OFF THE SHELF With the warmer months drawing to a close and the blanket of cold descending upon our valley we at Top Shelf have decided it’s time to bring you all in by the fire and dose you up on the finest acoustic acts we can get our frozen extremities on. Over the coming months we will break up the mix by asking bands to leave their amps at home and deliver their tunes in a stripped back nature thus providing us with a more intimate look at the music. We look forward to seeing you at Irish Murphy’s, sitting by the fire sipping port.

The acoustic shows wont take hold just yet as we have two more nights of kicking bands lined up to send off summer (well autumn anyway). First up is The Tokyo Room from Hobart who will make their Top Shelf debut Wed April 29. I can’t say I know a lot about these guys but on hearing them via their MySpace (www.myspace.com/thetokyoroom) I am sure they will deliver some memorable tunes. Mark Edmunds

will be opening the show, which in essence is a tease of what’s to come two weeks later. That’s right, Foreign Films will be returning to the Top Shelf stage Wed May 13. Foreign Films have established themselves as a fine Launceston act whose loyal fan base is expanding rapidly and no wonder, with a set full of catchy hooks and great songs these guys have you singing for days.

Wed May 6 will see the first Top Shelf unplugged night and to kick it off we have Jason Lucas from My Escapade and performing together, Carl Fidler and Glenn Moorhouse. As members of Black Japan, The Dog Line, Mayfield and of course The Dead Abigails they have plenty of material to draw from. Jason Lucas’ last Top Shelf performance a few weeks ago brought high praise from touring act, Me, and highlighted his incredible voice and strong song writing. This evening promises to be the perfect night in whilst being the perfect night out.

We are also pleased to announce that Rob Sawyer will be playing Top Shelf on Wed May 27 with Casper and The Ghosts (featuring Mick Attard) supporting. It’s been a while since Rob last played in Launceston and you never know when he’ll be back again so don’t miss this chance to catch him.

On Saturday, the 2nd of May, supporting Little Red are an amazing new band called The Protectors, from Newcastle, that fertile music breeding ground that spawned Silverchair, amongst others. If you like indie music, you should get along. Local rising stars, LaVista will be supporting, too. The Protectors are currently supporting Eagles of Death Metal on their tour around the mainland. Abbey Doggett has been described as Tasmania’s answer to Michelle Shocked and has carved an acoustic niche for herself in the local scene.

Finally, Kiss Whisky will also be on hand to play some Rootsy tunes with a bit of a Jose Gonzalez feel.

Making Us Happy

Familiar to most of us with his hit songs like ‘Middle of the Hill’ and ‘Lines on Palms’ featured on his ARIA award winning debut LP, Memories & Dust, Josh Pyke has experienced a steady stream of success since 2005.

Now with a second hit album in his back pocket, Pyke is keeping the Chimney’s Afire by sailing to Tasmania on the next leg of his current regional tour (possibly by guitar boat). Recently back from a whirlwind overseas trip, he is looking forward to sharing his new album in a live setting with Tasmanians, and we’re almost confident he’s not just using it as a good excuse to play some great golf…

OK, so he won’t be arriving via guitar boat, as the Maton guitar styled boat featured in the ‘Make You Happy’ clip recently sold at auction. It was one of those clever gimmicks that Pyke hoped would boost awareness for the music video, and in turn the music.

Pyke was even sent clippings from international media countries in places like China and Dubai. “I had hoped that the internet viral capacity for that clip would spread it around, but I didn’t expect it to go as far as it did… it was a strategy in a sense that we made a film clip and put it on the internet, but beyond that you can’t really strategise the internet, that’s the whole thing about it – it’s an unmoderated medium.” Which, as Pyke says, can offer both good (such as immediacy of sharing content) and bad things to the music industry.

The video clip reflects the slight maritime theme of the new record, with song titles such as ‘When Two Oceans Meet’ and ‘The Lighthouse Song.’ The title of the album (and opening track), Chimney’s Afire, actually comes from an old whaling term (some of Pyke’s ancestors were whalers). It’s a term the whalers would call out when they speared a whale, when the “blowhole would be spewing out water and blood mixed together,

and they’d call that ‘the chimney is afire.’ It’s brutal imagery, but I think the language was a beautiful way of describing something really brutal and I liked that juxtaposition.” Pyke is also quick to point out that he in no way condones whaling…

The title was clearly a favourite, with the tour also being named after the album. “I’m actually going to change my name to Chimney’s Afire, first name Chimney, last name Afire, ‘cause I’ve got to use it more” he laughs.

The tour itself comes after a major Australian city tour, a short trip to the U.S. and U.K. (including attending the South by Southwest Festival in Texas). For the tour he will be supported by Sydney band The Jezabels who will be providing “hopefully a bit of musical support, but predominantly emotional support.” All jokes aside, Pyke assures us that he “can definitely vouch for these guys, they’re really good…I chose them based on their music which I though was very good.”

Pyke has been looking forward to heading down to Tasmania, and will even be staying an extra day to experience one of the best golf courses in Australia, Barnbougle. “I’m even probably one of Australia’s worst golf players, but it’s just a beautiful place…You guys have got shit loads of stuff that’s better than the rest of Australia.” Clearly a very intelligent man, Pyke took up golf about a year ago as an activity to wind down and get some exercise while on tour, which he’s been doing since the album was released.

“As soon as you release the album it’s like you put any other aspect of your life on hold and hit the road for the next two years…and it will keep on rolling on like that for the next few months I’d say.” Luckily for us, this will mean we’ll be able to catch two great shows during May, before Pyke heads to the ‘Dunes for a short break and continues on his way. Don’t Stop The Beat

With over ten mixes coming out in the next few moths, it’s safe to say that Brisbane based DJ Nick Galea is one busy boy. With collaborations and releases on Onelove and Ministry of Sound, as well as charting high on the ARIA club charts and the inthemix50 DJ poll, Nick is also carving out an impressive spot for himself in the Australian Dance Industry.

What did you get up to this Week/Weekend, professionally and personally?

This week has been a really busy one. I’ve been in Sydney all week working on music with Mark Dynamix.

I played in Sydney on Wednesday night at Epping, and then on Friday night I’m playing at Soho in Kings Cross. After that, I’m back too Queensland where I’m playing at Tomba’s nightclub at Toowoomba on Saturday night. During all of this I’ve met up with Onelove to talk music, so it’s all been happening.

How has life changed for you, professionally, since the success of your remix for Kaz James’ ‘Breathe,’ which was #1 on the ARIA club chart for six weeks?

Nothing has changed really; I’m still as busy as ever! DJing, producing, and remixing every waking moment; then getting ready for the tunes to come out - it never really ends. Of course, that’s good thing though.

How has it affected you, on a more personal level?

My life is very busy. I’ve got to be careful that I don’t burn myself out. Too many late nights are not good for the old body!

And how did your friends and family react when the results came out?

Everyone was very happy because they knew that I worked, and will continue to work, very hard in order

You’re a Onelove producer, but your upcoming single, ‘You’re Mine’ was recently featured on the Ministry of Sound: Electro House Sessions 2 compilation. What has it meant for you, to have a foot in both camps, professionally speaking?

