etroit Mountain Recreation Area is going big with this summer’s Music on the Mountain fundraiser — Big & Rich,

that is. The hit-making country music duo — best known for their fun and catchy tune, “Save A Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” — will be rocking an outdoor set at the foot of the mountain on Saturday, July 7. year before that it was Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. “Now this year, we just keep stepping it up a notch,” said Megan Smith, guest services manager at Detroit Mountain. “We’re going big with Big & Rich.” As of late May, more than 1,000 tickets had already been sold for the concert — more than were ever sold in any of the previous years — and organizers believed they’d have no trouble selling another 1,500 by the night of the show, making it a sold-out performance. Jeff Staley, Detroit Mountain’s gen-

eral manager, said they were able to get Big & Rich thanks to the help of a local “friend of the mountain” who has connections in the country music business through a past involvement with WE Fest. They reached out to a number of possible bands, Staley said, ultimately deciding on Big & Rich because of their reputation as crazy crowd-pleasers on stage. “We thought they would bring some good energy for this event,” he said. Besides that everybody-knows-it “Save a Horse” hit, Big & Rich have had

many other Top 40 chart-toppers, such as “Lost in this Moment,” “Look At You,” “Holy Water,” “That’s Why I Pray” and more. “Big” is actually Big Kenny, and “Rich” is John Rich, both of whom are songwriters, singers and guitarists. They’ll be performing at the mountain with Cowboy Troy, a distinctive country rapper who has charted twice on the Billboard country singles charts. “Big & Rich have played at WE Fest in the past, so local country fans will be very familiar with them and the kind of show they put on — really upbeat, interactive, and getting the crowd involved,” said Staley. Organizers are hoping to capitalize on the duo’s energy and popularity, as well as the earlier-than-usual date for the concert. In the past, Music on the

Mountain has been held in August, but the date was moved up this year to accommodate Big & Rich’s tour schedule — a move that may prove beneficial for ticket sales, as the July 7 show falls on the Fourth of July weekend, a busy weekend for tourism.

OTHER SUMMER EVENTS AT THE MOUNTAIN Music on the Mountain may be the biggest event of the summer out at Detroit Mountain, but it’s not the only thing worth your time and attention. There are plenty of other fun reasons to visit. ► On Friday, June 29, the mountain will play host to the local Kiwanis Club’s Blues, Beer & BBQ event. It’ll be just what it sounds like — a night full of soul-grabbing blues music, cold beer and tasty barbeque. Minnesota blues legend Lamont Cranston will headline, starting at 10 p.m., with classic Chicago blues artists Reverend Raven and the Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys revving up the crowd at 8 p.m. The local Matt Aakre trio will kick off the entertainment at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., special guest Adam Thielen, a Vikings Pro Bowler and Detroit Lakes native, will make an appearance and take audience questions. A live auction will take place at 9:30 p.m. All events will take place outdoors, rain or shine, on the east end of the lawn near the lodge. Ski lifts will be running until 8 p.m. People are also welcome to hike and bike the Detroit Mountain grounds. Kiwanis members will be serving BBQ ribs, brisket and pulled pork with all the fixings from 5-8 p.m, and additional food trucks will also be on site. Concert funds have also been used to upgrade the mountain’s bunny hill tow rope to “magic carpets,” and to relocate the tubing hill. Funds from this year’s show will be used for upgrades to Detroit Mountain’s snowmaking system, so artificial snow can be made faster and more efficiently, making it possible for the mountain to be open for skiing on more days of the year. Big & Rich, along with Cowboy Troy, are the headliners for Music on the Mountain, but there will be plenty of other entertainment — and lots of food and drinks around — to keep people happy before and after that.

Matt Aakre, the former frontman of the popular Moorhead-based country-rock band 32 Below, will be bringing his former bandmates back together to open for Big & Rich, and they’ll also play inside the lodge for an afterparty following the show. For years, 32 Below dominated the Fargo-Moorhead bar scene, winning Best Live Local Act every year for a decade in the Fargo Forum’s annual reader’s poll, and also toured and established a fan base around the country. Aakre left the group in 2012 to spend more time with his family, focus on his day job in agronomy sales, and play more intimate solo shows at small venues around the region. Funds raised will go to the Kiwanis Club’s Technical Scholarship Fund for students interested in attending M-State, as well as to various youth-focused programs in the Lakes Area. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce, from any local Kiwanis member and online at www.eventbrite.com. ► Every Thursday evening in July and August, Detroit Mountain staff members will lead guided group rides on the mountain biking trails there. Rides will take off from the lodge at 6 p.m. and will generally last about an hour; however, the length and route of each ride will vary depending on the ability of the riders who take part. The bike rental shop will be open late on Thursdays to accommodate those in need of rentals, and lift service will be open from 4-8 p.m. for those who want to do some downhill mountain biking. Great North Pizza will be served in the lodge after the group rides. ► Sometime in August — visit the Detroit Mountain website at detroitmountain.com for the most current information — the mountain will be holding a Gravel Race. Open to mountain bikers of all skill levels, this race will take people on gravel roads around the Detroit Mountain area. A less technical race, it’s really meant as a fun excuse to get people out for a group ride. Pizza and drinks will follow in the lodge. ► On Saturday, September 22, the mountain will host 5K and 10K trail running races put on by the Detroit Lakes Community Center. Registration will be available through the Center. ► Then, on Sunday, September 30, about 800 high school student mountain bike riders from across Minnesota will compete in a composite teams race through the Minnesota High School Cycling League. More than 60 teams, including the local team of kids from Detroit Lakes, Park Rapids, North Dakota, Wadena and the surrounding area, will compete. Spectators are welcome. Smith said there would be four different food trucks coming from Fargo to serve up some tasty treats during the concert: Potato Brothers, which sells all sorts of different potato-based foods; Pico, a made-from-scratch taco joint; The Dog Father, which specializes in Chicago-style hotdogs; and Twisted Spork Mobile Food, a hand-tossed pizza and build-

