F
or the first time in three years, the Pine to Palm champion will return to defend his title. “Absolutely,” Ben Welle said. “I love it. It’s a good tournament to end the summer on. All the local kids play it. The course is always great and there is a lot of risk and reward out there.” Jon Trasamar, the 2013 champion missed defending while playing on the Dakota tour. 2012 champ Beau Hanson qualified for the U.S. Amateur tournament which was held the same weekend in 2013 negating his chance to return. Welle is coming off a tough loss at the 112th Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship at Northland Country Club in mid-July. “It was pretty close,” Welle said. “It’s just golf. A couple shots got away from me on
the back nine, but I had a really good week.” Welle took a three-stroke lead into the final round but was caught by a surging Jon DuToit, the eventual champion, who came back from five strokes down to win. Welle had a lengthy birdie putt on 18 to force a playoff but missed. DuToit finished 1-over for the tournament while Welle, who led Joel Johnson and Trent Peterson by three strokes going into the final round, finished second at 2-over. Welle, a senior-to-be on the University of Kansas golf team in the fall, lost the lead after bogeying the par-3 12th and par-4 13th holes. He caught the right-side bunker on No. 13 and had to twoputt. On No. 13, his approach bounced off the back of the green, his chip out from the rough only reached the fringe and from there he two-putted.
Welle finished with four bogeys and one birdie for a final-round 74 after shooting 70 on Tuesday and 71 on Monday. It wasn’t the bogeys that haunted him, but the missed birdie attempts. “Bogeys are going to happen out here. I just didn’t capitalize on the birdies,” said Welle, who finished second at the 2013 State Am by one stroke. “It was tough because even when you put it within 10 feet, sometimes you don’t know where it’s going with the lake. You land it next to the pin, you better have some spin on it or it’s bouncing right over.” DuToit and Welle have history in that both golfers shared the Minnesota High School Class AAA state championship in 2012 at Bunker Hills. “Jon is a really good guy,” Welle said. “Every time we golf together we have a lot of

fun.” Welle, a Moorhead graduate, will play in his upcoming senior season this fall and third overall year for the Jayhawks, after a year at Scottsdale, Arizona Community College fresh out of high school in 2012-13. “I’ve kind of kept this summer low key and plan on amping it up for my senior year,” he said. “I want to concentrate on my senior year and hopefully get a college tourney win under my belt.” Welle got off to a hot start at Kansas after winning the Pine to Palm last summer being named the November Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Month recording three top-10 finishes in his first five meets of the 2014-15 season. “Junior season went really well,” he said. “I started off the year in Michigan and Colorado and played

well there. The spring season pretty well, a I had a good Big 12 tournament at Southern Hills in Tulsa until the last day. It was a very fast year, went by really quick.” Welle used a consistent approach to win the Pine to Palm in 2014 playing down the middle of the fairway and keeping risks to a minimum, sometimes putting the driver away on the tee box. “That’s kind of the strategy for match play,” said Welle. “You don’t necessarily put the brakes on, but play smarter, and don’t make stupid decisions to give the other person momentum. Anybody with momentum can get something going. Hit the driver straight. Get on the green and make some putts.” His strategy helped him win close matches down the stretch at the 2014 Pine to Palm defeating Coy Papachek 1-up in the quarterfinals,

Welle will wrap up his summer golf season in Detroit Lakes before heading back to school, as the Jayhawks open the fall season at the Rod Myers Invitational Saturday, Sept. 12 in Durham, N.C. at the Duke University Golf Club. While Welle’s concentration is on first defending the Pine to Palm crown and getting back to college, future plans also revolve around continue his golf career at the next level. “After college, I plan to move somewhere down south, probably Arizona, to try out the pro golf life and see how it treats me,” he said. “If it doesn’t work out, I don’t want to look back and say I didn’t try.”

