

Construction of that phase will be paused during the run of the festival so traffic can use the gravel roadway to access the site from the east side. Traffic on the west side of the Soo Pass, along Highway 59, will run pretty much as normal, though there may be more traffic along CSAH 6, which runs between the two roadways.

For Phase 1 — the portion of West Lake Drive between Legion Road and CSAH 6 — Bjerke said it was still unknown how much access there would be during WE Fest.

“But we shouldn’t have any issues,” he added. “We’ll have plenty of signage, and there will be information posted on the website, as well.” ­­‰

Living history Perham Pioneer Fest brings the past into the present

Perham Pioneer Fest brings history to life with “living history” exhibits and demonstrations.

he Perham Pioneer Fest will be bringing history to life on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13-14.

The festival is entering its 52nd year at Pioneer Village – located at 1251 1st Avenue North in Perham – and operable antique machines, including a sawmill, are being added to the list of live-action events this year.

“The sawmill is in honor of Luverne Ehnert,” said Jeff Janke, the president of Pine to Prairie Antique Tractor Gas Engine Association, which hosts the festival.

Janke said the honor was given to the late Ehnert for the Frazee man’s generosity. Ehnert provided years of service to the Pine to Prairie association, and gifted the group with the antique mill. He passed away in January.

Janke explained that Ehnert’s wood planing mill takes rough-cut boards and transforms them into finished lumber. Other antique machines that will be featured at the festival this year include a tool known as the mother of tools – a lathe. The lathe was invented in 1751 and played an integral part in the Industrial Revolution, as it was one of the earliest machines that led to the invention of other machine tools.

“The machines will be placed on concrete slabs that were donated by Archie and Linda Wiedewitsch,” Janke

The Perham Pioneer Fest allows visitors to get a good look at antique tractors. This year, an antique tractor pull is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13.

‘Life’s a Beach’ in Detroit Lakes This year’s Northwest Water Carnival, the pinnacle summer event of the lakes area, will be a wet-and-wild ride of watery fun

he 86th Northwest Water Carnival will be a grand celebration of all that is ‘lake life,’ as the theme of this year’s carnival, “Life’s a Beach,” suggests.

From beachside frisbee golf to a demolition derby, a wet-and-wild parade to lakeside contests and dances, the 10 days of fun will kick off in Detroit Lakes on Friday, July 8 and continue through Sunday, July 17.

Local Jaycees club members and Water Carnival Co-Admirals Andrew Lessin and Kasey Fetzer, the primary planners of this year’s carnival, said one ever-popular feature of the event – the music – won’t disappoint in 2022.

The carnival’s first concert will be held at the event’s kick-off party in front of Lakeside Tavern. At 7 p.m. on July 8, the good times will roll with live music

by Born Too Late and October Road. Then, on July 15 and 16, the fun and famous Bash on the Beach will bring out big hitters for the two-night outdoor concert on Detroit Lakes’ mile-long City Beach.

On July 15, the crowd-pleasing Hairball will take the stage. After 22 years of rocking crowds, the band has perfected its energetic performances, which always leave spectators feeling like they attended Van Halen, KISS, Motley Crue and Queen concerts all in one night. Opening for Hairball will be the Fabulous Armadillos.

The next night, July 16, Eddie Montgomery will kick out the country jams. Montgomery is known for his work with the band Montgomery Gentry, which produced more than 20 chart-topping singles. The band included Montgomery and Troy Gentry, who passed away in a helicopter crash in 2017. In 2021, Montgomery released his debut solo album, “Ain’t No Closing Me Down.” His opening act will be Troubadour.

Lessin said he was glad they were able to book both rock and country performers for the Bash, as they aim to please as many people as possible and both genres have proven popular in the past.

The Water Carnival has been planned and sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees since 1935, and is one of the longest-running festivals in Minnesota. Every year, the Jaycees choose two different Co-Admirals from their club to lead up the organizational efforts and serve as the public faces of that year’s carnival.

