AUDUBON The city of Audubon is located on Highway 10 approximately 40 miles east of Fargo, ND, and 210 miles northwest of Minneapolis, MN. Situated in the southwest corner of Becker County, it developed as a result of the 1871 expansion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Audubon was established as a community in 1873; it was settled mainly by farmers of Scandinavian descent. The town was named after the great American naturalist and artist, James A. Audubon. During an early tour of the “Audubon’’ branch of the NP line, a passenger, Audubon’s niece, commented on the beauty of the lily-covered prairie and asked that if a railroad station were ever built there, that it be named after her uncle. While searching for a township name, the Audubon name suggestion seemed to stick, and on Jan. 2, 1881, it became the official town name. Today, Audubon is home to not only Lake Park-Audubon Elementary School, but also Team Industries and other industries, as well as the Orton’s convenience store, Aurochs Veterinary Service, JCS Cabinetry & Design and Country Wood Products. Audubon also maintains a post office, a co-op elevator, a municipal liquor store, a bank (Bell State Bank & Trust of Audubon), a meat market (Audubon Meat Inc.), and the Zephyr Supper Club. Audubon’s volunteer fire department provides service for Audubon City and the townships of Lake Eunice, Audubon and a portion of Hamden Township. Audubon Rescue: Don Holm, President Audubon Rescue serves the same area as the fire department. CALLAWAY Callaway is located about 12 miles north of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59, approximately 45 air miles east of Fargo. It’s situated in Becker’s northwest corner, along the Soo Line Railroad’s “Glenwood route’’ — a section of track between Winnipeg and Minneapolis. The small farming communities of Richwood and Westbury lie within a 5 mile radius of Callaway. As the Soo Line pushed northward in 1903, the Callaway community developed. Callaway’s rich farmland attracted many early Scandinavian settlers who were interested in farming its fertile tracts of land. Today, agriculture remains Callaway’s main economic resource. Besides its own community center, Callaway is also home to Beautiful Savior Lutheran and Assumption Catholic churches, a volunteer fire department, Lions Club, Community Council, post office, municipal liquor store, Native Harvest, Noah’s Insurance, On the Go Convenience Store, Tungesvick Service Station, Cenex Harvest States elevator and Anderson Ag Services. DETROIT LAKES Detroit Lakes was originally home of the Sioux, until the Chippewa pushed them westward. During the mid 1800s, Detroit Lakes was a favorite resting place for travelers of the Red River Oxcart Trail, a 400 mile path from Winnipeg to St. Paul. For many years, the resting place was called “Ga-ia-wa-wan-gag’’ : a Chippewa name meaning, “Lake in which there is a crossing in a sandy place.’’ Settlers, having trouble pronouncing that name, preferred a traveling French priest’s description of the sandy place; he called it “Detroit,’’ using the French word for sand bar. The name stuck. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Detroit Lakes had an estimated population of 8,569 residents. Today, Detroit Lakes is an important agricultural area; it is also the center of a thriving “412 Lakes’’ tourism district. Besides providing a strong educational system for its residents, Detroit Lakes is home to many different churches, industrial parks and a variety of retail businesses. OGEMA Ogema is located on Becker County’s northern most boundary on Minnesota Highway 59. It’s approximately 21 miles due north of Detroit Lakes. Ogema was founded in 1906, nearly 40 years after the establishment of the surrounding White Earth Reservation; its name, however, means “Chief’’ in the Chippewa language. miles east of Fargo and 215 miles northwest of Minneapolis. With gentle rolling hills and an elevation of 1270 ft., Lake Park is a fertile farm area producing grain, potatoes, and livestock. Lake Park was named for a beautiful lake which used to be located on the original townsite. In the early 1870s, this lake was drained, however, to allow for the building of the NP Railroad. Although the lake was lost forever, the railroad stimulated Lake Park’s growth as settlers took advantage of its easy transportation to the region. Today, Lake Park is home to many area businesses. Besides a health clinic, community cooperative, drug store, hair salons, grocery store, laundromat, municipal liquor store, bank, city center, and public pool, the Lake Park community includes a variety of churches, including St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Lake Park Lutheran Church, the Gloria Dei Lutheran Parish and Eskjo Lutheran Church. The community also boasts three gas stations and a Lake Agassiz Regional Library LINK site. It is also home to Lake Park-Audubon High School.

