Proposal to Hike Philadelphia Hotel Taxes Placed on Hold

A revised proposal to boost Philadelphia’s hotel tax stalled in city council last week in the face of strong industry opposition as lawmakers worked to finalize the city’s budget.

The proposal, which emerged from negotiations between city and hotel industry representatives in May, would’ve hiked the city’s hotel tax by 0.6 percentage points, less than the Mayor Cherelle Parker’s original plan for a 2 percentage-point increase. The

HOTS Speedy Spud… A Singapore teen known for his lightning fast ability to solve a Rubik’s cube—also known as speedcubing—has used his skills to earn a unqiue Guinness World Record. Calen Seah earned the record for the quickest time to assemble a Mr. Potato Head doll, UPI reports, with an impressive assemblage time of 4.63 seconds. Seah has long been popular for his speedcubing videos on YouTube, but the record attempt involving the Mr. Potato Head toy was part of a longer dream, UPI reports.

“I watched Guinness World Records videos as a child, even before I began speedcubing on YouTube and I always imagined what it would be like to actually be able to get a world record for myself,” Seah told the Guinness World Records. Seah attempted the stunt in January this year, and he was confirmed this June. He beat the previous record of 4.75 seconds set by Lim Kai Yin, of Malaysia, in July 2024. With transferrable skills and a strategic mindset, HOTS thinks this kid is going somewhere.

MGM Receives Acquisition Proposal from Magazine Publisher

People Incorporated, owner of America’s largest publisher, People, Inc., announced its interest in acquiring MGM Resorts International on June 1.

People Incorporated published several lifestyle brands, including PEOPLE, Food & Wine, Travel + Leisure, InStyle, Better Homes & Gardens, and Southern Living. The company also already owns a minority stake of 26% of MGM Resorts’ stock.

The proposal is valued at $18 billion and would see People Incorporated pay $48.30 per shares for the remaining MGM stock it doesn’t yet own.

Post-closing, People Incorporated said it would expect to own “just over a majority” of MGM’s equity, with minority ownership held by other investors, leaving People Incorporated with control over the business.

said it had received the proposal, but it did not comment on whether or not it would accept. However, the company’s board of directors is reviewing the proposal with financial and legal advisors to determine whether the acquisition would be in the best interests of MGM Resorts.

“The Company cannot provide assurances that such proposal or any subsequent proposal will result in an agreement or a transaction being reached or, if so, as to the timing, price or other terms and conditions of any such agreement,” MGM said. “The Company remains focused on advancing its position as the world’s premier gaming entertainment company.”

The proposal is valued at $18 billion and would see People Incorporated pay $48.30 per shares for the remaining MGM stock it doesn’t yet own.

Barry Diller, Chairman and Sr. Executive of People Incorporated, said the company has been looking into an acquisition of MGM for the last six years.

“We began investing in MGM nearly six years ago because we believed it represented a rare kind of business: one with real world assets that AI cannot easily replicate or disintermediate and exceptional digital growth opportunities. That conviction has only strengthened over time,” said Diller. “We continue to believe the market materially undervalues the power and durability of MGM’s assets. We believe MGM’s management team is superb, and that there is a compelling opportunity to support MGM’s next phase of growth and help unlock its full value.”

In a statement released after People Incorporated’s announcement, MGM

Diller is a member of MGM Resorts’ board of directors. He noted in a letter to the board that People Incorporated expected MGM and the rest of its board to take time to consider the proposal, adding he would recuse himself from “any deliberations” of the casino giant’s board.

The proposal does not mean that

People Incorporated has any intention of pursuing a merger or of selling their existing stake in MGM, Diller said.

In a June 1 statement, Las Vegas-based Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165, said the unions have had good relationships with MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas. With MGM Resorts being the largest employer in Sin City—with more than 25,000 culinary union members across the state of Nevada—that they expect those dynamics to continue under any potential new ownership.

“Casino resorts are dynamic workplaces and ownership can change, that’s why strong Culinary Union contracts are necessary and in place to protect hospitality workers and their union benefits and job security,” said Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Workers Union. “While this proposal is still in the early stages, Culinary Union contracts provide strong protections for workers through any potential ownership change. We’ve had a long-standing positive relationship with MGM Resorts and if this transaction moves forward, we expect that relationship to continue.”

Caesars Entertainment to Be Acquired for $17.6B

Caesars Palace and Caesars Entertainment may have a new owner by summer’s end.

In a May 28 announcement, the entertainment behemoth notified shareholders that it had entered into an agreement to be acquired by Fertitta Entertainment for approximately $17.6 billion. The acquisition is still pending shareholder and regulatory approvals.