Both Onelove and Ministry of Sound are wellrespected labels and I think it is a great achievement.

But contractually, I’m a Onelove artist now and due to that you will see an abundance of singles coming out starting in a matter of weeks.

How hard is it, on your personal life, to devote the amount of time needed to produce that many tacks to release standard?

I treat it like a real job so I try and work nine-to-five, or sometimes until ten, eleven or twelve. I try to get up nice and early too so that I start my day earlier and consequently, don’t end up doing the graveyard early morning shift in the studio.

I understand that Amber Savage may be doing vocals on one of the tracks, did you meet through personal or professional connections?

Funnily enough, we met on MySpace. She wanted to do some vocal stuff together and she sent me a personal message. I checked her page out, thought that she had an incredible voice and we started from there. She is a fantastic singer!

What impact did your polling #5 in Queensland and #21 nationally in the inthemix50 have on your career?

It means being recognized as a popular DJ. I interpreted it as if people enjoyed my music, and my style of music that I play when I’m DJing - otherwise they wouldn’t have voted for me [laughs]. It has also given me drive to try and continue improving and step it up to that next level musically.

Yes it’s been great getting to meet more people in the industry. Everyone is so nice but incredibly busy! It’s always the same old story, get up late, work until late, and then the cycle recommences.

The second and third singles, ‘Jasmine’ & ‘Rose’ sound like they could be people’s names from your life, or is there an artistic/ professional story behind their titles?

‘Jasmine’ is now called ‘I Believe’. Originally, I thought of an idea to make an EP of tracks with an emotional twist by chucking in natural sounding sounds, and keeping to the warm fuzzy theme of flowers. Hence, ‘Rose’ and ‘Jasmine’. But Jasmine was then used as bedding for a vocal track and Amber jumped on the vocals and sung a chorus which includes the lyrics “I Believe”. So that first idea is out the window, but wait until you hear what ‘I Believe’ was meant to be, it’s come out great and will be the second single released. sDAVID WILLIAMS

When I play at Call It it will be a lot more housey without as many clicks and blips, a more diverse sound that should appeal to all tastes. Saturday nights for me are about creating a great vibe for the party. There will always be a bit of tech flavour in the house but of the warm bumpin’ party kind.

The sounds on the dance floor are always evolving and Call it... is a fresh night for the future sounds of house.

The difference for me is to ensure that the punters know there is a new club night to take your Saturday night out to a whole new level no matter what is on in town.

When I play at Call it... the tunes I play have a lot more of a techy/fidget element to them, and I tend to give it a bit more of a punch... They tend to be phatter and tougher than what I play elsewhere, which is usually more of an indie dance sound, with a broken beat.

Saturday nights at “Call it...” is all about good, fresh, underground dance music, which is what the crowd expects and wants to hear! The difference between DFD, and Call it... would be that it’s a fresh new year with fresh new sounds and exciting new beats. The music is forever evolving!

Firstly before I begin, Irish Murphy’s Hobart wishes to offer our sincere apologies to anyone in the vicinity of the Irish staff and friends party. Just Kidding! It was a ripper and great to see the likes of your very own editor in chief David K Williams getting down (quite literally) with aplomb. Just remember next time you plan on jumping off a roof Dave, you have to roll when you land, oh and avoid landing IN A HOLE! Hahaaaaaaahahaaaha!

Speaking of the staff party, it was an inspiration for ol’ Horse Shit here to have the tables turned and the staff on the receiving end of copious amounts of alcohol. So inspiring in fact that I’ve decided to regularly profile a lucky member of our beloved Irish staff. First cab off the rank, weighing in at a mighty 73kilos, entertainment and duty manager all rolled into one AND moonlighter as a solo singer/songwriter par excellence, Samuel ‘Sammy J’ Cole.

Oh, while you’re here, we’d like to talk with you about a new project we’re offering at the Greenhouse. Many of us who work with the Greeny play music ourselves, so we’ve got a fair understanding of the great and sometimes hard bits when it comes to putting your music out there. Working Hard or Hardly Working?

With massive touring and recording schedules, it would appear that The Lazys are anything but. Known for their full-on energy in live performances, they’ve been lucky to support big national and international bands, including Grinspoon and Juliette and the Licks. They’ve also recently finished a stint with the JD Set, a competition run by Jack Daniels to find the best live band in the country, the band managed to survive each round and go home the with the title. With a tag like that, we should be expecting some big things when they head down to play in Tasmania, and lead vocalist Leon Harrison lets us know why.

So, are you really lazy?

I love to lay on the couch and scratch my self, is that lazy?

With a spot on the JD Set and now continued support from Jack Daniels, you must have some pretty good drunken shenanigan stories. Care to share any?

Mmm yes plenty but one that sticks like shit! After we accepted the JD award and played a gig with Gyroscope, we managed to score a suite room in a very prestigious St Kilda hotel. Why they gave us that room I have no idea. Every man and his dog ended up coming back and had the party of a life time. A bed wetter who will remain anonymous managed to cost the band $2500 as the king size mattress was completely drenched and ruined. A Tasmanian oak door was somehow pulled from its hinges and the room genuinely looked like Bagdad. Believe me this is not usual behaviour, and the hotel ended up charging us $5000 for damages that we still to this day are paying off!! Lesson learned – ‘Don’t shit in your own nest,’ but what a night!

How did the experience of the JD Set change the band?

We owe a lot to Jack Daniels, the JD set, and the guys who give so much to make it such a success. It has given our band so much experience and exposure and for that we are so grateful. It was really satisfying to be involved with great people doing great things. It’s a nice thought knowing a company (JD) is willing to let young bands tour, giving them the opportunity to showcase their talents and passion. How has it changed the band, well I don’t think it has, how has it helped us, x 2 billion.

You’re renowned for your live performances, any ideas as to why?

I’m thinking it’s because we give it everything and because we believe in our music. We get on stage because it’s who we are and to be honest, I fucking love it!

What do you like best about touring and performing live?

The best thing about touring is the people you meet, the places you see and the gigs you play. There is nothing better than hanging out with your family (the boys) on this journey together. We do this because we believe in it and we know anybody who comes to a gig has similar feelings.

Where’s the best place your touring has taken you? (The answer better be Tasmania…)

Oh yeah, Tasmania for sure… To be honest the greatest experience I have ever had on tour is exploring Mt Wellington and thinking, ‘fuck, I’m alive’!

With the EP out soon, you’ve got tracks playing all over the place, including on hit TV shows.

How does having a commercial release change the game? Does it mean you can be lazier?

Well we aint lazy for a start! Nah, all that’s great and its fantastic exposure, but at the end of the day we’re still slogging it and will be for a long time. That’s the beauty about being in The Lazys!

How did you go about recording the EP? We recorded it at Alberts Studios which is home of AC/DC. That was such a thrill, such an honour. We basically wrote the EP and then muti tracked it. We spent along time on our sounds, which is something we have wanted to do in the past, but not had the opportunity. This EP is especially sentimental because it’s a true indication of the diversity you can expect from us in the future.

With another national tour about to hit fullswing, what can us Taswegians expect?

