O

ne of the strengths of a Macquarie degree is the emphasis on learning outside of the lecture halls through ’flipped classrooms’, Professional and Community Engagement (PACE) and the Global Leadership Programme (GLP) as well as opportunities to attend conferences, study or join an exchange programme overseas. In this edition, we hear from Tierneigh Parnell and Madeline Morrison and their adventures in India and Norway.

ACK NOWLEDGEMEN T OF COUNTRY Dunmore Lang College acknowledges the traditional owners of the land upon which the College is situated.

In 2014, we were honoured to name the College magazine, Ngarra, which means ‘listen‘ in the Darug language and we are grateful for the invaluable assistance provided by Mr Chris Tobin, Uncle Lexodious Dadd and Aunty Elaine Chapman in assisting us with this.

This shared journey is deeply rooted in the College’s history and it is our privilege to continue the legacy of Miss Dorothy Knox, who established the College, and Rev John Dunmore Lang, our namesake, who were both strong advocates for the rights of Indigenous Australians.

2 DUNMORE LANG COLLEGE

Connections with the wider communities that surround the students are important and this year, we have four pairs of siblings in the College- Katena and Joe Valastro, Tayler-Jai and James McAlister, Peta and Chloe Larkin as well as Josh and India Charlier. Next year we are looking forward to welcoming another two siblings for 2017.

Families and significant others are always welcome to visit the College and if the room is available, parents are able to stay overnight and join students for a meal in the Dining Room.

For returning and new students next year, we are hosting an event for families and friends in the second half of Semester One. More details will be sent out at the beginning of the year so you can make your travel arrangements.

Finally, I would like to congratulate two of our senior students honoured at the end of year Valedictory Dinner.

The 2017 John Dunmore Lang Senior Scholar Award, generously funded by Mr John Almgren AM and Mrs Yvonne Almgren has been awarded to Tierneigh Parnell in recognition of her extraordinary achievements over her time at Dunmore Lang College. These include but are in no way limited to a student exchange to National Law School of India; volunteer teaching in Kenya, Zambia, the Northern Territory; Delegate to the Global Leadership Symposium Series in Brazil; mentor and tutor for young Indigenous women; LGBTIQ+ Ally through the Macquarie University Network Support; NAAUC Delegate and Delegate to the Northern Territory Youth Summit and Conference. Tierneigh has earned a number scholarships in recognition of her outstanding academic results and at the same time she has given back to many communities including the College over the past four years.

Congratulations to the College staff and students on another successful year. All the best to the students for your exam results and safe travels over the holiday break.

ALASDAIR MURRIE-WEST

Firstly, Kayla Atkins who received the Margaret Saville Prize for outstanding contribution to Dunmore Lang College. Despite a very strong field of candidates, Kayla’s nomination stood out due to her often quiet but nonetheless significant contribution over a number of years in the College. Not only did she contribute her vocal skills to the 2014 Musical but she has also held leadership roles such as International Committee Head as well as two years as a Residential Adviser (RA).

In addition, Kayla was also quietly proactive providing a voice for others, supporting students to access assistance and ensuring that as a College community we continue to reflect on what we do and how we can improve. In particular, the nominators highlighted Kayla’s commitment to servant leadership and the way she gives so much to others with no expectation of recognition or accolades.

WELLNESS WEEK THIS MAY, DUNMORE LANG COLLEGE HELD ITS INAUGURAL WELLNESS WEEK. THE EVENT WAS IMPLEMENTED AFTER DELEGATES LISTENED TO A PRESENTATION AT THE 2015 NAAUC CONFERENCE HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND.

U

p to one in four young Australians experience a mental illness, something that rises to one in three university students. In addition, many more are often so consumed by the stresses of life at University they neglect their physical and mental wellbeing leaving them vulnerable to episodes of short term depression and anxiety. With this in mind, our aim was not only to create awareness but to promote wellbeing and ways to build resilience. As the newly formed Community Committee, Sam Johnston and Eloise Matthews were happy to undertake this challenge.

College kitchen usually adapt their food offerings to fit the ‘wellness’ theme but with our catering company, CaterCare, providing such a fresh and healthy menu each week no alterations were made to the food during our theme days.

‘Wellness Week’ spanned three days with each providing a different focus and key message.

The week started on Monday and focused on ‘Physical Wellbeing’. We headed down to the courts at the University gym for basketball and enjoyed special smoothies and fruit for supper courtesy of our ever-supportive friends from Red Frogs.

The theme for Tuesday was ‘Mental Wellbeing‘: In the morning we offered a session on relaxation through African drumming followed by a mindfulness session. In the evening we held the first Wellness Formal Dinner which was by far the most memorable and insightful feature of the week. Our speakers were students Barry Blessington and Stuart Bashford who bravely shared their experiences with mental illness as well as guest speaker, Jessica Davidson, who spoke about her work within a women’s shelter and provided us advice on how to recognise and appreciate others’ and our own mental health issues. Students walked away with much to think about.

Wednesday finished the week perfectly with ‘Stress Less Day’: Students enjoyed the Coogee to Bondi walk in the morning, and a chill out event in the courtyard that evening.

This initiative was a success, and we look forward to seeing it grow over the years. It is never easy to implement something new, but we were impressed with everyone’s response and thank all who took part.

Oslo Trip

THIS YEAR I AM STUDYING THE 3RD YEAR OF MY BACHELOR OF CHIROPRACTIC SCIENCE DEGREE AS WELL AS WORKING ON A RESEARCH PROJECT ON SPINAL STIFFNESS AS PART OF MY INDIGENOUS CADETSHIP.

F

rom my work during the internship I was offered the exciting opportunity to represent the Macquarie University Chiropractic students by presenting my research project at the European Chiropractor's Union Convention in Oslo, Norway.

Attending the conference gave me an opportunity to meet and discuss my research topic with a wide range of researchers, academics and professionals.

