The Damien Home Tour features five homes this year that are worth the drive around the Detroit Lakes area. In fact, take a little extra time to enjoy the changing fall colors while out visiting these homes. Each year the Damien Society members find people willing to open their homes to an average of 400 visitors. The homes this year stretch from Howe Lake to Long Lake, Lake Melissa to Big Floyd Lake and one right in the city of Detroit Lakes. The money raised from the Saturday, Oct. 3, tours goes to local charities including Dollars for Scholars, the Becker County Food Pantry and the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, just to name a few. Tickets are $15 and available from Damien members, DL Newspapers, La Barista, DL Regional Chamber of Commerce, Detroit Paint & Glass and The Wild Goose in Perham. When purchasing tickets, you will also get a map of the house locations. The tours are from 12:30 to 4 p.m., and you can start at any of the houses. Enjoy!

Family retreat When they sold the family farm in North Dakota, Georgie Mechtel and her family were looking for a new gathering spot at the lake. They found it on Long Lake. STORY BY PIPPI MAYFIELD PHOTOS BY BRIAN BASHAM

nyone just walking into Georgie Mechtel’s home can see why she chose to purchase it four years ago. With high ceilings, beautiful wood floors, an open floor plan and large picture windows overlooking Long Lake, it’s as inviting as it is breathtaking. “It’s not the exterior, but it was walking in and the view,” Mechtel said of what drew her to the house. “You walk in and you see the view and you see the floors. “The screened porch was also very attractive.” After Mechtel sold the family farm in North Dakota, she and her family “needed a place for family gatherings.” With her daughters in Woodbury and Fargo, they all wanted a lake home where they could escape on the weekends and have plenty to do. “There’s enough room to bring the girls, husbands and each has two kids. It isn’t the farm, but it’s another gathering place,” she said. While Mechtel also lives in Fargo, she spends all summer at the lake home. She said what also

drew her to the house – besides the initial view once you open the front door – was that it is on city water and sewer and roads. Sitting in the house, or playing in the yard, you’d never know you were within the city limits, though. Instead of traffic and crowds, Mechtel enjoys more country-like living, but with the benefit of the city taking care of the roads and services. Mechtel’s house is the perfect design for her and her family. The main level boasts a spacious master bedroom/bathroom suite, kitchen, dining room, living room, fireplace, bathroom and screened-in sunporch. There is also a room Mechtel uses as an office, which has a sofa that converts into a sleeper if needed. With such an open floor plan, “it works really well for extended families,” Mechtel said of the space. It also works well for her because she doesn’t like stair steps. In her master bedroom, which could be a small house of its own for some people, Mechtel said she jokingly calls it “my treehouse, since I’m up in the trees” by the view out the windows. Off the master bedroom is the master bathroom

Downstairs, there is a gathering spot for all family members, complete with a small kitchen area, and then two bedrooms and a bath to the left for one daughter and her family and two bedrooms and a bath on the right for the other daughter and her family. There is also a theater room with plush chairs and plenty of space to relax and entertain. “The kids have movie night,” she

said. Since moving in in 2011, Mechtel and her family have done some work to the property to make it more suitable for them. “It sounds odd, but we’ve done quite a bit,” she said. One thing was changing out the light fixtures in the kitchen and dining room. Another was putting in an outdoor swimming pool and landscaping the yard. Mechtel said she agreed to be on the Damien Tour of Homes this year

because she was asked last year but was still in the midst of projects. This year though, she agreed. “It’s a good thing,” she said of the fundraiser and what the money goes toward. Happy to share her home with the public to tour, Mechtel is also happy to share her home with family and friends. “It’s a great family gathering place,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of people here and we’re never crowded. We like sharing it.”

Steeped in history I

n 1972, when Carole and Paul Schornack purchased their home on Lake Melissa, it was small but perfect for the young couple and their baby. Years before, Becker County Sheriff Jim Larson had built the 24-by-36-foot cinderblock house with a flat roof. Carole said the house wasn’t great but they sure thought it was wonderful. They purchased the house for

$11,500 with 75 feet of lake frontage. The Schornacks and their neighbors then purchased the lot between them and split it, giving them both the ability to add onto their homes, and giving the Schornacks a total of 112 feet of shoreline. Since then, they have built additions, completely gutted the upstairs, replaced dining room windows with a patio door and made other changes to make it the house it is today. She

said it’s not huge by any means, but it’s filled with history. In the 1970s, the living room housed a TV pit, and the family and friends spent all their time in there. Since then, they have remodeled it to fit the times, and “now we’re just in here at Christmastime,” she said with a laugh. Instead, they now spend all of their time in the sunroom. dows, if it’s sunny and not windy, they can even use the room at Christmas because the sun warms the space up so easily. “We eat most of our meals out here,” she added. Upstairs, which was gutted and redone in 2006, the master bedroom features a small balcony to the lake and a large bathroom and walk-in closet for Carole. Paul has his own closet in the bedroom. The bathroom features not just separate his and her sinks, it features separate his and her areas. It also has a nook in the wall where Carole keeps a coffee pot so she doesn’t have to get FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

