Visit Baton Rouge Proposed as Interim Manager of River Center

By Jonathan Trager

Visit Baton Rouge could take over as interim manager of the Raising Cane’s River Center as city-parish officials pursue a long-term plan to renovate and expand the downtown convention complex. Mayor-President Sid Edwards has asked the Metropolitan Council to approve an agreement allowing the tourism agency to provide interim oversight while the city-parish searches for a development partner for the River Center’s planned redevelopment.

The proposal, announced on August 17, is intended to maintain operations and convention business during the transition. “The River Center is one of the most important economic engines in Baton Rouge, and we want to maximize its positive contributions to our region,” Edwards said. “The professionals at Visit Baton Rouge work every day to promote and attract significant events and tourism, and this management relationship enhances their efforts.” Under the proposal, Visit Baton

The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA), which owns McCormick Place, appointed Konecki to the position following a national search. He began his new role at the nation’s largest convention center on August 24. Konecki spent 16 years earlier in his career with McCormick Place, including serving as an event manager. He later joined the Chicago Automobile Trade Association, where he spent more than 20 years and most recently served as executive vice president and director of auto show operations. That experience gives Konecki a perspective from both sides of the convention business as he takes over daily operations at the 2.6 millionsquare-foot convention center. “McCormick Place is one of the most iconic venues in the meetings and events industry, and it is an honor to once again join this extraordinary team,” Konecki said. “This campus

Are you seeking names and dates, a grand tour of the accomplishments of past generations, a scholarly explanation of the past? The end of a story. Or do you desire continuation? Even if you’re fascinated with a place’s past, do you still give yourself over to the present? Indianapolis Motor

Speedway (IMS) and Butler University’s Hinkle Fieldhouse are both National Historic Landmarks, the former opening in 1909 and latter in 1928. Luckily, neither act their age. These venerated shrines of sport are as vibrant as the day they opened, and from my recent experiences, even more so. Hinkle and IMS are not sites where history comes alive, they’re historical places that make you feel alive. Please turn to page 6
