Defending champ to skip Pine to Palm for pro pursuits STORY BY ROBERT WILLIAMS • RWILLIAMS@DLNEWSPAPERS.COM

T

he 84th Pine to Palm will have a new champion in 2016 as last year’s winner Alex Kline has elected to turn professional having recently graduated from college in Phoenix and moved back to Minnesota for the summer.

“My goal is to have status on a PGA sanctioned tour, PGA Canada, Web.com, PGA Latin America, earn a card,” said Kline. “It’s tough, because there are so many good guys out there, but you can’t get through if you don’t play.”

Kline played in his first professional event May 9, the US Open qualifying tournament at the Minneapolis Golf Club, where he was the medalist with a three-under par round of 69, and one of five players advancing to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open.

Kline posted a top 20 finish at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash., at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier and was in contention on the back nine of the final round.

“It was fun; that was kind of the highlight of the year, so far,” said Kline. “It’s always fun to be on a stage like that.”

It was Kline’s second section appearance at the Open qualifier, having reached the same level in 2014.

After winning the Pine to Palm last August, Kline seized momentum from the championship and used the confidence gained in Detroit Lakes to excel in his senior season at Grand Canyon University.

“I got off to a really good start,” he said. “In contention the first event, let it slip away the last 18 holes. I rode momentum from winning the Pine to Palm and kept everything going.

It was a fun last season of college golf.”

Kline earned second team All-Western Athletic Conference honors after placing in the top 10 in two tournaments this season.

In his best finish of the season, Kline finished tied for fifth in the Herb Wimberly Invite on Oct. 19-20 after shooting a two-over

in three rounds. In the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Invite on April 11-12, Kline tied for eighth after shooting one-over through 54 holes. During the WAC Championship on April 30-May 2, Kline climbed the leaderboard from 18th place to 12th in the final round recording a one-under 72.

He was named the WAC golfer of the week for the second time in two years at GCU. In 11 tournaments, Kline and fellow senior Jake Byrum led GCU to five top-six place finishes this season, including two second place finishes at the Herb Wimberly Invite and OGIO UC Santa Barbara Invitational. The pair also helped the Antelopes to place unofficially in third at the WAC Championship. Due to the school’s transition to Division I status, Grand Canyon was unable to score as team.

Kline looks back to the 1-up victory over the University of Minnesota’s Charlie Duensing at last year’s Pine to Palm as one of the reasons he had so much success after the tournament.

“When I first won it, it didn’t really sink in,” Kline said. “When I got down to school, that’s kind of a bigger deal than I realized. It was a big help for me getting better under pressure and in pressure situations. I’ve got something to fall back on and it’s a nice confidence booster, something I can always look back at if I’m struggling or under the gun a little bit; I can think back to what I was doing there and it’s always nice to have that on the backburner.”

Kline may make a non-competitive appearance at this year’s Pine to Palm, either on the bag for a friend or just enjoying the tournament without the added pressure of defending the title.

“It’s tough,” he said of not

playing in DL. “It’s my favorite tournament ever. All my buddies play and go up and have a great time. The course is fun; the atmosphere is fun. I wish I could be there, but I’ve got bigger things going on. It’s just something you have to sacrifice.”

Kline joins Ben Welle, the 2014 Pine to Palm champion, who also chose to turn pro this year with a scheduled debut at the Minnesota State Open Championship July 22-24 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids, Minn.

Qualifying school is next on the agenda for Kline’s professional pursuit either in the fall of 2016 or spring of 2017 with a one-year goal of gaining sanctions to a PGA tour.

“If I can get status and earn a card on any of those tours, I’ll be doing pretty well,” he said.

Kline is chasing the dream of many successful, young golfers, in turning a passion into a career.

“It’s not a bummer to go out and practice,” he said.

Tour stops on the Dakotas Tour and North Star Professional Golf Tour this summer are on tap to prepare for Q-school, along with raising money for entry fees and travel expenses that come with playing in professional golf events and the quest to qualify for a tour.