Surfing Economist Speaks Out

Peter Whish-Wilson decided to become political when he felt his dreams of living in clean green Tasmania, where he grows wine and likes to surf, became threatened by the Gunn’s pulp mill proposal. He’s now the endorsed Green’s candidate for Windermere. A teacher at UTAS, Whish-Wilson sees politics as an extension of the issues surrounding the proposal; climate change, marine pollution, corruption and ethics, and would like to see and implement change in these areas. And now he’s decided to reach out to Tassie’s youth and answer a few important questions.

You’ve been described as a “surfing economist.”

Um, what the hell does that mean?

This is Green’s leader Nick McKim’s idea, he introduced me as Tasmania’s “Surfing Economist” at my campaign launch, and its stuck. I think it’s a good description of who I am! I have 12 years experience in financial markets, teach Economics and Finance at UTAS and AMC and I’m Chair of the Surfrider Foundation in Tasmania. I’m a passionate person and people think it’s a bit weird to have this guy who’s supposed to be a chilled out surfer who teaches this heavy subject at Uni and gets involved in intense public battles and debates like the Pulp Mill. Actually, surfing helps to keep me balanced in this respect...it puts everything in perspective I suppose.

What do you see as the biggest issues plaguing the youth in Tasmania?

Boredom. Which can lead to antisocial behaviour, substance abuse and depression. They need outlets, especially in some of the lower socio-economic suburbs in my electorate of Windermere We need controlled spaces for activities, such as trail bike riding, drag races, skate parks. Let kids let of a bit of steam so to speak. I’m also keen to rebuild the George Town surf life saving club, get local kids down to the beach to compete and get them into coastal/marine stewardship. Employment is an important issue as well.

What drove you to run for a position in the Tasmanian Legislative Council?

It plays the vital role of scrutineering the lower house on important policies, a house of review so to speak.

It also has the power to hold select committees into matters of state importance. With my analytical background and perspective I’ve got a lot to offer in this role and feel I can make a difference on environmental, social and financial issues.

And finally, what do you enjoy about the arts/ music scene in Tasmania, and what, if anything, are you planning to do to improve it?

I go to see as many bands as possible when they are in town, and support local Tassie Bands like the Stoics.

I’ve always got into the music scene when I’ve been living around the globe and have been pretty lucky with what I’ve experienced. I’m also a “hack” (read: crap) painter when I get time. Tasmania has attracted and created many talented artisans inspired by the natural environment here. Events like 10 days, MS Fest, Festivale, Mona Foma and Falls are fantastic opportunities to showcase what Tassie has to offer,

Why do you think so many young people are lost to the mainland?

For employment, but its not just a Tasmanian thing, but we seem to have the biggest chip on our shoulders about it! Most kids in every city around Australia travel or move for work. We live in a global village, and Tasmanians often forget this! I think it’s a positive thing that youth travel when they can, get life and work experience and skills elsewhere, see a bit of the world.

If we keep Tassie beautiful and unique, they will come back, bring their money and skills, and start a family and so on. Most of the conflict I’ve had with people over my vision for the Tamar has been with those who have lived here all their lives, and haven’t travelled.

Perspective is so important, and you don’t get that without travel and life experiences.

Why should young people vote for you?

Because I’ll bash (ear?) them up if they don’t! Seriously though, I’ve got fresh ideas, significant business experience and education, pretty unique in today’s parliament, my vision is not just for today, but for tomorrow - we need to build our house on stone, not sand. Even though I’m an economist, I respect the environment as something more than just a resource to be exploited, but as something that’s part of my spirit and important for my wellbeing. Lastly I’ve also shown I’m not afraid to stand up for a fair go, no matter what.

As a Greens candidate, we can expect you’re strong on environmental issues. What is your biggest priority in this area?

Marine conservation and coastal protection, and I’ll continue this through my role at the Surfrider Foundation (a global marine conservation group).

Also, as an economist the push to formally outline “sustainable” economic development policies that can create jobs and employment without buggering the environment or bullying local communities, which I feel has happened with the pulp mill proposal my local community. This will require a new approach to planning in Tasmania, and brave leadership.

Why did you decide to join forces with the Greens, who are often a party targeted with criticism?

It’s a small party that is evolving, I’d like to be part of that evolution. The world is greening itself, what was once radical environmentalism is now mainstream.

The Greens have been at the forefront of much of this over the years and will continue to play a big role going forward. I also feel that I can influence positive outcomes in some new areas of Green policy development, such as on jobs and business development, which is something not often associated with the party. This will help with the brainless criticism that the Greens are “anti everything”!

How does running as an endorsed Greens candidate change your “independent” style?

Greens candidates have the ability to always vote with their conscience on all issues, so I can always vote and express my opinion if needed. I feel the Greens are also seen as the “moderating” force in both state and federal parliament, providing the checks and balances, in a way I suspect most people see the Greens as being the “independent” political force in today’s parliament anyway.

Formed whilst at Sydney University, four piece The Jezabels are bringing their fresh indie rock/pop sound to Tasmania in support of Josh Pyke, and also to play a headlining gig. With their EP The Man is Dead freshly on CD stands and digital download streams, we ask vocalist Hayley Mary about the origins of the band name, and delve into religious folklore…

In the Bible, Jezebel, was a princess, and then a queen. What do you guys have in common with her?

Nothing regal. It is more what she became later that interests us.

She turned her husband away from the god of Israel, and persuaded him to worship another deity. Who do you guys turn others away from?

That’s a difficult question, as we can never know how people will interpret us. We hope, I think, that everyone should be free to believe what they wish and not have one’s name and/or body dragged through the dirt for not converting to the favoured religion, trend, politics of their time. The main place where the JudoChristian vs pagan tension relates to The Jezabels is that we see the former as a huge reason why there is such polarity between the sexes in contemporary times and all look hopefully toward a time when this (and other) divisions between human kind are broken down.

Who have you turned away from, yourselves?

“The Man” [laughs]. But not without regret. Well I suppose we all turn away from the limits of monotheistic religion too, some of us more decidedly than others.

According to the story, Jezebel lead the Hebrews into idolatry. What are your idols?

Mainly human idols, in no particular order, the band collectively idolise: Beethoven, Jane Austen, David Bowie, Issac Newton, Karl Marx, Freddie Mercury, Charles Darwin (though not the racist misapplication of his theories), Oscar Wilde, David Bazan, Stevie Nicks, Cyndi Lauper, Virginia Woolf, our parents, friends, lovers and ex-lovers and hundreds of others.

Supposedly, she also led them into ‘sexual immorality’. What do you know of that? First hand? Third hand? You get the idea…

In their time this probably meant she spoke to him and he listened. God forbid listening to a woman. She must have him under her spell! No but really, good on them.

I mean, everything in moderation but we do need to be able to express ourselves sexually occasionally or we lose the plot.

And, according to Wikipedia, that ‘oh so’ reliable source of information, she was the power behind the throne when her sons ruled the land.

Who manipulates who, in the band, and with the band?

We recently had this conversation, (things get pretty deep on ten hour drives) being made up of two guys

and two girls, it’s interesting how much Sam and Nik feel that Heather and I have the “upper-hand,” but there are also times where the converse is true.

Heather and I have often reflected on how thankful we are to have found two guys who would be willing to deal with seemingly feminine focused music.