M
oorhead’s Ben Welle practiced consistency at its finest at the 2014 Pine to Palm and it paid off. Welle won the 82nd championship after he finished tied for second with Greg Melhus for medalist honors. Grady Meyer won that honor with an eight-under par 134. Welle used straight tee shots and pin-point accurate approach shots to the green to down Matt Rachey 4 and 3 in the championship match. “Once it gets deeper in qualifying, I put away my driver and just use my four iron to tee off and put the ball down the middle of the fairway,” Welle said. “Even though my driver is straight, when you’re up in the match, you don’t have to put pressure on yourself. “I just kept hitting down the middle all day and gave myself putts.” Welle beat Mark Robinson 1-up in the morning semifinal match, while Rachey downed
Thomas Strandemo 1-up, as well. The match started with a win for Welle, as it did for much of the tournament. The former Spud shot 9-under par alone on the first hole through his seven rounds of play in the tournament, including qualifying. Sunday’s championship match was no different, as he sunk a birdie putt to take a 1-up advantage. “That hole, I just felt good on the tee shot, it sets up well for my draw,” Welle said. Rachey played right with Welle for most of the match, the only difference was the University of Minnesota Gopher fell into trouble a few times, which cost him. One of those times came on hole five, where Rachey’s drive drifted in the right rough with the misfortune of landing behind several trees. Welle found the fairway and his approach shot landed just on the fringe, where he two-putted for birdie.
A lip-out putt from 12-feet downhill by Rachey put the Gopher down two, where the score stayed until after the turn. “I thought I rolled my putts well today, and they were going in during other matches,” Rachey said. “They just were not going in today.” Having a 2-up advantage at the turn played perfectly into Welle’s hands, as he stayed playing consistent, while most of the pressure was on Rachey. “When you get the turn and are up a couple, you obviously feel good and put the pressure on your opponent, making him force some shots,” Welle said. Rachey took hole seven after throwing a dart at the cup from the right rough, whereas Welle had a long 40-foot birdie putt, which was short. The daggers came on holes 11 and 12, where Rachey found the right rough off the tee on 11 and Welle was fairway.

Welle’s approach landed inside 10 feet, while Rachey’s birdie putt ended up being downhill from 30 feet out. Welle drained his, while Rachey’s effort when right of the cup. Rachey found trouble again off the tee on 12 and ended up in the right rough, which is occupied by a bevy of trees. Welle put his fairway approach shot within the 10-foot circumference of the hole and after Rachey hit bunker out of the rough, he conceded the hole and slipped down three. “I drove the ball straight the first match of the day (semifinals), but couldn’t find the fairway in the championship match,” Rachey said. The next two holes were halved, with the finale on 15, where Welle’s approach shot out of the fairway was right at the pin. Rachey’s shot out of the right rough skipped past the green and was saved from out of bounds by the brick layering of the 16th tee box. By then, Rachey was in dire straits and Welle sunk his par putt for the win. With the last two champions of Beau Hanson and Jon Trasamar not being able to defend their titles, the junior Jayhawk golfer at the University of Kansas is planning on a 2015 defense. “This feels awesome, this one feels real good,” Welle said. “I am absolutely coming back; it’s a great tournament and I love playing here.”