I was also able to attend the ECU International Student Meeting where I thoroughly enjoyed meeting other students from different Chiropractic schools to discuss current trends and initiatives as well as sharing their learning experiences. Attending this meeting was a wonderful opportunity as I was able to meet with an enthusiastic and proactive group of people, eager to contribute to the education and connection of Chiropractic students around the world.

At the conference I learnt about the importance of "building bridges" between researchers, practitioners and students as well as other healthcare professionals. Through the sessions I attended I learnt information relevant to my work as well as strategies of communication within the Chiropractic profession and the ongoing research around the world. I am very grateful to have had this exposure to the current research and ideas in the Chiropractic field especially in a global context.

I am honoured and proud to have also represented the Indigenous students at Macquarie and I hope this will also encourage others to pursue opportunities for similar experiences in their field of interest.

This is my first trip to Scandinavia. Oslo is a beautiful city and I had a great time doing a little sightseeing around the Conference.

I visited the famous Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo Opera House, the Royal Palace and the historical Akershus Fortress.

This opportunity was an invaluable learning experience and allowed me to further develop my leadership and communication skills. I came back with more confidence and eagerness to be actively involved in research and in the encouragement of my fellow classmates. I am particularly grateful for the support I received from the Department of Chiropractic Science and Walanga Muru Indigenous Office and Macquarie University.

MADELINE MORRISON, WEST HOXTON

SIBLINGS IN COLLEGE Taylor-Jai and James McAlister Living with a sibling at college has been the most annoying, incredible, character-building experience I have had to date at college. A year or so after I moved to College, my brother James moved in as well. At first, I was hesitant: brothers and sisters fight; James and I are too similar and would end up sharing the same friends and I wanted to be independent of my brother.

For the first few months, it was hell! Living at College was supposed to be a way to get AWAY from my family. My brother and I fought and didn’t really talk much. But as we grew older, and our friend groups joined, James and I began to do something we never had a chance to do before: we got to know each other as adults and learned to accept each other as individuals and not just siblings.

Peta and Chloe Larkin Having a sibling at College works out really well. I have my sister really close, but we also maintain a level of independence from each other. We have the opportunity to get involved in College events and activities that suit our different interests, which is very important to us.

Coming from rural NSW and having limited opportunities to go home throughout the semesters, living together is really convenient.

It makes it a lot easier for us to travel back and forth, and we are always there for each other as a family support system away from home.

This year has been the most amazing year for my brother and I. Not many people can say that they genuinely enjoy their sibling’s company, yet James and I spend time together almost every day – by choice and I am happy to say that he is not only my brother but also my best friend.

After just a few weeks, Dunmore Lang College definitely becomes a family of its own, but for those of us that are a long way from home sometimes having a brother or sister at College is just what you need to get through the semester. The College is big enough that you aren't living in each other’s pockets however when you're missing your family it's a short walk to find a little piece of home.

Although we still fight like siblings occasionally, it is always great to have someone living at College who always has your back.

I have been living at College for the past four years and my younger brother, Joe, has been here for three years. Having a brother at College has given me the support I needed in my final year of studying and for my brother it meant he was able to have an easier transition into university life after leaving home.

Joshua and India Charlier Having a younger sibling at College has been beneficial for both my sister India, and myself because we have had an extra layer of support for the times where studying gets tough and the motivation begins to lag behind assessment due dates.

Having spent a year constantly moving and stressing about all the disruptions to my studies I chose to live at Dunmore Lang College for the convenience and knowledge that I could focus on improving my GPA. Helping my sister come to university and College to pursue her dreams has been a rewarding experience.

Staff Out & About A C Y C L I N G TO U R O F I TA LY BEFORE ADMITTING THE PROMISE OF DELICIOUS FOOD AND GREAT WINES WAS THE MAIN SELLING POINT OF A CYCLING TRIP AROUND ITALY, I DID AT LEAST PLAN TO INCREASE MY RIDING EFFORTS PRIOR TO LEAVING SYDNEY.

P

lans of course are one thing but reality is all too often something rather different.

Adopting a student-like approach of allnight essay writing and last minute exam preparation, I tried to catch up on all the missed training rides in the final few weeks.

This plan was about to be put to the test and found to be sadly wanting.

...it was painfully clear my preparation should have been a lot better (possibly by a factor of several hundred percent).

6 DUNMORE LANG COLLEGE

Facing the first hill climb (15 km from base to summit) on day two of the trip, it was painfully clear my preparation could have been, or more accurately should have been, a lot better (possibly by a factor of several hundred percent). This became even clearer as the weather closed in and I learned how easily sunshine changes to showers, showers become belting rain, rain briefly clears before starting again and then you start pedalling into a head wind and hail. Finally, a kilometre or two from the top it snowed. Never have I been so happy to see a café nor so forgiving of truly terrible coffee.

Unfortunately, the only one proven method to build fitness is to keep going and in Italy that usually means up a hill, up and down hills or, more often as not, just up a mountain (sometimes even two or three summits for those serious cyclists aka road warriors in the lead group). Eventually, by the middle of the trip the rides were flowing much more easily and while I won’t pretend to enjoy riding up hills, they did cease to be the absolute torment they started out to be.

The food and wine were as amazing as promised but the highlight for me was the beautiful countryside and spectacular views as we rode firstly through Tuscany before travelling north for the final two weeks. From the vineyards and farms to historic towns and landmarks, everywhere we looked could have been a postcard and the slower pace of cycling meant we had even more opportunities to enjoy all the sights and smells.

Next time (and given my first week of agony this should serve as the highest recommendation to anyone thinking of a similar trip) I will be better prepared, not only in terms of cycle fitness but a deeper knowledge of the local history and much better language proficiency. There is something quite special about being able to talk with a local or even just order a coffee sans the hand waving and amateur efforts at mime.