up and rush downstairs for her morning cup of java. Upstairs also houses three bedrooms for when their children, grandchildren and Carole’s sister come to visit. There are also two bathrooms for guests. “It’s been a transformation over 43 years,” she said. While their kids grew up on the lake, Carole said they all also felt very removed from town and their friends so she spent a lot of time hauling kids around. And now that the kids are adults and have kids of their own, they still come back and spend time during the summer at the house. The family has celebrated every Christmas at the house since they purchased it even though they winter in Florida and lived in Philadelphia for 10 years. their bunkhouse. While their grandson enjoys bringing friends there, it is also used for cyclists passing through town that need a place to stay the night. Warm Showers is a national organization that puts bicyclists in contact with people who will provide a warm shower. Carole said her great nephew had utilized the program and she and her husband “wanted to pay it forward so we added this bunkhouse.” Inside their metal garage, they added a small living room, bathroom, kitchenette and bedroom with bunk beds for the travelers. Through the program, they have gotten to meet some awesome people biking through town, and each has their picture framed on the wall in the bunkhouse to commemorate their stay.

Extension of history When Andrew and Carmen McDavid added onto their home, they worked hard to keep the look of the original house throughout the addition. STORY BY PIPPI MAYFIELD PHOTOS BY BRIAN BASHAM

hen Andrew and Carmen McDavid bought their Summit Avenue house 10 years ago, they knew they needed to add on some space, but they also knew they wanted to keep the original 1926 style throughout the addition. “We decided to move here after we retired,” Andrew said. “We started this project and it spiraled out of control.”

He said that they don’t like to mix different eras when it comes to houses, so they found old doors from an old house being demolished in Detroit Lakes and from the farmhouse where Carmen grew up to put in their addition. “We like antiques and unique pieces,” Carmen said of the decor. “Drew collects 45s,” she added, nodding to the working jukebox in the living room.

Not just the jukebox, but every collectible piece in the McDavid house works. There’s an old Coca-Cola machine in one corner – though they don’t keep it plugged in because the new nickels are too light to make it work, and it’s a bit of an electricity suck – and a barbershop pole in another corner that works for hours on just a couple turns of the crank. Classic signs and paintings fill the walls and old telephones that still work. Andrew said they keep a landline simply so they

can have their phones ringing. The McDavids said they started collecting antiques when they couldn’t afford new furniture. Now, it’s more like a good investment. Some of the pieces have a story behind them as well. Like the sword and Japanese flag in the McDavid’s entryway. During World War II, Andrew’s father found a soldier that had been killed in battle. He took the sword, flag and wallet from the man’s body and tracked down the soldier’s mother in Tokyo. She said that McDavid was the victor and should keep the sword and flag, but she would keep the wallet and his identification.

The main level of the McDavid house includes the master bedroom/bathroom. What used to be two bedrooms with a Jack and Jill style bathroom, they converted one of the bedrooms into the master bathroom. The former bathroom became a walk-through closet. They then added a second bathroom on the main level for guests. Downstairs houses a miscellaneous/exercise room, a sauna, the spare room for when family comes to visit, bathroom and laundry room. The door to the laundry room is special because it used to be at the farm where Carmen grew up. She said her brother broke the window in it years ago and it was tossed aside. She and her husband asked if they could have it some 30 years later and refurbished it for their downstairs. They had friend and stained glass creator Doug Fliss etch a window for it, depicting it as the laundry room. Fliss also made several stained glass pieces for the upstairs. “We tried to keep everything local,” Carmen said of the work and addition they did on their house 10 years ago when they bought it. “If you live in a town, you should buy in your town.” She said that they always go on the home tours each year, so it’s fitting that their home is on the tour this year. “We always go because it’s fun to see (the other homes),” Andrew agreed. The McDavids became a part of the Damien Tour of Homes after they befriended Judy Quam and her husband, and the couple stopped over at the McDavid’s home before going out to dinner. Carmen said that Quam wanted them on the tour because of the unique pieces that fill their home.

Country spectacular Scott and Patti Lysford wanted a private place with a cabin feel to it. Scott built them just what they were looking for. STORY BY PIPPI MAYFIELD PHOTOS BY BRIAN BASHAM

cott Lysford likes to build. He’s built several cabins on property he and his wife, Patti, own in Canada, and has done work on other homes they’ve owned. So when Holiday Inn bought the house they were living in next to the restaurant/hotel, he started drawing up plans for a new house. He designed and built the house on Howe Lake, east of Detroit Lakes, in 2005-06. “I like the lodge look, the log cabin look, and I like the real open design,” he said. The log walls and open living room, kitchen and dining room have all the elements he wanted in the house, but the main thing the family wanted that he spent extra time designing the house around was a theater room. Stadium seating was a must, and that meant trying to figure out how to get the floor level to match up with the rest of the floors in the house. With a 24-inch drop from front to back of the room, “it’s hard to design around it.” But it worked, and anyone visiting the home wouldn’t even notice the landing with a step down to the sunken game room and a step up to the loft. When designing the house, Patti wanted a spare bedroom for when grandma came to visit instead of