Though ironically, as females we have been partially conditioned to be “thankful” for any such situation in which the feminine is not submissive (and I think the guys would agree). That being said it does still take special guys to be able to deal with this kind of mini new world order. There are also always individual based power plays at hand; its sometimes easy to fall into blaming gender when really we’re just four pretty crazy people.

Where does the power really lie?

In the music and the compromise.

In the end, Jezebel was thrown out of a window to her death? Fair or unfair, and why?

I’m glad we came to that. I suppose her ability to “manipulate” i.e. lead, was threatening to the growing Christian powers, and all is fair in love and war. The fallen woman trope in general, however resilient, is not fair. No matter how high you’re flying or how lowly you appear, aren’t these just comparisons? Generally

with some falsely constructed idea of what normality, or morality is?

She was then eaten by dogs, with only her skull, feet and hands were left. What do you think is the symbolism of that?

I guess that’s the symbol of what happened to her after death. With only partial information to go on, history has subjected her to centuries of misrepresentation as a harlot or whore, leading to the commonplace, derogatory term “Jezebel”. We spell our name differently to the bible to remind people that Jezabel can be thought of in a way other than that, which that much revered book would have us think.

And how do you feel about dogs?

Punk’s Not Dead

“…While other bands are doing coke off each other’s leather pants backstage, we’re eating fruit, drinking water and talking shit...”

Hobart punk-rockers The Scandal are bringing back the dead (format) with a release on vinyl, the Edges/Seasickness 7” and are hoping to scandalise punk fans all over the country including two big nights in Tassie. We talk to Liam White about kickin’ it old school and keepin’ it real (real drums, that is).

Apart from your jocks and socks (please correct me if I’m wrong), what other personal items will you be taking on your upcoming national tour to promote the new EP? Definitely packing underwear and socks - we may be good at bare bones touring but we’re not that good! I’ll also be taking my mp3 player, earplugs (essential for sleeping on the floor in the middle of someone else’s house party), and some stuff that I’ve promised to lend people: my well-worn copy of a book on DC punk called Dance of Days and a copy of the Earthlings DVD that I’m passing on to some friends in Adelaide. I’ll be packing my trusty camera and some film too, for documenting life when we are on tour (film cameras are the best). I will be trying not to pack too much stuff for the round trip drive from Melbourne to Adelaide though, as I’m driving back my new ‘70s Marshall amp from Adelaide. eBay rules!

What’s different about the songs on this release compared with what you’ve done before?

The songs are really different to anything we’ve written before. We recorded the songs live all in a room together for the first time since making our first demos as a band, which I think has given the record way more energy than the album, Never Hold To Shore, had. The two songs on the 7” are both slow, almost grinding, repetitive songs, whereas on our previous record, we shied away from anything repetitive, and a lot of the songs were pretty fast. This record is one cohesive idea, for sure. We’re super happy with how it came out, both in terms of songwriting and recording.

Where across this vast brown land will you be

playing, and was it a case of play anywhere that would have you?

This tour we’re playing Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Newcastle, and Sydney. Because we live in two different states now, it’s harder to get together to rehearse and play shows, so we have to keep a bit of a lid on how much touring we can do. Last year we did a heap of touring that took in a lot of rural towns. This year I think we will be concentrating on playing cities.

Apart from the gigs, what else have you got to look forward to on this trip?

We’re pretty easy to entertain - give us good people and good food and we’re happy. We have good friends in all of the cities that we’re playing on this tour, and luckily a lot of them play in awesome bands. We’re especially looking forward to playing with Paper Arms from Adelaide on our Hobart leg of the tour; Nic and I have both had their demo on repeat for the past few months. It’s the best demo I’ve heard from a new band for ages. Sydney rules for food, Adelaide’s like a family visit these days, plus they have Coopers on tap everywhere there, and in Melbourne we’re playing the Arthouse’s 18th birthday show, which we feel really privileged to be doing. The Arthouse is basically a second home for punk bands right across the country, so we’re really stoked on playing its birthday show.

Who is the most likely to be dead, at the end of the tour, and what are they most likely to die from?

We’re way too lame and nerdy to die on tour. While other bands are doing coke off each other’s leather pants backstage, we’re eating fruit, drinking water and

talking shit. Maybe we’ll go out in a music industrywide program of social cleansing, nerds first. It’d need to be an appropriately ironic death though... maybe buried alive under hundreds of copies of Roget’s Thesaurus or systematically electrocuted by rows of valve preamps. Our death rattles would be recorded totally in analogue and released on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

Why the hell are you putting out your new EP on vinyl? Isn’t vinyl dead?

CDs are the dying format now, not vinyl. I love 7” records to death. Done well, they’re like a kick in the teeth that you don’t get from a CD EP. We wanted to release something short and sharp, and I think that suits the way the songs sit on the record too. In and out, no fucking around, a pretty good representation of our band, really. We are always pushing ourselves to do new things too, so after doing a split and an album, vinyl seemed the next logical thing to do.

What’s another piece of tech that you wish wasn’t dead?

Being a camera nerd, Polaroid film. That shit is expensive to buy.

What’s a piece that you wish was?

Sound replacers for drums. There are so many mediocre hardcore records with awful sound replaced drums that make them sound cheap and generic.

I know it sounds ‘rad’ on MySpace, but it sounds horrible when you listen closely. The parts of records that I love, that really make them last for me, are the parts that are human, that aren’t 100% perfect,

that let you know there’s a real person playing that instrument. We purposely mastered our 7” for the best audio quality instead of making it loud and in-yourface to try and reflect that idea. It’s all part of trying to aim for something organic and real, rather than another music-by-numbers record.

If you were dead, for a day, what would you do?

I wouldn’t be doing much, that’s for sure. Rotting.

Contributing to the world’s supply of fertiliser.

Feeding worms. Decomposing. I’d sure as hell talk a lot less. Probably not such a bad thing…

Who do you wish was dead, but are not, currently?

I don’t wish death on anyone specifically - humans are meant to be past that kind of Biblical eye-for-an-eye crap. Having said that, the world could do without Hummer drivers.

Who do you wish wasn’t deadand why?

Let’s see. Maybe Bon Scott. Although he’d be washed up by now. How about Pig Champion from Poison Idea? Yeah. sDAVID WILLIAMS

What is the cleanest thing you’ve ever been involved with?

Nothing! [Laughs] Everything I have touched has become tainted in some way.

I used to work at KFC when I was a young lad!

What was the best thing about being voted Australia’s #1 DJ? That in some way I must have made some people happy at one point for them to vote for me.

Expectation, I prefer to be the underdog.

Six hours, but now cause of the way I play I really cant play for more than 90 minutes…its like an action movie, not an epic.

Keeping it Clean

Tassie band The Dirty Love are back with a new EP, Roulette Romance, and are set to hit the state hard and throw some dirt around in support of the EP and will also be supporting NSW band The Lazys when they tour the state late May. We talk to lead vocalist and guitarist Aaron Damon about love, hate, and all things filthy.

Why the name change from Dirty Harry and the Rockets to The Dirty Love?

