11 years ago … Well, I was only eight, so I wasn’t really up to much – probably still getting used to not breast feeding and having to watch Sesame Street. I remember watching my dad playing guitar and thinking what a waste of time that looked like – but I guess if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

11 months ago … Funnily enough, this is around the time when our band shed was completed (we call it the band shed, but really, it’s a place for us to store “musical treasures.”) We have our own studio room out in the sticks near Delrock; it’s got nice couches, a little recording rig, good heating and a cold fridge. It’s a great creative space in the middle of the bush, so we can crank it up and get a bit loose.

In all forms of music, you can never underestimate the importance of sheer experience, and one look at the length of Andrew Farrell’s Gandalf-like facial hair illustrates that “experience” is something these two have a lot of. Practitioners of a special blend of jazz and blues, The Wizard & Oz are about to provide the soundtrack to Stage Door the Café’s third birthday … so we got in touch with the less hairy half of the duo, Dave McMillan …

When were you first exposed to music? Did you come from a musical family?

I first remember music from around the age of three. My parents could both sing pretty well.

Playing at music festivals – I recommend all performers go and play some. The audiences are there firstly for music, and they are great listeners.

How did you first meet Andrew Farrell? How long have you been playing together?

We’ve been playing together for twenty years; we played in the same places as soloists and just got to know each other.

If you had a musical philosophy, what would it be?

If you want to be a performer, don’t do it unless you love it. I speak to so many players who complain about the way things are. We’re all playing in the same sand pit, aren’t we?

What have the two of you been working on recently?

We are just about finished with our first original CD; it’s taken a while because we’ve been getting friends to play on it and had to get them when they were available and in the area, and gently explain that they were doing it for free.

What was the one band or artist that changed your life, and why?

The Beatles – some of the most amazing melodies to come out of two people, and that’s without even mentioning George’s later work.

How would you describe yourself as a musician, in terms of your playing and your singing?

My guitar playing is very adequate, but I think of myself as a singer firstly. I always endeavor to sing the song from within, and transport the audience into that particular story.

After these shows, what’s next for you two?

Finishing the CD, and more festivals around the country – love it.

11 weeks ago … Was nothing special. Enough said.

11 days ago … This day will go down in history as one of the biggest days in rock history (according to our “sound tech” Henry). This was when he turned legal, and started having dreams of his beloved Chris Cheney, Bon Jovi, and maybe even having a singing voice. Me, I was at work, designing shit as I’m a graphic designer; e-mail mister_productions@live.com (nice plug for myself there).

11 hours ago … I had the best dream. Playstation brought out a Guitar Hero – Cruel Like That Version! I woke up laughing and pondering the possibilities of an illegal operation in my parents’ shed.

11 minutes ago … The boys started setting up for a private function we have in Devonport, and I told them I was too busy to help (well … an excuse is an excuse).

Oh, and I fixed our bloody Myspace.

Melbourne’s Pablo Discobar – walking, talking, noisy proof that size does matter. They sound like what happens when you put eight rocking musicians in a blender and hit the “smoothie” button, and they are coming to Tassie to make you shake your booty. Prepare to be funked like you’ve never been funked before. On the phone to SAUCE; singer-guitarist Arik Blum …

How did this ensemble first come together? What was each of you doing previously?

The Pablo Discobar story began many years ago in outback Zaire, when an oryx horn was blown from the top of a mountain and a motley crew of eight fine specimens of human males congregated, not too dissimilarly to Ron Burgundy’s news team. I should come clean and mention that the band is purely a decoy for our real jobs. We’re actually all quite accomplished figure skaters. We’re the first eight-person group to pull off the inverse human pyramid on ice whilst singing Ricky Martin’s Livin’ La Vida Loca in Russian.

What’s the story behind the band’s name?

No one remembers, but it feels like a cross between an infamous South American and a 1970s musical fad … Word is that a bar in Belgium appropriated the name. They should be expecting our lawyers.

How would you describe the Pablo Discobar live show?

What makes it unique?

High energy, hard-hitting soul excitement. With one foot entrenched in the influences of 60s/70s super-heavy soul, Pablo Discobar keep things current with a strong emphasis on fresh breaks, beats and grooves.

Last we heard you guys were working on a recording.

What stage is that at now?

Our first single Give it to Me is complete, and available on the so-totally-2006 networking site Myspace. The rest of the album (our debut long-player) is still being mixed inbetween mini-tours; it should be hitting record shops in September or so.

What can you tell me about this new material, in terms of the sound and vibe? Is it much of a departure from what you’ve done previously?

I would say the album will be much more diverse than our previous EPs – along with the upbeat get-down-and-boogie stuff, there’re a couple of much slower groove ballads, and a new version of an older tune called The Family. The recording is still as close to our live sound as possible – we recorded it with two extra members, so it was ten guys in a studio, playing at once, vibing off each other. Musically we have a common vision to keep things simple and easy – when you try and say too much, you say nothing at all.

How did you first fall in love with funk? What was it about the genre that has such an appeal to you?

With the “soul revivalist” movement gaining increasing momentum spurred by Amy Winehouse’s crack addiction, Pablo Discobar have been a staple on Australia’s circuit long before the aforementioned lost all her teeth. We take inspiration from the pioneers of Motown and Memphis. For

me, soul funk is all about the deep grinding feeling you get when a band hits the one. If hit hard and tight, then you just can’t help putting on your funk face, stomping your foot or shaking your ass. Good soul funk is born out of the interplay between an assortment of really simple loops and melodies. When all the things lock in, you are left with a sound that shakes a room.

What plans do you have for after this tour? What will you be getting up to?

Mostly finishing the record and touring up the East Coast and over to New Caledonia to escape the Melbourne winter

blues. We still need to design some album artwork, and then once the album is done, we’ll head out on the road again throughout summer 08/09. In amongst all of that, we’ll be jamming out new grooves to keep it fresh and make every show different.

Lastly, just for the hell of it, if the members of Pablo Discobar were members of the animal kingdom, which animals would they be, and why?

Our rhythm section would be Ugandan gorillas, our horn section would be South American spider monkeys, and our lead singer would soar as a bald eagle. Those animals represent us much closer physically than metaphorically.

Psycho Fan Leaves An Impression

These are demanding times for Sydney’s darlings of electro house, The Potbelleez; when they’re not doing laps of the map to support their latest single Are You With Me, they’re crammed into their studio for days at a time working on an album set for release later this year, vocalist Ilan Kidron told SAUCE. So dust off your dancing shoes (and remember to go to the bathroom beforehand), because The Potbelleez are about to rock Tassie. Are you with them?

What did you get up to on this weekend just gone?

We’ve just had a massive weekend. We were in New Zealand, touring over there for the first time, and it was awesome; it was a sold-out show there, and we just had a blast. And then we went to the Gold Coast on Saturday night.

My ultimate party scenario is … wow, I would say it’s something out of the 1970s … I’d say the Jimi Hendrix Experience is playing in the corner, and there are people dressed as they would have been in the 70s, all having a screamer.

There’re probably psychotropic drugs involved, and dangerous sexual kung fu moves going on …

So you played New Zealand on Friday?

Yeah, Thursday and Friday – we did two shows there; one just for Ministry, and then, on the Friday night, we did a big public gig, and it was massive.

“Sexual kung fu moves” … there’s a mental image.

Yeah, on the dancefloor, I mean.

You’d barely have time to scratch yourself, would you?

Well, we’re very busy at the moment working on the album as well, so this tour … every weekend we’re in a different state or city, and then we come back to Sydney and we get into the studio on Monday afternoon pretty much, and then stay in there working until Thursday I guess, when we head out again.

Do they put you up in nice hotels... or are they a bit stingy?

Yeah, it’s a bit like that …

What would you say is your ultimate party scenario?

Would these be violent karate kicks, or more like grappling? [Laughs] I would say “grappling” … I don’t know – there’s definitely some sort of forceful movement involved in sexual kung fu dance moves … And then, what else is going on? The Potbelleez are all there, and we’re having an absolute hoot. My wife’s there as well – she’s definitely there on the scene – and we’re all shaking it down ‘til the early hours, upon which we all head down to the beach and go skinny-dipping. It sounds like a high school end-of-year sort of party, but no, The Jimi Hendrix Experience is definitely considered to be of the upmost importance there.

So how does your wife cope with you leading the lifestyle of The Potbelleez?