FRAZEE The city of Frazee is located at the junction of Highway 10 and Minnesota State Highway 87, approximately in the center of Becker County’s southernmost border; it is approximately 10 miles southeast of Detroit Lakes; 55 miles east of Fargo, and 195 miles northwest of Minneapolis. Frazee was settled in 1868, earning it the distinction of being the first area settled in Becker County. When the Hobart Depot and Weymouth Hotel moved to Frazee in 1874, the city of Frazee developed quickly. (It was said the food at the Weymouth was so good, that the NP Line scheduled regular stops to partake in its culinary delights.) The combination of the depot, a lucrative flour mill, and a booming logging industry, Frazee was Becker County’s largest city until the logging “boom’’ fizzled out at the turn of the century. At its peak, however, Frazee’s population climbed a little over 2000 in the late 1880s. Today, Frazee is home to many businesses. Daggett Trucking, the Frazee Municipal Liquor Store, Frazee Event Center, Ketter’s Meat Market, and O.K. Lumber are just a few examples of Frazee’s thriving busi-

It is located in the center of Becker County’s western border, with the Smoky Hills State Forest providing its backyard. Today, Osage is governed by a town board and its school age children are bussed to the Park Rapids School District. Osage is located within Osage Township and maintains a grocery store (Osage Country Market), community center and post office. PONSFORD Ponsford is located on Becker County’s eastern boarder at the intersection of County Road 129 and a small section of Minnesota Highway 225. Ponsford is a rich farm ing community, maintaining a post office, trading post, and hardware store. Service organizations include: Northern Lights 4-H Club, a volunteer fire department (Carsonville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department), and the Helping Hand Club — a local organization devoted to helping the area’s poor and needy. Established in 1944, the organization is still going strong, “Doing unto others, as we would have others do unto us.’’

TWO INLETS Two Inlets is located on Becker County’s eastern border. Nestled quietly in Becker’s forest district, it is approximately 10 miles north of Osage and 12 miles northeast of Ponsford on County Road 44. The Two Inlets area was once a center of the thriving 1880s logging boom. Today, Two Inlets maintains a resort, sawmill, country store, Catholic church and town hall. WHITE EARTH The community of White Earth is located within the White Earth Indian Reservation. It is located approximately 22 miles north of Detroit Lakes at the intersection of County Road 23 and Minnesota Hwy. 224. The village of White Earth is governed by a community council. The council members are elected for two year terms and help facilitate community projects through fund raising efforts. White Earth village also maintains its own post office and ambulance service. WOLF LAKE Wolf Lake is located about three miles north of State Highway 87, in the corner of the Smoky Hills State Forest. Detroit Lakes is 32 miles due west of the village which was settled mainly as a logging camp site. After the great forests of Minnesota had been exploited by big lumbering companies, Wolf Lake turned to farming. Today, Wolf Lake maintains many organizations including: VFW, VFW Auxiliary, Lions Club, and Wolf Pack Baseball Club as well as Wolf Pack Snowmobile Club, Wolf Lake Shooting Club and Wolf Sportsmen’s Club. Businesses include the Lakes Area Cooperative, Ray’s Repair and the Wolf Lake Municipal Liquor Store.

OUTLYING COMMUNITIES HITTERDAL, located in Clay County, was incorporated as a village on April 1, 1918, and separated from the townships on May 3, 1919. It is named for a valley and lake in southern Norway. Among the first settlers were several people named Hitterdal. The town was named for Bendt O. Hitterdal, the original town proprietor. The post office began in 1887; M. J. Solum built a hardware and implement store on the first lot after the townsite was platted in 1896. ULEN, also located in Clay County, was named in honor of Ole Ulen, its first settler. The city of Ulen was established on part of his homestead and was incorporated as a village on Nov. 12, 1896. The post office was established in 1884. WAUBUN, a city in Mahnomen County, has an Ojibwe name, meaning “the east,” “the morning,” and “the twilight of dawn.” It is spelled waban in Baraga’s Dictionary, and wabun by Longfellow in The Song of Hiawatha, with definition as the east wind. The city was incorporated as a village on Dec. 18, 1907. When the Soo Line built through the county in 1903-4, the general manager, Pennington, and his chief engineer, Thomas

