Itâs that time of year again! Thatâs right, the Detroit Lakes 78th Northwest Water Carnival takes place July 12-21 this year, and admirals Matt and Amy Boeke couldnât be more excited. As this yearâs admirals, the Boekes are involved with the planning of anything and everything that has to do with the water carnival. Amy, a Detroit Lakes native, is no newcomer when it comes to the Water Carnival. While she has lived here her entire life, her husband Matt, who is originally from Owatonna, has been here for nearly a decade, as he moved here in 2003. The two settled in Detroit Lakes. Amy became a kindergarten teacher at Rossman Elementary, and Matt became assistant vice president at First Security Bank. The Boekes have two children. Their oldest, Mya, is 5, and their youngest, Jay, is 20 months. Matt said that the two got involved with the DL Jaycees, âto be part of the community, give back to the community and to meet people.â Although Matt admits the planning process of this yearâs Water Carnival can be a bit much, he said, âItâs been time consuming, but a good commitment to venture into.â When asked what they look

In fact, Mattâs initial response was âall of it.â âThe culmination would just be Bash on the Beach with John Michael Montgomery playing, thatâs always fun just to see 3,000 plus people from the community down having a good time and listening to great music on the beach,â he added. âI think the kids events are always fun, especially having kids that are at an age where they are remembering from year to year what the Water Carnival is all about. It is kind of fun to think of the water carnival as kids events,â Amy said. Amy also spoke positively about the parade, adding that it is âa great way to wrap (the Water Carnival) up.â Although the admirals did have a lot of work to do this year, they feel the other Jaycees helped immensely. âItâs been very helpful to have
the number of Jaycees that we do and the strong group that we do to help us out. Itâs really been a team effort, and we had a lot of really great people who have stepped up to help out,â Amy said. âWith 80 plus members, itâs been great this year to share the workload, and everybodyâs stepped up and done a great job,â Matt added. The Boekes have high hopes for this yearâs carnival. âWe just hope the community comes out and supports not only the Water Carnival, but come down and has a great time. The community is the reason we put it on so we hope they sure enjoy it and come down to participate,â Matt said.