In the all-cash transaction, Fertitta will pay about $5.7 billion for the Caesar’s Palace casino and resort and take on approximately $11.9 billion in outstanding debt. The deal would make the sale a record high for a casino.

Fertitta Entertainment is owned by Texas billionaire Tilman Fertitta, also the U.S. ambassador to Italy and San Marino. The company has been in talks with Caesars about an acquisition since late February.

Hospitality company Fertitta Entertainment owns the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casinos, the NBA’s Houston rockets, and more than 600 properties in 15 countries under its restaurant and hospitality subsidiary.

As part of the acquisition agreement, Caesars Entertainment shareholders will receive $31 in cash for each outstanding share of the company. According to Caesars, the price “represents a 49% premium over Caesars’ unaffected share price as of

February 25, 2026 (the last trading day before rumors of a potential transaction).”

The company’s board has approved the agreement and recommends that shareholders follow suit. However, at press time, at least two law firms— New York-based Kahn Swick & Foti and Pennsylvania-based Brodsky & Smith—had initiated an investigation into the deal and put out an open call to shareholders concerned about whether the deal undervalues Caesars Entertainment.

“The investigation concerns whether the Caesars Board breached its fiduciary duties to shareholders by failing to conduct a fair process, including whether the proposed transaction is paying fair value to shareholders of the Company,” Brodsky & Smith said in their investigation announcement.

On June 1, the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165, both of Las Vegas, released a statement regarding the potential acquisition, noting that both Fritatta Entertainment and Caesars Entertainment companies have strong relationships with the union.

“Culinary Union has had strong relationships with both Caesars and Tilman Fertitta and we do not see that changing,” said Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Workers Union. “We anticipate there will be discussions ahead about the

Fire Kills at Least 21 in New Delhi Hotel

A fire in a hotel in New Delhi, India, killed at least 21 people and injured dozens more on June 5. Of the 21 dead, at least 12 individuals are foreign nationals, according to local authorities.

The Delhi fire department responded to a call at the Flourish Stay B&B in New Delhi’s Malviya Nagar neighborhood around 8:48 a.m. According to the department, 26 people were rescued and survivors were sent to nearby hospitals.

A doctor treating the victims of the fire who spoke at a local news conference said eight people had been put on ventilators, the New York Times reported.

According to Indian national news outlet NDTV, the fire broke out in the five-story building’s basement due to what authorities believed to be a short circuit.

Under India’s bed and breakfast scheme, the Flourish property was

licensed for six rooms; however, the bed and breakfast allegedly operated with 22 guest rooms, including some in the basement. Additionally, the hotel had “only one entry-exit point, permanently sealed windows and a sensor-operated main door,” NDTV reported, that contributed to the devastation.

Local news outlet News18 reported that many of the deceased nationals were from Central Asia and Africa.

According to NDTV, India’s bed and breakfast guidelines as introduced in 2007 require a property to meet the following criteria: it must have no more than six double-bed guest rooms, the owner must reside on the premises, the building must be strictly residential, and the building must comply with fire safety, ventilation and basic infrastructure norms.

Reports indicate that the hotel had two kitchens, including one in the basement, and a restaurant on the ground floor, and local police are in-

A “go-shop” period will be in effect through July 11, Caesars said, “during which time Caesars and its financial and legal advisors may solicit, consider and negotiate alternative acquisition proposals from third parties.”

“I’m honored to join PCMA and lead Convene into its next chapter,” said Weiss. “The publication has long been a trusted voice in our industry, and one I have deeply admired. I’m grateful for the strong foundation Michelle has created, and I look forward to partnering with this talented team to continue delivering thoughtful, high-quality journalism that serves and strengthens the global business events industry. I am deeply grateful to Sherrif, Junior, and Michelle for entrusting me with this opportunity.”

Weiss served as national marketing manager for the meetings and events team with Caesars Entertainment. She led integrated communications strategies across more than 20 industry publications and was nominated for the Caesars Founders Award in 2026. PCMA said Russell is departing to have more flexibility to spend time with her family. She will continue to contribute to the events industry.

The city council put the legislation on hold indefinitely after weeks of lobbying by hotel owners, tourism officials, and business organizations who argued that even the scaled-back tax increase would make Philadelphia less competitive as it prepares to host a series of high-profile events. These include matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and celebrations tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Hospitality groups had initially reacted sharply to Parker’s proposal to raise the city hotel tax from 8.5% to 10.5%, which would have increased the combined city and state hotel tax rate to 17.5%. Industry leaders warned the increase would rank among the highest lodging tax rates in major cities and could discourage convention planners, tourists, and business travelers from choosing Philadelphia.