Green, named the stations as they moved the line north; all towns on the reservation had to have Indian names. The post office for this community was established in 1905 as Bement, changing to Waubun in 1906. PERHAM, located in Otter Tail County, is named after Josiah Perham, the first President of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The railroad arrived in Otter Tail County in 1871. A mercantile store was erected on the north side of the tracks the next year and Perham has been prospering ever since. Perham currently boasts of a stateof-the-art community fitness and recreation center; a 27-hole, championship golf course. It is also the center for surrounding agriculture and tourism. VERGAS, located in Otter Tail County, is known as the “Home of the Loon,” the Minnesota State Bird. There is a giant 20 foot replica of the State Bird erected on the shore of Long Lake, in the center of City Park, which is also home to a public beach and picnic area. There are 25 lakes within a five-mile radius of Vergas. The community’s present name comes from one of four in the “V” series used to designate Soo Line sleeping cars that traveled between Minneapolis and Winnipeg. The post office began as Candor in 1904, the railroad station was Vergas, and the townsite was Altona, all names changing to Vergas in 1903. The community has a well-known bar and grill, a café, grocery store and a supper club just outside of town.

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) & School Readiness ECFE is a program for all families with children ages 0-5. Our purpose is to help parents provide the best possible environment for your child’s learning and growth, because you are your child’s first and most important teachers. Our programs have no income or special needs guidelines and all families are encouraged to participate. Preschool (school readiness) classes are available to children who reside in the Detroit Lakes School District who will be 3-5 years of age by September 1, 2014. Children enrolled in the program grow through pre-reading and pre-math activities, art, music, imaginative play and school readiness experiences like.

Administrative Assistant: Becky Johns “Learning for all ages and interests,” with adult offerings including vocational and enrichment classes, parenting and childcare, computers, GED and ABE, and kids’ classes in snowmobile safety, crafting, baking and more. The school also offers an After School Enrichment Program from 3 to 6 p.m. on school days, on a drop-in basis. Participants receive a healthy snack, help with homework, have time for outside play, and do craft and art projects.

Wildlife Refuges Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District: This U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service office manages more than 50,000 acres of wetland and prairie habitat on Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) and easements in Becker, Clay, Mahnomen, Norman and Polk counties. These diverse prairie and wooded areas provide habitat for more than 280 bird species. Walk into the 1,372-acre Helliksen Prairie WPA in northwestern Becker County and experience the sights and sounds of a virgin tallgrass native prairie that is teeming with wetlands, wildlife and wildflowers. Hike the 1.5-mile Prairie Marsh Trail at the Headquarters WPA just north of Detroit Lakes and look for white-tailed deer, numerous migratory birds and other wildlife. Active osprey nests can be seen from the hiking trail. The trail is open during daylight hours for hiking and cross country skiing. Detroit Mountain Recreation Area: Detroit Lakes’ newest year-round recreation destination includes a terrain park, tubing hill with warming house, 4.5 miles of cross country skiing trails, 6-8 miles of snow shoeing trails and 17 downhill skiing runs as well as skiing and snowboarding lessons, a ski lodge with rental shop, bar/restaurant and souvenir shop, and even a volunteer Ski Patrol to watch over visitors and provide aid as necessary. Social Service Programs

Services to Families and Children: Services provided to help persons experiencing difficulty with family living, child rearing and adjustment problems. Services include case management, child protection, child placement, adoption, in-home family support, information and referral. Child Care Assistance: Lakes and Prairies Community Action Partnership, Inc., provides case management for the county’s childcare program. Located at 715 11th St. N., Suite 402, Moorhead MN 56560. Developmental Disability Services: Services provided to developmentally disabled children and adults to promote self sufficiency, independence and community integration with services provided in the least restrictive setting. Mental Health Services: Case management services for adults and children experiencing difficulty with their emotional or mental health needs including a full range of mental health services. This may also include assisting the court to obtain involuntary commitments when necessary. Becker County Human Services coordinates mental health crisis services for adults and children. This includes the coordination of mobile crisis teams and collaboration with qualified crisis providers in the region. Chemical Dependency Services: Provide chemical dependency referrals to in-patient and out-patient facilities, case management and assisting the Court to obtain involuntary commitment when necessary. Services to Seniors: Long term care consultation services are provided which include providing information and education to individuals on services available for assisting with long term care and chronic care needs. Assessments are done to determine health, social and psychological needs and help is provided to identify services that are needed to support and maintain individuals in the last restrictive environment. Information is provided on eligibility for health care programs and recommendations are made on community-based services. Case management is provided to develop a case plan and arrange for services. Day Care and Foster Care Licensing: Recruits and licenses Day Care homes and Adult and Child Foster Care homes in the county. Adult Protection Services: This program provides services to vulnerable individuals including frail, elderly and disabled individuals. These individuals may be experiencing difficulty protecting themselves and obtaining basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Reports of vulnerable adults are received, investigated and services provided as needed. Services are focused on safety and well-being and support independent living. Agency staff collaborates and coordinates with home health, community health, law enforcement and other agencies that serve senior and disabled individuals.