Most importantly, I learned a lot about facing my doubts and limitations as well as the importance of getting back on the bike (both the real and metaphorical versions thereof) and especially pushing one pedal after another until you get to the next café, the next town and eventually the next hotel for a great night of food, camaraderie and relaxation.

oanne Dunwell, the Business Manager, her husband Chris, daughter Hannah and Liza Allen, the Dean of Students rose with the sun on the morning of Saturday the 25th of June. Rugged up against the cold they headed to the Central Coast to take part in the annual 5 Lands Walk.

Held around the beginning of the winter solstice, the 10 kilometer walk celebrates the coming of Spring and the arrival of the Darkinjung people’s totem animal, the humpback whale.

provided an event or display showcasing local community groups, so there were plenty of excuses for a break and a coffee along the way.

Although the walk is not a race and has no starting gun or best times, it is definitely one that puts you through your paces, covering sandy beaches, unforgiving bitumen and hills that feel a lot steeper than they look.

Our walk concluded with a delicious meal of fish and chips by the sea, which was a perfect finish to a beautiful day out and about.

A TUFF MUDDER

brisk 18 km run through mud and across a range of obstacles, Tough Mudder tests mental strength and stamina. It is a personal challenge centred around teamwork and Jamie particularly enjoyed the support and camaraderie of his team mates and other participants.

Having successfully completed his first, Jamie can’t wait to do it again next year.

Tough Mudder also raises money for charity and over ten million dollars has been donated since it began in 2010.

DURING THE MID-YEAR BREAK, STAFF AND STUDENTS JOINED AUNTY ELAINE CHAPMAN (DUNMORE LANG COLLEGE CULTURAL ADVISER) AND ELDERS FROM THE MINGALETTA COMMUNITY CENTRE TO LEARN TRADITIONAL WEAVING SKILLS.

A

rmed with coffee and morning tea, participants listened as Aunty Elaine explained the different styles and historical uses of weaving and the ways in which woven objects were used in everyday life. After watching a demonstration and bolstered by Aunty Robyn’s contrived trips to the coffee machine, participants began creating their masterpieces.

Undeterred by the speedy progress of the Aunties’ baskets, the novices eventually saw their baskets taking shape amidst much laughter and sharing of stories and experiences, not to mention the delicious lunch. Most participants have continued with their new weaving skills and collections of baskets can be seen throughout the College.

This semester, the Principal, Dr Alasdair Murrie-West, travelled to Umina on the Central Coast with a group of students to visit the Elders at the Mingaletta Community Centre.

Passing around various plants he had collected earlier in the morning, Uncle Phil explained their uses in cooking and traditional healing as well as the ways in which they mark the seasonal changes and the availability of different fish and seafood.

Next, Aunty Anita explained how she teaches the grandchildren to release the tree burls used to create coolamons and the different ways in which they are used.

After morning tea, it was time for the visiting students to gain hands-on experience in weaving and painting, creating two collective pictures which will be completed between the Elders and students during the next visit.

Many thanks to Aunty Elaine and the Elders for giving their time so generously to the College.

OpenDay 2016 U

nlike last year, Macquarie University Open Day 2016 was held during the academic Semester. As a result the College was buzzing with activity even before the first visitors arrived. We had an overwhelming response to our request for student volunteers who did a marvellous job escorting visitors and showing potential new residents around the College.

Along with the kitchen’s irresistible delicacies, Liza and Alasdair chatting with or interviewing interested future University students all day – we were in Open Day business!

The winter weather was extremely kind to us, thankfully, as our secret weapon on the day (besides excellent accommodation and amenities, food, staff & community) was a free Gelato Bar containing seven deliciously tempting flavours!

Open Day was successful in showcasing not only the great facilities Dunmore Lang College has to offer, but also the passion our residents have for their home. Visitors left with a positive impression with many expressing their eagerness for 2017 Applications to open and several completing their selection interview with the Principal or Dean of Students on the day.

C

areer Expos provide an opportunity for staff of the College to engage with many year 11 and 12 students who are considering attending Macquarie University and to provide information on University life and the benefits of living in a Residential College.

They were assisted by current College students with this year’s team including Jenna Barker, Rhiannon Beattie and Sarah Croake. These students share their personal stories and talked about their experiences living at Dunmore Lang College providing a real life account of the benefits of community living.

Once again, our famous lolly helpers, John and Dorothy travelled with us bringing smiles to visitors in every town. Of course, it’s not all work and no play for these intrepid travellers. After a hard day at the Career Markets they still find time to squeeze in some sightseeing and always end the day with a nice meal.

We are looking forward to seeing many of the students we spoke to around New South Wales arriving in College for 2017!

T

he students were out in their finery, the dining room was dressed befitting the occasion, the Valedictorians and Graduands were excited, and the tantalising aroma of beautiful food wafted in and around the College.

To add to the occasion we welcomed many special guests to the College including Board members, Donors, the Elders who came especially from the Central Coast, staff of Macquarie University, College staff and partners and friends of the College. This year we had the biggest Valedictory Dinner in the College’s history with a total of 280 people at the event.

Other highlights of the evening included the announcement of the 2017 ADS Executive and recognition of 2016 student leaders.

The night’s entertainment was provided by Nidala Barker on piano, singing with Kayla Atkins Say Something. Their haunting rendition was particularly meaningful to many of our Valedictorians as this is the song they sang at the Commencement Dinner three years before for the same group of students. Phillip Leason followed on piano, with a superb performance of Overs.

The evening concluded with drinks in Dorothy Knox House for invited guests, Valedictorians, Graduands and the outgoing and incoming student leaders.

N AT I O N A L S T U D E N T LEADERSHIP FORUM A Personal Reflection

T

he National Student Leadership Forum is a youth conference held in Canberra each year and brings current and future leaders together to openly discuss faith and values and how these form and inform their leadership.

Every year the College sponsors a small number of students to attend the Forum and this year three senior students were selected, Aimee Woods (RA), Tim Porter (Senior Duty) and Brayden Jones (Senior RA).