I think that the main thing there – and this comes up in con-

versation quite a lot, as you can imagine – is honesty, you know? That’s the way a relationship works best, obviously, and so, you know, there’s just no crap, and things don’t go down anyway in that respect – it’s more just the late nights, I guess. When she asks me if I’ve had a few drinks, I just say “yes” or “no.” [Laughs] There’s no point pretending that I don’t live the lifestyle. I do really miss the kids, you know?

I’m away pretty much every weekend, and so I don’t get to take the kids to soccer. That’s a disappointing thing, but that’s the hardest part of the job, you know? And if that’s the hardest part of it, I guess, when you’re in your thirties, that’s what you’re supposed to be doing – you’re supposed to be working hard and providing, and I feel humbled to be able to do this sort of work.

So the ever-so-memorable chorus of Don’t Hold Back was your work?

You couldn’t say that, no – it was more all of us. In fact, the verses are mine, but we don’t really divvy it up like that – it’s not about who wrote what, it’s about how we wrote it.

I mean, we wrote it on our kitchen floor, in about half-anhour to be honest. The guys had the backing track all ready, but the chorus came from all of us, definitely, with Don’t Hold Back … It’s an interesting scenario, because each song that we write uses a very different process, although what we’ve found to be the best process is either I write a song on

the guitar and offer it to the guys, and we re-work it and change riffs and structure and things like that, and they produce it, or they give me a backing track and I work with it. So there’s no rule to how you tell the fairy tale.

Both in the gigs that you’ve played, and also just club and party environments that you’ve been in, what was the last example of real hedonistic nightclub excess that you may have witnessed?

Well, we had one girl come and poo in the DJ box one night recently.

What? Poo in the DJ box?

Yeah – actually squat and poo. As revolting as it sounds, I think she was on some cocktail of psychotropic drugs and thought that some drain that was near the DJ booth was a toilet or something … that’s pretty out-there.

Sounds like a challenge! Tassie, see if you can top that when The Potbelleez play Lonnies Niteclub on the 4th of July, and Sirocco’s in Burnie on the 5th.

He’s stunning specimen of wit, talent and good looks, but sorry ladies – everyone’s favourite Tassie ex-pat and satire superhero Justin Heazlewood has been off the market for some time now, having tied the knot with folk music itself. But the relationship alone doesn’t pay the bills – and he’s got lots of those – so the bespectacled minstrel is heading southward with Josh Earl. Give him money. He’ll make you laugh. You’re currently married to folk – how has the relationship been going? How did you meet her?

Folk and I met back in grade nine. I’d been set up with “Rock” by some friends, but it was pretty awkward. I was literally sitting at the movies with an electric guitar thinking, “I don’t know how to make you happy.” As I was walking out, I noticed an acoustic sitting out the front having a thickshake.

She smiled at me and I made an A-minor shape with my fingers and we just knew.

Have there been rough patches? Did you ever cheat on your musical mistress, and have to earn your forgiveness?

Just recently. I’ve put together a backing band to try and emulate the musicality on the new record, and during that period I did have a brief fling with an electric. I was messy, like an octopus trying to open a can of tuna; me thrashing about, going out of tune, turning all the knobs on the amp and guitar in a desperate bid to create something fresh. I can’t sing the praises of my current acoustic partner “Kelly” enough at this point; she’s been extremely understanding, and has taken me back with open chords.

Exactly how does one make love to folk? What’s the best position?

Sitting down, cross-legged. It’s rather tantric.

What was the last thing you did that could be classified as “so postmodern”?

I took a packet of Nutri-Grain along to the movie Iron Man and ate the whole thing.

In your life right now, what are you happy about? And what are you pissed off about? And what do you plan to do about it?

My life is a delicate blend of cold-hearted bitterness, cosmic bewilderment, gentle love and $8000 of debt. This new album has been a real “journey” in the Milo and Otis sense. I feel like the kitten in the scene where it’s floating along on the river and then it goes over the waterfall.

I heard that the Japanese director went through thirty-two cats filming that scene. Apparently they would film the scene with the kitten, and then the camera crew would pack up and move on, meanwhile you’ve got this kitten still floating down a goddamned river on a piece of wood. I guess that’s the metaphor for how I feel about my career. I’m So Post Modern came and went, and everyone’s moved on, and I’m still going down the river meowing. I’ve been to bohemian hell and back for the new album; I’ve changed producers, managers, borrowed a lot of money, learnt why you need to play to a click track, and found out that “mates rates” is Latin for “surrender all power to an angry alcoholic who won’t return your calls.” I’m kidding, it’s worse than that. The upside is the new album has sitars, violins, flutes and trumpet. The bad news is I’m on anti-depressants.

You’re about to tour Tassie – what’s the occasion? What goodies will you be bringing down this time?

The occasion is I really love performing and want to return to the cheerful faces of my hometown punters who have given me so much warmth and support over the years. Also I’m $8000 in debt and really need cash. I plan to bless the audience with tantalising cuts from my forthcoming album, gently introducing them to the subtle developments and growth in my songwriting. Also, I’ll play Megan the Vegan so they don’t get bored. Josh Earl will grab you all by the faces and stroke you lovingly with a strawberry dictionary of hilarious rhyming couplets, before blasting you with a refreshing spray of folk-rock Lucozade.

If you were given a pet monkey, what would you train him to do, and why?

Fill out my Centrelink forms. Also play drums, bass and sitar. A monkey playing sitar would have to be a plus on stage. He would be a multi-instrumentalist companion on tour, someone I could share a ten-ounce of Boags with at the end of the night before unwinding with a game of Daytona on beginner level.

We’re not having a go at you with this next question … One of your articles that we recently ran was about some kind of experience at an indie night club. Could you please clear up just what the hell it was all about?

Oh, that sounds like you’re having a go. C’mon, I broke convention a little. It was me having a go at a piece of “horror/thriller” fiction and satirising the near-mainstream popularity of the “indie look” of waistcoats, skinny jeans and band t-shirts. (A look which was started by my comedic partner Josh Earl). Basically, all these people annoy me because they seem to be in some kind of gang that I’m not a part of and don’t really understand, so I resort to my high school loner superiority coping mechanism of making fun of these people in my head, thus dissolving the power they may potentially have which doesn’t actually exist, and I only made up as a faint form of selfhijacking in the first place.

Log On For Some Digital Affection

Back in the 80s, the phrase “Computer Love” wasn’t a euphemism for the art of one-handed typing, and Melbourne’s Tzu recently punched that less porn-riddled timeframe into the “Destination” panel of their De Lorean and traveled back to the era of big hair and discos. Their goal? To make the world’s first cross-time-period hip-hop album … and they’ve come through with a winner. SAUCE booted up and logged on for some Computer Love with Pip Norman …

How pissed off are you that everyone constantly mispronounces the name of your act? I mean, for goodness sake, it’s “Tzu”, not “T.Z.U.”, isn’t it?

It’s true … I always call it “T.Z.U.” because it’s easier for people to get, and, in a way, I think the acronym … the sort of non-existent acronym is a bit of a blessing, because it makes us sound more important than we are!

It’s funny how it’s just evolved into the social fabric, you know? That the name of the band has evolved into an acronym, but it doesn’t represent anything other than the word that it comes from.

[Laughs] That’s right! It’s actually quite pointless, although we do spend many interviews making up what the acronym actually stands for …

[Laughs] Give me one!

Nah, you don’t want to know!

No, come on! Give me one!

Alright, the highlight of our career is probably “Taste Zat Urine.”

Not so long ago, someone commented to me that the internet should be termed “Wanknet”, because it was not so long ago that the number of internet sites that were not porn-related had only just evened up to the number of sites that were porn-related. I was just wondering – is Computer Love a euphemism for “Wanknet”?

Ah … Well, you know, I guess in one sense of the word it could be. But it’s not directly what we set out for it to mean …

there’s a little bit of it, you know? Falling in love with our own technology … But That works – the Wanknet! [Laughs] Did you guys just run out of ideas when it came to an album title, that you had to call it the same thing as your single?

Yeah, pretty much! [Laughs] No, we came up with that song, and in a way, that song … it sort of represents what we were setting out to do in the album, which was to do a sort of futuristic-themed electro-sounding kind of hip-hop track.

That track’s really interesting in what it is musically and lyrically … and also, it’s such a catchy phrase that it just seemed right to call it that, even though we tried really hard to find something better! [Laughs] But at the end of the day, it just was the best one, so we went with it.