Health Insurance: Minnesota’s new online health insurance marketplace, www.mnsure.org, has a variety of options available. Diversionary Work Program (DWP): The Diversionary Work Program is a four-month program that helps low-income Minnesota families find jobs. The goal of DWP is to help parents immediately start working and

Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP): The Minnesota Family Investment Program is the state’s welfare program for lowincome families with children. The focus of this program is to help families move toward economic stability by entering the workforce while offering resources of a cash grant, food support and child care assistance. Parents are expected to work. Most families can get cash assistance for only 60 months in a lifetime. General Assistance (GA): The General Assistance Program is for single adults and childless couples. The GA program provides monthly cash grants for eligible persons. Minnesota Supplemental Assistance (MSA): Minnesota Supplemental Aid is a state funded program that provides a monthly cash supplement to people who are aged, blind or disabled and who receive Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Food Support Benefits: The Food Support program is a countyadministered, federal program that assists people and families with low incomes to purchase food and better meet their nutritional needs. The program is not intended to supply all of a person or family’s food needs. Instead, it is a supplement to help them achieve or maintain their independence. Emergency Assistance: Helps individuals and families with housing, heat or other basic needs. Child Support Enforcement Services: Insures that child obligations ordered by the court are paid by the parent. The services include basic support, medical support, and child care; location of parents; collection of current and past due obligations; and taking action against parents who fail to meet their court ordered obligations.

Community Health

The Community Health Unit (847-5628) provides services for frail and elderly, disabled individuals and vulnerable adults enabling them to live safely and independently in the community. Community Health Nurses deliver post partum/newborn home visits and ongoing TANF

women, infants, and children to provide ongoing support. This program is available to all families residing in Becker County. Becker County Community Health provides evidenced based ongoing home visiting programs to eligible pregnant women and families. Maternal Child Health Services: All Becker County families with a newborn are contacted by a Community Health Nurse. A home visit is offered to provide new parents with information on feeding choices, newborn cares and additional support and resources available in the community. Parental, Childbirth and Newborn Education: Educational support is offered to all residents of Becker County. Material presented is tailored to meet the specific needs including labor and delivery, breastfeeding, bottle feeding and newborn/postpartum care and childhood developmental stages. WIC (Women, Infants, and Children): WIC is a nutrition education program serving income eligible pregnant and postpartum women, infants to age one, and children to age 5. The program provides nutrition and breastfeeding education, health referrals, and vouchers for supplemental foods. MAC (Mothers and Children): MAC provides commodity food items to income eligible children ages 5 to 6 and non-breastfeeding women 6 to 12 months postpartum. Car Seat Program: Medica and Blue Plus have a car seat program for children under 2. Education and installation of the car seat are offered to any resident of Becker County. Child and Teen Checkups (C&TC): Child and Teen Checkups are offered to any Becker County resident under the age of 21. Checkups include: hearing and vision screening, developmental screening, physical exam, lead screening, immunizations and referrals to other health care providers as necessary. Immunizations: Infant, child and adult immunizations can be done at Becker County Community Health by appointment. Follow Along Program: The Follow Along Program consists of a series of developmental questionnaires the parent completes and returns to Becker County Community Health. The questionnaire is scored and a letter is sent to the parent with the results. This program is free to all children in Becker County under the age of 36 months. Family Planning: This program offers free or reduced confidential education and information on all methods of contraception to any Becker County resident. A physical exam with a mid-level provider and a 1 year supply of contraceptive method of choice will be provided. Pregnancy Testing: Pregnancy testing is available to all Becker County residents for a minimal donation and is offered through our Family Planning Clinic. Health Promotion and Wellness Activity: Numerous health

Detroit Mountain is reborn as year-round recreation destination In November 2014, a lakes area skiing destination with a 60-year history in the community was reborn as a year-round recreational attraction. The brand new, 200-acre Detroit Mountain Recreation Area encompasses everything from snow shoeing, skiing (downhill and cross country), snowboarding and tubing in the winter to mountain biking and hiking in the warmer months. Snowboarders and slope style skiers alike will appreciate the unique design of the Scheels Terrain Park, which includes jumps, rails and kickers. A high-speed tow rope pulls skiers and snowboarders to the top for a fun and exciting ride, both up and down. The new ski area also features snowmaking capabilities, day and night skiing on more than a dozen different runs served by triple chair lifts, and a learning area with tow rope and magic carpet lift, known as Potential Park. Daily and season passes, as well as ski and snowboard rentals and lessons are available.