On arriving at the Forum we were randomly assigned to a 'small group' with seven other people with whom we spent the majority of the conference. The scheduled speakers were all excellent and we heard from some very successful people and numerous politicians. One of the most unexpected outcomes from the conference was that we didn't actually take much away from any of the politicians or keynote speakers but rather found much more inspiring leadership within our small groups, and it was here that we all learned the most about ourselves.

Faith and values are two essential elements to a person’s identity as an individual; shaping the person you are and your journey in life. It is safe to say that everybody who went to the Forum had different experiences as it is a very personal process and engagement.

It was apparent to us that those who shared the most about themselves at the Forum (especially within their small groups), took the most away from it. For us, it wasn't about improving our leadership skills or becoming a better leader (even though we went into it expecting this to be the case), but rather a time to explore and ask ourselves questions such as "Who am I?", "What makes me who I am?", "Why do I do what I do?" and "What do I believe in?". Through this process we gained a better understanding of our personal identities, in particular who we are, what we value and what we believe in. This process has given us true confidence and strength to go out into the world and change the trajectory of our lives, and perhaps more meaningfully, the trajectory of the lives of the people around us.

It cannot be put it into words how valuable going to the Forum was for us except to say that it has changed our lives.

S P OT L I G H T O N P H D S T U D E N T S Mehrdokht Pournader IRAN

What is your research topic?

My topic is ‘Identification and Mitigation of Risks in Interconnected Firms‘. In other words it is a study of supply chain risk management.

Where did you study your undergraduate degree?

I began my studies at the Iran University of Science and Technology. I completed a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Iran before having this opportunity to come to Australia.

Zac Thomas WANNIASSA, ACT 2015-2016

You are an ancient history scholar. What is your research topic?

My research looks at the formative period of the monarchy in ancient Israel, the time of David and Solomon (circa 1000-900 BC) and how this period can be better understood through the native social context of the Ancient Near East.

Where did you study your undergraduate degree?

What is your research topic?

Open Access Repositories (OARs): Designing an Appropriate Regulatory Framework by balancing copyright owners' and end-users' interests.

Can you explain the connection between open access and copyright?

Copyright is about the protection of expression and open access can be seen as an instrument to disseminate copyrighted works. It follows that my thesis' argument is about the accessibility and restrictions that can be waived under the open access practice.

Why is it so difficult to protect?

Now that we are living in the digital age, the dissemination of information happens very easily through the internet, smartphones and various social networks, therefore issues of copyright protection emerge. So, on the one 12 DUNMORE LANG COLLEGE

Why is this area of research important?

Risk management in corporations, especially international firms, must be a top priority for business. Managing risk better leads notionally to substantial cost savings (which are always welcome) but is also an important factor in developing business resilience, especially in global markets.

What do you see as your career path after you complete your PhD?

At this stage I am undecided but I am considering two alternatives at present, one is to remain in academia and continue my research and the other is to follow a management consulting path.

Why is this important?

Most archaeologists and historians who deal with ancient Israel tend to import sociological assumptions from the modern world into their analysis of ancient civilisations, so my PhD will provide an example of how understanding the ancient social context can correct not only misunderstandings but shed new light on the ancient society and history in the Near East.

What do you see as a practical application of your research?

Hopefully my thesis can serve as a model and example for future archaeological research into the history of ancient Israel and the Near East that appreciates and fully engages with the importance of the social contexts of the time.

What do you see as your career path after you complete your PhD?

Macquarie Graduate School of Management is one of the leading business schools in Australia and the world. I was very eager to start my PhD here and I was offered a generous scholarship. Since I have been at MGSM, I have had the privilege of working on several research projects with outstanding scholars.

Can you tell me about your Dunmore Lang College experience?

Dunmore Lang College has provided me with a really supportive and nurturing environment for me and my peers to both work hard and enjoy our stay for the duration of our studies.

What has been the most challenging part of your research experience to date?

Researching in this area means tackling a huge amount of historical data and secondary scholarship, so the main challenge is trying to sift through it all selectively and presenting an argument that is fully supported but also new and innovative.

What has brought you to Macquarie University?

I came here after studying in the UK because Macquarie had hired my supervisor, the only person in Australia who could supervise my particular PhD.

What are some interesting experiences you have had at Macquarie University?y?

As an archaeologist it’s important for me to be able to excavate in Israel itself. Since coming to Macquarie I have had several opportunities to do this which has really helped my research.

Nothing can compare to digging in the land of the Bible.

I’ll probably look to secure a postdoctoral research position followed by an academic post, probably in the United States.

hand technological growth is providing a level of access we have not had before and which is beneficial to all users, however at the same time this accessibility to information means there should also be a new framework of protection for authors.

Why is this important?

There should be a legal framework to protect intellectual property on digital media in Australia. My research considers the importance of international agreements for intellectual property protection such as the TRIPS Agreement and WIPO Convention to which Australia is a signatory. One of my thesis' chapter focuses on the current copyright regime of Australia and possible reforms towards a better system of protection.

Have you been able to arrive at any conclusions as to what recommendations you would make to protect this type of copyright?

I think better agreements among copyright holders, consumers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are needed. I am thinking

of a public copyright licence, or ‘creative common’ which would enable the free dissemination of a copyrighted work.

What do you see as your career path after you complete your PhD? My ideal is to be an academic in the Macquarie University Law School.

What have been your best experiences at Macquarie University?

I have been awarded two research grants that constituted a substantial part of my PhD thesis and have been very fortunate to also receive the appropriate financial support to allow me to participate in international and interdisciplinary conferences in South Korea (2014), South Africa (2015), Perth (2016) and Greece (2016). At these conferences I presented papers on open access repositories, their growth and potential. I have also been able to live at Dunmore Lang which has provided me with the perfect place to live whilst studying at Macquarie University.