A

lexander Kline of Ramsey, Minn. was dialed in last summer throwing darts at the pins of the Detroit Country Club defeating University of Minnesota sophomore Charlie Duensing 1-up in the championship match of the Pine to Palm golf tournament.

Just being in the title match was a new experience for Kline, who had failed to get out of the first round his three prior tournament appearances.

“I had a curse on the first round,” he said. “I couldn’t figure out why.”

There was no curse on his strokes during championship Sunday as the Grand Canyon University product pelted the greens with precision on his approach shots.

“I hit it well all day, just couldn’t get a putt to fall with speed,” Kline said. “The speed of the greens was a little slower than the morning. I think that threw me off a bit. I just tried to

stick to my game plan and get it on the green and go from there.”

Kline hit 17 greens in regulation. His only miss was on the tricky par three 3rd hole.

Duensing had the opposite feel going with the tee box in his round and had approach shots create difficulty for the Gopher golfer, but his putter was on fire.

“Most of the day Alex was 20-feet inside me,” Duensing said. “When that happens, I just feel like you have to make it. I rolled some good putts.”

Kline took the lead early going 1-up on No. 1 with par and 2-up on hole No. 5 with a birdie.

He held the two hole advantage to the turn. That’s when Duensing struck.

“I knew Charlie was going to make a run; he’s too good a player,” said Kline.

On the par four 10th, both drives found the right rough.

Kline’s approach landed ninefeet from the pin, Duensing’s 20-feet.

Duensing sunk a downhill putt to put the pressure on Kline and cut his lead in half when Kline’s putt failed.

Duensing evened the match with a birdie at 11 and grabbed momentum.

With Kline’s approach sitting on the fringe at No. 12, Duensing was right in the woods with a view of the green, but little chance to halve the hole.

“I didn’t hit the ball well all day, my putter just kind of saved me,” Duensing said. “I was seeing the lines and my speed felt good all week.”

Duensing’s shot ran up the fairway to the green to come to rest three feet left of Kline’s ball creating a putting showdown ending in matching birdies.

Duensing’s putt elicited a wave of appreciation from the gallery.

“That’s the fun of match play; you never know what’s going to happen,” Kline said.

with an excellent tee shot setting up a makeable birdie. Kline answered with a similar putt attempt from the opposite side of the pin.

Duensing was out and ran a slow roller that hooked the right side of the cup and fell for the lead after Kline’s putt missed.

The lead quickly disappeared when Duensing’s drive on 15 went out of bounds. He managed to bogey, but Kline’s par evened the match with three holes to play.

Kline caught fire during his 1-up morning semifinal victory over two-time runner-up Tony Vincelli and Kline continued to drop shots in scoring position as the championship came to the 16th where Duensing’s birdie attempt was left short and Kline snuck his in the right side of the cup.

“I found some tempo on 15 this morning and kept that thought in my head and absolutely striped it,” said Kline.

Kline had a 12-footer to win on the par three 17th but his attempt slid by right.

Needing to halve to win on 18, Kline’s approach created a tricky downhill putt, while Duensing was near the fringe also facing downhill.

Kline was out and made a tap-in two-putt forcing Duensing to sink the 18-footer to force extra holes.

“Can’t complain, it’s one of my favorite weeks of the year,” said Duensing. “I’m happy with how I played, obviously, bummed that I didn’t get it done but nothing to hang my head about.”

The Detroit Country Club grounds crew was busy in the early hours of Sunday cleaning up half a dozen downed trees from the course caused by overnight storms. After playing in hot conditions most of the week, Sunday’s final had short bouts of light rain and temperatures nearly 30 degrees cooler than Saturday.

23. Saturday, Aug. 12, 1989—Ken Riesberg, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, on the 151-yard 14th hole, using a 6-iron. Witnesses were Dan Conley, Todd Hendricksen and Jeff Reinholdz.

