Mollberg glad to be back from torn Achilles BY WAYNE NELSON Forum News Service

Under a sunny sky and a near-perfect temperature, UND opened its 2015 fall football camp Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium. No player, though, perhaps was as happy to be back on the field than quarterback Joe Mollberg, who is coming back from a torn Achilles -- one of the worst injury in sports. “After an injury like that, smaller things become blessings,” said Mollberg. “I’m really glad to be back out there. I’m looking forward to having fun this year and doing whatever I can to help the team.” Mollberg was the starting quarterback last season. In UND’s eighth game, however, Mollberg went down on a pass attempt against Southern Utah. “I was stepping up in the pocket, then went down,” Mollberg said. “There was an awkward pain. I managed to get myself off the field. But I knew something was really wrong. Pretty much right away, we knew it was a torn Achilles.” Mollberg completed 78-of143 passes for 919 yards and 3 touchdowns before his injury. He averaged 114.9 passing yards per game and his QB efficiency rating was 108.46.

A week after his injury, true freshman Keaton Studsrud was named the UND starting quarterback. He held that position the rest of the season and came out of the spring

season as UND’s No.1 quarterback. But UND’s starting QB for the program’s Sept. 5 opener at Wyoming isn’t finalized. UND coach Bubba Schweiger

said all starting positions -- including quarterback -- are up for grabs in fall camp. Mollberg, who will be in that mix, said his recovery went well during the offsea-

son. “I was actually a little bit ahead of schedule,” said Mollberg. “I had great support the whole time. Like any injury, you have to battle through it. I feel good; probably not 100 percent but good enough to go out there and compete. My arm feels great but it will take a little bit at first with my legs. “It’s just great to be out here and see what I’ve got.” Schweigert said Mollberg’s recovery was impressive. “You can teach as much as you want on the board or with the video screen, but right here on the field is where you can do the best teaching,” said Schweigert. “And I was happy with the way Joe moved around on the first day. The challenge will be day after day. You have to be smart with guys who were injured. “We’re really proud of Joe. His return gives us a really good chance to have competition at that position.” UND opened camp with five quarterbacks -- Studsrud, Ryan Bartels, Mollberg and true freshmen Brad Heidlebaugh and Aidan Hartness. As expected, UND’s first practice had good tempo. “Day 1 is really easy,” said Schweigert. “Everyone is excited on Day 1. We want to see if we can be that way on Day 18, 19, 20 and 21.”

Jacobson new head football coach at Frazee BY ROBERT WILLIAMS

Cobbers looking for replacement at quarterback BY ERIC PETERSON Forum News Service

Concordia head coach Terry Horan doesn’t think Alex Grove, Michael Herzog or Zach Kellen necessarily need to be the next Griffin Neal, the record-setting quarterback who completed his Cobbers football career last fall. Herzog is a 2014 Detroit Lakes graduate and the all-time leading scorer in Laker football history. “The parts are around this focal position,” Horan said at the team’s annual media day at Jake Christiansen Stadium. “What I’ve been saying to everybody is ‘You don’t need to put the team on your back.’ “ Grove, Herzog and Kellen are engaged in a three-way competition to replace Neal, a three-year starter who ended his career with a 24-6 record. So while it is yet to be seen who will replace Neal under center, the rest of the Concordia offense returns mostly intact. The Cobbers return four of their five offensive linemen, two dynamic wide receivers and a group of talented running backs. “Whoever gets the job is going to manage the game and facilitate the ball to a lot of good athletes,” said Herzog, a sophomore from Detroit Lakes, Minn. “I love competition. That’s why you play sports.” Grove has the most experience having played in 11 games. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior from Willmar, Minn., has attempted 12 passes in his career. Herzog and the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Kellen, a sophomore, did not play last season. Horan said all three quarterback candidates have been evenly splitting reps through the first five