2016 NAAUC EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE COLLEGE HOSTED THE 2016 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY COLLEGES (NAAUC) CONFERENCE IN CONJUNCTION WITH ROBERT MENZIES COLLEGE.

T

he NAAUC conference provides an environment in which members from a diverse group of Colleges and Halls can share experiences and make connections. It provides an opportunity for delegates to learn new skills and inspires them to develop new initiatives upon their return to their respective residences. Most importantly, the leadership team not only provides advice on everyday college proceedings, but encourages dialogue on interesting and progressive ideas.

College students from every state and territory arrived at our doorstep to enjoy a week of challenges, inspiration, information, camaraderie and overall good times. Jenna Lindbeck, Hope Lawry, Ben Reinhard and Jake Meincke were Dunmore Lang College representatives this year. I was lucky enough to be on the leadership team alongside present and past College students from across Australia, all with a wealth of collective college experiences. This year’s conference Leadership Team also included two past Dunmore Lang College residents: the Dunmore Lang College 2014 ADS President, Drew Nguyen who was the Director as well as Megan McMurdo who was the 2014 ADS Social Vice President.

Each morning delegates participated in a mixture of activities around Sydney as well as seminars and information sessions on a wide range of topics. These included graduate employment, gender equity, spirituality in modern residences, environmental sustainability, maintaining wellness, building College spirit and culture, negotiating social media, planning student events and dealing with drugs and alcohol. Information sessions also covered the practical skills needed to be an effective Student Club leader and Residential Adviser. The topics were insightful, with Colleges from all over Australia sharing advice and insights from their own experiences.

At the end of each day social events were provided to showcase examples of different types of events that can be implemented by student leaders back in their own Colleges.

These included an International themed dinner, Christmas in July, a trivia night and a stand-up comedy evening. In between the hard work, social events included a boat cruise on Sydney Harbour, a merchandise swap, a charity auction for the Red Frogs and even a cultural night in the Dunmore Lang College courtyard which included Bollywood dancers and ended with the NAAUC ball.

Feedback from delegates confirmed the week was a massive success. Delegates left inspired and ready to make a difference in their residential communities (they also couldn’t stop telling me how much better our food was compared to theirs).

On top of the World

A

s the 2016 Ball Committee, Bridget and I had the fun and challenging task of organising College’s Annual Ball for 2016.

Months of planning culminated in one of the best nights of the year, it was a night not to be missed!

On the 5th of August, 150 Dunmore Lang College students flocked to the courtyard in their heels and gowns, suits and ties to enjoy some champagne whilst the College photographer took photos. After pre-dinner drinks and canapes as well as the College

group photo we then boarded the buses and headed to a secret location in the city.

Guests were overjoyed to discover we were spending the formal part of the night at Centre Point Tower surrounded by amazing views. Looking out across the night view of Sydney city from the city’s highest structure at 309m was very special. It was a lovely clear evening and all the lights of the city buildings sparkled as did the harbour, bridge and beyond. This beautiful venue was the perfect site for the delicious meal, countless photos and award presentations.

After a wonderful event, attendees with the energy made their way to Ivy where the good times continued on the dance floor.

Everyone has their own special memories of the Ball but all can agree that they wished it never ended! The night was well worth all the stress involved with choosing the perfect venues, the photographer, menu and music and we are sure the next Ball Committee will continue to impress in 2017!

A DUMPLING DINNER

T

he making and sharing of dumplings is a tradition that families share in China at New Year. Last year our Dean introduced this tradition to our Resident Adviser team as a team bonding experience. Recently members of the 2016 team have once again enjoyed making dumplings together.

With our returning Resident Advisers teaching the new team members the technique of wrapping the little pastries it was not long before they were all prepared, cooked and finding their way to our plates along with some interesting Chinese appetisers Liza had prepared beforehand.

I

t was a beautiful day, with a nice breeze to help the runners down the back straight and up the new addition of a slight incline before the home stretch to really show who was number one.

The day commenced with the individual races with a clear win by a huge margin in the female race by Hannah Dodd, the bar was set for the rest of Dunmore Lang to follow suit.

Jack Goode stepped up for the men’s race.

Almost falling at the start with a slide on the slippery grass, he worked his way back to the front throughout the course with an amazing run and another win for the College.

The relays are always the most exciting races of the day and with a big audience from all across the University watching on, our girls took to the starting line. Emma Harvey took a solid lead at the start which was maintained by Georgia Winn. At one stage Robert Menzies College looked to be fighting back and closed the gap but Claudia Conran held on to our lead. Tayla Kenneally put in the hard yards on the last leg to snatch another win.

With the success of the girls, the boys looked to be feeling the pressure! Tom Woodhouse was out of the blocks first taking an early lead.

Sam Zerafa took the baton for the second leg, giving it everything he had to pass it on to Max Knight, who extended our lead even further.

Tim Porter bought it home strongly with the fastest lap of the day and secured the win for the boys.

Dunmore Lang College has won two years in a row for an all-round win. Let’s hope we can do it again for the hat-trick in 2017!

THE 2016 SPORTING SEASON KICKED OFF WITH VOLLEYBALL WITH NARROW LOSSES TO BOTH THE WOMEN’S AND MEN’S TEAMS

T

his proved to be a temporary setback with the men and the women water polo teams showing off their pool skills to secure wins in both games. The women were dominant in the early minutes of the game, sitting on a 4-0 lead by half time, and finishing the game strong with a convincing 7-0 victory. The men’s game was a nail bitter, with Dunmore Lang College finally claiming the win in the dying seconds of the match with a half way shot.

The next three events of netball, soccer and basketball made it evident that tension and rivalry was growing between the ‘Red Army’ and Robert Menzies both on the fields and courts and in the enthusiastic support from each College.

The North Ryde Fun Run combines both a Fun Run and fundraiser for Youth Mental Health with Inter-College Sports points for the top three men and women finishers. It was not only a fantastic event but on top of the Courtyard Challenge results put Dunmore Lang College comfortably in the lead.