1. Friday, July 26, 1935—Tom Hellander, Fargo, on the 215-yard 7th hole (club used not reported). He was playing Don Orman in a first flight consolation match and the ace was said to be “the first in several years” at the Detroit Country Club.

12. Friday, Aug. 12, 1977—Jay Paul Hornbacher, Walnut Creek, Calif., on the 174-yard 8th hole, using a 3-iron. He defeated Ken Crowell in the match, with other witnesses to the ace being Mark Farnam and Baldy Waldahl.

2. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1946—Georgia Tainter Goff, Fargo, on the 161-yard 12th hole, using a 4-wood. The ace was made during qualifying and came in the final year the Pine to Palm Tournament had a women’s division.

13. Monday, Aug. 7, 1978—John Wangberg, Moorhead, on the 151-yard 14th hole, using a 7-iron. The ace came during qualifying and was witnessed by Steve Bologna, Ted Hatlen and Thomas Ford.

Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1991—Steven Franke, LaCrosse, Wis., on the 160-yard 17th hole, using a 6-iron. Witnesses to the ace, which was made in qualifying play, were John Boerboon, Jeff Cooley and Tim King.

14. Saturday, Aug. 11, 1979—Harold Haupt, Hopkins, on the 160-yard 17th hole, using a 4-iron. Haupt defeated Harold Swanson of St. Paul in a Lida Flight match when he got the ace.

Witnesses were Gregg Sorensen, Rick Kallhoff and Bill LeDoux.

15. Friday, Aug. 13, 1982—Bill Akins, Roseville, on the 223-yard 3rd hole, using a 5-wood. Witnesses to the ace were Larry Wentz, Charles Stone and Bill Fercho.

26. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996—Jason Cordes, Perth, Australia, on the 213-yard 3rd hole, using a 4-iron. Witnesses included Scott Linnerooth, Dave Conzemius Jr., Michael Bindas, Jennifer Volkerding and Matt Geeslin.

3. Friday, Aug. 15, 1952—Bud Nolan, Minneapolis, on the 165-yard 16th hole, using a 5-iron. Nolan was playing in the Sallie Flight and won his match over Dick James, also of Minneapolis, in 20 holes. A member of the Meadowbrook Golf Course, it was the second hole-in-one of his career.

4. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1958—Andy Lindvig, Fargo, on the 179-yard 8th hole, using a 4-iron. Witnesses to the shot were Bob McCart, Hank Langager and Bill Fillmore.

5. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 1962—Jack McCuistion, Lincoln, Nebr., on the 179-yard 8th hole, using a 6-iron.

The hole-in-one came during a qualifying round.

6. Thursday, Aug. 9, 1962—George Cram, Bismarck, N.D., on the 179-yard 8th hole, using a 4-iron. Cram, the North Dakota State Amateur Golf Tournament champion in 1961 and 1962, went on to defeat Carl Liebovich of Rockford, Ill., during the match when he had the ace.

7. Friday, Aug. 10, 1962—Frank Winsor, St. Paul, on the 179-yard 8th hole, using a 3-wood. Winsor went on to defeat Gordon Christopherson of Richfield in the match when he had the hole-in-one.

Thursday, Aug. 14, 1969—David Tweeton, Moorhead, on the 223-yard 3rd hole, using a 3-iron.

Tweeton, playing a Palm Flight match against Dick Thomas of St. Louis Park, eventually lost the match.

9. Friday, Aug. 14, 1970—Richard P. Anderson, Bremerton, Wash., on the 151-yard 14th hole, using a 7-iron. A lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Anderson went on to defeat Bruce Aamoth in the match when he had the ace.

10. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 1973—Stuart Trenda, Owatonna, on the 151-yard 14th hole, using a 7-iron.

Witnesses to the shot were Chuck Hyslop, John Rasmussen and Steve Gillam.

11. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 1973—Tom Huber, Minneapolis, on the 174-yard 8th hole, using a 5-iron. Witnesses to the hole-in-one were Bill Von Wald (who won the first of his three straight championships that year), Lyle Hornbacher and Jim Bergeson.

16. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 1983—Jim Dolan Jr., South St. Paul, on the 151-yard 14th hole, using an 8-iron. Dolan shot a two-under-par 33 on the back nine as he qualified for championship flight play.

Witnesses were Dave Olson, Dave Adams and Tom Coates.

17. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 1984—Curt Bradford, Hutchinson, on the 151-yard 14th hole, using a 5-iron. The ace enabled Bradford to qualify for the championship flight, since he had a 36-hole score of 152 in qualifying and there was a playoff at 153 for title flight contestants. Witnesses to the hole-inone were Greg Mattson, George Oftelie and Rob Polipnick.

18. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1986—Trent Wilcox, Park Rapids, on the 223-yard 3rd hole, using a 2-iron.

Witnesses were Gary Martinson, David Knutson and Steve Herron, along with ball spotter Tim Larson.

19. Friday, Aug. 15, 1986—Bruce Heysse, Wahpeton, N.D., on the 151-yard 14th hole, using an 8-iron.

Witnesses included Don Neitzke, Steve Murdock and Joe Greenagel, along with ball spotter Tim Larson, who witnessed the Wilcox ace three days earlier.

20. Saturday, Aug. 13, 1988—Rudy Edwardson, Detroit Lakes, on the 174-yard 8th hole, using a 5-wood. The ace came in a match when Edwardson defeated Al Leighton of St. Cloud, a former owner of KDLM Radio in Detroit Lakes.

21. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 1989—Jeff Wilber, Miller, S.D., on the 223-yard 3rd hole, using a 2-iron. Witnesses to the ace included Joe Bofferding, John Sauer and Mark O’Brien.

22. Saturday, August 12, 1989—Rick Render, Bloomington, on the 151-yard 14th hole, using a 6-iron. Witnesses were Doug Elliott, Ron Gorg and Sean Gorg.

F

argo native Grady Meyer completed his junior season as a captain for the University of Minnesota men’s golf team and will return to Detroit Lakes in August bidding for a third consecutive medalist honor in a wide open field with the past two champions not attending after turning professional.

“Three in a row would be cool,” said Meyer. “But it’s the Pine to Palm - the overall goal is match play.”

Meyer shot 66 in his 2015 Pine to Palm opening round in near perfect golfing conditions and followed it up with a 69 on a hot Wednesday (135) to defeat Benjamin Skogen and Alex Kline by two strokes.

Kline went on to take the championship in match play over Meyer’s college teammate Charlie Duensing.

Frazee’s Beau Hanson (2012 champion) ended Meyer’s run in match play 3&1 in the round

of 16. Hanson’s victory foiled a potential all-Gopher matchup in the final eight with Duensing.

In 2014, Meyer earned medalist honors for the first time shooting an eight-under 134 to defeat golfing buddy Greg Melhus (2003 champion) and 2014 champion Ben Welle by three strokes.

Meyer completed a successful junior season at Minnesota this spring, playing in eight tournaments. He got off to a fast start in the fall playing all four tournaments for the Gophers with a 73.36 scoring average. He tied a career-low round score of 70 twice at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, posting a career-low tournament score of 215 (+2).

In the spring season, Meyer had a 74.58 stroke average in four tournaments. He picked up a team-leading third top-20 finish at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic, and tied for ninth at the Puerto Rico Individual.

“I made some big jumps this

past year,” he said. “It was getting more comfortable with college golf. You have to get adjusted to school and golf.”

Mentoring younger players on the team as a captain has added to his Gopher duties.

“I’m there for any of the young guy’s needs,” he said. “I’m always there for them, to point them in the right direction and be a good role model on and off the course and set a great example. It’s just little things like being on time; making sure guys are doing their school work and things like that.”

This summer, Meyer made the first of two stops at two of the oldest amateur tournaments in the country finishing tied for 66th (304) in a strong collegiate field at the Monroe Invitational championship in Pittsford, N.Y. “It’s a fantastic tournament,” said Meyer. “I didn’t play great, but met some really good kids.

those tourneys, the atmosphere is awesome. It puts you in position to have to play well.”