days of fall camp. “We’ve still got a lot of time to critique them,” said Horan, whose team opens the regular season on Sept. 5 at home against the University of Jamestown. “We’d like to have that named as we go into that Jamestown (game) week.” Concordia opens its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Sept. 19, hosting rival St. John’s at Jake Christiansen. The Cobbers return arguably one of the best wide receiving tandems in program history in Brandon Zylstra and Jon Baune, both seniors. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Zylstra had 77 catches for 1,240 yards and 12 touchdowns over the past two seasons. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Baune had 41 receptions for 519 yards and six touchdowns last fall. “They are probably some of the best in the MIAC and that takes a lot of pressure off a quarterback,” Grove said. “We’re trying to keep everything as simple as possible,” Zylstra said of working with the three potential starting candidates. “We’re trying to be as consistent as possible so it makes the quarterback’s job a lot easier.” Horan described Grove and Herzog as dual-threat quarterbacks with strong leadership qualities. Kellen, a former Fargo South standout, has good size and a strong arm, but isn’t as agile as the other two running the football. “Someone is going to take over and do a wonderful job,” Grove said. “I have a great relationship with Zach Kellen, Mike Herzog. I think competition brings out the best in everybody. I think it needs to be there.”

Jim Jacobson takes over the head coaching duties for the Frazee football team this season replacing Jim Rader. Rader left a winning template that Jacobson plans to morph into another successful season for the Hornets. Jacobson is Frazee alum, class of 2002, and played football under then head coach Dave Trautman. Trautman was preceded by Dennis McCullough, who coached at Frazee for one year before moving to head coaching duties at Valley City State University. Trautman coached from 1995-2003, followed by Steve Carlson until 2007 and Rader up until last season. Rader was Jacobson’s freshman coach in football so their connection goes back more than a decade. “We’re doing a lot of the same type of stuff,” Jacobson said. “We had a lot of success with it. Rader did a great job. We’re building on that, made a few tweaks and adjustments based on our personnel.” The mindset of players in the Frazee system has been on an uptick with recent successful seasons. “It’s been kind of a culture change and we’re starting to get guys to buy into the system of what we do,” Jacobson said. The new head coach is quick to point to the benefits of following his mentor. “We’re riding the coat tails of what Rader did right now and we feel good about that,” Jacobson said. This year’s squad continues an average amount in terms of participation with 41 kids out for the varsity team. “Kids want to be here; they’re working hard and they believe in what we do,” said Jacobson. One of the areas Jacobson will find testy as the season begins in where it counts the most, in the trenches. “We’re young, we don’t have a lot of experience there,” he said.

The Hornets will continue a dynamic variety of defenses to confuse opposing offenses under Jacobson’s scheme. “That’s one of the things that get us an advantage,” he said. “We can make some simple adjustments for us that create some headaches for some offenses.” Hopes are high, but a repeat of last year’s nine wins or running the table in the regular season is cautiously put to the backburner with thoughts on the game that matters most, the first one on the schedule. “It’s always possible,” Jacobson said. “We’ve got some tough games. Breckenridge is what we’re focusing on now. OTC is going to be a big one. They are kind of a perennial power. We’ve never seen Osakis before; Long Prairie-Grey Eagle we don’t really know anything about them. Barnesville will be salty this year.” Another interesting matchup is Staples-Motley week two in Staples. The Cardinals come into this season with a 38-game losing streak that dates back to 2010. “A 3A school you’re going against and we’re a little smaller 2A school,” said Jacobson. “Size, numbers and conditioning can come into play there too.” The two teams have seen each other at summer team camp. “We’re hoping to play well,” said Jacobson. “If we stay healthy, I think we can play with anybody.” The Hornets boast some new faces in the coaching staff as well, this season. Two new assistants join Jacobson’s crew: Russ Hackel, a former NDSU football player who has coached in Detroit Lakes for 15 years and Baxter Bachmann, another of the Bachmann brothers, who graduated from Frazee four years ago. Jason Reierson has moved up to the varsity staff to work with running backs. Returning with Jacobson from last year’s staff are Bill Aufdenkamp and offensive coordinator Ryan Vigen.

son on the road at Section 6-AA Breckenridge. The trip is a repeat from last year’s schedule. Frazee dumped the Cowboys 20-6 in week five and scored all three of their touchdowns in different fashions leading with a punt block, a Tanner Bachmann touchdown run and sealing the game with a passing score in the fourth quarter. Frazee is tied for the smallest enrollment in the Midwest district with Pelican Rapids at 226 students. The Hornets will see some new teams due to the district realignment playing Ottertail Central, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and Osakis. Eyes are big in Class 2A, Section 8 with Hawley losing 21 starters to graduation. The section seems up for grabs after belonging to the Nuggets for the last three seasons. No team was closer to topping Hawley in the section than Frazee last season. They lose a big piece in quarterback Hesston Bachmann and Garrett Malstrom, Roger Thorp and Austin Torma on defense. The Nuggets were the two in Frazee’s 9-2 record defeating the Hornets in Frazee 25-12 and in the Fargodome 34-13 in the section final. The Hornets return leading rusher Tanner Bachmann, who rushed for 1,471 yards and 17 touchdowns last season and leading receiver Riley Utke, who had 25 catches for 394 yards and four touchdowns. The duo will hook up more often this season on offense as Bachmann moves to the quarterback position. “Kind of following in his