So can you give me one alternative that the album might have been called?

I don’t know if I can – I can’t even remember any that actually got taken seriously … It was always ones that didn’t even make it fun enough at all, for me to even conjure up now.

The track Computer Love is quite a light, bouncy, radiofriendly track, and some have said to me that your new material, or this song especially, is a real new direction for the act. Would you say that that is a fair assessment of the track, and the album in general?

Yeah … Look, I think the rest off the album is a little bit more down n the lines of what people would know us for, and that track parar-

ticularly … it’s definitely got some elements which are new for us – i.e. the strong sort of electro sound. But you know … we’ve always loved pop music, and we’ve always been into writing catchy hooks and stuff, so there’s nothing new there. But I think the rest of the album is a little bit more on the soul hip-hop tip, which people will be more familiar with [coming] from us. In a way, it’s something really different, but I think anyone who’s currently a fan of our music will get into it, because, in a way, it’s almost a returning to our roots, in some ways.

Talking about going back to roots; the roots of PCs, as in personal computers, is in the 80s, and this electro movement around at the moment seems to have come from some sort of retrospection – some sort of looking back at that sort of 80s sound. Is that something you’ve been aware of in this Computer Love song? Did you think about that era? Or was it all pretty much incidental – that it was a process of osmosis, where you’re absorbing things naturally from your surroundings?

The truth of the story is; we are actually in the 80s right now, and we actually are time-travelling at the moment, Tzu, as a group.

What about me? Can I be time-travelling too?

Well, you have obviously just found yourself a Tardis, and now you’re speaking to us, because you’re time-travelling as well. So it’s pretty good to be the first rs humans to ever time-travel, except for Michael J. Fox, and that’s cool. And now we’re time-travelling ,

we’re trying to make an album that’s new, but we’re actually from the 80s. So it actually can’t be helped that some of the influences came through.

We’re going to have to be careful that we don’t break the space-time continuum here, and end up with dinosaurs in our front yards, of course.

Yeah, although that would be a cool way to market an album – just spraypaint “TZU” on the dinosaur, that’d work.

And as it’s ripping down the house, people would go, “Cool!”

“Cool! I can sue them!” Yeah … I don’t think we intended to make anything that sounds 80s, but in wanting to do something electro, the 80s comes out, and then hence the whole theme of the Computer Love and that old-school kind of nerdy, 80s computer thing, and using a vocoder … It just sort of became something that was fun to play with musically, and the idea of it was fun to play with … so it’s just come out in the music a little bit.

Tzu play Launceston’s Batman Fawkner on the 4th of July, and two shows at Hobart’s Republic Bar on the 5th and 6th.

HARDCORE - MELBOURNE // THE OMEN

Thrash Out ... Quickly

It was a Wednesday morning when we told Tom to interview this Melbourne band about to head down to Hobart’s Brisbane Hotel.

Ten minutes later, we found him curled up in the fetal position, shaking uncontrollably … the track 333 still hammering from the headphones around his sweaty neck.

Before going into shock, he stammered four words; “They’re … so … f*cking … fast …”

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing The Omen …

The lyrics to 333 are pretty intense – what inspired it?

And, in general, what are some common songwriting inspirations for you guys?

Joel: Fast. Beer. Thrash. Porn. Shows. Weed. Mates. Loud.

Did I mention fast?

Coops: We keep Brett locked in a basement so when he does get let out he’s usually pretty pissed off and hates everyone. Wolves and MacGyver are also cool.

Brett: 333 was inspired almost directly by a bunch of books I read about the serial killers around California in the 1970s – it was like an epidemic at the time. Americans are so weird.

As for the other songs, there are no real recurring themes – I’ll just get an idea I like and run with it.

Mark: As far as lyrics go, I’m not really sure; that’s Brett’s thing. We just like writing fast and hard music.

What releases do you have out at the moment, and what plans do you have to do more?

Joel: We’re about to record an album when we get back. It’ll be coming out later this year.

Rory: F*cked if I know.

Coops: We are a pretty slack band, but we are getting our shit together and recording a full-length album next month which we’re all looking forward to, so we will have something for people to listen to soon!

How would you describe the punk and hardcore scene in Melbourne at the moment? Are there many new bands on the rise? And are there many venues that accommodate them?

Joel: There are so many bands now, but heaps of big bands here have either broken up, semi-retired or are doing stuff overseas. Hopefully some new bands step up to fill the gap.

There’re a lot of bands here that have the potential if they work at it. The good venues are hard to get and book months in advance. It’s good though, because it forces people to be organised and come up with good shows. There’re a lot of interstate bands playing here too Rory: Huge. Anyone and everyone is in a band – That has both positives and negatives. The scene is maybe a little too flooded, but there is always a band somewhere to watch.

However, venues are becoming more non-existent and it’s becoming harder to get gigs.

Coops: Support The Arthouse as much as you can. They do amazing things for so many bands and have done so for years, and they will be closing down soon and there are no places that even compare to it. There are a lot of new bands coming through all the time; the ones that stick to their styles and don’t give up ‘cos they’re not a “trend” band anymore are the ones that survive.

What do you guys get up to outside of the band? And how much time do you get to spend on music these days?

Joel: I mix bands and do other sound-related stuff these days. I was a hand model once – I worked in a chocolate factory once too. I play guitar pretty much every day. One day I would like to live in a little cottage and grow vegetables.

Rory: I play in two other bands – Yidcore and an untitled hardcore band (featuring members of Yidcore, Bad Day Down and Deal Like Geneva). I also do security.

Coops: Well, Brett’s locked in his basement, Joel enjoys a bit of corn harvesting, Rory is a judge at cat shows, Mark genuinely thinks he is Frodo and is searching for some ring, and I enjoy entering frog racing competitions. We have spent quite a bit of time working on songs for the upcoming album whenever we can play and get together.

If you knew that you were all going to die tomorrow, what would you regret not having accomplished?

Joel: Not playing at the Brisbane.

Rory: Not making out with Brett.

Coops: The only thing I would regret is not having a beard as good as Rory’s. Come on, it’s impressive.

Brett: Marrying Coops.

Mark: Meeting George Lucas.

Even The Successful Stuff-Up

What is the key to success in the dance music world? Better yet, what’s the key to success in general life? If you’d like to know the answer, you could do a lot worse than hearing what Brit trance master John 00 Fleming had to say when he spoke to us before bringing the noise at Syrup – god knows he’s qualified. Because when it comes to music, he’s not shaken, and he’s not stirred … even when SAUCE was a little late to the party …

Sorry I’m ringing a bit late – when was the last time you really stuffed up?

The last time I stuffed up? Playing a set, you mean?

Anything, mate – what was the biggest stuff-up you made recently?

That’s a question and a half! There was one, actually – it’s not that dramatic, but it’s the first time I’ve ever done it in my twenty-year career of taking flights – I got the wrong day of a flight … I don’t know how I did it. Luckily, we’d set the flight so that I was getting there a day early, so luckily I had that time; I just got to the airport, and they said, “Oh, sorry, you’re not on a flight until tomorrow.” But I managed to do it … That’s the only stuff-up that I can think of that I’ve done …

I’m one of those really irritating, annoying people who has everything strategically planned.

You’re obviously in the U.K. – are you at home at the moment?

I have the novelty of being at home, and I’m absolutely loving every single minute of it … apart from the rain.

You don’t seem to stand still or sit still for very long, so just entertain me for a second – where is the next stop on your never-ending journey?

[Laughs] It’s not very exciting … No, it is for me, actually, because it’s in the U.K., and I really miss playing in the U.K. …

The scene’s taken a bit of a battering to be honest, here in the last few years, and it’s just starting to rebuild itself. I’m in Newcastle tomorrow, Friday, but then I’m doing a doubleup; I’m heading down to the Ministry Of Sound afterwards, and then I’m playing in Brighton, on my doorstep, on Saturday, so that’s going to be wicked. I’m looking forward to it.

You’ve had, like you said, twenty years of doing what you do, and you’ve made more milestones and more accomplishments than many people, perhaps, in the whole of their lives … I was wondering – what is it, do you think, that makes a good DJ? I think it’s about time I got a proper job, isn’t it? [Laughs] I should listen to my parents! [Laughs] I don’t know. I mean, that’s the four million dollar question; what is the key to this success? I think a lot of people are getting it wrong nowadays; there isn’t too much new talent being born, because they’re looking at the real big guns and trying to copy their format of what they’re doing. I don’t think that is the key to success. If you’re copying what someone else has done, it’s

already been done, so go do something original. That’s kind of what I do, in my career; whatever the phase is, whatever the fashion is in music or what’s going on, I’m just doing my own little thing, and it seems to make me successful. I think it’s being original. You should have your own sound – that’s definitely the key.

