BONDING OVER DIRT AREA GARDEN CLUBS GET THEIR HANDS MESSY STORY BY PIPPI MAYFIELD

rom seeds to plants, vegetables to flowers, garden clubs can be beneficial, and a source of socialization. The Lake Region Garden Club, with members mainly from Detroit Lakes, and the Lake Park Garden Club are growing in popularity and bringing in a new crop of members. “I love to brag about the Lake Park Garden Club,” said Marion Jacobson, who is a part of the Lake Park club. “I think they are a remarkable group of ladies, and our new members are going to be such an asset to the club.” Both clubs have older members who have gardened for many years and are happy to pass along any planting and growing wisdom they have learned along the way. But there are also new members who are just starting to get their fingers dirty. The Lake Park Garden Club has welcomed with open arms their youngest member, a 16-year-old high schooler.

Members of the Lake Park Garden Club take part in Pumpkin Days, tending to the corner garden in town, helping out at the school garden and more. And with some recruitment, the club has grown from about seven people to about 25. “It’s just an amazing little garden club,” said Jane Nelson, who serves as president of the Lake Park Garden Club. “We’re certainly not as large as Detroit Lakes by any means. It’s just an awesome group.” The group has been going for 50 years, and some of the members have been with the club since the beginning. Some of the members are getting up there in age and can’t garden themselves anymore, but they are still dedicated to

their community. “That’s always been so inspirational to me,” Nelson, who has been a member for eight to nine years, said. Getting involved in the Lake Region Garden Club was an easy decision for Betty Smith, who has been a member since 1968. “I love gardening. I have gardened all my life,” she said. “My parents were gardeners. My mother grew the big dinner plate dahlias, and my dad, the vegetables. I learned at an early age to enjoy the fruit that you grow.” She still tends both vegetable and flower gardens. After all these years gardening and being a part of the garden club, Smith said she is still learning new things all the time. “It’s such a learning experience. Everyone is so friendly. It’s just such a fun organization,” she said. PUMPKIN FEST, PLANT SALE Nearly 20 years ago, the Lake Park Garden Club started Pumpkin Fest in Lake Park. “That’s one of our huge commitments to our community each year,” Nelson said. Another long-standing contribution to the Lake Park community is the corner garden at the intersection of Highway 10 and County Road 7 (the main street into Lake Park). “The Lake Park garden Club started it 50 years ago when they started the club and have maintained it, planted it and kept it up all these years,” Nelson said. “They’ve redone it, landscaped it a couple of times.” They also take care of the nativity that goes up each Christmas season in the corner garden. Though they are not sponsoring the Parade of Trees each year, the club is also involved in

They also help with the Lake Park-Audubon Elementary School garden. They judge Yard of the Month competitions during each summer month as well. The Cormorant area is trying to become more active and the Lake Park Garden Club is trying to help their effort by hosting a

plant sale in the spring in conjunction with Cormorant’s book sale. “We want to be actively involved in what we can do to promote gardening and community beautification,” Nelson said. Speaking of plant sales, one of the big public event the Lake Region Garden Club hosts is the SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 15’

annual plant sale held every spring in the Detroit Lakes City Park. “This is an excellent way to get plants at half the cost of at a garden center,” Smith said. “And if they’ve done well for us, they will do well for them.” The plant sale is very well received by the community, club member Lori Bachmann said. They open at 8 a.m., and are usually sold out by 10 a.m. Bachmann said she has learned from going to the plant sale each spring. Each person from the club brings plants they have dug from their gardens to sell. “I’ve learned a lot from seeing those things at the sale. It might be things I have growing in my yard that I didn’t even know what it was,” she said with a laugh. “We moved to a place that there were obviously gardeners here before us because there are a lot of things planted around that house that I didn’t even know what they were.”

HORTICULTURE SHOW One of the bigger events the garden clubs take part in is the annual horticulture show, which Detroit Lakes will host this year. The show is set up on a rotation among the Minnesota State Horticultural Society’s District 11 clubs. There are five of them in the district — Detroit Lakes, Perham, Ada, Mahnomen and Lake Park — and Detroit Lakes is hosting the show on Aug. 6 this summer. This year, the show will be held in the Detroit Lakes Pavilion, and the theme is going to be “Beach Party.” There are 17 categories people can enter for the competition. Show booklets are now available to let people know what the categories are to prep for what they plan to grow and enter in competition. “I don’t think the local people

might want to do.” The Lake Region Garden Club meetings are the third Thursday of every month. “It’s just an opportunity to learn and share, and I have really enjoyed it because being a novice, I would be intimidated by a Master Gardener group, but this is a group of average folks who like to garden,” Bachmann said. The Lake Park Garden Club meets once a month, March-December. The meetings alternate between the Lake Park City Center and the Cormorant Park Place Clubhouse in the development where Nelson lives. They meet the fourth Tuesday of each month. “These are incredible women who have made Lake Park sort of what it is because they just don’t give up,” Nelson said. “We are the lucky ones to interact with people who have that much knowledge.”