brother’s footsteps moving from running back to the quarterback position,” head coach Jim Jacobson said. “We’re trying to be more dynamic and just get the ball in his hands.” Senior linebacker Jonah Lange will have to fill in for the losses on defense. Lange started every game in 2014 on both sides of the ball and will certainly be a team leader in the Hornet huddle. He was also the team’s leading tackler on defense. “He’s a great athlete,” Jacobson said. Jim Jacobson has a good situation for his first year as head coach of the Hornets. “We are excited for the new schedule, new season and to get on the field and compete,” Jacobson said. “We are proud of the tradition of Hornet football and are looking to continue building this tradition.” Frazee will contend with annual power Barnesville, Crookston and a re-tooled Hawley Nugget team for the section crown. “We’re excited to be in the mix with our division play and I think with the other schools in our section we’re definitely going to compete for a home playoff game if not more than that,” said Jacobson. Jensen. Mattson stepped in at quarterback after LP-A lost Tim Brekken to graduation. Even bigger for LP-A is the Raiders are out of the section with Mahnomen, moving from section 8 to section 6 in Class 1A. The realignment, however, does not spare the Raiders from seeing the Indians in the regular season. Mahnomen comes to town in week three, Friday, Sept. 4. Last season ended in a loss to Fosston in the Class 1A, Section 8 semifinals 14-8. The Greyhounds are also on the early schedule for LP-A, hosting the Raiders week two.

RAIDERS

The Lake Park-Audubon Raiders look to build on back-to-back 6-4 marks the past two seasons. Winning seasons have been common the past decade with only three years under the .500 mark. Long gone are the days of 2004-06 when the Raiders posted a two-year mark of 1-16. Yet, it’s been a while since LP-A’s last state tournament visit in 2008, the best year of the past 10, ending with a 10-3 mark in the state semifinals. This year’s success will come on the ground, but in a season-opening loss to Upsala-Swanville, the Raiders showed they can score from long range in the form of quarterback Reece Mattson and receivers Lane Ulmer and Mitch Hall. “We’re going to run the ball,” Head Coach Brad Dunham said. “I know my passing game is there with what

I’ve got coming back with my wide receivers. We have to find ourselves on the offensive side. We really didn’t have an identity on offense last year. Getting some consistency for that will go a long way. You’ll see up spread it out a little bit and bring it in, but you’ll see us run the same plays from both formations.” Much of the load running the ball will be on Paul Jensen at running back. Jensen had 96 carries and two touchdowns on 29 carries last season. He’ll be getting a much larger workload this season. Defensively, Jensen also returns in the secondary where he had 39 tackles and one interception. Hunter Christianson and his five interceptions from last season also returns to a secondary that has the experience to make a difference from the second level. Defense was big last season for LP-A. Outside of a 45-7 loss to Mahnomen, the Raiders gave up 73 points in nine games. Three of their four losses were by a combined nine points. Carter Reann and Trent Rosing will fight for the No. 2 running back position behind

Junior Drew Thompson starts at quarterback and will rely on the leader of the line, senior Travis Baer, to get the Nuggets’ offense on track. Week two brings Warroad to town. The Warriors struggled in 2014 giving up more than 40 points in five games, including a home loss to the Nuggets 41-14 in the final week of the season. While lineups ebb and flow for all teams, this year’s Nuggets squad will get a dose of revenge from many teams on the schedule who were taken to task in an undefeated 2014 regular season. How these kids respond to the fever of their opponents, while learning to strive in starting positions, will determine the fate of the Hawley football team this year.

NUGGETS

The word rebuilding is often used in high school football, but with graduations by mandate, the task of retooling the lineup is just a necessary evil every year. Some years, it takes a bigger effort than others. That is the case in Hawley where a few big names who made huge impacts are now gone. “We’re replacing 21 starters,” Nugget head coach Peter Naatz said. “We’re optimistic about the way this season is going to go. It’s just a matter of taking time to see where people fit the best. It’s going to take some time for the team to gel. We’re just going to have to take our time and work through those speed bumps.” Hawley got a dose of what adjustments need to be made in a season-opening loss to the Perham Yellowjackets 3614.