I think we decided when we changed the line up that it was time to move on and move forward and get a new band name… plus we got sick of the old name (it was shit anyways).

as far as our sound goes it all comes pretty natural. We have a good idea of how we want to sound and it just happens. In the studio on this last recording we really tried to capture a live sound. I think the band is at it’s best live and if we can put that energy onto a disc then that’s what we are about.

The new name came about when we were drinkin’ in the back stage room at the old James hotel in Launceston after a show we did with The Lazys. We showed ‘em our first EP which was titled Dirty Love and they said they were going to name their band Dirty Love ages ago, so we thought, lets do it!

What bands do you dirtily love?

The Casanovas, The Reverend Horton Heat, Motorhead, The Hellacopters, The Styles (RIP), Thin Lizzy, Spinal Tap, BRMC, The Beatles, Alice Cooper, Airbourne…

What’s so dirty about your love?

I’m not to sure but it could have something to do with the amount of Bass players we seem to be going through lately? We currently have Henry James on bass at the moment who has a thing for jammin’ in his underwear, last week these dudes from Italy came into our studio and it was an awkward feeling, we wanted to say ‘Not all Aussie’s are like that, just this guy!’

Do you try to add an element of dirtiness to your sound?

I wouldn’t say we try to add dirtiness to our sound. It’s loud rock n roll, sometimes it can be dirty, sometimes it makes people violent and want to smash shit up. But

What things do you cleanly hate?

Airports, Tom Cruise, whistlers, key rattlers, cheap wine - I fucking hate cheap wine, oh, and Tom Cruise.

Where did you film the video for your track ‘Dirty Sweet’? It looked like a fun shoot.

We filmed the ‘Dirty Sweet’ clip in Devonport at the Warehouse Niteclub. Dave Sykes and Hutch TV produced the clip and we were just told to turn up with a geeky set of clothes and a nice change of clothes. We didn’t get told that we had to wear coke bottle glasses and mime chicago songs to an audience.... But it was our first clip, it was fun, we learnt a lot out of it and we are very happy with the way it’s turned out. We didn’t want anything that made the band look too serious because that’s not really what we are about. I think this clip is a bit funny and thanks to everybody who was in it!

You’ve got a new EP out soon, Roulette Romance.

Tell us a little about the record, and how you came up with the title.

We decided this time we wanted to make a record that sounds more like the band. So we went over to Birdland studios in Melbourne. Lindsay Gravina helped us by producing the EP and Rob Long engineered it. The studio over there is fucking awesome and it’s really

close to Chapel Street so we had a lot of fun. We spent a week tracking, three days mixing and the end result is being really well received. It definitely shows that the band is improving which is what you want when you look back at all your old stuff. As for the Roulette Romance name, it’s just the name of one of the tracks on the EP. I wrote the song and then thought that it sounded like a sweet name.

Going Greene Paul Greene has recently been introduced to a few more people thanks to the success of his most recent CD, Distance over Time. With almost constant touring to build a fanbase, Greene is quickly gaining supporters of his songwriting and performing talents, often being known as one of the best unsigned artists out there. We ask Paul what makes him green with envy…and every other green-based pun question we could think of.

What’s your favorite color, and why?

Green of course; it’s got my name in it. I am also fond of heliotrope and puce.

What’s the Green-est thing you’ve done recently?

I gave my food scraps top the chooks, looked at an ad for solar panels, and sat at McDonald’s free broadband and didn’t buy anything. I also get a kick out of writing to members of Parliament and making outlandish, if not practical, requests, like give everyone free water tanks, and solar panels, and give the people logging old growth forests commercial hemp licenses. They usually write back (see MySpace blog).

What turns your stomach green?

I have a cast iron stomach and can eat just about anything. (3 day old pizza anyone?) I guess my most disastrous cooking exploit was when I slaughtered a rooster at home, because it was waking all the neighbours up and attacking the kids. I heard that if you just chuck the whole bird on a fire, all the feathers burn off - being into bush cooking, this made sense, but the result was a very black, tough, chewy carcass that tasted like burnt feathers. Smoking whilst drunk also makes me spontaneously vomit.

When was the last time you were green with envy?

I missed out on seeing Elbow recently - probably my favorite band of this decade - some of my friends were there, and I couldn’t be. Gutted!

Great Crop actually. My gardening skills are really coming along. Yes, Things have been going well of late. I’m Still buzzing from my shows at blues fest, had a bunch of really nice festival gigs this year. I am just about to convert a Coaster into a tour palace, complete with mini bar and video games, which is pretty exciting. Over all I am very grateful for the musical path that I have chosen. Still independent, and all the hard touring is working. Actually, I love my job and still cant believe that I get to sing and make up songs for a living.

How many people have you met, with the surname Browne?

I went out with two separate girls in high school with the surname Browne (not at the same time, I think) I thought that if we ever got hitched we could change our name to Khaki.

What jokes did kids make, using your last name, at school?

Just the word GRREEENEY with a good Aussie nasal twang is pretty offensive. Greenie-Snot was a beauty.

What similarities do you have with the Incredible Hulk, both personally and professionally?

We are both indestructible, and have an aversion to tight underpants. People tend to pay attention when we get pissed off. We both break a lot of guitar strings, and are both nice guys deep down.

You have the capacity to take control of the way your Hep C impacts on your life Through sharing your experiences and hearing from others you will be better equipped to deal with the impact of hepatitis C on your life.

Activities will include looking at existing skills, knowledge and supports and setting goals for improved health management.

Of course you may also make some friends!

The group is intended to be confidential and you will need to contact us to find out more.

If you have ever felt isolated because of living with hepatitis C; if you have ever wanted to know more about managing the effects of Hep C then this group could be for you.

During May tasCAHRD’s Hepatitis C Program will be conducting groups in the south, north and north-west for people living with hepatitis C. The groups will focus on managing the impacts of hepatitis C on the lives of people affected.

The groups are based on the view that everyone is an expert on their own lives and that good management of chronic conditions comes from a partnership between the person living with the condition and health carers.

Activities will include looking at existing skills and knowledge and setting goals for improved health outcomes.

Confidentiality and connection are important in the group so they are only suitable for people currently living with Hep C. The groups are free and some catering will be supplied.

Halo Wars

Tactical spin off world.

Released late February 2009 by Microsoft and conveniently available directly from XboxLive Marketplace Halo Wars is a strategy game set in the Halo universe prior to the original. Fans of the Halo: Combat Evolved series and satisfying sequels Halo 2 and 3 no doubt rushed to get this title to put alongside their existing collection.

What sets this game apart is that it is a prequel that covers the story leading up to the original Halo game.

What I feel is a great feature for a prequel is that it has not followed the action first person shooter theme of the series and has been given an alternate path by being a strategy game. The similarities lie in that you command armies of UNSC marines, various Spartans, familiar warthogs and scorpions in their initial encounter against the aliens threatening the existence of man, The Covenant.