So it does come down to your personal taste, and which tracks you actually choose, and how you mix them together – it’s a completely individual thing, and whether some people connect with that or not is pretty much going to be luck.

I think so. You’ve got to keep within boundaries … you’ve got to keep it accessible, you know? Make sure you’re not too far apart from what the general public are like. It’s kind of like a balance that you’ve got to keep. You get that from the reaction on the dancefloor.

There are some tracks that I think are wonderful, and I play it on a dancefloor and it just doesn’t get the reaction that I think it would, so you go, “OK, I’ll just keep that in my personal section.”

“I think it’s about time I got a proper job, isn’t it?”

Do you kind of have a general rule about music that you play at all? “To you, it has to be music to dance to”? I know that sounds really straightforward, but sometimes it seems like there’s a lot of music in the dance music scene which is actually pretty hard to dance to …

Yeah … I mean, you just don’t know … The thing is, you’re dealing with the general public, and that doesn’t just lie, those rules, within dance music; it can lie with anything – with car sales or anything … Some car manufacturers put a car out and think, “Oh, this is not going to do too well,” and then it starts selling thousands, and you have to up the production line because it’s suddenly taking off – this certain car. It’s the same with music.

Exposing Her Greatest Hits

The first step to accomplishing in anything is making use of what you’ve got. Artists use their creativity. Models use their looks. And Melbourne trance queen Bexta uses both without apologising for it, because even though it’s her skill as a DJ and producer that has made the Mixology series a success, it really can’t hurt that most people would consider her a smoking hottie, can it? Ahead of her set at Syrup, she spoke to SAUCE about baring (almost) all for Ralph, and the future of Mixology …

What’s been keeping you busy, dude?

I’ve just finished mixing the Mixology 11 compilation, which is out in the second week in July, which has kept me a bit busy, organising the tour and that sort of thing. I’m doing it with a U.K. DJ – I don’t know if you’ve heard of her – Sophie Sugar … she’s, like, trance … she’s signed to Armada over there. So she’s a big name over there, but she’s only been over here once, so it’ll be good to have a different name on the comp.

I only just became aware that there’s a DJ over in the U.K. called Nikki Belucci, and yeah – she bloody DJs topless! [Laughs] Yeah, there’s a little bit of that around, and there’s a thing in the U.S., where they were training up models to be DJs. So all the models were doing, like, Playboy and all that sort of thing, and that was their first priority, and then DJing was their second. I had a problem with that, because I just think

I’m not sure when it was – I’m assuming it was recently – but you were in Ralph … which was a typically risqué affair. Did they do the shoot for the image that was with it?

Yeah, yeah – it was just a shoot with their photographer.

… to me, the music always comes first, and all the other stuff is sort of secondary, so it sort of rubbed me a bit the wrong way. But you know, for me, the Ralph thing was just about having fun with it all.

What was that experience like?

It was different, you know? I did FHM in 2001, and then Ralph this year, and it’s just kind of … to me, it’s all a bit of fun, and I guess I’m lucky because I can experiment with doing those sorts of shoots, and it’s never meant to be taken seriously.

I’d never do that sort of thing to advance my career or anything – I don’t need it.

It’s more of a personal thing. I’ve been interested in exploring that side of myself personally, so it’s sort of an extension of that, I guess.

Like you were saying, you don’t need it. You could be the ugliest girl in the world, but if you’re a good DJ, you’d still be at the place you’re at now. It just seems like a really, really smart move to make use of the gifts that god gave you, so to speak; using your femininity, it almost reaches a whole new audience.

Yeah. I don’t think there’s enough controversy in the Australian dance music scene, so that’s a little bit of a contribution from me, I guess! [Laughs]

It’d be a good thing to show the grandkids anyway.

Yeah, I thought it’d be a good thing to do before you have kids – which is a long way down the track – so you can look back and go, “Yeah, I got airbrushed one day!” [Laughs] What does the future look like for the Mixology series?

What plans do you have for the next one at this point?

And how many more do you see yourself doing?

Well, I’m trying to catch up to Nick Skitz! [Laughs] I think he’s up to thirty! No, no, really, I’m not. I don’t know, I just take them one at a time, and when it feels right to do another one, I’ll do another one. 10 was kind of special, because it was a triple-CD, and there were a lot of anthems, and I felt like it was a real end of an era for me, personally, and as a DJ, because my style of music has changed so much from ten years ago. So 11 is kind of the first step in the next chapter, I think, and the music on it is different, and the DJs are different. So I’m just going to take each one as it comes.

KISSCHASY Too B Or Not Too B

The mass of fans who knew of the album’s release back in 2005 will be fully aware that the Texas alt-rock quintet have now re-released it with additional tracks and revamped some of the originals. The band’s infectious first single, I’m So Sick – which recently featured in Die Hard 4.0 – displays the angelic and, at times, raucous voice of Lacey Mosley, and the driving hard rock sound of the rest of the band; it’s clearly a pick for the best song on this release.

Kisschasy have just released Too B Or Not Too B, a compilation of their first two EPs and some b-sides. Clearly still not feeling it was complete, Kisschasy decided to add three previously unreleased tracks, to give the fans a package that every Kisschasy fan would want to own. On top of all of this, there is also a bonus DVD that comes with all of the band’s music videos to date.

The album has been certified platinum through US sales alone, selling over one million albums and counting. Two more rocking singles – Fully Alive and Flyleaf’s most successful effort All Around Me – have given the band a broad fan base. Lyrically the band explores topics of honesty and searching for the truth, providing spiritual and hopeful outcomes – there are some clear undertones of Christianity. Guitarist Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers fame lends a helping hand on There For You – a song about, unsurprisingly, being supportive and understanding. Though twenty-four-year-old Mosley’s vocal approach can get repetitive and plain (as can the band’s mainstream, somewhat clichéd sound), think of it as another young band that expresses their feelings in an emotional and emphatic way, which will hopefully, over time, lead the band into more of a diverse sound. Flyleaf, however, has really only three tracks worthy of multiple spins – all-in-all, this album has a one month expiry date.

Fortunately for the fans, it contains both of the band’s longout-of-print EPs, Darkside/Stay Awake and Cara Sposa, as well as a fair collection of hard-to-find tracks. For anyone arriving late to the Kisschasy bandwagon, a lot is to be learned about where the band came from and how they have changed over the years. Over their six or so years of existence, not a lot has really changed in terms of their style.

As I’ve said, in addition to the songs from the EPs, there is a stack of b-sides and previously unreleased material. Round it out by a bonus DVD featuring all their video clips to date, and you have yourself a tidy little package, whether you’re a new fan or old. While it’s not the greatest thing I’ve ever seen – or rather, heard – it might be worth your while should you happen to enjoy the Kisschasy brand of rock.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!

Nick Cave; singer, songwriter, screenwriter, musician, poet – does this guy ever stop? The hardest working man in Australian show business is back again with The Bad Seeds to deliver yet another excellent batch of Aussie rock poetry. I say “rock poetry” because Nick’s work is social (and sometimes antisocial) blues-inspired commentary backed by good oldfashioned rock ‘n’ roll. Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! oozes the vibe of a band having tons of fun being together in the recording studio.

From the first and title track, Nick Cave’s patented, twisted sense of humour accents a distinctive 70s blues/rock feel, which is repeated throughout the album, combining straightforward drums and guitars accented by the classic Doors-like organ in the background. The Bad Seeds’ party feel continues in the jolly Today’s Lesson that will have everybody believing the chorus line “we’re going to have a real good time tonight.” The fun times groove on down in Moonland to a moody, smoke-filled bar in Night Of The Lotus Eaters, slowly re-building the vibes in Albert Goes West. The epic stop-start We Call Upon The Author follows, and is a real highlight on what is a classic album, delivering acidic lyrics with a gleeful distain for the world at large.

It’s folk-y, funky and rocky.

1978-2008 features wellknown and previously unreleased Matt Finish songs from the seventies, eighties and nineties with contemporary arrangements, featuring inspiring vocals from David Adams, guitar and bass scat solos by Parrish Mulhoberac and Harry Brus, and a drum solo by John Prior. Although the song content was written by the Matt Finish Band (Matt Moffat from ‘78 onwards) and are, obviously, tracks from 1978-2008, all tracks are performed by the current line-up.