The game was the first at home in more than a calendar year, as the Nuggets went 10-1 using away fields in 2014 during construction on campus. The construction on the football field was part of an $11.6 million renovation to the high school and elementary school in Hawley. The matchup with Perham was the first in 35 years between the two teams continuing a rivalry on the gridiron that is always a tenuous affair on the baseball diamond and basketball court every year. Gone from last year’s offensive powerhouse are Ben Ellefson, now a freshman at North Dakota State University and Dillon Omberg. Despite being injured late in the season, Omberg was a force running the ball. The Nuggets do have a pair of seniors who bided their time for a shot at the starting lineup. Seniors Jarrett Lange and Austin Koenig will get the call in the backfield and Lange showed he can put up numbers rushing for 151 yards in the season opener. Koenig proved he has a nose for the end zone scoring both of Hawley’s touchdowns in the game.

Pavek. With Pavek at the helm, the Indians can double down on a solid shot at the state title. The Blackjacks, state runners-up to Minneota last season, have only five seniors returning and with the early start to the season, experience counts more this season. Mahnomen has plenty of that. (DL Sports Editor Robert Williams contributed to this story)

INDIANS

A 39-game win streak ended last season for Mahnomen at the hands of the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks in the state quarterfinals at Alexandria. On top of winning 39 straight games, Mahnomen had a streak of two Class 1A state titles. It was Dawson-Boyd that got them again. In their last 41 games, the Indians are 1-2 against Dawson-Boyd and 38-0 against everyone else. Mahnomen looks to build a new streak and the Indians have the pieces to do so, despite the fact the Indians have to rebuild their offensive line. Big-time playmakers are back for Mahnomen. Quarterback Tom Pavek is back after rushing for 1,329 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. He averaged 12.3 yards per carry. Jake Worms had six rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown and rushed for 444 yards on just 38 carries. Mitch Foss averaged 10.3 yards per carry, rushing for 764 yards and 10 touchdowns. Mahnomen has Foss, Pavek, and Worms for the running game, but also have Kody Lefebvre, who missed all of last season.

“Our strengths will be our skill people on offense and solid team defense,” Head Coach John Clark, Jr. Said. “We will have some exceptional playmakers in Pavek, Lefebvre, Worms and Foss.” Defense is never usually a problem for Mahnomen. They’ll have Pavek and Lefebvre in the secondary with Worms and Dan Olson on the defensive line and Jerell Londo and Foss leading the linebackers. “We graduated our entire offensive line, so that will be a work in progress. We do have lots of game experience in the line, so that should help the transition. Once again, we will rely on a stout defense. “Foss and Londo have a year of experience under their belt, so we expect big things from them. Our secondary is also experienced and very athletic. I would expect us to be very tough to score on this year. The team has high expectations for the season and we hope to make a long run in the playoffs.” The last time Mahnomen ended a season with a loss, the Indians responded with 39 straight wins and two state titles. The Indians blew out Pillager 53-0 at home to start the 2015 campaign and the new streak. Lefebvre got the ball rolling on the first play from scrimmage scoring on a 63-yard run and the onslaught was on, including two rushing touchdowns and two touchdown passes, one to Lefebvre, from

ready to step up and show what it can do at the varsity level,” Flaten said. Returning junior quarterback Brett Braseth returns to take snaps under center with Brady Sirjord, a junior, Colby Neset, a senior, and Solomon Stene, another senior coming out of the backfield. “We will have a running back by committee so we can keep them fresh,” Flaten said. The defensive line returns senior leaders in ends Jonah Sather and Sam Hilde sandwiching senior defensive tackle Dylan McCollum. Sam Bates, a junior, leads the linebacker corps. “Defensively we will look for Jonah Sather, Sam Hilde, Dylan McCollum, and Wyatt Koskela to be a big force for us up front”