He was playing Don Orman in a first flight consolation match and the ace was said to be “the first in several years” at the Detroit Country Club. 2. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1946—Georgia Tainter Goff, Fargo, on the 161-yard 12th hole, using a 4-wood. The ace was made during qualifying and came in the final year the Pine to Palm Tournament had a women’s division. 3. Friday, Aug. 15, 1952—Bud Nolan, Minneapolis, on the 165yard 16th hole, using a 5-iron. Nolan was playing in the Sallie Flight and won his match over Dick James, also of Minneapolis, in 20 holes. A member of the Meadowbrook Golf Course, it was the second holein-one of his career. 4. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1958—Andy Lindvig, Fargo, on the 179yard 8th hole, using a 4-iron. The hole-in-one came during a qualifying round. 6. Thursday, Aug. 9, 1962—George Cram, Bismarck, N.D., on the 179-yard 8th hole, using a 4-iron. Cram, the North Dakota State Amateur Golf Tournament champion in 1961 and 1962, went on to defeat Carl Liebovich of Rockford, Ill., during the match when he had the ace. 7. etroit Country Club is embarking on a capital campaign centered on course improvements to coincide with the upcoming 100-year celebration of the Club’s creation in 2016. The improvements are scheduled for two main phases, the renovating of the cast iron irrigation system that dates back to installation 80 years ago, along with green and collar renovations and cart path replacement. The irrigation improvements in the fall of 2015, at a cost of $200,000, will allow for green rebuilding in the following two years. “The infrastructure needs some improvement,” Centennial Chair John Emery said. “There’s some urgency.” A dry and warm spring
showed the need to improve the irrigation system in 2015 as the course appeared noticeably blotchy waiting for the aging watering system to come online to full capacity. The entirety of the project list is to raise $1,000,000 and do it by sticking to the traditional nature of the club. There are no plans to sell naming rights or use any corporate sponsorship at the course or its events as a means to raise funds. “We will have recognition events for people who help with the project and some gifts for them,” Emery said. “We also don’t want people thinking if they give now they’re solving the whole problem. We want to get this initial $200,000.” An interesting part of the fundraising project is that
15 percent of the total will be endowed into a trust that began as a $10,000 donation from Bremer Bank. “Every year we collect money during season pass fees and are building that up to use as an endowment for beautification of the course,” said Emery. The Country Club is a nonprofit organization that has always funded itself. The city owns all the property. “Following with how successful the Mountain and the Community Center have been, we decided we should go to our season pass holders and Pine to Palmers first,” Emery said. “We’re going to our users, not a big public campaign.” It makes sense as all three unique venues in Detroit Lakes are built on the same

Detroit Country Club will be celebrating its centennial and moving forward with needed improvements into the second century of existence. model of public ownership, which has proved quite successful. The Club is quietly raising money in the early stages of fundraising by contacting key givers to get a start on the irrigation system funds. While it is a formally run campaign, it is not a public fundraiser specifically due to the non-profit tax status of the Club and avoiding mandated audits necessitated if the club was to go to a more public fundraising campaign. “Next year, when we finish this part, we’ll be a little more open, but with the Pine to Palmers we’re going to focus on the history and tradition,” said Emery. “For our locals, we want to focus on what we do for the kids.” DCC is not a private club, but a public course that hosts a number of events throughout the season, not all golf-related, that benefit local and regional student-athletes, while holding to the Club’s mission of pro-

viding a quality golf experience at an affordable price to the general public. DCC junior golf programs average 100 students each spring at no cost, along with a summer program that hosts Minnesota Golf Association events. All city events and junior golf at Lakeview are hosted at reduced costs. DCC also employs many young adults in the food and beverage industry, along with positions in course maintenance and management. Each fall, Lakeview hosts home cross country meets and provides a unique course of changing elevation for high school racing. The Club has gotten a number of early contributions from local businesses to get the project off the ground. Bremer Bank contributed $1,000 for the expense checking account.

ETROIT LAKES — Kent Spriggs, the 2012 Mid-Am runner-up, won his first championship at the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament in 2014 defeating Perham’s Bob Cavanagh four and three.. Spriggs got out of the gate in a hurry going three-up after three holes and cruised to victory pushing the lead to the brink at four-up after play on No. 15. “I played okay,” Spriggs said. “I only made a couple bogies, three birdies. Got up and down a few times when I had to. Bob struggled early. He gave me three holes in a row. That kind of got me up and I played pretty steady from there.”
While Spriggs was free to attack the course at opportune times, Cavanagh battled to stay in contention on a final day that was just not his. With Spriggs two-up after five, Cavanagh drove into a bit of trouble in the trees, while Spriggs set himself up with a nice drive culminating in a 25-foot eagle putt, eventually winning the hole with a birdie to extend the lead. “I tried to still play aggressively when I could and just make some putts and stay out of trouble. You don’t really have to go for it too much, play conservatively when you have to.” Play continued in Spriggs’ favor into the back nine. On 13, Spriggs had a good
look from the green in regulation, while Cavanagh’s approach had him chipping from the edge. Cavanagh sunk his putt to halve the hole moving to the par three 14th. From the tee, Cavanagh was left of the green just past the bunker. Spriggs was on the green waiting on a birdie putt. Spriggs pushed his lead to three-up and finished the match on the par four 15th. Spriggs completed a three year challenge at the Mid-Am championship having added a Medalist honor in 2013 to his runner-up finish in 2012. Cavanagh (148) and Spriggs (149) finished qualifying in second and fourth place behind medalist Scott Uithoven.

