Typically a 10-day event, the Water Carnival is a celebration of the Lakes Area’s finest feature -- water. The many games, competitions and other events that are always a part of the Water Carnival all feature water in some way, with most taking place on the water, in the water, or right next to it, on the City Beach.

Those who partake in a Water Carnival event can expect to get wet, at least a little. Even the pinnacle Parade of the Northwest has water as a central feature, with squirt guns

and water balloons frequently aimed at both participants and paradegoers.

The Water Carnival is organized by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees, a nonprofit group of young individuals working to benefit the community.

“We try to put on as many events as possible to engage the community, which, therefore, allows us to use any money for a variety of services which are used to help families in need, fund scholarships, provide free events for the community to enjoy, etc.,” says Kate Spaeth, former President of the Jaycees. “This event is a true testament to how devoted our members are. They will give all they have to make sure that everyone has a wonderful time, even though the 10 days will bring us all to an understandable state of exhaustion. I am very proud of all of our members volunteering their time and taking pride in what they do.”

The Jaycees have heard great things from the public about the Water Carnival, with some people planning their summer vacations around it because it’s become such a tradition for them.

She’s a past Rotary board member, past United Way President, past Relay for Life co-chair, and current volunteer for First Lutheran Church, Salvation Army Red Kettle, the local food pantry and DLHS Academy.

Burhans is known for her highly energetic, positive personality and loves to meet new people and connect them with ways to become involved in the community.

She has also been instrumental in involving her co-workers in opportunities to better the community. She says her boss, Steve Daggett, embraces community and allows his Midwest Bank employees to have an active role in meeting community needs.

“At Midwest Bank we have an expectation that our employees give back to the communities we operate in,” says Daggett. “No one in our organization does that better than Jessica. We are very proud of how she represents our bank.”

The resource center provides counseling and support to help victims identify and assert their rights, navigate the criminal justice system, and locate and obtain any other services they may need to ease the impact of their victimization.

The center offers a 24-hour crisis hotline, makes personal advocacy and counseling referrals, and offers support groups for children dealing with abuse, divorce, foster care, anger management and other high-risk situations. It also provides assistance with harassment restraining orders and orders for protection.

The team at Lakes Crisis is tight-knit and works together to ensure they’re meeting clients wherever they’re at in that

moment, emotionally and physically.

Client feedback is consistently positive, with evaluations revealing that clients feel heard, validated and have a better understanding of what to expect and how to move forward after visiting the center. Many report an increased sense of safety, as well.

“I’m grateful for the guidance on what to do to protect myself and my children,” stated a recent client in an

evaluation. “The support system here and the people have saved my life and my children’s.”

She has over 20 years of experience working as a bartender and server in Medina, N.D. “About five years ago I left my corporate job in sales at a large restaurant food distributor and moved to Detroit Lakes to be closer to my daughter,” she says, adding about her job at Sunlite: “I enjoy the people I work with and have made lots of friends with customers.

Some people think I am funny, and I believe customers enjoy interacting with me because of that. I like to call customers by name and learn a bit about their stories.”

Jensen goes on to say that, “This should really be a team award because we have a great team and we all work well together. We are known at Sunlite for the best burgers and affordable prices. It’s a great family place; it’s my granddaughter’s favorite restaurant!”

Jensen’s employer, Wayne Crawford, says she has a great knack for getting to know her customers within the first few minutes of meeting them. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to jump in and assist other teammates if needed.

“She truly creates a great team atmosphere and is the first person to lift everyone up after a busy shift,” Crawford says.

When Jensen is not at work, she enjoys barrel racing with her daughter and granddaughter, trail riding in Medora with her crew, and going on adventures with the Jr. Explorers Club (with her grandkids).

A 2015 graduate of the Royal Veterinary College in London, England, Brosius then traveled back to the States and practiced in Duluth, Minn., at an urgent care practice before joining the team at Detroit Lakes Animal Hospital in 2017.

It is also nice to start seeing clients back in the clinic as we start to transition to a semi-open state with the pandemic.