the theater room, so Scott said the family voted on theater room or spare bedroom for grandma. The vote was 3-1, he said with a laugh. His kids had to agree though that when grandma did come to visit, one of them had to give up their room. The family – and many friends and family over the years – have utilized “Howe Lake Cinema” for movie nights, Super Bowl parties and more. He said the design of the house is a simple one really. There are three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, with a lofted area overlooking the living and dining rooms. “I drew it out on paper. I didn’t get architects involved,” he said, adding that the roof was a little more difficult and the truss company had engineers to ensure the plan would work. He said he also hired the plumbing out because he didn’t want to mess that up. The ground floor has polished concrete floors with in-floor heating. The bathrooms have very unique rock sinks, and the master bathroom hosts a very sizable walk-in shower. The master bedroom also houses a whirlpool tub.

A theater room was the biggest obstacle for Scott to overcome when designing the house. It was a must-have, but the drop in the floor for stadium seating took some extra design work. So steps from the game room lead into the theater room off to the left. As for the marquee above the entrance, Scott said he had it pictured in his mind but couldn’t find it anywhere so he crafted it himself.

The living room, which has a wall of windows looking out to the lake, boasts a huge fireplace. Scott said he wanted a cabin look and feel to the house so he got the largest fireplace and filled one wall of the room with hearth and brick. Patti said the best part of the house, to her, is the openness of the kitchen, dining and living rooms because of the number of people that can gather together there. “During hockey season, we had a lot of people here,” she said of when their son was in high school and played on the Detroit Lakes team. She also hosted her high school reunion at the house and had plenty of space to entertain. Outdoors, the family has enjoyed the space as well. With a peaceful area on the lake, they have been able to create their own hockey rink out back, cross country ski around the lake and just sit and relax while enjoying the lake and wildlife. Scott said it was great doing all the work on the house himself because it allowed them to spend more on the materials and get what they wanted. 001311296r1

“I’m pretty particular,” he said. “There are things you can always improve on, but we like it.” He said he has no building plans for more houses or cabins, a promise he made to his wife. He said they love their house and when it’s time to sell, it will be time to downsize as well. Patti said she hasn’t minded his building over the years, though. “It’s a stress release for him. And with the benefit, I can’t complain,” she said of the beautiful house and now three cabins on their Canadian property. “I get my own cabin,” she added with a laugh.

classy, elegant house with plenty of space for the grandsons to play is a hard mixture to come by, but that’s just what Patty and Mike Evans accomplished with their Big Floyd Lake home. Guests walking in the front door see beautiful wood floors, plush carpet, high ceilings and an inviting fireplace. Built two years ago, the Evans’ didn’t want a lot of steps in the house. venient for them, the master bedroom is located on the main level, complete with walk-in closet and master bathroom. A spare bedroom and bathroom are on the main floor as well, along with the laundry room, kitchen, dining and living rooms. Besides wanting only a small number of steps in the house, they also wanted to showcase the lake view. An open floor plan with large win-

dows to the lake highlights the view from any room facing the lake. High ceilings in the living room also give the space an even more open feeling. The kitchen, complete with an island and stools around it, features several unique aspects. For one, there are canned skylights in the ceiling. “It’s amazing the light they give off,” Patty said, adding that there are time she thinks that she forgot to turn the lights off in the kitchen and it was

simply the skylights. The Evans also have an induction stove. Used with special pots and pans, the stove can heat water in one minute, but the surface of the stove never gets hot. Patty said that’s great for a house with small grandsons – six of them ages 6 and under – visiting on a regular basis. Just off the kitchen is also a pantry for odds and ends, from canned goods to Legos. There is also a coffee bar, which after 5 p.m., turns into a cocktail bar. On the front of the house, looking out over the lake, is the sunroom, which also opens out onto the patio. The room is warmed with the sun pouring through the walls of windows and from the fireplace.

“In the summertime and early mornings, we put the fireplace on” and sit in the sunroom, she said, adding that they spend a lot of their time there. From the sunroom to the kitchen, there are glass French doors and when there is a larger crowd to entertain, “we can open that up and have an extension of the room,” she said. Upstairs is the perfect area for their sons and their young families, and each room is named. The “Landing” is great for watching television and relaxing. when they come visit. The “Storage Room” is just off a spare bedroom, and while it may be called the storage room, it’s large enough that it seems like there isn’t much storage in it besides the summer, lake inflatables. The other spare bedroom is dubbed the “Log Room,” for the log bed in it. The biggest and most kid-friendly spot in the house though is the “Play Room.” A large room above the garage is open for the kids to run free. Patty said everything in it is unbreakable, and there’s only one door to get out so no

one sneaks out past the adults. Knotty alder wood is featured throughout the house, showing its rich, pronounced grain. Patty said when the house was completed, it turned out “almost better than we planned on. It’s short steps to the garage or to the beach. It’s very functional.” She said that they agreed to be on the home tour this year because “it goes to charity. We think Detroit Lakes is a great community” and they are happy to help contribute to its wellbeing.