The five-lane Landslide Tubing Park is also served by a magic carpet lift and features a warming house at the bottom for friends and family to watch the fun in comfort. The Nordic and snowshoe trails at Detroit Mountain take you on a scenic tour through its wooded acreage. Bring your skis and get on the 7 kilometers of groomed cross country ski trails, or forge your own route with your snowshoes. The ski trails also connect to adjacent trails at the county-owned Mountain View Recreation Area and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Waterfowl Production Area. As these trails are not currently served by snowmaking equipment, please contact Detroit Mountain staff to determine whether there is sufficient snow cover for skiing before heading out. The new lodge at Detroit Mountain is constructed from native white pine lumber and rugged stone, with a corner stone fireplace and picture windows facing the ski runs and learning area, providing

spectacular views. The lodge includes a cafeteria and bar, rental shop, souvenir shop and free wireless Internet. â€‹Detroit Mountain will open its mountain biking trail system, including cross country flow, gravity fed, and skills area in the summer of 2015. The trails were designed with all levels of riders in mind, from beginners to professionals. Hook your bike on the lift, ride to the top of the mountain and put a smile on your face while riding the exciting new network of trails! Once the trails are officially opened, the rental shop at the lodge will be open for bike rentals through the summer months as well. Detroit Mountain is less than three miles from the Detroit Lakes city limits. Please contact us if you would like more information. The Community Caregivers-Faith in Action Volunteer Program provides assistance to elderly and disabled in Becker County through a network of volunteers, congregations, and agencies. Volunteers benefit from training and ongoing support, and enjoy an opportunity to develop and express their spirituality through engaging in meaningful service to others. The program is provided through donations to the Emmanuel Foundation, and through United Way. There is no fee for assistance. The Senior Companion Program provides assistance to help frail, elderly and disabled adults in Becker County to stay at home. Companions are over the age of 60, and “do what friends do for friends.” The program is provided in partnership with Becker County, Lutheran Social Services, and the United Way, and through donations to the Emmanuel Foundation. A fee may apply. Community Support Systems provide wellness education, strength based counseling and support groups for those living with Alzheimer’s, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease. Support groups meet regularly at Ecumen-Detroit Lakes and are free of charge. “Helping Hands Ministry” assists the elderly and disabled of the Detroit Lakes area community with minor home repairs and home maintenance in the spirit of Matthew 25:35; “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink: I was a stranger and you took me in. I was naked and you clothed me: I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” The Community Homemaking program (218-844-7154) provides meal preparation, routine household assistance, shopping, and general support to individuals living within ten miles of Detroit Lakes.

Ojibwe Forests Rally brings thrill of racing to streets of Detroit Lakes One of Detroit Lakes’ most popular new summer attractions, the Muscatell Ojibwe Forests Rally, returns to Becker County Aug. 27-29, 2015. The 2014 Muscatell Ojibwe Forests Rally was the penultimate event of the eight round Rally America Championship, and featured three days of competition that took racers along many little-used gravel back roads of Becker and Clearwater counties, to the Buffalo River Race Park and even includes a stage that runs through the streets of Detroit Lakes. Thousands of spectators lined

West Lake Drive on the final night of the rally to watch the racers speed their way past the city beach to complete the race’s final stage. “Everybody loved it,” said race chairman Erick Nelson. “Even the guys who crashed had a great time.” Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew claimed victory in the 2014 race, winning nearly all of the event’s 16 competition stages. “The Ojibwe Forests Rally organizers put on a fantastic event for both fans and competitors,” stated Rob Weir, Subaru Motorsports