This being a real time strategy (RTS) opens the Halo universe up to a new type of gamer whereby tactics and time is of the essence to conquer the game with viable strategies. The controls are rather easy to pick up and quite responsive for those who are not so familiar with

RTS genres. The simplified controls means that you can get enough enjoyment of deploying and keeping track of armies in generally spacious environs. Each of the various troops and vehicles you deploy are identifiable and are nicely animated. Voiceovers of objectives from your command centre and responses from your team as you give them directives gives great satisfaction of being in the hot seat and your armed forces are doing your bidding. The on screen HUD and selection icons are very easy to spot and don’t obscure your view of ensuing battle. Mission stats are also available with optional objectives to clear meaning, you can play it like a stroll in the park or take the scenic route. The tutorial system is very easy to understand and is a separate feature so you don’t have to plod through the spoon feeding before you get to the real

game. The strengths of your army differs whereby troops/vehicles are effective against certain types of foes and it is effectively a concept like rock paper scissors once you get the hang of it. The variance in difficulty makes it gratifying that you must make strategic decisions under pressure to obtain a win or the upper hand. Sometimes the tables turn so it there is a good level of AI opposition and a key decision or lack thereof can lead to your troops being completely decimated or you own big-time. If you get lonely playing by yourself and would like a real opponent to battle with you can system link 2 to 6 players or hop on Xbox live for cooperative gameplay.

Something that I loved about the game is the animation of the characters, environment and also the great cut scenes, which fluidly weaves the story through the gameplay. There is nothing worse than hours of drudgery before you’re rewarded with a cutscene. This game rewards you each mission, which are precluded by a lavishly animated movie that shows magnificent scenery and attention to detail with characters. Your battle might be local but the cutscenes do give a larger than life feel to the battle and events leading up to each mission. The fleet you fly is the Spirit of Fire, which gives you an upper hand with devastating attack options to utilise within battle. The SoF also has an AI on board, which is not as witty as Cortana and has less likeable banter with the commanding officer. Familiar faces abound in the movies and you get to see many more Spartans other than master chief kicking ass and taking names. sTIARNE DOUBLE

Why is it that people in service industries always want to know how I am? They don’t really. Why bother asking?

“How are you?”

“Good.”

That’s how the conversation is meant to go. Simple, meaningless and trite. It’s always nice then, to confuse a check out chick or someone similar with something like this; “How are you?”

“How am I? Well… I was raised Catholic, so there’s a Pandora’s box right there, but even more disturbing is the fact that I was actually an altar boy for a while, and yes I know what you’re thinking… Catholic priests… altar boys… But let me tell you there was never any kind of lecherous advances made towards me. I mean, not even once… sure all the other boys got to go on the special “communal wine” tours, but I was never even looked at. It’s no wonder I have such low self esteem… I thought being altar boy sounded kind of cool, kind of like a super hero side kick. “Look out! It’s Altar Boy!” Then I’d arrive in a magic robe and shorten the hems on people’s trousers. It wasn’t like that though. This was, after all, the 80’s which was still 1957 Central Roman Catholic time. There was an old priest called Father Rex that kept us in line. He made us do rehearsals and stuff. He’d say these amazing things like “Only God can do two things at once.” Which would be answered by a group of altar boys simultaneously rubbing their bellies and patting their heads. We were meant to be these holy little servants of the church, but we were little bastards really. We’d prank each other. We had to ring bells, and one guy would undo all the nuts that held the bells on the ringer, so when you rang them, they all fell off and clanged along the floor in all directions. Funny, but not holy. Father Rex would keep a church service going no matter what though.

He insisted that one of us hold this heavy book that he read out of. One time one of the kids holding it fainted under the strain of it. He was given a quick blessing before the book was handed to another poor wretch

and the farce continued. I accidentally set myself on fire once, standing too close to a candle and the cheap polyester robe… I ran around the altar desperately slapping at my flaming shoulder and ended up doing a full stop drop and roll thing. Not even that was enough to stop a church service. I mean they didn’t even dowse me with holy water! Hadn’t they heard of baptism of fire? So yes, in short, I have issues…”

“Um. That’ll be 37.50 thanks. Er… Would you like a bag?”

“Only if it’s full of dust.”

“Er.” True story. Whatever truth is.

Blowing Up “I was in Adelaide last year and this young girl at a car hire place asked me to tell her a joke. So I told her my favourite joke, which is - the inflatable boy who goes to an inflatable school where the teachers are inflatable, the students are inflatable and all the buildings are inflatable. Then the boy gets in trouble for bringing a pin to school, and the headmaster says ‘you’ve let me down, you’ve let yourself down, you’ve let the whole school down.’ And her response was to look at me and go – ‘oh, that’s a Dad joke!’”

At age thirty-eight, and approaching his twentieth year of performing stand-up comedy, telling a ‘Dad joke’ was one sign of aging Adam Hills wasn’t prepared for.

The experience was also one that led to the creation of his new show, Inflatable. Developed and workshopped while Hills was in London last year, Inflatable is a show that looks at various topics from things he’s learnt, what he wants to teach his future kids, how anyone on the planet can be inflated or deflated, and of course, music.

[team captains] Myf [Warhurst] and Alan [Brough] and the audience, in that I’ve got a fairly good musical knowledge, but I don’t have it to the degree that Myf and Alan, or even any of the other guests do, but I can translate what they’re saying to the general public.”

Obviously too he helps provide the humour, which help make Spicks and Specks so popular. The show has also led to meeting some amazing people and hearing some amazing stories, a highlight for Hills being when ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic was a guest.

One of the things Hills has learnt, is that if you can sing some Jon Bon Jovi songs, you have the potential to bond with people all over the world. “I was backstage at a gig in Belgium and there’s this long story about how myself and five Belgian comics, none of who had a common language, suddenly bonded because we could all sing ‘Always’ by Jon Bon Jovi. So, there is a little bit of music going on in the show as well. In fact there’s a massive music rant, I go on a real old man rant about how The Doors had an album that was only available in Starbucks last year, and just how inappropriate it is that Jim Morrison, the Lizard King, is available in Starbuck, and only in Starbucks.”

One of the best things about the show in Hills eyes though, is the way it’s now a place for Australian musicians to be seen and get their names out there, in lieu of shows like Countdown, which don’t exist anymore. For him personally, it also allows a sixmonth off period in which he can concentrate on his comedy. As soon as they finish filming the series at the end of May, Hills will be heading to the Kilkenny Comedy Festival and then on to London, where he will base himself for the rest of the year, and his Inflatable show will go with him.

Hills is probably known to most people as the Gold Logie nominated host of the comedic music quiz show, Spicks and Specks, which has been airing on the ABC since 2005. After doing an ABC show called Stand-Up, Hills got a phone call from the producers, and “they told me they wanted to focus on Australian music, and have guests that were really important to Australian music, and they said they could film it all in a six month bracket so I cold go back overseas and do what I do in London, and all of those things said it was the perfect job.”

“The show itself isn’t necessarily inflatable, although I’ve got, as a stage set, massive balloons on stage.

Despite selling out his performances, and gaining great reviews for the ones he managed to fit in, his show ‘Songs From The 86 Tram’ was cancelled and refunds offered to ticket holders.

Fans of the Australian comedian, musician and writer will still be able to hear him on his Triple R radio show and will be able to catch him on the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow throughout May and June, and heading to Tasmania in June.

If you can’t catch either of those shows, be sure to check out his new CD Brown and Orange, which was released in February this year.