TITANS

The Norman County East/ Ulen Hitterdal Titan football team enters the 2015 season with a load of confidence after a big push last year that saw the Titans reach the state 9-man semifinals. The Titans pulled off a big 14-13 upset of then-ranked and undefeated No. 2 Waubun on the Bombers’ home field in the Section 6A semifinals. “That game in Waubun really made the kids realize that they could play with and beat anyone,” head coach Dustin Flaten said. NCE/U-H went on to win the Section title as the No. 5 seed 29-20 over Nevis, but the goal line stand in the final minute to knock off Waubun was the biggest upset of the playoff day last year. It was also a first for both schools dating back to preco-op play. Norman County East had not won a section championship since 1993, and Ulen-Hitterdal hadn’t won one since 2006. The Titans met their North Tri-County foes from Waubun in the regular season with the Bombers winning handily 22-7 at FargoDome. By October, the Titans had become a different team. With the switch to District play this season, both rivals will again be lined up against each other in District 9-West (North 2), along with AdaBorup, Cass Lake-Bena, Norman County West, and Win-EMac. Park Christian and Rothsay are gone from the conference standings having been assigned to District 9-West (South 1). The Titans open the season Saturday, Aug. 22 at home in Ulen versus Stephen-Argyle. The Storm finished the season with a record of 7-2 falling to Kittston County Central at home 27-0 in the Section semis. Waubun will also visit Ulen in an important week seven game Oct. 2. Three of the Titans first four games are at home with a Sept. 3 date in Hallock against Kittson County Central. Home field advantage was a plus for the 2014-15 Titans as NCE/U-H was a perfect 4-0 in Ulen. The four losses came at Ada Borup 7-6, 22-7 to Waubun at Fargodome, 26-6 at Win-EMac, and the 20-13 state semifinal loss at St. Cloud State University to Edgerton/Ellsworth. There will be plenty of new faces in the lineup for the Titans this season. “We graduated 11 seniors, but we had a strong (junior varsity) team which is now

time,” said Clark. The Bombers showed little sign of that in the season opener throttling Kittson County Central 40-20. Junior quarterback Peyton Syverson proved an effective replacement to Spaeth with a monster effort of 163 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Syverson made an impact as a sophomore on special teams, a threat to score on punt returns and also showed he has the speed to go the distance on offense from anywhere on the field. His longest score of the opener was from 76-yards in which he baffled the second level of the KCC defense on an entertaining ramble to the end zone. Week seven showcases what has to be a target on the schedule – a trip to Ulen to face the Norman County EastUlen-Hitterdal Titans. The Titans shut down Waubun and knocked the then No. 2 ranked Bombers out of the playoffs in a 14-13 grudge match. (DL Sports Editor Robert Williams contributed to this story)

A big reason behind that was Darius Woods-Steichen, who had 16 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks last season. He also rushed for 374 yards and five touchdowns on 38 carries. Dayton Makey is another guy Waubun coach Paul Clark is going to need. Clark said Makey will probably not come off the field this season, playing running back, linebacker, kicker, punter and kick returner. Makey showed good signs last season of breaking through as a sophomore. He averaged 9.4 yards a carry, rushed for 273 yards and two touchdowns, caught three passes for 29 yards and a touchdown, had six tackles (three for loss), punted and kicked extra points and field goals last season. A lot is on Woods-Steichen to lead the Bombers, but Makey could take a lot off his shoulders if the junior has a breakout season. “We have an extremely difficult start to the season. We hope that helps us to be in contention come section playoff

BOMBERS

Much was talked about the read-option offense for Waubun last season and the Bombers lost their two leaders of that in quarterback Jordan Spaeth and running back Ryan Weber. The pair combined for 2,697 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. What was generally overlooked was the Waubun defense. The Bombers defense gave up a total of 75 points in 10 games last season. “We have six returning starters on defense and four on offense, but we lost most of our depth,” Head Coach Paul Clark said. “Keeping healthy will be a major goal.”

Laker football ready for start of 2015 campaign

BY ROBERT WILLIAMS

The Detroit Lakes’ football team is coming off a 9-1 season under head coach Flint Motschenbacher in his 18th year at the helm. Last year’s team gradu-

ated more than 20 seniors and some key playmakers, but this year’s squad comes in with 21 seniors and plenty of opportunity to fill the holes in the lineup. The only loss last season ended the year in Alexandria. Rocori quarterback Alex

Budde scored three fourth quarter touchdowns to lead the No. 3 Spartans over the top-seeded Lakers 21-6 in the Section 8-4A final ending a two-year run of state tournament appearances. That memory has not fully dissipated but this year’s team

has ideals and goals in the present of more importance to worry about. “We just need to do what we’ve been doing for the past three weeks, work hard, have fun, fly around,” senior lineman James Huwe said. “Worry about the first

game; you can’t focus on later in the season, we can only work on one thing at a time,” Josh Bollig said.

