Semifinalists dueling for first P to P titles BY ROBERT WILLIAMS

The top golfer of the four remaining Pine to Palm semifinalists will add a new name to the 83rd annual tournament trophy with a pair of wins on Sunday. Tony Vincelli enters semifinal play with the most final round experience as a two-time runnerup in 1996 and 2000 breaking a 14-year drought since his last appearance. Vincelli took out Will Czeh, the giant killer, who defeated the defending champion Ben Welle Friday. The final match score was 2&1 Vincelli. The pair traded a 1-up lead through the first eight holes before Czeh pushed it to 2-up on 10 and 13. Vincelli evened the match on 15, and pushed it to 1-up on 16 to seal the match.

He met a very experienced Pine to Palmer in Vincelli and that experience proved to be a difference maker. “Definitely, I think it’s stuff that you learn as you play rounds of golf and my cousin and I were talking on the way back this morning,” Vincelli said. “He lost, but we were looking back when we were in high school, that 16 to 19 age, and how much pressure we put on ourselves. At the end of the day, now I treat it more like we have family up here and fun, but there’s also a golf tournament. I think that helps.” Vincelli took time to have some fun between his two rounds Saturday. “Today after the first match I went home and hopped on the Jet Ski with the kids, cousins and my brother and came back here and got ready to go,” he said.

“The final turning point was on 14,” Vincelli said. Czeh hit a great tee shot that was assumed close to the pin from the tee box view. Vincelli’s drive missed into a bunker with a funky lie forcing him to hit the ball straight out from his body. Czeh’s ball ended up long. Vincelli managed to knock his ball to four feet from an odd stance, while Czeh’s chip shot failed him. “When you’re leaving the tee box thinking he’s probably going to win the hole and he would have gone 3-up there,” Vincelli said. “I think that rattled him a little bit and he made some bogeys coming in. I made some good shots and made par.” Coming off a huge win over Welle, Czeh could have easily folded under too many expectations, but he squashed any of that with a 2&1 win over Ryan
Vincelli will face Alexander Kline of Sandy, Utah. “Alex was playing well,” Vincelli said. “He wasn’t making bogeys and then he started making birdies.” Kline cruised in his quarterfinal match defeating Andrew Israelson of Staples 5&4. Israelson got off to a shaky start missing greens in regulation and Kline made him pay winning six of the first seven holes to lead 6-up at the turn. “I have to play better,” Vincelli said of his match with Kline. “I have to play like I did this morning to have a chance.” The other semifinal features Golden Gopher Charlie Duensing and Jack Elliott. Duensing trailed his entire quarterfinal match with 2012 champion Beau Hanson but managed to square it

Hanson also had plenty of momentum after taking out medalist Grady Meyer 3 & 1 in the round of 16. Duensing was the benefactor of a rare error from Hanson on the No. 1 green in extra time as the former champ chipped from the fringe and lost the match with a two-putt.
Elliott and 2011 champion Connor Holland traded the first two holes of their quarterfinal match before Holland grabbed a quick 3-up lead by the fifth hole. Holland led 1-up at the turn and at the 11th hole, Elliott evened the match and took over leading to a 2-up victory. “Connor was pretty hot early on and I was trying to stay focused on my game and I felt like a couple shots would come to me after I got into the round a little bit,” Elliott said. “Luckily, it did. I turned it on right after the fifth hole.” The 11th hole was the unlikely turning point in the match after a poor tee shot from Elliott and an average shot to the green. “I got lucky and made a bomb,” he said of his putt. “I felt the momentum go my way a little bit.” Saturday’s breezy conditions proved to be a test for Elliott. “The wind out here is always swirling, so it tests your patience a little bit,” he said. “I had a good caddie today; he was able to help me out.” The Pine to Palm championship semifinals get underway at 8 a.m., with the finals mid-afternoon. Spriggs and Uithoven in a battle for Mid-Am hardware BY ROBERT WILLIAMS

Scott Uithoven looks to sweep the Pine to Palm Mid-Am division after winning medalist honors in qualifying and punching his ticket to the championship match. “Trying to do both in one year; that would be a neat accomplishment,” Uithoven said. Uithoven shot 69-71 for a score of two-under 140 to win the qualifying portion of the tournament by four strokes. Saturday, he won his semifinal match 3&2 over 2013 Mid-Am champion Perry Piatz. “I played well today,” Uithoven said. “I made four or five birdies and got off to a good start.” Uithoven, from Mississippi, is playing in only his second Pine to Palm after heeding the advice to come to Detroit Lakes from his brother Paul, a 16-year veteran of the tournament. Paul comes to the tournament with Scott Linnerooth, a veteran of 34 Pine to Palms, and the 2014 Senior champion. Linnerooth was on the bag for Uithoven during Saturday’s semifinal. “Hopefully, it’s an annual deal,” Uithoven said. “Everybody is so nice. Everybody you play with is so enjoyable. It’s just a good week. It’s almost like a reunion every year. They treat us well. It’s a great tournament.” Wind was somewhat of a factor for Uithoven, but he mastered it to put the semifinal away on hole No. 16. “The right to left didn’t bother me so much, but into the wind and downwind it was a little tough to pick the right club,” he said. “It played a little bit different. Obviously, the course is firming up
with the wind; it changes it a little bit. Coming out of the other semifinal bracket is the defending champion, 2013 medalist and 2012 runner-up Kent Spriggs looking to take home more Pine to Palm hardware. Spriggs defeated Perham’s Bob Cavanagh 1-up on the second extra hole in a rematch of the 2014 Mid-Am championship. Both golfers missed birdie chances on the first extra hole. Spriggs was on the green in regulation on the second extra hole; Cavanagh was a bit to the right of the green. Cavanagh failed to get up and down, allowing Spriggs to twoputt for the victory. “It was kind of a fun day; I’ve played with Bob so he knows my game and I know his game,” said Spriggs. “I wasn’t really nervous, at all; it was just kind of fun.” Cavanagh gave Spriggs reason to be nervous with a three-hole string of birdies on the back nine on 11, 12 and 13 to go 2-up. “I made a couple really good sand saves to stay in it, and was lucky enough to get to extra holes,” said Spriggs. The greens have been less than friendly to Spriggs who lipped out a number of putts and missed a chance to win on 18 as his putt slid by the right side of the cup. “Lot of pars, a few birdies, seriously, I birdied five — it was the only putt over 10 feet I’ve made in three days,” said Spriggs. “I haven’t putted very well, so I’m kind of surprised I’m still here.” Spriggs is back looking for a second straight championship. He will tee off with Uithoven at 12:40 p.m.