The Water Carnival is an enormous undertaking that requires the help of not only the Jaycees, but hundreds of local volunteers and sponsoring businesses, who help to plan and host the multi-day carnival’s many events. At the time of this writing, well over 50 events were planned, and more were still expected.

Water fights, a tug-of-war competition, sand castle building, kids games in the park, a pup plunge and more are all longtime favorites of the Water Carnival, as is the big Parade of the Northwest, which closes out the festival on its final day, along with a water ski show on Detroit Lake.

New this year will be a Sailboat Regatta, Fetzer said, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 9. Inspired by the artistic sailboat regatta held this past winter in honor of Detroit Lakes’ 150th birthday celebrations – which involved a

display of 150 sailboat sculptures, created by local artists – this regatta will feature actual sailboats, racing on the water.

“If anyone with a sailboat wants to join, there will be different race classes,” Fetzer said.

Races will begin with the sound of a horn, and then the racers will have to navigate around buoys before reaching the finish line.

“The event was a natural fit for the Northwest Water Carnival,” Lessin said.

Lessin, 37, was encouraged by friends to join the Jaycees eight years ago. After seeing all the fun events the group is a part of, he decided to jump on board with the service organization. Fetzer, also 37, joined seven years ago. She said her employer, Lakeshirts, encourages community involvement, and when considering her volunteering options, she felt the Jaycees was a good fit.

Fetzer and Lessin make a good planning team, they said, as they have different areas of expertise and natural talents that pair well together: While Fetzer enhances the creative aspects of planning, Lessin is good at making sure the finer details are covered. ­­‰

LAND & LAKES North Country Scenic Hiking Trail

Spanning seven states and over 4,600 miles, the North Country Hiking Trail is the longest hiking path in the United States. The trail through Becker County runs 62 miles from Itasca State Park to the Becker County-Otter Tail County line near Frazee. Suggested hikes on the trail include: ▶ North from the Highway 34 Trailhead (located two miles east of Becker County Road 29), out-and-back: Hike as far as you want then return. You will cross through prairie fields and see wetlands. ▶ South from Highway 113 Trailhead in the White Earth State Forest, out-and-back: Hike through a white pine plantation then return. ▶ Highway 113 to CR-39 Trailhead, 4.3 miles: Hike through a mix of hardwoods and pine plantations and over some hilly terrain. Part of this hike is along the Laurentian (Continental) Divide.

Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge

The North Country Trail also runs through the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, a quiet and pristine place for outdoor play. Access the trail from 400th Avenue, Blackbird Wildlife Drive or the Pine Lake Parking Area on County Highway 29.

In addition to the North Country Trail, Tamarac offers several miles of other hiking trails. Park at the Discovery Center and take the 1/4-mile Discovery Loop, or the 1.5mile Bear Paw Trail, which goes to historic cabins.

On the Old Indian Hiking Trail, follow in the footsteps of the Ojibwe people and experience the beauty of the maple basswood forest. This 2.4-mile loop trail is accessed from County Highway 29.

LAND & LAKES Dunton Locks County Park

This 53-acre park just south of Detroit Lakes has nearly 4 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails on the hills along the shores between Lake Sallie and Muskrat Lake. The northern trails wind through hardwood forested hills that were once a gathering spot for Sioux Indians, and remnants of Indian burial mounds are still present throughout the park. The southern trails also wind through rolling, wooded terrain.

Greater Sucker Creek

This gem boasts 117 acres of natural woods and prairie with accessible paved paths, unimproved trails, marshwalks, a designated trout stream, amphitheater and interpretive signs. The park is located on the southeast side of Detroit Lakes, just off U.S. Highway 10.