The next event was Dodge Ball. The Macquarie University Village men’s team arrived with what looked to be an experienced player in their team but Dunmore Lang men came out firing, showing off their mad diving and ducking skills to win the game. However, this initial success was short-lived, as we weren’t as lucky against Robert Menzies College. The girls also gave it a red-hot go with some impeccable precision but our dodging skills were not as great, and Robert Menzies won the day.

Finally, it was the highly anticipated rugby/ touch football games. With the Village being a no-show, the day was kicked off with the women’s game of touch. Unfortunately, they were unable to finish with a win, but managed to score 2 runaway tries, which is a win in itself.

The last event saw the men tough it out in an intense game of rugby against Menzies.

Tensions were running high both on and off the field, and the boys managed to pull through with a convincing win.

The overall score revealed that Dunmore Lang College were the champions, winning the Intercollege Sporting Shield for the 5th year in a row!

arlier this year engineering students welcomed Professor Iain Collings, Head of the School of Engineering to the College.

Professor Collings explained his professional journey from working at CSIRO to his academic position highlighting to students the various options and career possibilities they might consider in their professional career.

Media students hosted Board member Ms Gillian Cannon, reporter with Channel 9 and her husband Chris Bowen, Programme Reporter at 2GB who drew on their extensive experience of working in television and radio to explain the ins and outs of a working life in media.

IT students dined with Mr Andrew Sjoquist, CEO of ASE IT, the College’s IT provider and Mr Nicholas Bentley an employee of the company.

Nicholas explained his transition from intern to full time employee and Andrew shared insights on managing and developing a new IT business.

Mr Charlie Frew Managing Director of CodeClean Australia Pty Ltd joined the business students to discuss the dynamics of business and gave them insights into marketing, product development and enhancing customer service.

M

ost jobs are straight forward, corporate events, headshots and portraits, the odd product shoot, magazine work and a few weddings.

So imagine my surprise when I was invited to take personalised portraits of the Dunmore Lang staff. When the brief arrived of what the subjects wanted I laughed out loud and my mind raced on how to get the hero shots.

A good result seldom just happens, you must be sure. That takes planning and to see an end result in your mind before you start. They say never work with children or animals, well I am pleased to say that the Dunmore Lang College staff were great. It makes a big difference to the result if they go along for the ride. All aboard, here we go.

The weather was on, blue sky, bonus. First stop the netball court. Adrenalin can do great things when it kicks in. To get a good image I pictured me being the netball hoop with Nicole, ball in hand, taking a shot.

This would give me the court as a background and have Nicole’s face looking up. The only trouble was ol’ fatty here had to climb the support scaffold. So up I went. The shot was worth it, Nicole looks great. An alternative shot was to have blue sky. For this I pictured a more hip hop swagger with Nicole pointing to camera, the colours look great.

Next stop, the field and Joanne the champion runner. As Joanne has competed in so many running events it was natural for her to have a run-by shot. I wanted a motion blur in the background so had to pan the camera as Jo came past. The champ had to make a dozen passes before I got the shot with arms in the air crossing our imaginary finish line.

Buzy bee Jamie with his can of smoke, what can I say. When Jamie smiles at you, you want to smile back. The big maple tree in the court yard was the venue for our bee man shot. I needed an elevated position to get the nice wall in the background. So Jamie had to be elevated too, so with a great balancing act our smiling hero climbed up on top of two milk crates. The props were a few bright yellow bees and one pink one that was flying off to party.

Well who loves the colour pink then? Maybe Grace would have preferred to be in a tropical swimming pool with the big flamingo sipping on a pina colada, but Dunmore Lang College

is a good second choice. The elevated shot gave me a chance to see all of the pink props on our makeshift desk. We needed to see Grace’s pink jeans as well, so with a calculator and coffee in hand it was just another day in the office. Well done.

I remember going to a party once and asked a lady “What do you do?” The standard reply came about her job. “No, that’s not what I meant, I mean what do you do for fun or a hobby, do you paint or sing or dance?”.

I was reminded of that when I met Carolyn, the games lady. The props were a half dozen board games. Gamers can spend a kazillion hours online playing people around the world in shoot’em ups etc. Ok, but for a real test of mind power, strategy and patience, try playing chess.

came and I knew it was a winner. Games are to be enjoyed. To make the shot work I blew out the white background and using pink scrabble letters adding Carolyn’s favourite expression, “Bring it on!”

background would work best. I knew that a flash was needed to freeze the action. I knew that the paint should be thrown from four points, two behind and two at the side. But would it work?

Talking of patience, any volunteers to cut out hundreds of dots? When I was told that Liza wanted lots of dots, the first thing that came to mind was throwing them into the air. So with the threat of RSI Liza made her multi sized, multi coloured bundle of joy. Again I used a white background and had Liza practice the throw position. Excellent, 1, 2, 3, throw... Now pick them all up again for another go! Helpers came from everywhere and on inspection I realized that Liza got it in one, bingo!

Ok, so far so good. Then in comes the good Dr of Theology, a prayer at this point would not go astray.

Now for the hard one... Dr Alasdair. Knowing that Alasdair wanted paint thrown at him met with some real challenges. I knew that a white

My mistake was in not getting the paint thickness right. Water flies out of the tub but thick paint is a whole different equation.

“Right’o here we go, 1, 2, 3”… with camera on motor drive I had the first shot come in hard and fast at poor Alasdair’s head while another two throws were still on their way in. One throw went so high that I am expecting it to land next Wednesday. Now covered in paint and with bated breath everyone turns to me...

No, we have to go again, arrrgh.

Being the good sport that he is, Alasdair, on a cold winter's night, put his head under the hose brbrbrbr. Smiling, yes smiling, he said that as a Kiwi, being cold and wet was a part of life.

No wonder they win the rugby.

Another shot was lined up and, hurray, a good shot to work with.