I found Matt’s lyrics were a little hard to understand – they’re very cryptic. I guess we all interpret his words, and the feelings and emotions embedded in those words, in our own way. Dave Adams has added a tangible life and reverence to the old Matt Finish songs.

The lyrics being what they have been, and always will be, are the same. This is Matt Finish. As much as we would all like to live in the past, I would advise you to step into now – this time, this music, this CD, this band.

This music has a place today – it is timeless. It can be classed as contemporary, and this line-up was clearly the one to do it. If you are ever going to grab a “best of” artist compilation, grab a copy of 1978-2008.

THE BRAVERY The Sun And The Moon

It’s been eleven years since Portishead’s selftitled second full-length album was released.

Eleven years in the life span of a band is a gigantic amount of time to lie dormant – and this album is a gigantic departure from the trip-hopping Portishead of 1994–1998. It’s like they have started again and debuted for a second time.

But don’t worry; they are as distinguished and as potent as always, but are almost sonically unrecognisable to the band of old; the one common factor being Gibbons’ vocals, which deliver bleak, emotionally strained lyrics throughout.

The Bravery released their 2005 debut virtually in the wake of dancerock, grafting beats onto guitar riffs. The propulsive energy is still there, channeled into stadiumsize anthems and heartrending ballads – too sappy for the cool kids, sure, but still a fine pop record.

Perhaps bound to the genre before, “trip-hop” is one term I wouldn’t associate with Third – in fact Portishead have seemed to strip every element of trip-hop away, and, for lack of a better term, reinvented or re-shaped their sound into a seamless 21st century sonic landscape. It’s like a channeling of Sonic Youth’s B Sides and Rarities, or an overture of the work of Massive Attack. I’d call it a psychedelic experimental rock album. First track Silence has the vibe of a 70s blacksploitation film or car chase soundtrack, with its frequent fast pace and stop-start rhythm. The Rip is has slow build into a sweeping electronic track where Gibbons’ vocals border on haunting – a trait also evident on Machine Gun and Threads.

Portishead have definitely bought out an entirely original album, which breaks them from the shackles of an old image and gives them the freedom to pursue new ways of pushing their musical boundaries.

With everything that The Bravery have been through to make this album, I would say that they’ve hit the jackpot with this collection of sharply-assembled rock ‘n’ roll, with lead singer Sam Endicott’s earnest, limber vocals suiting the staccato guitar of the disillusionment anthem Believe, as well as the loopy synths of the 60s-tinged Fist Full of Sand. Disco pop surfaces on the biting Every Word From Your Mouth Is a Knife in My Ear, but The Bravery get truly bold on the lush, regretful Time Won’t Let Me Go. Step back a bit, and The Bravery are a bouncy, bass-driven band. But zoom in on this overproduced second album, dripping with newly emboldened lyrical pretensions, and you’ll find some cracks. Thankfully, though, with The Sun And The Moon, the band strips down for a more guitar-based sound not held to any one or two specific influences.

Poor Jimmy … as one half of Sydney hip-hop duo Spit Syndicate, the lead-up to the release of their debut LP Towards The Light meant that he couldn’t even have a shower without promotional duties intruding. Still, he made the best of it, resulting in what might be the first ever comparison between a human scrotum and the music of Dannii Minogue. Wishing it was the first time he’d talked to a naked man; Dave Williams …

Would you like to dry your balls first, mate?

[Laughs] It might make a difference, yes …

So the hip-hop world is like high school, but with ten years added …

Exactly, and more bullies …

They might get cold and shrivel up, and your voice might change or something …

Exactly! No, that’s alright man – how are you?

I’m good. I’m dry.

You’re dry? Okay, well, I’m partly dry now, so we can go.

And are you still hanging out, smoking cigarettes in the toilets? Or were you a good boy?

Nah, I’m an athlete, thank you very much! [Laughs]

The album, Towards the Light … that’s a bit of a huge title, isn’t it? That’s like saying that [Spit Syndicate] is like the Second Coming, isn’t it?

“Apocalyptic,” if you will.

Now that’s a really good rock star moment there … hopping out of the shower and being dried by your female friend …

Well, that better make the SAUCE, I’ll tell you that!

… It’s definitely not lacking confidence.

People sort of think that it comes from … like, there’s a reoccurring theme, because we had a mixtape a couple of years ago called The Future’s Bright, and now the debut’s called

I reckon Mr. Drapht, your Obese Records stable mate – if you were horses – would be a bit jealous of you with the name Jimmy. It’s almost like he was writing about you.

Well, he did take a fancy to me on the recent Block Party tour, so it’s only natural for a young man like Drapht … But yeah, it does seem that Jimmy is a popular name amongst posses, so yeah …

Towards the Light! [Laughs] I don’t know why that stuck.

One of the first tracks ever that we had for the album was The Original … that was probably one of the first instrumentals that we got, and one of the first lines was “Towards the light”, and I think it just stuck from there. But I think it’s suited now … now I look at the album as a whole, I was a little skeptical at first; I could have probably juggled a few other things around, but yeah, it’s stuck, and I’m glad – it should be good.

We’re back to balls again!

[Laughs] Balls again! That’s the reoccurring theme!

Look, this is my “tough journalistic question” coming up; I thought I’d just warn you there, just to [let you get] two feet on the ground and all that … why should someone buy Towards the Light instead of Dannii Minogue’s latest “Dannii Disco” album?

Well … I’m not sure … [Pitches the question to his lady friend … she replies “Because it’s got balls!”]

Always! Always! We don’t want no chafing!

[Laughs] Well, put it this way; Dannii Minogue’s album would be considered a set of wet, hairy balls! Towards the Light would be considered a set of balls that have been wiped down and perfumed! That is why the Australian public should buy Towards the Light.

Did Jimmy, the name, give you, so far, a life of adventure and popularity, compared with Paul?

[Laughs] “Compared with Paul” … I think if I was called Paul things may have been a little more bland … I don’t know if your name really has much to do with your day-to-day … I don’t know if it really matters that much, but when it comes to things like choruses of songs, I think “Jimmy Recard” sounds a little more fresh than “Paul Recard.” I think “Paul Recard” would have been a bit of a flop, so I think Drapht was hitting that on the head with that one.

So, “Just Enuf” – how did that come about?

I never had enough money to do anything, or I had just enough to get there. But really, that sort of was spawned years ago, and I guess it’s one of those things that just stuck.

I guess it was like Spit Syndicate … that was just the best group name that we could come up with. It was there, and it stuck, and we can’t really go back now … not that we want to, but these things sort of follow you along until they’re too far gone to change.

The artist who brought country music into Australia’s mainstream spotlight, Kasey Chambers mustn’t have felt that that was challenging enough, because she recently took another leap; having a crack at musical collaboration with her husband Shane Nicholson.

Ahead of her Tassie shows in July, she rattled her bones for SAUCE …

You’re kind of in the middle of a tour … you’re playing a lot of shows …

Sort of, yeah. We’re doing the tour a different sort of way this year, where we’re kind of just going out in little scattered blocks. I’ve got a six-yearold at school, so I don’t sort of want to be away for too much at a time. So we’re kind of going away for like four, five days, and then we come back for a couple of weeks, and then go off again … It’s working out pretty well – we’re having a bit of fun.

So how has the new material been received at the live gigs?

It’s been really good, actually, yeah. We’re doing this acoustic tour at the moment; it’s just me and my husband Shane and my dad, the three of us onstage, just playing acoustic versions of all of the songs, really. I play a heap of old stuff from the Captain album and Barricades and that sort of thing, and then we get to a point in the show where we’ve been doing the new songs off the new record. I’ve actually just been asking people; whatever songs they want to hear, they’re the ones we’ll play.

Obviously, we can play any of them off the record – it’s a fairly acousticbased album anyway, so most of them work pretty well acoustically. And whatever songs people yell out for, we just do them, which is fun, because we get to do different ones each night, and it kind of keeps it interesting – keeps us on our toes! [Laughs] It’s been really good fun actually, and you kind of get to know … it’s actually a really good way to get to know what songs people are really warming to, because you get a lot of the same sort of songs most nights, but every night you get one or two curveballs.