CONTAINER GARDENING PLAYFUL AND FLEXIBLE STORY BY VICKI GERDES

f you enjoy gardening year round, but are limited by available space, weather and time considerations, a container garden or two may be the best option for you. Container gardens can be added to just about any space, whether outdoor or indoor, to make it more colorful and inviting — even when said space might at first appear inhospitable to growing things. According to Becker County Master Gardener Cindy Hendrickson, the scope of your container garden is only limited by your own imagination, and the amount of time and effort you want to put into it. “I like to experiment,” she said, noting that just about any container can be used provided it can hold soil (potting soil preferred) and fertilizer (time released is best), and there is proper drainage for watering. “I’ve planted in old wicker baskets lined with landscape fabric,” she said. “I’ve used old wheelbarrows, toy wagons, even a tree stump.” Wooden whiskey or beer barrels, bird baths, copper pots and pitchers are a few other suggestions. Whatever container you choose, make sure there is plenty of room for plants’ roots systems to

grow, she added. “If you’re growing one small plant, the container can be fairly small, but you’re going to be watering it twice a day,” she said. Many greenhouses use pots that are too small for the plants they contain, Hendrickson said — and hanging plants are often the most likely to be placed in pots of inadequate size. “Many times I will purchase these and replant them in a bigger container,” she said. Make sure the container has ample drainage as well, Hendrickson said. Just about any container can be used, but if it is large, Hendrickson recommends lining the bottom with a layer or two of empty, recycled plastic water bottles rather than filling the whole thing with soil. “Otherwise it gets too heavy to move around,” she said. Because flexibility is one of the

biggest attractions of container gardening, making your containers as light and portable as possible is a big advantage. For instance, if the plants aren’t thriving in bright sunshine, move your containers into a shadier area — or vice versa. If one of the plants isn’t quite producing as well as the others, or the color isn’t blending in well, replace it. Both flowers and vegetables adapt well to container gardens, Hendrickson said; she’s often planted tomatoes and herbs in hers. “Vegetable (container) gardens are really popular,” she said — but vegetables typically need larger containers because they tend to grow and expand more than flowers. The content of your container garden should also be planned out carefully before planting, Hendrickson added; pay attention to textures, colors

(For instance, she said, don’t plant daylilies, which thrive in bright sunlight, next to hostas, which are much more shade tolerant.) Perennials can be planted next to annuals, provided that the container has room for the roots of the perennial plants to grow. (Annuals typically have shallower root systems, she noted.) If you do plant perennials in containers, you need to either make plans to transplant them into your garden in the fall, or move them inside your home. “Some people have beautiful flowers blooming indoors over the winter — I just don’t have the room,” she said. When you’re first starting out, it’s probably best to start small and work your way up, Hendrickson added. “Talk to someone who is a gardener, look at pictures and

decide what you want” before starting, she said. “It doesn’t have to be expensive. “It can be very simple — and it’s a great thing to do with children,” Hendrickson said, adding that she’s had a lot of fun making container gardens with her own kids. Thrift stores, rummage sales and garage sales are a good place to start when looking for containers to start your gardening project, Hendrickson said. “You can also paint containers on the outside to make them more colorful,” she added. “I’ve used spray paint or canned paint.” If you see a container garden that you like, take a picture of it to show the people at your local garden center what you’re looking for, she added. “Garden centers offer a world of good advice,” she said — but local outlets like Bergen’s or Becker Pet & Garden are a much

better source than the garden centers at Kmart or Walmart, because the employees are more likely to be gardeners themselves. “Many greenhouses even offer gardening classes, and they’re free,” Hendrickson said. Your local community education program or extension service can also be an excellent resource, Hendrickson said, as they often provide low cost, or even free courses on various forms of gardening. One that she and her fellow master gardeners recently did for Detroit Lakes Community Education drew about 30 people, she added. “There’s a lot of interest out there,” Hendrickson said. his year’s nice spring has made for busy bees buzzing around yards throughout Becker County, as yard beautification is already in full swing. But sprucing things up doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Whether it be gardening or Do-It-Yourself projects, Becker County offers some free supplies that can help those projects thrive. ‘BLACK GOLD’ “They really do refer to compost dirt as ‘black gold,’” said Sandy Gunderson of Becker County Environmental Services. The county offers two large

compost sites that are free and open to the public. One is located at the county’s transfer station right off of Highway 59 north at 24413 Co Rd 144. The other, which is a co-project with the city of Detroit Lakes, is just to the east of Highway 59 north, along Stony Road. “If you bring out shovels, buckets and pickups, you can get as much as you want,” said Gunderson. “And our compost has been cooked for quite a few years; it’s rich and good.” The compost dirt holds twice its weight in water, making it ideal for erosion problems, mitigation for the top lawn and garden-