DETROIT LAKES SCHEDULE

in 2014. “We’re going to fly around and hit some kids,” Huwe said. The highlight on the schedule is the renewal of the heated rivalry with Fergus Falls. The teams have not played each other in more than a decade. The last matchup was a 29-28 Fergus Falls home victory Sept. 9, 2005. The Otters come to town Friday, Sept. 4. But Little Falls is in the way and should appear at Mollberg Field with a chip on their collective shoulders wanting payback for last year’s seasonending loss to the Lakers. The Flyers are led by head coach Joe Bartos, in his first season leading the Flyers. Bartos was most recently a defensive backs coach at Roseville from 2010-14. Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Detroit Lakes has won their last three openers. The last loss was 23-21 to Fargo Shanley in 2010. The Lakers will play in the Midwest district the regular season as the school with the largest enrollment (726). Fergus Falls is second on the list with 655. Frazee and Pelican Rapids are the smallest schools in the district (226). The district is split into three divisions. The Red division is the same as last year’s Heart O’ Lakes North Conference, other than DilworthGlyndon-Felton being replaced by Fergus Falls. In the playoffs, DL remains in Section 8-4A Fergus Falls, Little Falls, Rocori, Thief River Falls and Willmar.

LAKERS

That first game is Saturday, Aug. 22 at home versus Little Falls in a rematch of the 2014 section semifinals, a game won in DL by the Lakers 35-21. The Laker defense was able to contain the three-prong attack of Flyers’ quarterback Austin Fenske, running back Michael Orr and receiver Kyle Kabanuk. All three players graduated and the Flyers kick off the season in a similar boat as the Lakers in trying to find this year’s playmakers and drive sustainers. The solid core of the Lakers will be three starters on the offensive line who will need to protect first-year starting quarterback Bollig and open holes for bruising sophomore running back Ben Nordmark. Bollig takes over for Christian Hedstrom, and Nordmark saw extensive time in the backfield last year making a big impact as a freshman. “We still have a lot of size in our line left so we have to be able to run over people, like last year,” Bollig said. “It’s football, we’ve got to do both sides; we’ve got to be able to throw the ball. That’s going to be big for us if we can execute both ways.” One target in the passing game will be senior Jacob Richter. Richter was effective in the slot last season and a crucial player on key third down plays. “I just have to go out and compete my hardest on every play,” Richter said. “Josh is going to put the ball up and I just have to try to do my best

to make the play.” Richter had 14 catches for 238 yards in 2014, third on the team behind Ryan Cihak and Sam Champa, both graduated. Nordmark came on as the season progressed to lead the Lakers in rushing with 556 yards on 104 carries. Nordmarks’ ability to run the ball with speed and power is a luxury for Bollig and DL should be able to bruise opponents and play smashmouth football. A successful combination of the offensive line and Nordmark’s rushing will allow for instances of clock management in important parts of the game. “They’ll make holes,” said Nordmark. “I just have to run through them.” A number of other underclassmen have made moves during practice to make impacts early in the season. “There are a couple sophomores and juniors that always stick out,” Huwe said. “I feel that teams need those kids to grow young like that.” The Lakers return plenty of weapons on offense and the experience of Nordmark and Richter gives Bollig some outs as he gets comfortable under center. Last year, Hedstrom was strong in the pocket throwing for more than 1,300 yards as DL proved they could score from all over the field. “We should be well-rounded offensively,” said Bollig. “I’m just going to do the simple things and take it play by play.” “We can’t make mistakes,” Nordmark said. “We have to play at the level that we can and should be playing at. If we do that, we’ll go very far this year.” Last year, the DL defense was a nice compliment to the high-flying offense as the Lakers pulled out two key victories in low scoring games on the road defeating D-G-F in Glyndon 14-13 and winning at Perham 9-7. The Lakers outscored their opponents 263-80 in 10 games

are sandwiched in five weeks with the long road trip to Warroad in the middle to face the Warriors Sept. 18.