Rattlin’ Bones … that was pretty much the first thing you’ve collaborated on with your hubby …

Yeah, writing-wise. I mean, we’ve sung together a lot over the years, but yeah, writing, that was the first time that we’d come up with [material] together.

What was the songwriting process like? I imagine it would be different doing something creative with someone who you’re obviously so close to, as compared to just another muso …

Well, yeah. I mean, I haven’t actually co-written with many people at all, let alone with my husband, so that side of it was a bit of an eye-opener for me anyway. Shane’s actually done a lot of it over the years; he’s co-written with a lot of different artists. But yeah, it was a big eye-opener for me. I think I’ve learned more about songwriting in the last year than I have in my whole life, actually! [Laughs] Just working with someone different, and you just feed off someone else, and bounce ideas off them, rather than having to do everything yourself! [Laughs] I think it makes for coming up with better songs, you know? You sort of challenge yourself a bit more … If you have to say lines out loud to someone else, you’re going to make sure that they’re better lines! [Laughs] I think it’s a really good thing, and Shane’s always been a writer that I’ve looked up to a lot over the years.

I was on my best behavior! [Laughs] Even though he’s my husband! It was a real matter of getting to know each other’s styles, really … I was going to say “tricky part,” but it actually wasn’t that tricky, because we’re obviously used to being close, you know, in the marriage sense; you’ve got to learn to give and take a little bit. So, you know, we kind of had to do that with our writing as well. To be honest, I’m surprised at how well we get along. I thought, “Oh my god – the creative process is going to end in divorce for sure!” [Laughs] Kasey Chambers plays Wrest Point in Hobart on the 3rd of July, and Launceston’s Country Club on the 4th and 5th.

WHAT’S IN MY WARDROBE WITH MARK EDMUNDS OF FOREIGN FILMS

It came as a surprise when Caitlin – vocalist of Hobart power-poppers The Frets – told SAUCE that the band can knock out a song in about five minutes; from the musical caliber of tracks featured on their Myspace, one would assume they’d been in the works a lot longer. So is it fair to expect big things from this young band? Yes, yes it is … even if they aren’t expecting too much themselves …

What’s a brief history of The Frets? How did you guys first start?

Well Anna and Caitlin have been friends since high school, always doing little acoustic ditties in school assemblies and such. Amy, being Caitlin’s twin sister, always had something to do with it. She decided to take up bass in the holidays before college, and that was that. Then Chris came along in our first year of college, reeking of drummer goodness … we dug him, he dug us, the rest is history.

Inside The Lines is a pretty smooth number. What’s the song about? What inspired it?

That song has always been just a fun tune to play – it’s got a mixture of all our styles and we all enjoy it. Lyricwise, it’s basically a dig at people who act daft, and read way too much into things – just us venting.

The production on the track is excellent – where did you guys record it? Who did you work on it with?

We started the recordings just in our college studio with help from our awesome teacher Simone, but then a guy named George Goerss must have heard something in our music, and so he chucked some free studio time our way to finish off the demos we had going. We’re mega-lucky to have such groovy people around who have a bit of faith in us.

What plans do you guys have to head into the studio? How far away is a full-length album, would you say?

We’ve started pre-production on an album – once again we’ll be working with George in at Red Planet. We’re hoping everything will be done and dusted by the end of the year. We’ll keep you all posted on our Myspace!

How would you describe the songwriting process

Tell us about the album that has had the biggest impact on you, both personally, and as a musician.

Lily Allen’s debut album Alright, Still. Her lyrics are amazing; she has some really smart, sarcastic songs. I like the originality of her songs and the fact that when she writes about classic topics, like a love song, it isn’t the same soppy stuff you hear a lot of. of The Frets? What usually comes first? What’s left until last? And what song was the easiest to write?

Most of our songs are equally easy to write – if we’re in the right state of mind, our songs can come together in five minutes. Anna our guitarist usually comes up with a little ditty and some rough lyrics, then Amy adds a bit of groove. Chris is usually last in line – unfortunately we don’t see as much of him as we’d like; he’s one busy chap!

The process is different every time; sometimes the bass comes first, sometimes the guitar. We all have our little subtleties that we add to the sound. With us it’s pretty much “if you’ve got something cool, we’ll jam on it.”

What are the main goals of the band for the next few months? What do you most want to accomplish?

I think we pretty much just want to nab any gig we can, mainly because it’s the funnest thing to do … ever. But as for the bigger picture, I think we’re not expecting much – I guess we’ll just take it as it comes, and try to enjoy ourselves. We just want people to like our music as much as our parents do!

Making Noise To Change The World

As the title of his latest twenty-two-track opus will tell you, Edwin Morris wants to make the world a better place … because it sure isn’t one at the moment. He’s an artist very aware of the fact that it’s our duty as human beings to help ourselves where it is needed, by any means necessary. His means? Music, and he spoke to SAUCE before staging a tribute to the music that changed the world … phes. Even so – as with much of the music from the 1960s – my music aims at a positive result, having honestly looked at the negative aspects of our lives.

What are some numbers you’ll be playing on the night, and why did you pick them?

Material that I intend to sing on the night has been chosen to best represent each artist, lyrically, for their best work, and to also pass the baton of the sentiments onto whoever will listen in this generation.

I understand you’ve recently released an album.

What can you tell me about this? How long were you working on it? What’s it called?

The album is called Let’s Make the World a Better Place.

The album took about a year to record as there are twenty-two songs on it (all original material).

How would you describe yourself as a musician, and also as a person?

I am an average musician with a more-than-average hope for the world if it learns to humble itself very soon, and seek the stable, traditional values.

In what ways do you think your music represents your personality?

Lyrics reflect how I feel on many subjects, and I think these lyrics are starting to make sense to even some of the younger generation. Feedback indicates that this is the case. We had an awakening of conscience in the 1960s – I think this is what many feel we need now.

You’re going to be playing what’s being called “a night of nostalgia” in early July, which focuses on the works of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and The Beatles among others. What brought this about? Why these artists?

Artist of this time were often trying to convey thoughtprovoking messages. The music was, as with my music today, one which is focused on both trying to understand where we are at as a civilization and what responsible direction one can, and perhaps should take to avoid an imminent catastrophe. I am talking about moral, social, environmental and economic catastro-

In what ways will you be making these songs yours?

What kind of personal flourishes will you be giving them?

I will be singing a number of my own compositions, and I hope these will be an inspiration to those who recognise the errors of judgment, both from a governmental and social sense that we have endured over the past thirty-odd years. When one is candid and honest with oneself, the rational mind must ask serious questions about the policies and propaganda that has led to the destruction of the stable, traditional family. My hope is that both the young and old generation can construct and propel a conscience-driven movement that we can all be part of. We the people need to recognise that we get the governments we deserve. As Edmond Burk once said, “Evil only multiplies when good men do nothing,” so in answer to an obvious question – what will the night be like? – I hope everyone will enjoy singing along to the choruses of the songs and having a good time, but also at the same time enjoying some of the messages presented in some of the lyrics.

What are your priorities for the rest of this year – in music, and in general life?

Music is, to me, a beautiful form of communication, and if I get the opportunity to do this, both for the sake of entertainment and to express myself in words, then that is as much as I can ask. I am very grateful to be able to perform and, to me, each day is a gift that perhaps I don’t even deserve. In the next twelve months, I hope to write some books and perhaps record some other songs, but now is the only time we’ve got. I intend to present an enjoyable night for everyone who attends Brookfield Vineyard on Thursday the 3rd of July. The future is full of hopes and plans, only time will tell whether not only I, but all those with gentle hearts, actually did what was necessary in that time.

I felt very inspired after hearing it. All of my songs that I’d first written were really serious – I realised that you can write songs that are funny and are about absolutely anything. Before then, I’d never really just let myself go.

I got into other music which was quite similar to Lily Allen’s; artists that have all different types of songs from funny to serious to telling a story – artists like Kate Nash, Soko and Regina Spector and Kate Miller-Heidke.

My mum has a lot of old records and is always telling me to “listen to this” and “listen to that.” I’ve really come to appreciate lots of different genres from all different eras. Mum will sing Puccini in the kitchen, but I’m still not into that. I come from a choir background and am part of a family that doesn’t sing – well, they do, but shouldn’t – so I’ve found my own musical influences along the way and by myself.

Tell us about the gig that has had the biggest impact on you, both personally, as a musician - one you saw as a punter, and one you played yourself.