ing. Mix in a little black, rich compost dirt and things have a way of springing to life. It is great for tilling into a garden in the fall or spring. “If you have a sandy garden, it helps give it some structure,” said Gunderson. “Or if you have clay-based soil, it gives it better structure for gardening.” There are also 10 other compost piles throughout the county, run through the townships. All the piles are essentially created by the public, as people bring decomposable waste such as grass, leaves and brush. And while these piles eventu-

ally break down into nutritious dirt, Gunderson says there are always a couple of factors to consider. “The majority of the people who take this compost dirt just love it, but I have had a few people who have said they’ve gotten weeds that they haven’t gotten before,” said Gunderson, who says because the piles are created from yards throughout the county, there is always the possibility that there are traces of pesticides from treated yards. “We just can’t know that for sure, but if that is a concern for somebody, they should take that into consideration,” said Gunderson, who says the compost piles are also unscreened, meaning there will be chunks of things that may need to

Although public compost piles remain incredibly popular, Gunderson says she also encourages people to create their own right in their backyards. She’ll be spending some time this spring conducting worm composting classes through Frazee and Detroit Lakes community educations. In Frazee it is Monday, May 18, and in Detroit Lakes it is Monday, June 8. The Stony Road compost pile location is open 24-7, while the transfer station and demolition landfill is open Mondays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fridays from

8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon. PAINT SWAP Paint isn’t exactly cheap these days. But at the hazardous waste facility near the Becker County Transfer station, the price is right. “It’s all free,” said Gunderson of the little building at the site where people can drop off unused paint they want to get rid of, and where others who could use it, pick it up at no cost. The county takes old, bad paint that can’t be used, which it ships off to be disposed of properly. The good stuff, however, is put on the shelves for locals to browse through.

People can take as little or as much as they need. Right now there are over 200 gallons of paint just waiting to be used. “We have interior latex, exterior latex, oil-based, varnishes, stains…” said Gunderson, who says she’s known people who have painted entire garages and houses with the free paint. “Not only does it save the users a lot of money because they don’t have to purchase paint, but it also saves the taxpayers money because it’s that much less we have to ship out (for disposal),” said Gunderson. Last year roughly 1,000 people took paint from the facility, which gave out 26 tons of paint. It is open every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

But before homeowners can get started on renovation projects, many must tame the existing mess that may have built up over the winter. Spring is a great time to dive into spring cleaning projects and ready a home for a season of renovation and remodeling. Getting started on spring cleaning can be a tad overwhelming. In 2012, OnePoll asked 1,000 adults living in the United Kingdom how they felt about spring

cleaning, and 41 percent of those surveyed found spring cleaning a daunting process while 68 percent had negative feelings about spring cleaning. But in spite of that initial lack of enthusiasm, respondents said they felt happy and more organized once they finished their spring cleaning. Establishing a plan and setting reachable goals can make spring cleaning a lot less daunting. • Set aside several days for spring cleaning. A long weekend is a great time to do some spring cleaning, as having consecutive days to clean will reduce the chances you grow distracted. • Make a list and purchase all of the supplies you will need. Again, this will help you stay on

Even if you hope to clean the entire house, stick to the one or two rooms that are most desperate for your attention. Divide each task into a series of steps so when you complete each step you will feel proud that you’re making progress. • Create your musical playlist. A playlist full of your favorite songs can provide some inspiration and energy to push you through the spring cleaning when your enthusiasm starts to wane. The music also may take your mind off of the work ahead and help to pass the time.

• Start from the top and work downward. Follow a logical cleaning order. Begin by dusting away cobwebs and lighting fixtures. Clean light switches and walls. Empty closets and then restock them in a more organized fashion. Leave the furniture and flooring for last, as dirt and dust may accumulate on furniture and flooring as you clean other areas of the home.

• Be prepared to bid adieu to some of your stuff. Have a few trash bags at the ready. Reorganize items you won’t be keeping into separate piles, with one pile for items you plan to donate and another for those items you will discard. pring has sprung, and there are many activities to enjoy now that the warmer weather has arrived. Many homeowners make the most of warmer weather by tackling projects around their properties. While autumn is a better time to overseed a lawn for new growth, satisfactory results still can be had if seeding is done early enough in the spring. Grass needs ample time to establish roots and grow strong before the summer heat takes its toll. Many types of grass need six to 12 weeks of

ideal temperatures and growing conditions to germinate and produce a sturdy grass that will grow and endure. Seeding can be done to rejuvenate an existing lawn and fill in bare spots. It also can be done to start a lawn from scratch. The following are some tips to help make seeding projects more successful. • Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and any fallen leaves leftover from autumn and winter. Raking also enables you to inspect the lawn for bare

patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem. • Dust off the mower and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath. • High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this problem, as it pokes holes into the soil to enable oxygenation