Following negotiations, the administration agreed to reduce the proposed hotel tax increase to 0.6 percentage points while shifting more of the burden to short-term rental operators. City officials said the revised plan would raise roughly $15 million annually to support initiatives aimed

Supporters of the proposal argued that a dedicated funding stream is needed to expand homelessness services, including shelter capacity, behavioral health programs, and housing assistance. With city council leadership shelving the bill and the budget process nearing completion, the proposal appears unlikely to advance in the immediate future.

Salt Palace Convention Center to Close for Renovation

Utah’s Salt Palace Convention Center will close for three years beginning in the fall of 2027 as part of a sweeping redevelopment project, Salt Lake County leaders announced in early June.

The announcement of the full closure comes as plans move forward for a major redesign of the downtown convention center and the creation of a new sports and entertainment district surrounding the area. Officials expect the renovated Salt Palace to reopen in 2031.

The decision marks a shift from earlier discussions that envisioned portions of the convention center remaining open during construction. County officials said a complete clo-

sure will allow work to proceed more efficiently and reduce the overall construction timeline.

“What we want to do is set up downtown and the sports entertainment culture and convention district for long-term success,” Arlyn Bradshaw, Salt Lake County Associate Deputy Mayor and Executive Director of Visitor and Convention Services, told local news outlet KSL. “What this is going to allow us to do is ensure that the Salt Palace remains a top-tier convention destination in the country and ensures that our partners in the business community are well supported into the future.”

Key changes to the Salt Palace Convention Center that will be made to the facility include adding a sec-

ond full-service ballroom, improving connections between floors, upgrading accessibility and amenities, and creating more versatile event spaces.

County officials acknowledged the temporary economic impact the closure is expected to have on hotels, restaurants, and other businesses that rely on convention visitors. However, they contend the long-term benefits of a redesigned facility outweigh the short-term disruption.

Bradshaw said officials selected the 2027 closure date after reviewing event bookings and consulting with contractors about the most efficient construction schedule.

“We chose a date that we felt was most advantageous based off of the booking calendar and the feedback

U.S. Travel Launches ‘Meetings Meet the Moment’ Campaign

U.S. Travel Association has kicked off a new campaign called Meetings Meet the Moment, designed to shape business leaders’ perceptions of in-person meetings.

Key findings include 50% of business executives are planning more meetings this year than in the past two, and 73% of millennial executives plan to hold more meetings.

Kevin Hinton, Managing Director of Group Travel, U.S. Travel, said even with the findings meetings are still vulnerable because, “the value of meeting

“Jeremy Gutsche and Kathy Varol bring a unique perspective on innovation, adaptability and future-focused leadership that will inspire attendees and challenge our industry to think differently about the opportunities ahead,” he said.

“Destination organizations are navigating unprecedented change, from evolving traveler expectations and emerging technologies to growing community expectations around tourism’s impact and value,” said Welsh.

In addition to the keynote presentations, the convention will introduce a new format called “Learner Journeys,” which will allow participants to customize their conference experience based on professional interests and goals.

The five content tracks include Solutions, which focuses on practical approaches to destination challenges; Strategies, centered on growth and long-range planning; Skills, aimed at professional development; Scope, which provides global industry context; and Leadership & Culture, focused on organizational health and community impact.

This campaign comes as a follow up to U.S. Travel’s recent release “U.S. Group Travel Report: Strength Beneath the Surface,” which the association said highlights the resiliency and evolving group travel sector that is poised for growth this year.

Other sessions will focus on innovative destination funding strategies and collaboration among regional stakeholders to drive economic and community benefits.

Conversation With Walt Leger III, President & CEO, New Orleans & Company

New Orleans & Company started the summer by hosting the launch of Sail 250 and North America’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards Ceremony. Leger connected with USAE to discuss the bureau/city’s brand, hospitality developments and sharing its more than 300 years of history.

USAE: What does “Built to Host” mean to you?

Leger: For more than 300 years, New Orleans has been a place where people come together to exchange ideas, build relationships and create something new. “Built to Host” reflects not only our world-class convention facilities, hotels and walkable downtown, but also the spirit of hospitality that defines our city. Hosting is part of our DNA. It is how we welcome visitors, support meeting planners, engage attendees and showcase our culture. At New Orleans & Company, “Built to Host” is more than a marketing slogan—it is a commitment to delivering exceptional experiences and meaningful outcomes for our customers every day.

Ultimately, being Built to Host means helping organizations achieve their goals—whether that’s educating members, building stronger communities, generating economic impact or creating unforgettable experiences for attendees.