University of Southern California All-American Sean Crocker, No. 16 in the World Amateur Golf rankings, paced the field at -3 (277) after 72 holes of stroke play. The Monroe Invite dates back to 1937, five years junior to the Pine to Palm.

Meyer has packed in plenty of tournaments over the summer playing the Sacramento Memorial Amateur in California, the Minnesota Players, and Minnesota State Open qualifiers with the Minnesota State Amateur, Resorters, and Pine to Palm still on the schedule.

Meyer’s shot at three consecutive medalist wins puts him in elite company at Detroit Country Club. Six golfers have been medalist in back-to-back years and only Mike Podolak has won three in a row.

Podolak leads the way as a seventime medalist winning three in a row twice from 1986-1988 and 1991-1993,

and a one-round three-way tie with John Carlson and Tim Rubis in 1999.

Podolak has two championships (1982, 1993) and was runner-up three times (1989, 90, 98).

Other back-to-back medalists: fourtime medalist Pat Herzog 1983-84 and in 1986 and 1990; Paul Cook 1931-32; Jack Webb 1953-54; Frank James 196061; George Cram, Jr. 1961-62.

Gopher golfers have been or shared Pine to Palm medalist honors five of the last six years: Wade Walters 2010; Erik Van Rooyen 2011; Jon Trasamar 2013 and Meyer in 2014-15. Doug Jeans II (Madison College, Wis.) was the last non-Gopher medalist in 2012.

The Pine to Palm continues to be a team bonding tournament for the University of Minnesota golf team.

“Ever since I was a freshman, we kind of all get together as a big group of guys,” said Meyer. “It’s really fun. Eight to 10 guys stay together; it’s nice with the season approaching and helps with new, incoming players. There are so

many good spots to hang out in Detroit Lakes.”

Gopher golf will embark on the 2016-17 season come September with a lot of leadership in Meyer and four other seniors Justin Doeden, William Leaf, Jose Mendez, Matt Rachey and junior Duensing.

“Teamwise, we want to get back to regionals - and nationals is our overall team goal,” said Meyer. “We have a really strong team, deep, with five seniors, and we’re really close friends.

We want to get back to the postseason and we have a lot of potential.”

Meyer is personally on a quest to pick up his first individual, collegiate, tournament victory.

“You’ve got to keep the scoreboard out of your mind and just play shot to shot,” he said.

For two straight years, Meyer has done that at Pine to Palm during stroke play and has a solid chance to make a historical mark at this year’s tournament both in qualifying and match play.

B

oth Pine to Palm Mid-Am finalists had rewarding finishes to play for in defending champion Kent Spriggs going for two in a row, while Scott Uithoven looked to add the championship trophy to his medalist trophy from qualifying earlier in the week.

Spriggs defended his title with a 2-up victory and led the majority of the match.

“You never know coming in when you don’t get to play the qualifying rounds, so you’re a little bit rusty sometimes,” said Spriggs. “But I got it done.”

Uithoven, who won the medalist trophy by four strokes shooting 69-71-140, battled to even Sunday’s match, but Spriggs kept him at a distance with the score teetering between 1-up Spriggs and 2-up most of the afternoon.

“I had to hold on, he made some birdies and some great

shots,” said Spriggs.

Uithoven scored when he needed to on 17 with a great up and down to head to the 18th green 1-down. Spriggs struggled on the potentially matchclinching hole with a two-putt from the fringe.

“I just missed it,” Spriggs said.

Both players got through the trees on the left side of the 18th fairway with limited views of the green and a hidden pin.

Spriggs approach shot got to within a couple feet; Uithoven was eight feet out.

Uithoven missed and conceded the match.

Spriggs had five birdies in his round.

“We each had two bad holes, luckily, they were the same holes,” Spriggs said.

Spriggs was the benefactor of one of those bad holes winning with a double bogey. Both players also bogeyed six.