marketing manager. “We’re proud to put Subaru at the top of the podium at this Rally America round, and look forward to our return in 2015.” A total of 45 teams were entered in 2014, and more of them completed the race than ever before. Film crews were even on hand to film the event for broadcast on NBC Sports, something that hadn’t happened in several years. Even bigger things are being planned for 2015. Tamarac ‘going green’ for wildlife Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, located about 10 miles northeast of Detroit Lakes, lies in the heart of one of the most diverse transition zones in North America. Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge was established as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife by Executive Order 7902, dated May 31, 1938. Here Eastern deciduous hardwoods, Northern coniferous forests and Western tall grass prairie converge, creating a rich assemblage of both plants and animals. The landscape is characterized by rolling forested hills interspersed with shallow lakes, rivers, marshes and shrub swamps. Towering red and white pine intermingle with aspens, majestic old growth forests, jack pine barrens and tamarack-spruce bogs. In the land where food grows on water, bountiful wild rice provides for future generations of wildlife and native people. Though the landscape has been altered by the influences of human history and past management, the Refuge remains largely intact with a

functioning ecosystem, retaining an untamed character for current visitors to enjoy, use and respect. From the vibrant emergence of spring woodland wildflowers to the rich colors of autumn to the quiet hush of winter, people come to revitalize their spirit and connect with a rich wildlife heritage. Tamarac’s latest addition, the Discovery Center, is slated for a June 2015 opening. This brainchild of the nonprofit Friends of Tamarac NWR is an energy-efficient facility created as a permanent home for the Refuge’s environmental education programs. Within just a little under 2,000 square feet, the Discovery Center will house a multi-purpose meeting room, storage and restrooms — but the part that the Friends are most excited about is the outdoor classroom/amphitheater “that will allow nearly 100 people to gather at a time without creating a large impact on the landscape,” according to the informational brochure. The indoor meeting room will allow for gatherings of 45 people in a classroom setting, or 70-80 people in

an open meeting setting. Once it’s completed, the new building will be used to enhance and expand the environmental education programs already in existence at Tamarac — many of which are organized and taught by volunteers from the Friends organization. Five outdoor learning stations have been set up around the refuge, with each geared toward teaching a different aspect of the refuge’s natural flora and fauna. Friends of Tamarac volunteers contribute their time and expertise to teach these programs to visiting students from as close as Detroit Lakes and Frazee-Vergas, or as far away as Moorhead and Park Rapids. The newly renovated Visitor Center at Tamarac, which officially reopened in the spring of 2014, was retrofitted to incorporate both geothermal heating and solar power. Award-winning WE Fest poised for even bigger things in future Since 1983, WE Fest has been bringing some of the hottest performers in country music to the main stage of the Soo Pass Ranch, located just five minutes south of Detroit Lakes off Highway 59. Twice nominated for the Country Music Association’s prestigious Best Special Event award, WE Fest is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding events of its kind in the nation — and under the new ownership of Townsquare Media, the 33-year-old Becker County tradition is poised for an even brighter future. Townsquare Media is the third largest radio company in America with 311 stations, including 24 in Minnesota markets St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester and Faribault/ Owatonna and five stations in Bismarck, N.D.

“It’s an amazing new chapter for WE Fest,” said John Gourley, the festival’s chief marketing officer. “With a company of this size, it will give us the resources to do even more new things at WE Fest in terms of enhancing the audience experience — and to do them more quickly.” This year, organizers are hoping to once again bring in sold-out crowds to enjoy the music of headliners Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and Rascal Flatts — one for each night of the festival, which runs August 6, 7 and 8, 2015. Veterans Memorial Park: Patriotic gateway to City of Detroit Lakes On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2011, government officials shared the stage with Becker County veterans’ organizations for the official dedication of the new Veterans Memorial Park, located at the corner of Washington Avenue and U.S. Highway 10 in downtown Detroit Lakes. The focal point of the park is the Becker County Veterans Memorial, an 11x12-foot granite monument that was constructed by Detroit Lakes’ own Ness Granite Works. The monument is fronted by five

flagpoles, which on special occasions will fly flags representing each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces as well as the American flag. The 0.8-acre park also includes a curved sidewalk lined with engraved granite pavers and benches, honoring area war veterans and those who have served both past and present. The sidewalk leads from the monument at the park’s west entrance to a raised amphitheater on its east side, which was dedicated in August

2012. Also included in the new park are four previously constructed memorials that used to stand in the old county veterans park next to the county courthouse (the park was dismantled to make way for a courthouse expansion three years ago). Those monuments, installed in the spring of 2012, include a memorial to fallen Becker County war veterans; a firemen’s memorial; a Sept. 11, 2001 memorial; and a flag dedication stone.