HIKING AND BIKING TRAILS AROUND DETROIT LAKES

AROUND PERHAM

▶ The Fish Hatchery Recreation Trail is a 1.1-mile paved trail that follows the Pelican River from the western shores of Detroit Lake to Lake Sallie at Dunton Locks County Park. More information is available by calling Becker County Parks and Recreation at 218-846-2612 or visiting the county parks and recreation website. ▶ The Lakeside Recreation Trail offers a magnificent view of Big Detroit Lake. The paved 1.25-mile trail runs from North Shore Drive to East Shore Drive along the frontage road and U.S. Highway 10. More information is available by calling Detroit Lakes Public Works at 218-8474637 or visiting the City of Detroit Lakes website. ▶ The Richwood Road Recreation Trail parallels County Highway 21 to North Tower Road. This 1-mile paved trail provides walkers and bikers in the northern areas of Detroit Lakes quick access to the heart of the city. For more information, call the Becker County Highway Department at 218847-4463 or visit the county website. ▶ The Heartland State Trail. Plans are well underway to continue to expand the multi-use Heartland State Trail through Becker County, with paved pathways just recently finished near Detroit Lakes. It connects with the Paul Bunyan State Trail system and other regional train systems.

▶ Arvig Trail and Park, on County Road 51 on the north side of Perham, offers a paved bike and walking path as well as softball and soccer fields, volleyball sand courts, tennis courts, Little League fields and a frisbee golf court. The trail connects to the Cal Miller Bike Trail, which heads south and loops through town. ▶ Pioneer Grounds, east of Arvig Park on County Road 8, features a 3-mile bike and walking loop that circles the park. Vehicles may park on the grass field off 3rd Avenue NW and 6th Street NW. The grounds are the site of Perham’s annual Pioneer Festival and Black Powder Rendezvous events. ▶ The Wildflower Trail is for both bikers and nature walkers. It runs along the front side of Perham Health and connects to the downtown area, as well as to the Wellness Trail, a ¾-mile loop through the hospital’s 37-acre grounds.

The 3 miles of natural surface trails at Becker County’s Mountain View Recreation Area wind their way through a mature, mixed hardwood forest.

The trails are wide and offer several different loop options. The trails are used for horseback riding as well as hiking in the summer, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Separate single-track mountain bike/ snowshoe trails are also being developed. Parking for 10-15 vehicles is located along Tower Road in Detroit Lakes.

PARK IT: Local places to picnic and play Detroit Lakes City Park, located at one end of the city’s mile-long beach on Detroit Lake, features a large playground for kids (plus another right across the street, near Washington Ballpark), a historic pavilion, multiple shelters and picnic areas, a bandshell, paved walkways, a disc golf course, tennis courts across the street, and more. Located not far from the downtown area, and within easy walking distance to an array of lakeside restaurants like Hub 41 and Zorbaz, this park is the premier place for outdoor events like concerts and festivals.

Detroit Lakes is also home to Peoples Park, located behind Zorbaz and home to the city’s new Pickleball Courts, as well as city parks at Long Lake and along the South Shore. There’s also a hard-to-miss Veterans Memorial Park right downtown on Highway 10, as well as a memorial park for Civil War Veterans, G.A.R. Outside of the city, Dunton Locks is a good place for a picnic, with multiple shelters and gathering spots, paved pathways for walking and biking, footbridges, fishing and more.

In Perham, Paul Miller Park, located north of town on Little Pine Lake, has picnic areas, a playground, paved pathways, water access and open spaces for play.

There’s also the residential County Pines Park, on Pine Needle Drive in Perham, and Arvig Park, just north of town; these also feature play areas and more. Krauss Park, on the Southwest side of Perham, is a large grassy block that contains playground equipment, a picnic area and flower gardens.

The state park nearest to both Detroit Lakes and Perham is Maplewood State Park. About a 30 minute drive away near Pelican Rapids, Maplewood features all the amenities of a state park, including recreation trails and paved paths, a beach area, multiple water accesses for boating, canoeing and kayaking, shelters and picnic areas, camping and occasional events. Dog Parks ▶ Wardale Dog Park, in Perham, is located right off of Highway 8 just north of town, near Arvig Park and Lakeside Golf Course. ▶ In Detroit Lakes, the city dog park is located in the industrial section of town, across the street from Lakeshirts, at 1023 10th Avenue SE. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week, and has separate areas for small and large dogs.