“Just a couple hiccups there, other than that, we both played pretty well,” he said.

The putter was the biggest nemesis to Spriggs’ game throughout the week of play.

That changed come crunch time in the title match.

“I made a couple putts today, finally,” said Spriggs.

Spriggs found early success on the greens sinking a 15-footer on No. 1 for birdie.

“It got me settled down a bit and I felt better on the greens.

Other than that miss on 17, I made every putt I should have.”

Spriggs plans to return to Detroit Lakes to go for three consecutive Pine to Palm MidAm titles next season.

T

he Seniors division of the Pine to Palm was poised for a new winner on championship Sunday.

Keith Aasen, a veteran of the tournament, took on Marc Redman, making his second appearance.

“It was a good match,” Aasen said. “We didn’t birdie each other to death, that’s for sure.”

The match was even for eight of 17 holes with Redman coming on at the turn, but Aasen rallied late to win the match 3&1.

“Just happy to come out on top,” he said.

Overnight storms the night before the finals created uncertainty on the greens when players arrived Sunday morning.

“I thought they were the same,” Aasen said. “I thought they were going to be a little quicker today.”

Aasen had one berth into the

sweet 16 historically during his play at Pine to Palm, but this was the first season he made a push for the finals.

“I played off and on here since the 70’s, so I’ve always wanted to do well,” he said.

The match began with three holes halved before Aasen took a 1-up lead on four, only to give it back on the par five, 507-yard No. 5 hole.

Aasen pushed back into the lead on No. 6, but as both players took aim from the No. 9 tee box, the match was again square, leading to Redman’s first lead of the match 1-up at the turn.

Aasen answered on No. 11 to square the match and the pair dueled at even to No. 14 where Aasen took the lead for good.

The key hole to determine the match came one hole later.

Both golfers found tree

trouble off the tee on the par four 357-yard hole No. 15.

Redman’s approach found the bunker leading to a bogey, while Aasen sank an easy twoputt par to go 2-up.

Aasen had a chance to clinch on the par four 288-yard 16th hole, but left a birdie putt an inch short rolling toward the middle of the cup.

Redman contended all week with distance off the tee as one of the longest hitters in the Seniors division.

“He out-drove all of us by about 70 yards,” Aasen said.

There was simple secret to Aasen finding success at the 2015 tournament.

“I’m just playing better tee to green, struggled around the greens a little bit, but everyone was around here,” he said. “It’s an equalizer.”

“Some people get lucky; I’m one of them,” — Chuck Renner

Renner captures fifth straight Super Seniors title STORY BY ROBERT WILLIAMS • RWILLIAMS@DLNEWSPAPERS.COM

S

ince 2010, there have been two staples at the Pine to Palm golf tournament and those are Paul Krueger and Chuck Renner in the Super Seniors division.

Renner and Krueger are the only golfers to win the championship in their division since the beginning of Super Seniors play at the Pine with Krueger winning the inaugural title in 2010 over Renner, followed by a Renner streak that he extended to 20 matches capturing his fifth consecutive championship Sunday.

“Some people get lucky; I’m one of them,” Renner said after accepting his trophy.

Throughout his run, Renner has made comebacks and found ways to win and he did that again Sunday afternoon.

After Renner started with a two-up lead by hole No. 3, Krueger found his groove and evened the match before taking a 1-up lead heading to the turn.

“Neither one of us played really well,” Renner said. “We screwed up a lot. Maybe I just did less.”

Krueger extended his advantage to 2-up on No. 10, before Renner responded to square the match.

Krueger took one hole leads on No. 12 and No. 14 with solid play leading to tap-in birdies.

The match evened again and both players had an opportunity to win deadlocked at the 18th tee.

“When we get to this age, we all make a lot of mistakes,” said Renner. “If you can just make one less, that’s the difference here.”

Renner’s drive was middle of the fairway, while Krueger’s stopped with a sudden smack of tree and produced a lie in a copse of trees forcing him to punch out with no view of the green.