USAE: How is the city’s hospitality

portfolio developing?

Leger: New Orleans continues to make significant investments in its meetings and hospitality infrastructure. The planned Omni Convention Center Headquarters Hotel, expected to break ground in the near future, will be a transformative addition to our convention district. New lodging options are also expanding, including the recently opened Element by Marriott and the upcoming Fairmont Hotels & Resorts property.

In addition, more than $1 billion has been invested in hotel renovations across the city. The Hilton New Orleans Riverside is completing a comprehensive renovation of its 1,622 guestrooms along with major resiliency improvements. The New Orleans Marriott is finalizing a renovation of all 1,333 guestrooms, while the New Orleans Marriott Warehouse Arts District recently completed a renovation of its 332 rooms. The JW Marriott New Orleans has also renovated all of its meeting and event spaces, enhancing more than 24,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space. These investments demonstrate our commitment to maintaining a worldclass hospitality product for meetings and conventions of every size. New properties in the boutique hotel space are also adding to the offerings across the city, bringing exceptional food and beverage offerings as well as a flexible

accommodations for smaller groups and meetings.

USAE: How does New Orleans & Company incorporate the city’s history into its mission?

Leger: New Orleans exists because of the Mississippi River. For centuries, it connected the heart of North America to the world, making our city a center of commerce, culture and innovation. That history continues to shape who we are today.

At New Orleans & Company, our mission is not simply to promote tourism but to steward and share the authentic story of New Orleans. We celebrate the people, traditions, music, cuisine and cultures that have made this city one of the most distinctive destinations in the world. We were honored to serve as the first U.S. host city for Sail 250, helping launch the nation’s commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. It was a fitting reminder that New Orleans has long been a place where history, culture and global connections converge.

USAE: Please share a handful of ways that the bureau is engaged with the community outside of traditional business practices.

Leger: We believe the best visitor experiences begin with strong communities. The things that make New Orleans a great place to live and work also make it a more compelling place to visit.

One of our most important initiatives is the Greater New Orleans Region Vision Plan 2035, a comprehensive 10-year roadmap developed through collaboration with more than 250 community stakeholders. The plan focuses on strengthening transportation and connectivity, supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses, expanding access to quality public spaces, growing the cultural economy and enhancing regional quality of life.

In addition, New Orleans & Company supports workforce development initiatives, cultural organizations, neighborhood-based events, sustainability efforts and advocacy for

investments that benefit residents and visitors alike. Our goal is to ensure tourism serves as a catalyst for broader economic and community prosperity.

USAE: Where is the first place you are taking a visitor?

Leger: I would probably take them to one of our incredible urban parks— Audubon Park and City Park—both of which capture so much of what makes our city special.

Nestled in our beautiful uptown/ university neighborhood, Audubon Park is an urban oasis that first opened in 1898. People travel from near and far to marvel at and enjoy the majestic oak trees, lagoons, and expansive green space located within the park, as well as the Audubon Zoo. For the millions who use the park for picnics, relaxing, walking, running, cycling and special events there is no better place in New Orleans for recreational fun and relaxation.

Audubon Zoo regularly earns top national honors, most notably taking 8th place in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Zoo. It was also awarded the prestigious Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Innovation Award for Advocacy Impact.

At more than 1,300 acres, City Park is one of the largest urban parks in America and home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, the Louisiana Children’s Museum, botanical gardens, golf courses, sports facilities and numerous venues for meetings and special events. It is also home to the largest collection of mature live oak trees in the world, with some dating back hundreds of years.

Most importantly, City Park reflects the balance that defines New Orleans: world-class cultural attractions, natural beauty, recreation and community gathering spaces all woven together in a way that feels uniquely authentic. It is often the place where visitors realize New Orleans is much more than they expected.

Elevating Your Vision: Why Your Next Event Belongs in the Richmond Region

“A win is when a planner feels like their vision wasn’t just executed: It was elevated. That’s when we know we delivered something meaningful, not just memorable.” —Jason Whitt, National Destination Sales Manager, Visit Richmond, VA

When I’m not reviewing RFPs, building strategic proposals or walking a site with a client, you can usually find me jumping out of airplanes. Skydiving requires absolute precision, flawless preparation and, above all, trust. Honestly, planning a high-stakes, citywide event isn’t much different.

I’m Jason Whitt, National Destination Sales Manager for Visit Richmond, VA and I know planners take a leap of faith every time they choose a destination for their meetings. My job — and my passion — is making sure that when you take that leap with the Richmond Region, you have a partner who guarantees a smooth, spectacular landing.