My mum wanted me to go see another genre of music so she took me to go see David Campbell. I didn’t think I’d really enjoy his style that much, but was amazed at how he interpreted songs. He was old-school, but his performance and energy made me understand new ways of connecting songs with the audience. I was really excited and on a musical high when I got home, and grabbed my guitar and discovered some old classics and changed them completely.

Musically I’ve been doing: the harmonica.

Last clothes bought: a sweet cow hair belt.

My style in one sentence: tight snakeskin pants.

I usually buy my clothes from: op-shops.

A piece of clothing with a story behind it: well, there are too many to mention, but ... I guess I could just go with the Falls one. My cousin and I bought some rather small girls boardshorts at the start of summer and decided to wear them to Falls. Then we ran into some girls that were wearing bright pink, even smaller shorts, so we traded, and yes, if you were at Falls, chances are you probably saw my shorts!

Most embarrassing item of clothing: you mean tiny pink girls shorts aren’t embarrassing?

Where you can see me next: come along to Irish Murphy’s [Launceston] on the 2nd next month and see my band Foreign Films put on an epic show!

One time I was sitting down in Salamanca busking and this guy came past and put a note under my case as I was singing a song. I thought, awesome, I got maybe a ten dollar note or something! I finished the song and looked under the case, and saw a green note. This random guy had just given me $100 for sitting on the ground and singing. That really made my day! My brother wasn’t happy, because he earns $6.50 an hour at Hungry Jacks, and that meant he had to work fifteen hours to get the same amount of money.

Fiddling With Conventions

For a place that has produced its fair share of eclectic musical treats in recent times, it probably won’t surprise you that Melbourne’s also got its own Scottish Fiddle Club … and it’s about to hit Tassie with a vengeance, bringing a massive ensemble to play a whopping nine gigs in just eight days. We had a word with award-winning fiddle prodigy Jack Wilson …

When did you first discover the fiddle? How were you exposed to it?

I was interested in fiddle music even before I was playing any instruments. As a kid, I had always been to folk festivals with my parents and my brothers, and we had CDs around the house, so the exposure was always there. I started playing the viola when I was nine, and picked up violin two years later just so I could play fiddle music, and I’ve just taught myself and found my own way in the first few years.

What do you see as the main strengths of this instrument? Would you say it’s particularly versatile?

I don’t think there’re many instruments more versatile than the fiddle; there is so much room for expression and experimentation in terms of the way you play it.

What makes the Scottish approach to the instrument unique?

The fiddle has been used in traditional Scottish music for hundreds of years, and has developed its own distinct flavor. Sometimes it’s hard for people who aren’t really into Celtic music to be able to hear the difference between Scottish and Irish fiddle music, but the difference is marked. The difference between classical violin playing and fiddle playing is even bigger. In fiddle music, a lot more is left to the discretion of the player, such as how fast to play, what key to play in and the ornamentation you want to use.

It seems a little unusual for such a young person to have such a passion for this type of music. To what extent would you agree with this, and why? And what is it about this music that captivates you?

I suppose it is a little unusual, but things like cars and footy and other “normal” things don’t really interest me.

On the other hand, you’d be surprised how many young people there are out there who love this music just as much as I do. I’ve made friends in just about every state and in many other countries through fiddle music. I often wonder why I love the music so much, and why it means

so much to me. It just does. I’ll let you know one day when I find the answer!

You recently won the Chris Wendt Award for Young Player Of The Year at the National Folk Festival in Canberra. What kind of opportunities have presented themselves as a result of this win? What doors have been opened?

Winning that award at the National Folk Festival was pretty special for me. I’ve been going along for a couple of years now, and to be honoured like that in front of all the people I’ve grown up playing music with and admiring was something I won’t forget quickly. I’m sure doors have opened as a result, but I’m yet to find some of them. I think the main thing to come out of it is recognition and getting your music and your name out there; I think people take you a little bit more seriously. It’s good street cred too.

I understand that you’re working on your fourth album, Gates Of Gold – what stage is that at now?

When will it be released?

Yes, that’s right. We’re rehearsing furiously for the CD, which we are going to record in August. It’s going to be bigger and better than ever, with pipers and dancers and singers and a raft of special guests as well as all the fiddle players in the club. I suppose we’ll release the CD some time before Christmas.

What can you tell me about the shows you’re doing in Tasmania?

We like to think of our whirlwind tour of Tasmania as our second overseas trip, having toured New Zealand in 2005. We’re doing nine gigs in eight days all around Tasmania, so it will be busy, but we’re looking forward to it, and hopefully we’ll draw some crowds. Scottish music is a lot funkier than you’d think.

SCREEN IT 2008 TO EXPLORE THE AUSTRALIAN IDENTITY Screen It is Australia’s national filmmaking competition for school-aged students. Designed to encourage imagination and inventiveness in Australia’s primary and secondary school-aged students, Screen It fosters a new generation of young filmmakers.

This year, entrants will be asked to create works responding to the theme of “Australian Identity.” What does it mean to be Australian today? How may this change in the future?

What has it meant in the past?

Open to all school-aged students nationwide, entrants are invited to enter a work into one of three categories – live action film, computer game or animation. The benefits of being involved are endless, according to ACMI’s Screen Education Manager, Brett McLennan. “Not only do entrants develop key screen literacy skills – essential for today’s technology savvy society – they learn productions techniques, demonstrate incredible creativity and resourcefulness, foster teamwork and most importantly have a lot of fun throughout the process and walk away with work they can really be very proud of.”

Wide Angle Tasmania will be screening a night of Tassieproduced animation at Hobart’s Alley Cat Bar on Wednesday the 25th of June. This is a free event, and things kick off at 7:30pm. Dancing Around Birth Control

Depicting parenthood through dance; it sounds like a daunting task, and it probably was, but then Tasdance have never been ones to shy away from high-concept projects, and by the sounds of it, Parenthesis is going to be another feather in their cap. SAUCE caught up with Kate Denborough to talk about this mother of a show …

Being a mother yourself, how much of Parenthesis has come from personal experience? And what are some examples of this?

In my view, being a parent requires a sense of humour. I wanted the show to be fun to perform, to be honest and emotional. As none of the performers are parents, I tried to create an atmosphere of trust and frivolity in the rehearsal room to allow the cast to imagine their roles and the characters they play as parents within the piece.

How long have you both been working on this project?

And what were you doing beforehand?

I had a two-week creative development in January 2008 followed by another two-week creative development in June.

I am Artistic Director of KAGE (based in Melbourne) and we recently undertook a tour of our work Headlock to Adelaide and Sydney. Most recently, I directed Frank Woodley’s solo show Possessed, which is currently playing in Sydney before heading to Edinburgh.

What made Parenthesis a unique challenge, compared to what you’ve done previously?

Making a work about subject matter so close to home is always challenging, but I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the dancers at Tasdance, so it has been a great experience. I love working with new people.

What can you tell me about the dancers you worked with here? Why did you choose them in particular?

What do you think they brought to their roles?

Tasdance is an ensemble and it’s always great working with a company who know each other, as they are already relaxed and confident. They are a wonderfully talented and versatile group, and have been able to take on both the physical and dramatic challenges that my work contains.

What can you tell me about the way you’re expressing the theme of motherhood through dance? How are you doing this?

In Pink Lines I am investigating the urge to become a mother, rather than just being a mother. The primal urge to mate and the desire to find a partner are all part of parenthood. I wanted to make a work that was accessible for the performers (who aren’t parents), but who know the desires and frustrations of relationships. Annie Grieg (Artistic Director of Tasdance) chose the theme for the season.

Ultimately, what do you hope audiences will take away from this production?

I hope that audiences (both men and women, those who are parents and those who are not) will be able to relate to the work and feel a connection with the emotions portrayed. I hope it makes people’s toes tingle, and sheds light on one of the million beautiful and provocative stories about parenthood ...

Strangers In Between (Review) THEATRE ROYAL – 13/6/08 Strangers in Between was written on commission for the Griffin Theatre Company by Tommy Murphy, and won the national NSW Premier’s Literary Award for Best Play in 2006. It was first staged at the Griffin Theatre Company in 2005 where it broke box office records and it has had several successful seasons since.