Renner’s approach found the back edge of the green lying two; Krueger was 25-feet left of the pin lying three with that lengthy putt to stay alive as Renner was able to cautiously two-putt for the victory.

“Getting down in two like that from above the hole, if he wouldn’t have missed his drive, we’d be going to the first tee,” Renner said.

Renner, never at a loss for words, had difficulty trying to

quantify how he has built a 20-match winning streak and won five straight championships.

“I don’t know what to say. I work real hard all summer and winter and I only play, basically, one tournament.

“I don’t know how I’ve been able to grind it out because I’ve had so many matches like this one where I was two-up on the front, got two-down on the back. It looked pretty pathetic, some of the chunky wedges I hit, but I don’t have an explanation for that,” Renner said of winning his fifth.

Renner has not assured his return for a sixth title in 2016.

“It depends on how my hands do,” he said.

Renner likes to hit a lot of balls during the sunny golf seasons in Arizona and how he combats osteoarthritis in his hands will determine if he returns to defend.

“It takes me so long to prepare; I’ll see how the hands are.

I’ll keep working and see what happens. I’ve got to find a way to play better without hitting so many balls. You can’t keep wearing out a 71-year old body.”

2014 Pine to Palm champ preps for professional golf STORY BY JEFF KOLPACK • FORUM NEWS SERVICE

T

he senior year at the University of Kansas couldn’t have gone any better for 2014 Pine to Palm champion Ben Welle, who won a couple of tournaments and was part of a team that reached the NCAA tournament. Off the course, he was a Big 12 Conference all-academic selection.

Now life gets real with the game.

The Moorhead High graduate will turn professional later this month with hopes of making a career out of golf. And he knows the reality of it—that KU golf shirt he wore at every meet?

Replaced now by one from his own suitcase.

“There’s definitely a fear of failure, that’s what keeps me going,” Welle said. “But I just want to play some good golf and see what I’m capable of against some good golfers and see how I match up.”

Welle’s pro debut will come at the Minnesota State Open Championship July 22-24 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids. After that, he plans on a few tournaments on the Dakotas Tour—it ends with the Bobcat North Dakota Open at the end of August—with PGA Qualifying School after that.

“My (college) coach always said, there’s no one cheering for you now,” Welle said. “There are no teammates. No coaches. It’s just you and your caddie if you have one.”

He and his teammates reached the NCAA regional, the first time a KU team had done that since 2007. It was a major reversal from the first day he arrived at the school after a standout twoyear career at Scottsdale Community College (Ariz.).

The Jayhawks won four tournaments this season with Welle being the individual medalist at the Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. and the La Classics Invitational in Lafayette, La. The first one was last fall, which came one tournament after he was essentially benched by head coach Jamie Bermel.

“It was a wake-up call,” Welle said. “I knew that if I wanted to make this senior year special that I had to put in the work.”

He took much of June off away from tournament golf, more or less to re-charge the competitive batteries. The day-to-day work toward pro golf begins this week. He’s not one to hang out on the driving range all day, but instead says his practice is more

valuable playing the holes.

“It’s time to start taking it more serious,” Welle said. “I’m excited because playing professional golf is a serious business where entry fees are almost $1,000 and you’re playing for $100,000 purses. Things get really exciting.”

After Q-school, Welle plans on returning to the Phoenix area to play in the OnCore Gateway Tour that runs through midApril. It’s still not a lucrative career and not near the earnings potential of say the PGA Tour— the Gateway money leader this year earned slightly more than $34,000 in 16 events.

But Welle also has two years of collegiate golf in the Phoenix area under his belt and at just 22 years old is ready to give it a shot.

“I think it’s just confidence,” he said. “I always tell myself the difference between amateur golfers and the guys on the (PGA) Tour is confidence. They know they can do it. They know they’ve put the work in and I think that’s the biggest thing.

Winning some tournaments this year definitely helped me progress with my career and as you move on, you keep building confidence.”