Skate Parks ▶ The Detroit Lakes Skate Park, at People’s Park on Phinney Avenue, is open from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day. ▶ Kowabunga Skate and Bike Park in Perham is just south of the softball fields along County Highway 51.

LAND & LAKES Golfing

Whether you’re looking for an easy evening game among friends, a competitive match, nine holes or 18, there’s something for every golfer in and around the Detroit Lakes and Perham areas. Five minutes from Detroit Lakes are the Detroit Country Club, Lakeview Golf Course, Forest Hills Golf Course, Maple Hills Golf Course and River Hills Golf Course. Of note is the week-long Pine to Palm Amateur Golf Tournament, one of Minnesota’s so-called “resort circuit” tourneys. Pine to Palm has been held at Detroit Country Club every August since 1932.

In Perham, Perham Lakeside Golf Club, offers three different courses with 27 holes of championship golf. A restaurant and event center are on site, at 320 17th Street NW.

Disc Golf

In Detroit Lakes, there’s a newer 18-hole course at Detroit Lakes City Park, a nine-hole course at Long Lake Park, and a homemade 9-hole course at Meadow Lake Campsite, south of town.

In Frazee, there’s a 9-hole course at Lion’s Park, just behind the World’s Largest Turkey sculpture.

In Perham, disc golf was recently added to the south end of Arvig Park, near the tennis courts. Parking is available on the grass field off 3rd Avenue NW and 6th Street NW. Arvig Park is located on County Road 51 on the north side of Perham.

LAND & LAKES ATVing

There are miles of ATV and OHV trails around Becker County, with the northeastern part of the county being a particular hotspot. The Forest Riders Trail in the Smoky Hills and Two Inlets State Forest is a 100-mile scenic ride through Becker and Hubbard counties, on terrain ranging from rolling and hilly to level and smooth. Some are joint trails that are used for snowmobiling in the winter.

A local ATV club, Woods-nWheels, helps maintain the trails, organizes group rides and overnight trips, and even offers personal guided rides for interested visitors. Contact the club by visiting the Woods and Wheels ATV Club Facebook page or woodsandwheelsatvclub.com.

THINGS TO DO ON WATER

Swimming, fishing, boating

The most popular public place to take a dip in the area is Detroit Lakes’ mile-long, sandy City Beach. It’s open to everyone, but dogs and alcohol are not allowed. The space is quick to fill with people in the summers, usually being the busiest during the hottest hours of the day. Tanning and swimming are always popular here, and boat rentals are available right on the beach, at J&K Marina, or a few miles east at the Holiday Inn Marina. A number of restaurants are just across the street from the beach, and food trucks and the Ice Cream Truck regularly visit the neighboring City Park.

Other public beaches in the area can be found at Middle Cormorant Lake, Eagle Lake, Town Lake, Wolf Lake and in Osage, Frazee, Vergas and Ottertail. Perham has a swimming beach at Paul Miller Park, north of town. Visit the Becker County Parks and Recreation website, or Otter Tail County website, for more information on these.

In addition, fishing is popular year-round here, whether it be from piers, boats, shorelines or fish houses. There are dozens of public water accesses across both Becker and Otter Tail counties; visit the county websites for maps and more information.

LAND & LAKES Tubing down the Otter Tail River

Charlie’s Tubing and K&K Tubing, located right next to each other on Highway 34 in Detroit Lakes, both offer rides down the Otter Tail River.

Tubes — for riders, dogs and coolers — as well as parking and rides to the river entrance, are provided by both businesses.