your-own burger stand with some healthy salad and gluten-free options. There will likely be a couple of dessert-style trucks at the concert, as well. Beer, wine and liquor will be sold throughout the event, and the ski lifts will be running well into the night to offer people scenic rides. “We’re excited,” said Smith. “We’re ready.” “It should be a really fun night,” added Staley.

SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH ‘MACBETH’

fter the fast-and furious humor of last summer’s romantic comedy, “Much Ado About Nothing,” Detroit Lakes’ Shakespeare in the Park troupe has opted for something decidedly less laughter-filled for its 10th anniversary: the epic tragedy of “Macbeth.” The production makes its debut at the City Park Bandshell on Thursday, June 21, with additional performances set for June 22, 23, 29 and 30 as well as July 1. Aside from the Sunday, July 1 presentation, which will be a 4 p.m. matinee, all other performances will start at 7 p.m. “It runs roughly 90 minutes, with no intermission,” says the play’s director, Nikki Caulfield, noting that she has adapted the script slightly to make it a little more audience friendly. “I tried to make the language a little more concise, and cut out some of the confusing references.” PAGE 12 | SUMMER SCENE | JULY 2018

Though the play is set in Scotland, Caulfield adds, “there are no kilts or Scottish accents — sorry!” Audiences should, however, look for references to another historic culture that has local significance: “It’s set in about 900 A.D.,” Caulfield says. “They’re fighting off Vikings at the start of the show.” And yes, that does mean there are some sword fights — “though not as many as you might expect,” Caulfield says. “And they’re using 44-inch, two-handed broadswords. These are big weapons (though strictly theatrical props, of course).” Caulfield, whose “day job” is running her own customized clothing and alterations business, Skirting the Rules, designs the costumes herself. The actors mostly rehearse in street clothes, to avoid damage to the costume garments. Just like the public performances, all rehearsals are held at the bandshell, Caulfield notes.

“It helps to prepare them for the live performances,” she explains, adding that outdoor theater produces some unique challenges that can’t be replicated in an indoor setting. “Anything can happen — and it does,” she says. “One time we had some dogs come up on stage and lick the actors. And then there are the motorcycles and the cars (driving through the park) — and the squirrels. It’s better for them to get used to these random distractions now.” Another thing the actors have to get used to is projecting their voices so they can be heard above the ambient noise of an outdoor setting. “We don’t use any mics,” Caulfield says. “We tried that the first year, with hanging microphones, but it just did not work.” Instead, she adds, “We work on being loud. But you (i.e., the audience) do

have to listen. We ask people to sit close to the stage.” Because seating at the bandshell is limited, audiences are asked to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to watch the show. All cell phones should be turned off, or at least down, for the duration — and if someone has to take a call, they should do so at a respectful distance from the stage area. Shakespeare in the Park performances are free and open to the public. Parents of young children should consider the subject matter when deciding whether to take the whole family to see the show. “There’s fighting, there’s witches and supernatural elements,” Caulfield cautions — and of course, there’s more than just a death or two, including some of the main characters. “Elizabethans loved

their revenge tragedies,” she adds. “But there’s a reason why this play has remained so popular. It’s a really solid script. It’s so exciting, and there’s really no break in the action until the end — which is one of the reasons why there is no intermission. There’s really no place for one.” Cast members, who are a dozen or so local actors, range a bit in age, though most are at least 18. “There’s one 10-year-old who has a couple of small roles,” Caulfield says, adding, “This is an excellent cast — one of the strongest we’ve had, I think, top to bottom. The staff at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge are happy to answer questions and help guests make the most of their visits. The center features interactive exhibits and opportunities to learn about Tamarac’s many species of wildlife and their diverse habitats, as well as the historical use of the refuge by Ojibwe Indians and early European settlers. There are also weekly programs for kids and families in the summers, as well as other occasional special programs, and nature movies on Sundays. The Visitor Center is located about a 25-minute drive northeast of Detroit Lakes, at 35704 County Highway 26, Rochert, MN 56578. WATCH FOR WILDLIFE.

