Owned and operated by Mark Disse, the business began with Disse cleaning cars at his grandfather’s home at the age of 18. He purchased his first two-car garage at age 20 and quickly grew the business.

Maggie Schmit, a local native from Detroit Lakes, opened Magnolia’s Family Hair Design in May of 1996 in downtown Detroit Lakes. After two years, she located to the former Thomas grocery on the north side of Washington Avenue where Magnolia’s remained for over 20 years until her current relocation to 601 Washington Ave.
Starting as a two-person salon, Magnolia’s has grown with 10 independent contractors offering a variety of services including hair, massage therapy and eyelash extensions. Maggie’s oldest daughter, Josie Schermerhorn, graduated from the Salon Professional Academy in July 2016.

Schiller’s House opened in January 2021 in Detroit Lakes, catering to men who want to look their best, and has been growing ever since. Last year, a second Schiller’s House opened in Perham.

A unique 18-hole course that was opened in 1980, the Lakeview Course plays to par of 31-33-64, with nine par three holes, eight par four holes, and a closing par five.
The picturesque course features large greens, with traps bordering all 18 holes. Golfers are offered some spectacular views, especially from the tee area (situated at the highest point on the two courses) at the seventh hole. While the yardage may appear to be short, the course is deceptively difficult. The course record is 57, set in 1999.

Boasting a wide variety of international, national, regional and local music, theatre and dance performances, the Historic Holmes Theatre promises some great options for fans of live entertainment.
Located in a historic school building that has been converted, this performing arts and events center is now home to an art deco theater, large ballroom, art gallery, creative space and what may be the world’s largest penny floor.
Ticketholders describe the Holmes as a “great place to gather with friends for a fun night out.” Each year, the theater hosts more than 50 shows and other events, from renowned musicians like Arlo Guthrie to kids’ productions like “Annie Jr.”
The Holmes is owned by the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center, Inc., and has a staff of five. It has been in operation for the past 20 years.

A longstanding and beloved summer tradition in Detroit Lakes, the Northwest Water Carnival celebrated its 87th season in 2023.
Typically a 10-day event, the Water Carnival is a celebration of the Lakes Area’s finest feature — water. The many games, competitions and other events that are always a part of the Water Carnival all feature water in some way, with most taking place on the water, in the water, or right next to it, on the City Beach.
Those who partake in a Water Carnival event can expect to get wet, at least a little. Even the pinnacle Parade of the Northwest has water as a central feature, with squirt guns and water balloons frequently aimed at both participants and paradegoers.
The Water Carnival is organized by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees, a nonprofit group of young individuals working to benefit the community.
The Jaycees have heard great things from the public about the Water Carnival, with some people planning their summer vacations around it because it’s become such a tradition for them.
At first, Eggebraaten played occasional night and weekend gigs as a hobby. But later, he was booked up for shows all over the region and became one of Detroit Lakes’ most well-known and beloved performers.
Today, Eggebraaten is focusing on professional motivational and inspirational speaking, combining his music with stories and life lessons to help others find their “Rhythm of Life.” He says his love of entertaining will keep him on community stages as the “Off Duty Chief” for as long as he can do it.
Audiences say Eggebraaten’s shows are “unique, personal, authentic, fun, energetic, funny,” and more. The variety of music he plays appeals to many different age groups and musical tastes. He often ad-libs and injects lyrics about people or situations happening in real-time. The result is a fun atmosphere and an enjoyable show.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me,” says Eggebraaten. “To be nominated with the caliber of talent in the category was an honor. The other entertainers are my role models, and all play an integral part in the live music scene in Detroit Lakes! We are fortunate to have so many incredible venues and talent in our community.”
Jessica Burhans is an avid community volunteer, proud lifetime Laker, and works as a business development officer at Midwest Bank.
Born and raised in Detroit Lakes, Burhans graduated from Detroit Lakes High School and went on to earn a degree in business administration and economics from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn.
Burhans credits her mom, Von Stoen, for being a great role model, instilling in her the value of giving back and helping others.
Burhans serves as a volunteer for the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and Noon Rotary, and is Chair of several Rotary club events. She’s a past Rotary board member, past United Way President, past Relay for Life co-chair, and current volunteer for First Lutheran Church, Salvation Army Red Kettle, the local food pantry and DLHS Academy.
Burhans is known for her highly energetic, positive personality and loves to meet new people and connect them with ways to become involved in the community.
She has also been instrumental in involving her co-workers in opportunities to better the community. She says her boss, Steve Daggett, embraces community and allows his Midwest Bank employees to have an active role in meeting community needs.
“At Midwest Bank we have an expectation that our employees give back to the communities we operate in,” says Daggett. “No one in our organization does that better than Jessica. We are very proud of how she represents our bank.”
“It is because of the support of my employer that volunteering is possible,” says Burhans. “We live in a community that supports one another, with people stepping up every day to continue to make Detroit Lakes the amazing place that it is.”
Whether it’s sending a card, bringing a meal to someone going through a difficult time or delivering baked goodies to bring a smile, Burhans believes little things can make such a difference.
“I am humbled to be voted as Best Volunteer, as I can think of so many other deserving people in our community. I’m blessed for the opportunity to learn and volunteer alongside some of the finest individuals,” Burhans says.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Anna Sellin, the staff of 27 assists individuals and families who are affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and general crime situations. Crime victims’ services are free and confidential.
The resource center provides counseling and support to help victims identify and assert their rights, navigate the criminal justice system and locate and obtain any other services they may need to ease the impact of their victimization.
The center offers a 24-hour crisis hotline, makes personal advocacy and counseling referrals and offers support groups for children dealing with abuse, divorce, foster care, anger management and other high-risk situations. It also provides assistance with harassment restraining orders and orders for protection.
The team at Lakes Crisis is tight-knit and works together to ensure they’re meeting clients wherever they are in that moment, emotionally and physically.