Filled with adrenaline, the hunters forgot about how cold and tired they were. The hunters were happy and relieved knowing there would be meat on the table for their families the coming winter.

A pair of first-time finalists will face off in the Pine to Palm Seniors championship match Sunday afternoon. Marc Redman defeated Neil Braaten 4&3 to advance, while Keith Aasen defeated Pine to
Palm veteran Jim Strandemo 1-up in extra holes. “We both hit good drives; Jim pushed his second shot to the right in the tree line a little bit but hit a great pitch to sixfeet and I hit a good drive in the fairway and hybrid to the fringe to chip to three feet,” Aasen said about the extra
hole. Strandemo’s putt did not fall and Aasen sunk his threefooter for the win. Aasen and Redman have seen each other on the course this week, so both will know what to expect from the other in Sunday’s championship, which tees off at 12:30 p.m.
“I played with him Thursday,” Aasen said. “He hits it a mile.” Aasen’s approach to the final is to enjoy it. “Just going to have fun,” he said. “I had no expectations when I came here. Redman overcame a couple rough holes at the start of his
round but quickly got up to speed into a solid mode of consistent play. “I just played a steady round of golf,” he said. “I started with a couple bogeys, but I was 3-4 under from there, SENIORS to page 7 ➤

Super Senior final a tiebreaker for Krueger and Renner BY ROBERT WILLIAMS

The Pine to Palm Super Seniors championship final is about as intriguing a matchup as could have been planned with the only two men to win
titles squared up against each other. Chuck Renner will be going for his fifth consecutive championship and his opponent, Paul Krueger of Detroit Lakes, will be going for his second. Krueger defeated Renner in
the inaugural Super Seniors final in 2010, since then the Pine to Palm has been owned by Renner. “That’s a big if,” said Renner. “Paul’s a very good player and a very good putter and that’s what it takes.”
Renner advanced with a 3&2 semifinal victory over William Hawkins. “He played pretty well,” Renner said. “He had a few struggles, but we all did that.” Hawkins led for portions of the round but Renner’s consistent play and ability to stay out of the rough and trouble was enough for victory.
“It was one of these days if I could hit fairways and greens I’d be okay, because of the wind, and sure enough that was what did it,” Renner said. Renner also spent some time working on his swing after Friday’s round to come out SUPER SENIORS to page 7 ➤

He followed that up with birdies on six, seven, 11 and 12 to take the lead. Redman lived in Oklahoma for 20 years and went to college down south making Sunday’s 20 mph winds a non-factor for his play. “Even though I’m a high ball hitter, I almost felt like the wind was to my advantage,” he said. Redman is pleased to be in the championship match and hopes to take the solid play he had on Saturday and use it for a big win Sunday. “Oh yeah, it’s exciting,” he said. “Just trying to play my game — steady golf and make some birdies here and there and see what we can do.” Redman and Aasen represent the middle of the pack of 16 in terms of seeding. Redman was seeded No. 8, Aasen at No. 7.
➤ SUPER SENIORS from page 6 with an effective swing plan for Saturday. “I spent some time trying to figure out what was wrong with the swing and was able to analyze it correctly and went over to the range this morning early and confirmed it and it was good,” he said. Krueger defeated the No. 4 seed Doug Gillund 1-up in a tightly contested seesaw match that went the distance. “All day we tried to give it back to each other,” Krueger said. The match came down to the final putt, a Krueger par on the 18th green. “I should have lost to him on 15, but he just kept giving it back,” Krueger said. Sunday’s final will feature the hometown hero versus the streaking undefeated man from Arizona,
both very interesting characters that should provide an entertaining match for the spectators. Krueger has some practice rounds in mind before that. “I’m going to be at the range until two in the morning because I’ve got to play Chuck Renner again,” Krueger joked. “He’s so good he can beat you with a bad thumb. He just continues to be so good.” Krueger’s strategy for the final is a simple one and that’s to play alongside Renner and try to find opportunities to score. “He’s just consistent all the time,” Krueger said. “He never makes mistakes. He’s not punching out of the rough. You just have to stay steady with him. That’s all you can do and hope a putt drops once in a while.” The pair also met in the 2012 final. Sunday will break the one-all tie in the final between the two golfers.
Tourney stalwart Tom Hanson will be missed Tom Hanson, Detroit Lakes resident and founder of Zorbaz restaurants, passed away on Friday, Aug. 14. Tom, a lifelong promoter of golf in the Detroit Lakes area, played in 39 Pine to Palm tournaments. In 2007, the Pine to Palm Committee presented the John Rutledge Memorial Award in recognition of sportsmanship and his commitment and service to the tournament. Tom was a co-founder of the hugely popular Pizza Masterz tournament, which has been played at the Detroit Country Club since 1974. Proceeds for the tournament have been used to develop and maintain Pizza Masterz Park, which is located just across the street from the 16th green.