Rides down the river are about 2 hours long straight through, but many tubers like to stop at the popular sandbar along the way. Water shoes are recommended for firsttime tubers. You’ll also need to know how many drinks you have, and they need to be in aluminum cans. If you want to beat the crowds, go early or later in the afternoon, as prime time tends to be around 2 p.m.

TAKE IN A FREE OUTDOORS SHOW Bring your lawn chair or a blanket to sit on and park yourself in front of the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell for the Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series. These weekly outdoor concerts feature family-friendly performances by some of the area’s best musicians, playing every Tuesday in June through August. All concerts are free, with free will donations accepted. The music starts at 7 p.m. under the bandshell.

ENJOY A COUNTY FAIR The rides, the games, the entertainment, the animals, the displays – and let’s not forget about the food! What’s not to love about a good county fair? Detroit Lakes and Perham are each home to one, with the Becker County Fair held at the Detroit Lakes Fairgrounds (at the junction of Rossman Avenue and West Lake Drive) and the East Otter Tail County Fair held at the fairgrounds in Perham (at the end of 4th Street SE). PUTT AROUND There are plenty of greens to swing a club on around here, with more than 10 golf courses in the Detroit Lakes and Perham areas. Detroit Lakes is home to the Detroit Country Club, Lakeview Golf Course, Wildflower, and Forest Hills, to name a few. In Perham, there’s the Lakeside Golf Club, while Balmoral and Thumper Pond are just short drives south. Tee ‘em up!

ROLL INTO ROLLAG FOR SOME OLD-FASHIONED FUN Every year over Labor Day weekend, the tiny town of Rollag, 30 minutes west of Detroit Lakes, hosts a sprawling gathering of thousands of people, who convene in this out-of-the-way place for the annual Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion. The event is surprisingly huge, and hugely fun, with hundreds of classic steam engine demonstrations and exhibits spread over 210 rolling acres, along with play areas for kids, train rides around the grounds, and plenty of food booths. FEED THE ANIMALS The family-friendly Trowbridge Creek Zoo, located northwest of Vergas on County Highway 17, boasts a zebra, camels and kangaroos as well as parrots, elk, deer, wolves, porcupines, alligators and many more local and exotic animals – and people are encouraged to offer them some feed. A playground area for kids adds to the fun. The zoo is open every day of the week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and on weekends as weather permits before and after that. FEED YOUR BRAIN Now in its 29th year, the Great American ThinkOff, a nationally famous philosophy contest held in New York Mills, just down Highway 10 from Perham, will get folks thinking about, “Which should be more important: personal choice or social responsibility?”

Hosted by the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, this always-timely and thoughtprovoking event features a live debate with four of the nation’s top ‘armchair philosophers,’ and the audience picks the winner. This years’ debate will be held on Saturday, June 11.

FEAST ON SOME CAR CANDY FOR THE EYES Calling all classic car lovers: Detroit Lakes has the summer event for you! On the second Wednesday of every month in June, July, August and September, you can drive your favorite classic cruiser to Detroit Lakes’ West Lake Drive for an evening on the City Beach from 4-8:30 p.m. Don’t have a classic car? That’s okay, just come see the variety on display. More than 200 vehicles have been known to gather along the city’s mile-long beach for these fun monthly events.

RACE A TURTLE The small town of Perham has a big love for turtles. Every Wednesday, all summer long, the community hosts International Turtle Races at its downtown turtle park, from 10 a.m. to noon. Kids and families bring their own turtles to race, or borrow one from the city at the races. The turtles line up in a circle, and at the word ‘go’ they’re released and cheered on as they make their way toward the center. The first one to get there, wins! The big summer festival in Perham, Turtle Fest, is a grand extension of the races, and features a wide variety of family-friendly events over multiple days. This year’s Turtle Fest is happening June 15-19.

GET PICKIN’ Located five miles south of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59, the Shady Hollow Flea Market is open every weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The market is the biggest around, with more than 100 vendors, plenty of free parking, food and beverages sold on site, and live entertainment a common occurrence.