Invisible Boy are a young five-piece acoustic folkpop group based in Tasmania, and this is their debut release. Catchy singalong compositions, sweet pop harmonies, sparkling acoustic guitar, and a strong rhythmic backbone of drum and bass guitar all combine to make this a very solid and confident collection of songs.There is an overarching uplifting feeling, youthful optimism and hope in this album, even in the songs that deal lyrically with tangles of the human heart there is a breezy summery quality to the music that never allows the mood to darken.

The self-titled EP Shoe comes from a (as they proclaim) ‘rock/punk/alternative’ band from northwest Tasmania. From exploring the cover, I got the impression that a certain degree of larrikinism was involved in the creation of this product. I put it on with that in mind.

This is one of the best electro, dance music CDs I’ve heard in a while.

I seem to be picking great CDs to review lately, and this is no exception. In fact, I love it. Chasm, Ozi Batla and Sir Robbo have done a great job, technically and artistically.

Most of the vocals are shared by guitarists Ben McKinnon and Daniel Townsend, with delightful harmonies from Mary Cuthbertson, whose sweet voice is also showcased when she takes lead vocals on ‘Mother Daughter’ and the jazzy ‘Half True.’ The instrumentation is kept simple and understated, first and foremost there to carry the vocal melodies and the lyrics, with the acoustic guitars occasionally providing small flourishes that add to the musical colour. The inclusion of drums and bass guitar into the acoustic format really adds oomph without being overbearing, and as a result the songs take on a really confident, strident momentum. There are a few recurring themes through these songs – ‘Mother Daughter’ and ‘HandMe-Down’ both describe changing relationships between parent and child, and ‘Willow Rain’ is a young father’s celebration of his newborn baby. Many other songs talk about freedom of spirit and feeling small in a big world. While these are mature themes to tackle, they are delivered with innocence and guilelessness and the spirit is lifted as a result. sBRADFIELD DUMPLETON

Well, there turned out to be one or two elements of silliness in the songs, but the majority of the writing and arrangement is quite emotive and personal. The style really isn’t one I listen to a lot of in my real life but I can definitely see how it would have some popular appeal.

Out of the six tracks, there isn’t really a standout song for me. The playing is tight and the sound production well done. The tone of the guitars and vocals are nice.

The high energy, stylised sensitivity and musicality displayed here I think are the recording’s main strengths. The overall vibe is of a band just having some fun, playing some rock and roll and being a bit angsty at the same time. It’s all very good, but nothing special.

With all that in mind, I’m sure a live show of this band would be entertaining.

The EP may be a bit ambiguous as an artistic statement but it certainly does show off the talent of the band well. Their main intention for it probably was just to be an exhibition of their craft anyway.

It stands out to me like MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular did. This is much tougher in sound, overall, but still has a great party feel. It has that dirty electro sound, grindstyle of dance music, and great beats and rhythm, with similarities, in style, with music by Justice and Daft Punk, as well as The Presets and Pnau.

But, it’s a bit of a genre-smasher. It’s rock-meetsdance-meets-rap-meets-anything sound makes for great variety, but with an overall style that holds the songs together as an album.

Guests really add to it. It says a lot about the class of the band, that this CD features guest vocals by 6 times Grammy Winner and R&B superstar, John Legend, as well as Ghostface Killah, of the Wu Tang Clan, plus Isis, Missy Elliot protégé, Ll’ Mo, and Freeway, and ... well the list goes on. You may have heard the first single, an ode to hedonism, called ‘Bounce’, which features US rapper, N.O.R.E, and has crossed over from Triple J to commercial radio.

It’s the kind of CD you’d put on to make your party go off!

Definitely worth checking out.

It is different in style than many releases from the Oz Hip-hop community, and stands out in originality. It’s got a feel of old-school funk and Motown, and also of reggae. You’ve probably heard the single, and seen the funky film clip for ‘Where You At?’, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this CD. It starts out assertively, with ‘Dishing Dirt,’ which does just that dishing dirt to record labels, boring artists and others.

The CD winds up with ‘Breathless Rap,’ which is an instrumental with a clever title. In between there are tracks with a variety of styles, ranging from ‘Breather’ which I think sounds like a Cat Empire track, to ‘Blood Transfusion’ which reminded me, in the opening, of Eminem, but also inspired, music-wise, by elements of work by Terminator X from Public Enemy.

Guests also enhance this release, with some of the best vocalists from the Hip-hop, dub and reggae music community in Australia contributing, such as Lotek (Big Dada), Hau (Koolism), Urthboy and Jane Tyrrell (The Herd), BVA (Mnemonic Ascent), Ben Ezra (ESL), Gina Mitchell (Fbi’s Basslines) and DJ Skoob.

The production of the CD is great, such that you don’t even think about it. It’s of the highest standard, which we have come to expect. It’s on ‘high-rotation’ with me.

SOUNDCHECK - out and about in the hottest venues DARLINGTON + HOME BAND @ Irish Murphy’s Greenhouse, 23-Apr

I was anticipating a rather pleasant, quiet(ish) night down at the Greenhouse. I had seen Home Band play before a couple of times, but I didn’t know who Darlington was. The music started relatively late, at around 10pm. An advantage of the gig starting at this time (though I’m not sure of the reason) was that more people had turned up by the time the first act Darlington casually rocked up.

It turned out Darlington were a three piece (bass + drums + guitar/vox) that played a pretty cool poppy/ folky set. I liked the lead singer’s voice - it was quite intense. He had an unusual hunched style of playing – holding the guitar upwards slightly. I think he relaxed more towards the end though. I’m still not really much the wiser who they are exactly.

As the night progressed, more people gradually wandered in. It think it actually turned out to be as big a crowd as you’re ever likely to see out on you average Thursday night in Hobart. And is Hobart to become the epicentre of a new Americana revival wave? Probably not, but I’d say there is a genuine universal likeability for the1960’s inspired original music of the last act – Home Band.

This was the most mad gig I’ve ever experienced at The Republic. It went off! The room was chockas. There was moshing, even crowd surfing, and at one point when some of the crowd got a bit out of control, the band had to calm things down to just a crazy level. The sound was great, helped, no-doubt, by the use of the band’s own sound engineer on the mixing desk.

They ripped out all the hits from the albums, Guillotine and Thieves, and everyone sang along, especially to ‘Russian Roulette’, ‘Tie Up My Hands’, ‘Run The Red Light’, ‘Said I’m Sorry’ and, of course, ‘God Is Dead, Meet The Kids’ after which this tour was named.

Declan Melia was outstanding as a vocalist, sounding great, even when he was singing with his shirt pulled over his face.

Lead guitarist, Nic Wilson was in great form, like drummer Matt O’Gorman and Will Drummond on bass. Not only did they play, but they gave everything they had, with Nic Wilson sweating like he’d run a marathon, his long hair spraying about wildly.

It is charming the way the four-piece don’t have a concrete design as to who sings or plays what instrument. They swap around regularly creating interest. I’ve seen them get more enthusiasm from a crowd on previous nights, but a good number of people did get up to dance eventually. In the end, there was a satisfactory amount of floorboard creaking.

Early on in the gig, Declan said that every time they play at The Republic, it feels like a house party. I think it was beyond that.