Look for deer fawns hiding behind their mothers, bear cubs exploring their new world and eaglets demanding to be fed. Be on the lookout for otters playing, beavers chewing, foxes prowling and rabbits running. Listen for songbirds as they settle in for the summer season. At Tamarac, the wildlife is left undisturbed, and many viewing opportunities exist. The best times for viewing are around sunrise and sunset, but even afternoon visits can be rewarding for quiet, watchful observers. Increase your chances of seeing wildlife by exploring the edges of lakes, marshes and meadows. WITNESS THE FLORA.

See and smell the vibrant colors and fragrances of summer woodland wildflowers, including the Canada anemone, Joe Pye weed, and wild geraniums. If you feel inclined to exercise, hike the 2-mile-long Old Indian Hiking Trail to experience the beauty of the maple basswood forest. Another option is to venture out on the North Country Trail, which traverses 14 miles through the southern half of the refuge. Everywhere you look at Tamarac, there are trees, bushes, flowers and other plants to identify and enjoy. GO FISHING.

Try your luck in one of Tamarac’s five fishing lakes. There are many varieties of fish to be caught, including crappie, walleye, sunfish, northern pike and bass. A fishing map and regulations can be obtained at the refuge information kiosks or the Visitor Center. PAGE 14 | SUMMER SCENE | JULY 2018

LOON CALLS A FAMILIAR, FAVORITE SOUND IN THE LAKES AREA BY CRISTINA STAHL For Summer Scene

There is probably nothing more distinctive in the northern wilderness than the haunting call of the loon. Minnesota has more common loons than any other state in the U.S. except Alaska, with approximately 12,000 loons summering in Minnesota every year. Around Detroit Lakes, where lakes, wetlands and other waterways abound, the calls of loons can be heard far and wide, all season long. For many in the Lakes Area, it’s a familiar and favorite sound of summer. The loon has four basic calls, with variations of each. There’s the “remolo,” which sounds like quivering laughter — that’s a sound of alarm and aggression. Then there’s the “wail,” a long, lonely call used to communicate over distance. The “yodel” is used by males to guard their territories. And finally, there’s the “hoot,” a shorter call used to communicate with the young. Loons start appearing on area lakes and setting up their territories just after the winter thaw. Males arrive first, with the females soon following. After finding their mates, loons of mating age — three and four years old — build nests together along shorelines or on floating bogs. Females lay one to three eggs, and then they and their partners take turns keeping the eggs warm

until they hatch, which takes about 30 days. The young hatch ready to swim, but are often carried on the adults’ backs to avoid predators like snapping turtles and northern pike. They’ll begin to fly at two months of age. Loons’ bodies are made for water. Their torpedo shape is extremely efficient for swimming, and their legs are set far back to serve as oars. Their feet are webbed, and unlike most other birds, which have hollow bones to make flying easier, loons’ bones are dense, allowing them to dive up to 250 feet below the surface in search of fish. Their heavy bodies require long “runways’ for takeoff (100 feet or more). Quiet lakes at least seven acres in size are best suitable for loons. A loon’s coloration is also an adaptation for survival. Their light coloration on their bellies make them less visible to fish, allowing them to sneak up and catch their prey. The loon’s characteristic red eye filters light, allowing the bird to see better underwater. The Ojibwe people of the Northwoods call the loon “mang,” meaning “most handsome of birds.” See this striking Minnesota state bird, and hear its beloved calls, around area lakes this summer, or visit Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to more than 60 loons. CELEBRATES 40 YEARS

xperience more than 100 art and craft booths, live music, fair-style food and more at the annual Art in the Park event at Detroit Lakes City Park on Sunday, July 22. Now in its 40th year, Art in the Park is for artists and art-lovers alike. There is no admission fee, it is family-friendly, and there will be a lot going on. Art in the Park started in 1978, when Sally Oja, then-president of the Detroit

Lakes Library Board, and other board members wanted to come up with a fun way to raise money for programming and materials at the library. The event turned out to be a huge success. “It was a good project — it kept going. More people would come. We finally got to the point that it became too much work because so many places were coming to set up a stall,” Oja says. Once the event outgrew what the library board was capable of, they decid-

ed to hand it over to the city. Today, the Chamber of Commerce is in charge of organizing Art in the Park. “It was quite an adventure — there were some people that were afraid to try something new, but it ended up working out really well,” Oja recalls. “It has been good for Detroit Lakes overall.” Art in the Park will take place rain or shine. As of the beginning of June, nearly 80 percent of the available booth

space had already been rented out, and more vendors were still expected to get on board. Vendors usually include authors, woodworkers, textile artists, painters, fabric artisans and more.