Here is why the Richmond Region is transforming the meeting experience, and how my team and I show up for you every step of the way.

The Foundation: Built for Citywide Success

Before we talk about the incredible culture and energy of this region, let’s talk logistics. When we sit down with meeting planners we know that if the infrastructure isn’t there, nothing else matters. Fortunately, the Richmond Region brings three undeniable advantages to the table:

• Unbeatable East Coast Accessibility: We’re centrally located within a day’s drive of half the U.S. population. If your attendees are flying in, Richmond International Airport offers 160 daily flights with wonderfully efficient, stress-free TSA lines. We’re also served by three Amtrak stations, making short-haul travel a breeze.

• Built for Citywides: Whether you’re bringing 25 executives or 4,500+ attendees, we have the foot-

print to host you seamlessly. Our Greater Richmond Convention Center features 700,000 square feet of space, with more than 2,000 hotel rooms within a 1-mile radius and 22,000 across the region.

• Exceptional Off-theClock Experiences: A great meeting doesn’t end when the sessions do. With over 900 restaurants and more than 90 local attractions, your attendees will be engaged long after the workday is done.

Partners on Purpose: How I Show Up for You

At Visit Richmond, VA our guiding philosophy is that we’re “ Partners on Purpose.” But what does that actually mean?

To me, it means taking a client-first approach built on trust, respect and deep local roots. We view our role in your journey as the direct link between planners and our local hotel partners. We understand how to balance the priorities of both the planner and the property so that everyone walks away with a win. We don’t just want to execute your RFP; we want to elevate it.

From our very first conversation until your final attendee departs, my team and I are by your side. We facilitate your site visits, provide logistics support, supply marketing resources and remain a steady, thoughtful presence onsite to ensure your event runs flawlessly.

Partnership in Action: Solving the Unexpected

A destination’s true colors show when things don’t go according to plan.

Recently, we worked with a large association group where the attendance absolutely skyrocketed after their original booking. Suddenly, we had an immediate, critical need for more

than 1,500 additional room nights. It was the kind of scenario that keeps planners awake at night.

Instead of hitting the panic button, we hit the phones. Leveraging my deep connections across our hotel community, we immediately identified available inventory and secured the accommodations needed to support the expanded footprint. We also coordinated the complex transportation logistics between the multiple new properties and venues. Because of our collaborative hospitality community, we mobilized quickly and turned a high-stress situation into a seamless success story.

3 Game-Changing Developments

There is an undeniable energy in the Richmond Region right now. As someone who loves to entertain, I am thrilled by the heavy investments being made in unique event spaces. Here are three new developments we love showing off on site visits:

1. CarMax Park and the Diamond District: The new home of the Richmond Flying Squirrels officially opened this year. This stadium brings premium hospitality spaces, concerts and flexible event venues that firmly position us as a premier sports and entertainment destination.

2. An Expanding Hotel Landscape: Our hotel inventory is booming with new properties and boutique experiences. Additions like Shenandoah Mansions in the Fan District, alongside expanding hubs near the Henrico Sports & Events Center, give planners brilliant new options for their attendees.

3. Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront: This stunning, newly completed riverfront concert venue is a crown

jewel for the region. Surrounded by mixed-use developments combining dining and entertainment, it offers dynamic new ways to design uniquely Richmond events.

A Look Ahead: My Advice for Planners

Here at Visit Richmond, VA, we prioritize long-term relationships over quick wins, so we’ll always give it to you straight: The Richmond Region is a strong year-round destination, but our spring and fall seasons book up incredibly fast due to our outdoor beauty and mild weather. If you want those dates, we should start talking well in advance.

However, I highly recommend looking at our shoulder seasons. Planners are finding incredible opportunities to take advantage of strong availability and exceptional value during these times without sacrificing an ounce of the attendee experience. As demand for our region continues to rise — especially for larger citywides — early planning is your best friend.

The Richmond Region Difference When I’m not working, I love hiking and paddleboarding on the James River, which runs right through the heart of downtown. That river embodies what sets the Richmond Region apart: It’s a perfect balance of vibrant urban energy and relaxed, natural accessibility. Attendees immediately connect with our welcoming vibe and innovative culinary scene.

But at its core, the difference here is the people. When you book with Visit Richmond, VA, you get a team that is genuinely invested in your success. Let’s connect, let’s collaborate and let’s elevate your next event. We are your Partners on Purpose.

As the sun sets, The Richmond region comes alive with illuminated landmarks, vibrant neighborhoods, and a dynamic urban core. For meeting attendees, the city offers an engaging experience that extends well beyond the convention center. Photo courtesy of Visit Richmond, VA.