Strangers in Between revolves around the trials of the teenage, sexually confused Shane (Sam Dunn), who runs away from his family home in Goulburn to Kings Cross in Sydney to escape a judgmental and abusive family. In his new home he makes two new friends; Will (Anthony Gee), a very Sydney gay boy who offers friendship, fraternal and physical love and a little something extra into the bargain … and Peter (Anthony Phelan), an older gay man with a senile dying mother and a fatherly affection for Shane. Shane is troubled in more ways than one when his brother Ben (Anthony Gee) arrives from Goulburn in an attempt to convince Shane to come home – not only is his sexuality preying on his mind, but he is filled with uncertainty about the value of washing powder over liquid, and whether one should keep honey in the fridge. Although similarities are evident between Ben and Shane in their preconceived concepts of homosexuality, Shane comes to rely on the support and love of his new friends in accepting his new identity, whilst trying not to sever himself completely from the past.

Sam Dunn creates an intensely irritating yet endearing character of Shane and manages to play down to the age of his character remarkably. When written down it would be easy to assume that the character of Shane was mentally disturbed, even schizophrenic, from the stac-

Old Nick Company Inc 60 Years And Still Going Strong

Uni Revues had been performed “on and off” in Tasmania in the decades prior to the 1940s, but that all changed forever in 1948. A group of enthusiastic students and colleagues created and performed a revue called Smokin’ Hot” by The Old Nick Company. An actual theatre company was immediately formed, and since then, every May in Tasmania, an Old Nick Company Uni Revue has been performed, not to mention hundreds of serious, funny, fabulous and (occasionally) dire theatre productions presented under Old Nick’s banner.

Revenue from the annual Uni Revue allows the company to produce and stage several other productions each year, and the Old Nick Company gives up-and-coming actors, directors, playwrights and anyone keen an opportunity to showcase their talents. But what is it about The Old Nick Theatre Company that has seen it persevere for sixty years?

“Generally, the enthusiasm of its members and the public,” said Craig Wellington, company president. “Literally anyone can become involved, and that means people with very different enthusiasms … wanting to have crack at appearing on stage in a Uni Revue, wanting to learn some backstage skills, wanting to write some material, direct a play, write a play or to have that stepping stone of experience and knowledge, if the individual is looking to a professional career.”

So how has Craig seen Tasmanian theatre evolve in recent years?

“An evolutionary leap occurred when the last short-lived state theatre company died. There has definitely been, for the last ten to fifteen years, an endeavor to create professionalism in the “amateur” environment. Despite the fact companies like Old Nick present non-professional theatre (actors do not get paid and the rights to perform the shows that we buy are non-professional), standards are different to earlier decades. This has been a conscious decision within some companies, including Old Nick,” Craig told SAUCE. “Even within those companies, decisions are made as to which productions are ‘experimental/developmental/community’ and which are ‘semi-professional/ seminal/pull-out-all-the-stops’ productions. This has been incredibly important in Tasmania. Tasmania sees a wealth of professional touring shows from interstate thanks to the Theatre Royal, Theatre North and Tasmania Performs, and we now have a new adult theatre company, and long may it excel and grow …

cato nature of his thoughts and the things he says, but Dunn somehow manages to turn what could be mental instability into little more that a short attention span. He interacts pensively with the rest of the cast and it is often difficult to decide whether this is purposeful or merely born out discomfort with his fellow players, but hell, it works out either way. The most interesting aspect of casting is that Shane’s brother and his lover are played by the one actor, and they are in many ways similar characters.

This may have been an illusion applied by their physical similarities (i.e. being the same person) but there is confidence in the dialogue of both Will and Ben, and the character of Shane treats them both with respect; his brother with the respect of fear, and Will with the respect of experience.

It is a sad thing to say that more could be gleaned of both of Anthony Gee’s characters by how others interacted with them rather than how they themselves came across.

As Will, Gee seemed slightly barren and lacked passion for the boy he was supposed to be sleeping with, and as Ben he had too little compassion for Shane, even as the abusive older brother. It is difficult to write about the character of Peter, for while Anthony Phelan did an admirable job I saw nothing but the face of an old friend, which left me in fits of hysterical giggles.

Even still, Strangers in Between could have been acted out by fourteen-year-old crack addicts and I still would have been impressed. It is a beautifully written piece of theatre and was staged in a delectably childlike manner that turned one room into a million places.

SKATING A LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM A CONCERED SKATER Hello (Editor), I would like to start with saying that I think you have a great magazine which keeps me up-to-date with what is going on throughout Tasmania within the music industry.

The reason I am contacting you is that I was deeply concerned by an article I read in your latest issue. As I always do when reading SAUCE, I flick straight to the back to read the skate report; however, after reading Jimmy’s article, I proceeded to read the small article below which was written by Christian Macdonald.

Now I don’t know who Christian is, and I can understand where he is coming from, but his opinion of what is happening at his local skate park (Beaconsfield) is definitely not the case in other parts of Tasmania.

Skateboarders have it hard enough as it is. Myself, I am twenty-eight, I own my own home and I am an upstanding citizen. I skateboard at the busiest park in Tasmania (Elizabeth College skatepark) and I have skateboarded all my life. People look down on me because I am a skateboarder, and the funny thing is, I probably earn more money than them.

Yes, sometimes at the park there are kids doing the wrong thing, but this certainly is not the case with most of the skateboarders who are there to just skateboard.

People like Christian obviously have a problem at their local park; my question to you, David, is should he be allowed to express his opinion through a widely-read magazine? I am sure people all over Tasmania have opinions on what is going on in the world, but is your magazine a place for them to express these opinions?

I was very taken back that you would print something like this; Christian is not an influential person within the skateboard company, and seems, to me, just to be a kid expressing his opinion.

As you would be aware, you can find problems in any part of society – for instance, the music industry! But would you be willing to print “you can’t be a cool musician if you don’t take drugs”? This would give your industry a bad name, whether it’s true or not!

People like musicians, skateboarders, artists or anybody not in the mainstream is frowned upon by the general public – articles like this certainly do not help.

I have spent my whole life defending what I do and who I am (a skateboarder) and do not need uneducated kids writing misinformed articles about things they obviously know nothing about.

The article started off saying skateboarding saved my life etc. etc. – well, skateboarding did save my life! Sure, I have been down the path of taking drugs and drinking, but was it because of skateboarding? No, skateboarding has never encouraged me to take drugs, and neither have the people involved in it!

It doesn’t matter what you do in life, there will always be people trying to do the wrong thing and influencing young kids. Is Christian going to write an article next time he decides to go for a surf and there are people smoking pot in the sand dunes? Will he then say how you can’t be a cool surfer if you don’t smoke pot, therefore giving surfers a bad name?

Did you read this article before it was printed, (Editor)?

As I said, I can understand where Christian is coming from, but I hardly think that SAUCE is the place for a kid to express his opinion.

I trust you understand my concern, and I will be interested to hear your response.

JAMES EAVES So who are you, and what do you do for a living?

I’m James Eaves, nineteen years old, live at Clifton Beach, and I work as an apprentice builder.

How long have you been surfing? What got you started?

I have been surfing for about ten years at least; I suppose I started ‘cos my mates and Dad started, and growing up and hanging out at the beach, it just happened.

What’s your regular surfing haunt? And what do you like best about it?

It’s hard to have one regular spot when you live in South Arm – all the local spots are so average! But that’s the good thing about living in Tassie, being able to travel from coast to coast chasing the waves. But I love surfing south-east cape because it’s such a secluded and awesome spot, and I love surfing up the east coast because the waves are so fun up there, and the water is warmer.

When was the last time things went completely tits-up on the water? Any injuries or freaky moments?

Luckily I haven’t had any bad injuries yet, but last year when I was surfing at dark at a reef on Philip Island with two mates, while we were waiting out back for a set – a bit like shark bait – a massive seal jumped out in between us. That was pretty freaky – scared me, but didn’t seem to bother my mate …

What do you love most about surfing?

Everything … getting to hang out with my mates, going on missions to find waves, the people you meet and places you go, all while keeping healthy.

What kind of board do you use, and why? What can you tell us about it?

The board I ride most is a DHD 6” X 18 1/8” X 2 1/8”; I love this board ‘cos it seems to go sick in most conditions. I also have a bigger board for when the conditions are bigger.

Who are some of your surfing idols, and why?

Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning ‘cos they are freaks, and all the Tassie lads because they are fun to surf with, and are always pushing me.

What competing have you done? And is that an aim for the future?

I have been competing in all the Tassie comps for years, and have also competed in a few Australian junior titles and other competitions around Victoria. This year was my first Tasmanian title. That was something I have been aiming for since I was a junior, and hopefully there are a few more to come. I would also like to do a few more comps out of Tassie.