L&M Fleet Supply carries everything from the lawn to the lake and everywhere else, all under one roof.
Founded 63 years ago, in 1959, L&M first opened in Grand Rapids, Minn., in a wooden 30-by-60-foot building that barely had room for all the signage on the front. The founders’ vision and mission was to be one of the first merchants to buy direct from factories and sell directly to the consumer, with a small markup philosophy that continues today. Out of that vision, the company philosophy was established: “Quality at a Discount.”
Today, under the ownership of Del Matteson, Shawn Matteson and Erik Andersen, the goal and philosophy of the company remain unchanged — to provide quality products at discount prices, with excellent customer service. Adhering to this philosophy will continue to drive the growth of L&M into the future.
L&M now includes one corporate office/distribution center and 10 retail store locations across Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, employing more than 800 people companywide.
The owners, along with everyone at L&M, thank all their customers for their ongoing support and loyalty through the years.

In business for over 50 years, Lakes Sport Shop is a full-line sporting goods store in downtown Detroit Lakes, offering a wide variety of athletic apparel and gear for sports of every season.
Owners Bruce and Doug Paskey say customers often comment on the shop’s “very helpful and knowledgeable” staff, as well as its wide selection of items.
Lakes Sport Shop employs a staff of 10.

Lakes Processing is a small, family-owned business known for its knowledgeable workers who always provide service with a smile.
In business for 27 years, Lakes Processing employs a staff of several people year-round. In the busy season, there can be as many as 15 people helping out. Most of the employees are relatives or close family friends of the Bachmanns.
“We pride ourselves in putting out the very best quality meats in the lakes area,” say the owners. “We prepare each item as if it was for our best friend. We process beef, pork, lamb, chicken and wild game, along with a full retail store that is sure to have exactly what you are looking for.”
“We do not skip steps or fudge on quality,” they add. “Our quality reputation means the world to us, and we would like to think that reflects into our products and service.”

A nonprofit store that benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, the Boys & Girls Club Thrift Store sells a mix of new products, truckload sales, and, of course, thrift items.
The store has been in operation for 13 years, and celebrated a move into a bigger, more functional space in 2020, the former Kmart building.
“We have the unique opportunity of offering high quality used goods to our customers while helping children in the area,” says a statement from the store. “It is a win-win!”
Customers of the store often comment on how large it is, and how big of a selection it offers.
The store employs about 35 people.
“We really appreciate how supportive the community is, both from a donation standpoint and how loyal our shoppers are,” the statement continues. “The benefit to all of the kids who attend the Boys & Girls Club is unmeasurable and so valuable to the community. Thank you!”
