The Oldest African American Church In 1773 George Leila a slave, was the first African American Baptist to be licensed by the Baptist to preach in Georgia. Leila played a part in the founding of the Savannah Church by converting some of his first members. Initially he was licensed to preach to the slaves on plantations and along the Savannah River, In Georgia and South Carolina. Leila’s master freed him before the Revolutionary War. After the Revolutionary War started in 1778 Leila connected with the British that occupied Savannah to secure his safety behind British lines. The British offered safety to slaves that escaped from their masters. After the British occupied Savannah, the Patriot master of David George and his followers fled to another area. All the members of the Silver Bluff church went to the city to go behind British lines for freedom. They joined with some of Leila’s group. Others were converted by Leila’s preaching, including Andrew Bryan and his wife Hannah in 1782. Bryan became a preacher and leader in the congregation. In 1782 hundreds of blacks were evacuated from Savannah by the British, who transported many to Nova Scotia and other colonies, and some to London. Leila and his family sailed with the British for freedom to Jamaica. David George and his family went with Loyalists to Nova Scotia. Both founded Baptist congregations in their new locations. Later George and his family migrated to Sierra Leone where he planted another Baptist church.

Bryan led the First African Baptist Church to official recognition with 67 members on January 20, 1788, at their regular meeting place of Brampton's barn, approximately three miles west of Savannah. They were recognized by Rev. Abraham Marshall (a European-American minister) and his free black assistant Jesse Peter (who took the name Jesse Galphin). Galphin was also one of the founders of Bryan, who had purchased his and his wife's the Silver Bluff Baptist Church. Marshall examined freedom, was the only one of the three early black and baptized members that day. Baptist preachers in the colonies to stay in Savannah and the new United States. He continued The efforts of Haiti to secure its independence to preach and organize other slaves in the from colonial rule beginning in 1791 are Savannah area despite persecution from local remarkable for the fact that what began as a slave Episcopal authorities. the resources of the French Empire and to form a government of Western Hemisphere Africans. Haiti, much smaller in population than the United States, was attacked by armies as large In 1794 the congregation built a frame structure on land Bryan had purchased the year before. They called the church Bryan Street African Baptist Church. Bryan lived to see the church grow to over 400 members. His brother Sampson, who assisted him, remained a slave. In 1800 the congregation had grown to 700. By 1802, Bryan Street renamed itself First African Baptist Church, and two other black congregations were founded: Second African Baptist Church and the Ogeechee (Third) Baptist Church. In 1815, Andrew C. Marshall, Bryan's nephew, became pastor of First African Baptist. In 1822, the First Colored Baptist Church and the Second Colored Baptist Church recombined and became the First African Baptist Church. The church organized the first Sunday school for African Americans (endorsed by the Independent Presbyterian Church) on July 26, 1826. By 1830 under Marshall, the congregation of First African Baptist Church had grown to 2,417 members. In 1832, the congregation had a serious split over doctrinal issues that took years to resolve. Some members felt that Marshall was too taken by the new ideas of Rev Alexander. Marshall and more than 2,600 members left to found a congregation that kept the name of First African Baptist. They purchased a building at Franklin Square that had belonged to the First Baptist Church. In the 1850s, they constructed a sanctuary facility on Franklin Square, which has been continuously occupied by First African Baptist. The congregation at Bryan Street, numbering fewer than 200, kept the facility built under Andrew Bryan and took the name Third Baptist Church. Later they renamed it First Bryan Baptist Church. As the Georgia Baptist association grew, there was competition among congregations to claim lines to founding core members and be declared the first church in the state. In 1888 at the Georgia Convention, claims were examined as to primacy of First African Baptist of Savannah and the First Bryan Baptist Church. The convention declared that First African Baptist of Savannah was the banner church, due largely to Marshall's leadership during the difficult years of the 1830s, which held his congregation together under the name of the original church.

The Radio Corner There has never been a time in history where the Independent artist could call his own shots. It’s no longer up to the record companies to hold the trump c a r d . Technology has changed the future for the independent artist. On any given day, an artist can go into his/her own studio and put a track together, creatively and in one’s own time. Artist can keep 100% of their earnings if they stop waiting for a label to discover or validate them. This is your dream, it is your job and it should be treated as such. With the proper training an artist can succeed.

once the money is recouped, keep in mind you are a commodity and it is a standard 90% to your 10%. Now this can still be a whole lot of money in the bank, but when you look at 10% of 100% which one would you prefer? Once mainstream artist learned the business, they started becoming independent left and right. Does that sound funny or what?

Another thing about the record labels they don’t work like the days of Motown, they want to see how many records you can sell before they talk to you, now give that some thought! Artist if you truly want to learn the game, we live in an information society, there are honest consultants that can help you and there are some shady people out there also. The key word is do your research, whoever you are considering to consult for you, start by checking their credentials before you pay any money out your pocket. Artists please take the time to think about your career whether it is a label or choosing the right strategies for your career. In closing I would like to stress that I don’t have any An artist should not be in the industry if he does problems with record labels it may be good move not understand business. It is called the music for you, just find out what’s entailed. business because it is a business, point blank. In this industry it is based on 90% business and 10% Be sure to check out our website at talent. Have you ever wondered why record media.slaminfatbeatzradio.com and don’t companies take 90% of artist earnings? The artist’s forget to check the show time schedules. looks at the glamour, fame, and wardrobe the jewelry and let’s not forget the groupies. I am not trying to drag a gray cloud around, however; think about this, a record company may spend 80,000 to 800, 000 on an artist, now this money has to produce something. The record company is not spending it because you look or sound good it used for airplay, tours, fashion, the modeling agencies, studio time, and the list goes on. You may receive some nice gifts as incentives, but now you have to make this money back and

Father's Pride You little one are father's pride, the joy you bring I cannot hide. Ten little fingers and ten little toes, your beautiful eyes and button nose. How could I. even dream what having you would really mean. I do wish I would've known, that you are really a gift on loan. Tho', I could not have prepared, for the gift of love, that God has shared. I will always do my best, God believes, I'll pass this test and I will know I have succeeded when you're a parent, and there when needed. ~Christine Michaels