I have since been informed that the paint shot will have a rerun with a daytime shoot and students throwing the paint... any takers?

LGBTIQ DINNER DUNMORE LANG COLLEGE HOSTS THE HON. MICHAEL KIRBY AC CMG AT THE INAUGURAL LGBTIQ+ DINNER

R

etired High Court Judge Mr Michael Kirby, a strong advocate for the LGBTIQ+ communities, launched the first University Residential College LGBTIQ+ mentor group at Dunmore Lang College at the inaugural LGBTIQ+ dinner on Wednesday the 7th of September.

LGBTIQ+ students at the College established the first open and supported LGBTIQ+ mentor group at a University Residential College in Australia earlier this year.

The dinner held in the College dining hall was attended by over 200 members of the College community, University staff, guests and College staff.

‘’Organising this occasion is important. It is the first such event organised by any Australian university Residential College to welcome and affirm the presence of gays and other sexual minorities. When I was at University, there was no such affirmation. Only hostility and discrimination. In some Australian educational institutions, especially religious schools, there is violence and enforced silence about profoundly important subjects.

The College is home to 270 students most of whom come from rural and regional NSW and around Australia with just over 11% of current students openly identifying as LGBTIQ.

So I thank the students at Dunmore Lang College. Especially I want to thank the mentors who have got this project off the ground. Many students at the College come from remote, regional and rural Australia. In those parts of our country it is still sometimes dangerous to be open on these subjects. A University College may be the very first place where a student has been able to be honest and true to himself or herself.

The mentor group has been set up as a peer support network for LGBTIQ+ students living in the College as well as acting as an information resource for students and friends.

I congratulate the Principal and the students for affirming the essential dignity of everybody in residence. This is how it should be in a University dedicated to scientific truth. But it has taken a long time for Australian universities to get to this point. And some still have a way to travel.’’

LGBTIQ+ mentor group member and Dunmore Lang College Student President, Mr Ben Saunders introduced the guest speaker Mr Kirby. On the significance of having Mr Kirby launch the mentor group and speak at the dinner he commented: “The committee we have established at Dunmore Lang College stands by its three main objectives: support, advocacy and acceptance.

The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG has embodied these values for longer than almost anyone else at the forefront of LGBTIQ+ human rights lobbying. The LGBTIQ+ community has much to thank Mr Kirby for, and this was once again made apparent when he gave an inspired speech at the College.”

Mr Kirby spoke to the students at length and followed his talk with a Q and A session. He received rousing applause and a standing ovation.

Rural LGBTIQ+ youth are known to experience higher rates of exclusion, isolation and even abuse resulting in higher rates of depression, anxiety and self-harm: “Around 61 per cent of same-sex attracted and gender-questioning young people said they experienced verbal abuse because

of their sexuality, while 18 per cent reported experiencing physical abuse”.

In situations where affirmative and protective policies are in place LGBTIQ+ students are more likely (75 per cent compared with 45 per cent) to report feeling safe, happier and accepted in ways that support positive health and education outcomes.

‘In the course of his remarks, Michael Kirby congratulated Dunmore Lang College. He said:

“Dunmore Lang College is committed to providing a safe and accepting community for all students while they are studying at Macquarie University, especially rural students coming from marginalised or excluded communities. This dinner celebrated an important step forward in ensuring our students not only achieve their best but go on to become Australian and global leaders.”

A SOJOURN IN INDIA

IN SEMESTER 1 OF 2016 I VENTURED TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF BANGALORE, IN THE SOUTH OF INDIA, TO UNDERTAKE A STUDENT EXCHANGE WITH THE NATIONAL LAW SCHOOL OF INDIA UNIVERSITY. AS THE FIRST STUDENT FROM MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY TO ATTEND THE INSTITUTION, I WAS UNSURE WHAT TO EXPECT.

f you want a holiday, go to Fiji but if you want to be transformed, go to India. It quickly occurred to me that you don’t go to India, you experience it. Scribble the words “swim with the tide” on your brain and on your hand too if you must!

turned me into the worst kind of critic. At times I found myself comparing India, and all its problems, to Australia. I was frustrated by the lack of solutions, especially as I could see India had so much potential. However, before long my frustrations transformed into fascinations.

Tired, hungry and fresh off my flight from Australia, I arrived in Bangalore on the requested date. I made my way through the lawless traffic and colourful litter stained streets to the university – which was closed due to a public holiday (Administrative error perhaps?). After pleading with a lady in a blue sari that I had nowhere else to go, she led me to the Yamuna dorm. There I found a dusty room with two single mattress-less beds, no power and a squat dunny down the hall.

Lots of long weekends meant I was fortunate enough to travel to many places, including the famous Taj Mahal.

Traveling, I came to understand was what the brochures meant when they claimed India to be the most chaotic, engaging, colourful, spiritual and life-affirming of places. I found myself full of amazement at the diversity of its cultural riches, from temples to its brightly coloured dress code.

The next couple of days the rooms around me filled up with returning students – who thankfully showed me where to buy the necessities and how to fight off the monkeys knocking at the door. I followed my neighbours and new friends to my first class, which was cancelled along with the second and third.

After a few weeks I figured out how to enrol and that the teachers took more days off than the students. Three weeks in I received an email about an orientation – all part of the Indian experience right?

My first impression of India and how it operated (or didn’t), left me frustrated and

My amazement continued into the classroom. From discussing Ancient Hindu Law with former Chief Justice Rama Jois, to brainstorming ideas for how to combat corruption with politician and author Prof Rajeev Gowda, my experience in the Indian classroom was always an interactive one.

In a country of over a billion people, there is much that is shocking to the foreign eye, from the poverty, pollution, overladen vehicles to the one-punch mosquitos that can put you in hospital (as I found out).