S
cott Linnerooth led the entirety of the front nine of the 2014 Seniors championship match against Rick Johnson and held on to clinch on the 18th green 1-up for his second Pine to Palm title. “This one was for dad,” Linnerooth said. Scott’s father Jim was the Seniors runner-up in 1992 to three-time champion Bill Swanston. Johnson and Linnerooth were a lively pair on the course, keeping the competition light-hearted with each other and the gallery. “It was a lot of fun. He’s (Johnson) a great guy. That makes a big difference.” Sense of humor helped
in some sense, as both golfers battled the course, themselves, and the wet conditions of Sunday after Saturday night rains at Detroit Country Club. “It was a struggle,” said Linnerooth. “There were times when we both played okay, but we both struggled. We didn’t happen to play our best golf and I came out on top and got lucky.” Linnerooth was up three twice on the front nine but Johnson closed the gap to onedown on the 10th hole. The 10th tee box provided some excitement after Linnerooth avoided penalty strokes having knocked his ball off the tee on a practice swing. Having not officially addressed the ball, the pen-
alty was negated. The close call did affect his drive which lined left into the trees. Johnson picked up a hole when Linnerooth was forced into a long bogey attempt to save the 10th hole and conceded upon the miss. With momentum, Johnson drove the middle of the fairway on 11, while Linnerooth scrambled from the left rough. Both players hit approach shots within inches of each other and parred to halve the hole, indicative of the even play between the two seniors all day. The pair battled back and forth with Linnerooth holding his one-hole advantage to the end of the round.

o-medalist and threetime champion Chuck Renner won his fourth Super Seniors championship, playing injured to a victory over Don Bradford, at the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament Sunday afternoon. Renner hit a hybrid club to 20-feet below the third extra hole and two-putted for victory. Bradford shot to the front edge of the green on hole No. 3 to a pin close to the back of the green and ran a putt by five-feet. Bradford lost his tying putt to the right of the hole to end the match. “He’s a good player, good putter and just very smart about what he did - that’s why it was a tough match all day,” Renner said. Renner won his fourth title playing with two detached tendons in his wrist that affected his play all weekend. “It caught me two days ago,” he said. “Today, I hit
some bad shots because I just couldn’t find the grip.” Both players played the final in opposing conditions to Saturday, which was hot and humid. Sunday’s play was in temperatures in the 60s after a night of rainfall changing the conditions of the greens. “They might have been just a touch slower, but you still have to give the greens respect if you’re above the hole and it depends on which hole you’re above it,” Renner said. “If you’re on eight, it’s still incredibly fast. You just have to look at each putt and different sides and figure is this very fast or extremely fast?” Both golfers had putt attempts for the win on the first two extra holes. Bradford was in the fairway on hole No. 1 after a nice out from the trees along the left side of the fairway, while Renner was in good shape in the left rough. Renner hit a 60-yard chip from a downhill lie to the
back left edge of the green and putted close enough to tap in to set up a two-putt to halve for Bradford, which he did. On two, Bradford avoided overhanging tree limbs in the right rough from 150 yards away hitting an iron to the right edge of the green leaving a lengthy uphill putt. Renner drove straight down the middle and his approach left a 10-foot uphill put for the win. Both golfers two-putted to move to the third and deciding extra hole where the experienced Renner clinched his fourth championship. “I set objectives and then you try to figure out what do I have to do to achieve that?” he said. “So, I set up a little plan this year about what I was going to do and it had to revolve around the wedges, because I’ve been weak with the wedges and the putting. The wedges and the putter are what helped me this year.”