CRACK TAXI @ Syrup, 14 April

When you see the Dukes of Windsor play a gig like they did on this night, it makes you wonder why they are not as popular as The Presets, for example. They have that rock/electro sound, are great on stage, play well, are entertaining and have a vocalist with an amazing voice, which is clear and strong.

Maybe their latest single ‘It’s A War’ will be their launching pad. I hope so. The crowd certainly loved it.

Everyone had a great time, it seemed, both the band and the crowd, who danced and jumped the night away and sang along. But there’s always one who spoils things, isn’t there? Some jerk copped an earful from singer, “Well, now you’ve got the attention you wanted, dickhead!”

Locals Ivy Street were first up, as people started to file in. They played a strong set, and I really liked the lead singer’s voice. It reminds me of someone famous, which I can’t quite put my finger on, which is probably a good thing, ‘cause if it was so similar to someone that I could pick it straight away, I probably wouldn’t like it as much. I’m going to follow this band and see what happens. I know there’s a lot of people out there that like them too.

Next up were New Saxons, who I like a lot, too, and they put in a good performance of their indie-pop style, or at least that’s how I read it.

Going Boldly

“…It’s a character driven film more than a film about science fiction or special effects...”

April 7th 2009 saw the world premiere of the first new Star Trek film in seven years. Some would say, the first good Star Trek film in decades. Bruce Moyle from (Cool) Shite on the Tube was tapped on the shoulder by fate to attend this momentous event and was also lucky enough to talk to some of the leading cast as well as the director JJ Abrams about the film.

In recent years, Karl Urban has appeared in films such as The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Doom and The Chronicles of Riddick. He plays the part of Dr Leonard McCoy, more affectionately known as ‘Bones’; the occasionally bad tempered physician of the Enterprise. Karl was extremely forthcoming in talking about the role and becoming a part of the Star Trek universe.

Thanks for coming out and showing us Star Trek in Sydney at the Opera House.

It’s an amazing film, I was glad to see it with you guys in the audience. It was sort of an emotional experience in some respects, because [I] haven’t seen a decent Star Trek film in such a long time on the big screen. [And] having you guys in the audience and being quite rapt in what you guys had put on the screen is amazing.

So, its an ensemble film, and you’ve done quite a few ensemble films now, Lord of the Rings and even Chronicles of Riddick, do you find that you ‘shine’ with ensemble films; working with other actors and cast-mates like that?

Yeah, well personally I think that I do my best work when I’m placed in an environment with people of such high caliber as JJ Abrams, Chris Pine or Peter Jackson, [all] those guys, Paul Greengrass… If you work with smart and insightful people, who have a wonderful understanding of cinema lore, that’s where you get the best work.

But a film never turns out the way you think it’s going to turn out. You go into a film and everyone’s like “this is going to be the greatest film in the world” and the script is fantastic and they watch the rushes and they’re buying yachts and art. And then come the premiere, and it doesn’t do what everyone expects and they all go bankrupt. But I feel pretty blessed to be a part of this film, because being a long term Trek fan, in my opinion I really think that it delivers the very spirit and essence of what [Gene] Roddenberry created back in the mid sixties. It’s a character driven film more than a film about science fiction or special effects and JJ and the cast and the writers have done a really extraordinary job.

How did you get the job? Was it a standard audition?

I had a meeting with JJ Abrams first off and really thought that I’d blown the meeting because I went into the meeting and he was like “This film is going to be amazing,” you know, “it’s going to be this and that” and I was like “awesome , great!””and he asked if I had any questions and I [said] “Can you tell me what’s the story?” and he goes “Can’t tell you” and I

was like, “Well then, I guess I’ve got no questions.”

And I really thought that at that point I’d blown the interview. Because it was sort of “Oh... Ok great, well, ok um... we’ll see you in a while.” And I went out of there thinking I’d tanked it. Then two months later I got a call from JJ saying he’d love for me to come in and read for the character of Bones, for which I was thrilled just to be given the opportunity! I went in and the audition went well. I literally knew at the end of the take. He’s like “Wow that’s it. That’s Bones.” He looked around to his producer and [April Webster] his casting director and they were just like “yes.” So I had a pretty good indication early on that it went well.

In preparing for the role of Bones, Deforest Kelley [the original series actor] has passed on, but a lot of the others are still alive. The other cast has had the advantage of talking to them.

How did you prepare to bring Bones to life and research that character?

That’s a good question. You know I have the utmost respect for what Mr Kelley did with the character of Leonard Mc Coy. You know back in the original series he came in as a supporting player as the doctor,

through the strength of this work and the chemistry between Mr Shatner and Mr Nimoy he elevated the character to third billing status in the matter of a season or two. The chemistry worked. I have huge respect for what he did. The challenge was to present the character of Bones, not being an imitation of what Deforest did, but in the same sense trying to be some sort of an embodiment of the very essence, or soul and spirit of what he created. And that’s pretty tough. But to me the key is how does the character react in any given situation. And one of the wonderful elements of this character is that he is irascible and he is gruff and grumpy. [He has] The most appalling bedside manner, but underneath that he has an absolute heart of gold.

He is altruistic, humane, caring, a most loyal friend. As you’ll see in the film. sBRUCE MOYLE Star Trek opens in Australia on may 7th. Mc Fashion. Cheap, easy, and virtually disposable, ‘fast fashion’ has hit the market in a big way. Think Supre, Dolly, Valley Girl…Globalisation has made it possible to produce clothing and accessories at rock-bottom prices. Prices are so low that consumers forgive the fact that the pieces are often poor quality. Many are just happy that they are able to afford this seasons ‘must-have’ pieces, or the latest designer knock-off of the bag Britney carries her dog in.

Well, this week I found a new version of disposable fashion, in the form of a ‘Free Clothing Box’. I was wary in approaching it. Surely such a box would only contain items so hideous that even the 50 cent rack wouldn’t have them.

Or so I thought. I cautiously bent down for a look. And there, hidden amongst a few ghastly pieces, I found a brand new One Teaspoon sweatshirt (no, I don’t mean a rag covered in sweat! Obviously, I love the fact I picked up three great pieces of clothing for free. From a budgeting perspective, you can’t do better than that. But more importantly, I love the idea of recycled clothing. The production and disposal of clothing has a huge negative impact on the environment.

By recycling clothing I am not only saving money, but I am also helping to save the environment. Mc Fashion?

Having toured Spain, Ireland, and a number of art festivals, next on the agenda is recording their debut EP, which Genevieve and Esala are putting together in Melbourne with New Zealand producer Seth Rees. Hopefully we can expect more of the sweet, delicate sounds that feature on Genevieve & Jezebel’s MySpace, www.myspace.com/genevievejezebel.

And now the Genevieve & Jezebel are heading southbound to delight us with the hum of their hypnotising harp, playing in Hobart this May. Heed the harp.

For those who haven’t witnessed the toe-tapping gypsy music experience, with bands like The Woohoo Revue and The Crooked Fiddle Band, you’re in store for a full on assault on traditional gypsy and tango music from The Barons of Tang, featuring hard-hitting guitar riffs, blasting beats and massive horn arrangements played with their trademark raw energy and hard edge.

Having played many odd locations perhaps typical of a gypsy band, including under a bridge, the band are in Tassie for a more traditional venue this month.