India is by no means a glamorous place, but this doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful. A student exchange in India is an assault on the senses – all of them, and nearly all of the time.

ecently, staff member Carolyn McKenzie mentioned to her mother-in law that she had taken up a new role at Dunmore Lang College. She was very surprised to be told that in front of her were two pieces of antique furniture that had previously belonged to Presbyterian Minister John Dunmore Lang after whom the College is named. Carolyn’s mother-in-law has kindly written a short description of how she and her late husband acquired the pieces.

he Dean of Students has been planning to lay some turf in the courtyard to her apartment for some time and with an upcoming visit from family over the Christmas break including her daughter who is bringing her two dogs, work has recently been brought forward.

Over the last few weeks Jamie Twyman, our Maintenance Coordinator, ably assisted by Kathryn Bowler removed a large section of pavers and have laid turf to transform the courtyard area.

fter much discussion, nothing seemed more fitting than the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show – it would be sure to appeal to the Dunmore Lang audiences and so the 2016 Musical, The O-Week Horror Picture Show was chosen.

n the day, students headed over to Piccolo Me in search of the perfect macchiato or single origin soy flat white as well as smoothies and hot chocolates. Piccolo Me donated $1 for every cup of coffee sold on the day and Dunmore Lang students raised an additional $250 with the Principal, Dr Alasdair Murrie-West donating $5 for every photo of students at the café posted on the College Facebook page.

As Alasdair posted to students on Facebook the next day: “Huge thanks to all the students who posted photos on Facebook of their coffee purchases to raise money for CEH and their research into mental health and young people. As promised, I have donated $5 per photo (47) rounded up to a total of $250.

Really proud to be part of a community that puts their coffee where their hearts are – thanks for participating and supporting a great cause. Cheers, Alasdair” After two successful years, this is clearly destined to become an annual event.

SENIOR STUDENTS

Hunter Valley Wine Tour

ON FRIDAY 14 OCTOBER THE SENIOR STUDENT PROGRAM MADE ITS WAY TO THE ROLLING HILLS OF THE HUNTER FOR A DAY OF SIPPING, TASTING AND ENJOYING THE PLETHORA OF WINES THAT THE VALLEY HAS TO OFFER.

he morning began (begrudgingly for those who like their 17 hours of sleep) at 7:15am sharp, or at least on a scale of sharpness from the early-rising postgraduates to the lessso-sprightly Danielle. Soon enough we had embarked, and for those of us who remained awake, we were delighted by the beautiful scenery of the hinterland before arriving at our first winery of the day.

To start the day, the friendly faces at Macquarie Dale greeted us with their finest selection of all-natural, preservative free fermentations in hand. Soon, it became clear that the office staff had handed over their savings to Nicole, to bring back the joys of the tour and those of us who followed suit did so with the unfamiliarity of purchasing a lovely drop from a real glass bottle.

After Keith Tulloch and Mistletoe, the Two Fat Men invited us to try an extensive platter of the Hunter's most carefully made sandwiches, while the seagulls begged for more chips.

Next up, Oakvale showed off its impressive set-up as anticipation built for the pièce de résistance at the Hunter Distillery.

Finally to complete the day we enjoyed an energetic and enthusiastic spirit tasting at the Hunter Distillery while staff explained both the process of distilling as well as the challenge of creating new flavours and small business marketing. Despite a greater selection of gin, vodka and liqueurs than we had ever seen before, flaming-hot chilli vodka was not enough to keep the whole tour awake however, and a few quickly found themselves oblivious to the wild cheers on the bus ride home (congrats on leading the team Kayla).

She was awarded the Dunmore Lang College Indigenous Incentive Scholarship as well as the Macquarie University Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarship, allowing her to relocate from Darwin to Sydney to continue her tertiary studies. Leaving her family and home, Katena was supported by Warawara (now Walanga Muru, Macquarie’s Office of Indigenous Strategy) and credits her decision to attend Macquarie to the staff there.

“When I arrived, I only thought I’d stay for six months, just to try it out; I had no friends or family here, so I wasn’t sure I’d want to stay. But almost immediately, I met so many great people and through Walanga Muru I had a family away from home, so it was easy for me to stay,” Katena says.

A MODEL OF INDIGENOUS SUCCESS

acquarie recently launched its 10-year Indigenous Strategy, and one of last week’s graduates is a model example of what the strategy aims to achieve. Here we share Katena Valastro’s journey from enrolment to graduation to her current role with Walanga Muru.

Last week Katena Valastro graduated from Macquarie with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Arts Practice Management and International Business, minoring in Dance and Performance and Human Resources.

Katena was born on Larrakai Land (Darwin, Northern Territory). After graduating from Darwin High School, she applied through UAC for a place at Macquarie and was accepted into her double degree

Katena’s tertiary journey aligns strongly with the Indigenous Strategy Green Paper 2015 and the newly released Indigenous Strategy 2016 – 2025.

Accommodation, access to international study, the Macquarie University Cadetship Program and ITAS tutoring were just a few of the opportunities offered to Katena throughout her tertiary study.

The Indigenous Strategy aims to provide this level of access and participation to a greater number of Indigenous students who may otherwise not have the opportunity to enrol in tertiary education and complete their degree programs.

These strategies aim to engage with Indigenous students through the provision of culturally safe mentoring, cadetship opportunities, ITAS tutoring and increased availability of employment within Macquarie.

Katena is a highly successful example of these aims. She is now a Project Administrator within Walanga Muru and remains Senior Duty at Dunmore Lang College.

“I didn’t know what my next step was going to be when I finished, and Walanga Muru was a big part of my life while I was studying, so it feels great to be giving back to it,” Katena says.

Naidoc Week at College O ur Head Chef, Nicole, herself a Warwidjada woman, prepared a beautiful Indigenous meal for the College this year to mark Naidoc week.

Nicole brought items from her home including beautiful art pieces hand-painted by Nicole as well as other artefacts to decorate the Dining Hall servery.

The meal included dishes delicately flavoured with Indigenous flavours and spices. The College community thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully prepared and presented meal.