VIKINGS

The Pelican Rapids Vikings’ football team comes off a .500 season after going 5-5 in 2014. The mark has been one that Pelican rarely dips under having recorded seven winning seasons the prior nine years. Pelican’s only dips below .500 were in 2011-12, a 3-6 season, and 2009-10, a 3-7 year. In the last decade, head coach Dave Haugen has a record of 65-39. The last three seasons have seen one-game dips in wins. Pelican was 7-3 in 2012, 6-4 in 2013, leading to the even-steven 5-5 mark last year. “We have good speed, so need to find as many ways as possible to take advantage of that,” Hauen said. The Vikings have seven seniors on the roster, so will definitely be seeking contributions from underclassmen. “We are very young, so how quickly we learn and if we can hold up physically will go a long way to determine our success in terms of wins and losses,” said Haugen. One big twist to the schedule is the absence of Heart O’ Lakes Conference archrivals Perham. The Yellowjackets and Vikings have squared off in week one for bragging rights since 2006-07. With the Minnesota State High School League’s mandate to switch to districts this season, one casualty is a big rivalry to start the season. The Vikings will play in the newly-formed Midwest White district, which is filled with former HOL foes, with

the addition of Warroad and Crookston. Barnesville, Breckenridge, and two defending Section champions, 8AA Hawley and two-time Section 8AAA champions DilworthGlyndon-Felton round out the district. Pelican will face Hawley and D-G-F at home, the Nuggets in week three and the Rebels in week seven, but the season begins with two road games at Osakis against the Silverstreaks and United North Central in Sebeka. The last time the Silverstreaks and Vikings met was in the 2013 Section 6AA playoff opener won by Pelican 4930 at home. All four Viking home games

going to play the same style of defense we have always played. We are going to bring our game and play hard.” The Yellowjackets will have an experienced coaching staff alongside Knutson. “We have a great coaching staff and we are all excited to see what the kids can do,” Knutson said. “These guys are awesome. I trust them. I tried to add it up and it was more than 150 years of experience on the staff, and that’s always a good thing.” Ryan Beachy joins the staff for 2015, while John McEachran, Lance Rach,

YELLOWJACKETS

The Perham Yellowjacket football team kicked off the 2015 season with a bang, knocking off Hawley, 36-14, in their road opener. It snapped a losing streak of five games, which dated back to last season. The Yellowjackets have quickly put last season behind them, a season that saw the Yellowjackets finish 3-6 overall. Many of the six losses were by small margins. The Yellowjackets hope to turn several of those close losses from last season into wins when this new season. The interim tag has been removed and Kyle Knutson takes over for his first full season as head coach of the Yellowjackets. It’s one of many changes that have been brought upon the Yellowjackets in the 2015 season. The Yellowjackets will have to replace quarterback Mason Malikowski as well as running back Cole Schmitz amongst a talented crew of seniors that graduated from last year’s team. “We had great leadership last year and those guys are going to be missed,” Knutson said. “The crew of kids that are coming up are stepping into their shoes very well. They are great examples of the players that we want to have and they are awesome leaders.” While having to deal with changes on the field, the Yellowjackets will have to deal with changes off the field due to scheduling conflicts with the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium for the Minnesota State High School League’s State Tournament. Due to the conflicts, the

preseason is one week shorter than usual, eliminating preseason scrimmage fests, which will make the season opening contest unique in that it will be the first contact against an opposing team for teams across the state of Minnesota. While across Minnesota, participation numbers are down, in Perham, the numbers are up according to Knutson. “We are excited. We have a great group of guys and our numbers are up this year,” Knutson said. “The kids are working hard, so we are excited.” Returning to the Yellowjackets from last year’s team will be seniors Chandler Rach, Aaron Wilchewski, Tyler Berby, Josh Germolus and Dylan Perrine. Tanner Neyens returns on the line as well. Knutson said one of the team’s keys will be their ability to work hard with the shortened preseason. “We have to continue to work hard. We have a shortened preseason so we have to stay focused and work hard, as is every other team,” Knutson said. “I have confidence in our guys; that they will do a great job with it.” The shortened preseason altered practice plans with the Yellowjackets having to install the playbook over the summer, due to the shortage of time in the fall. “We had to do a lot of install in the summer because we don’t have the time this fall,” Knutson said. “We have to structure our practices in a way that we are not wasting any time.” Knutson said the offense will continue the same mindset that they have had the past few seasons and will be running the option out of multiple sets. Defensively, he said the team should be solid and a team strength as it was a season ago. “We are going to be pretty solid. We have a lot of guys returning that have experience there,” Knutson said. “We are
